I will have to admit this wouldn't be the Safeway store I would go to on a regular basis, but since I was working just next door from this Safeway store in Kailua, I decided to stop by since it was on a Friday, and as we know it..........it's Friday DEALAGES Day! Although the store looks a bit dated, the store appears to be very organized. I love the self check out stations, because it helps with not having to wait too long in line should you just want to pick up a few items. The day I came here, I stopped by the hot foods deli department & picked up a pound of boneless wings. The safe here at this Safeway was friendly & helpful. Parking here is easy, so getting to the store is easy. There are other businesses surrounded by this Safeway, so after shopping here, it can be a potential one stop shopping experience. read more

Safeway has been a staple on Oahu, long before the nearby grocery chain. Corporate chains...any biases aside...are a comfort to most consumers offering uniformity, consistency, and convenience. The Kailua Town location is off Hamakua Drive. Parking lot has a fair amount of stalls. Demographic is similar if perhaps older than Target's. I just went for a plastic container and came away with a kombucha and a Select ( Safeway's own...slap a label on it...brand ) sparkling water. Self-checkout kiosks make smaller purchases convenient. Store is clean, organized, and well-stocked. Police was busy near the entrance dealing with what appeared to be homeless man. read more

I love this Safeway grocery store and its one i'll return to every time i'm back in Hawaii (like I did last week for some fresh fish). This is the one that I grew up near and would bike to in Elementary School back in the day. Standing service today from Derek in the seafood department, I had several pokies at this Safeway and I must say it was one of the best meals that I've had while on my trip. Derrick, the seafood manager is amazing and so helpful when it comes to picking out the best seafood. I find this Hamakua Safeway has a shorter wait time at the deli department especially when they have their incredibly, affordably priced fried chicken, Jojo potatoes and chicken nuggets for $5 when on sale. The workers are working as fast as they can to complete orders once the cooked items are out of the vat of hot oil. And upon completing orders, they take the time to say "have a nice day!" to customers. Their bagging of hot fried chicken is so synchronized. One is cooking the fried chicken in the vats of hot oil. Another stocking and getting the bags ready for the worker to place the chicken pieces into the bag. Then the bag person zips up the bag and calls out the customers names. The atmosphere is so pleasant. Applause to the workers for wonderful work. read more

I originally wanted a cake w/ my dad's cats face on it but their machine is broken so I decided on the next best thing. A cake that looked like the front lawn. My dad LOVES TO MOW the lawn, so I told the lady who was helping me, Karla. She said she would do make it as real as possible w/ the grass...and she did! Unfortunately they didn't have the toys to put on the top of the cake, but it was ok. I landed up ordering them from Amazon and they go here in time! The cake was amazing...the decoration on the top was PERFECT! The cake itself was moist, the frosting (buttercream, Karla's recommendation) was sooo yummy and it was HUGE! This review is for Safeway Delivery only. Yes, delivery from Kailua to Halawa Heights, reserved time window, on specific days including next day. I'm a fan, I was prior to the pandemic and continue still. The store and drivers have changed to the standard mask/gloves required in order to maintain social distance. Still friendly drivers smiling in spite of the masks. Delivery fee depends to the window of delivery; tomorrow 10:00 to 11:00 AM will be higher than day after tomorrow 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. No need to find parking, shopping's a breeze! I'm a fan of the Jumbo Eggs, Deli meats, fruits & veggies, sourdough bread and the Applewood Smoked Thick cut Bacon! Lol, add alcohol and that is my weekly shopping list ;) The drivers park on the street then walk up my driveway, then up the stairway to deliver. These delivery people are tough. HORRIBLE PHARMACIST Do NOT use the pharmacy at this Safeway. The pharmacist is extremely rude and treats her customers/patients like garbage. The other day my husband and I came in to see about filling prescriptions. I was asking questions. The pharmacist would not even look away from her computer and was mumbling incoherently. I said that I couldn't hear her because of the store noise. She completely ignored me and kept mumbling. I kept telling her that I couldn't hear her. I'm glad I'm not kupuna and hard of hearing. If I didn't have to give a star I would not. This store has by far the worst customer service ever. The cashiers are rude, I think only a couple people are very welcoming. Your workers need to attend customer service training. I'd be happy to train your employees how to give good service. This is a let down, especially when you have a older dynamic of customers, older customers love to feel welcomed. Hire me to do your customer service for Safeway in the states, I don't think your current trainer is doing such a great job, trust it will increase more sales and visit. read more

Ordered DoorDash from Safeway. First thing, I'm not sure if this is Safeway's or the dashers fault but I ordered a specific item and gave them three different replacements to choose from if the item wasn't there. They chose the only replacement I didn't choose because I can't eat it and they didn't even bother to tell me they were replacing it. My other dasher from a while back told me she was replacing something and made sure it was okay. Now this is Safeway's fault. The item I got that I didn't even want to begin with was expired! Luckily I don't eat this so I'm going to try and return it. It was not just a couple days expired but two months! In the image I posted I circled today's date on the receipt and the date of the product. I will update you guys if they do not take my return as I couldn't find anything online about returning things from DoorDash. DoorDash did not even give me my full credit back for the items so I'm trying to at least get full credit from Safeway especially because it's expired. read more

This review isn't toward this particular store (or maybe it is because they fulfilled the order), but a warning to those who plan to use Safeway's Online Order Delivery System.  Because they have the worst product substitution known to man kind ( and they won't let you cancel the order after they've switched out the items you really wanted),  and then you'd actually be lucky to even get the right items delivered. i ordered a USDA New York Beef Steak Bone-in Value Pack for roughly $27. It was substituted with a Top Pork loin value pack. I truly dont understand how a beef steak can be substituted for pork? Its not even the same kind of animal. and guess what....when I got my order delivered....they gave me the wrong bag, and I ended up with a bag of grapes and string beans.... Well,  you can pretty much tell that im miffed about paying a ton for items i didnt want. Theres not way to cancel your order prior to delivery,  trust me,  i tried the website,  i tried the 877-505-4040,  and i tried calling the store. As for the 100% Product Satisfaction Guaranteed and the 100% Delivery Satisfaction,  Id rate as a 0. I went to my nearest Safeway to give them the wrong bag and they told me I needed to drive to Kailua for a refund. InstaCart, Door Dash, Safeway Delivery - I wish you the best because you guys are the hottest of messes. Please for your own sanity,  do not use Safeways Online Order Pick-Up Delivery System. But if you do,  realize youre not going to get the items you ordered and you're not going to get a bargain. read more

I moved back to Kailua recently. So, I've been shopping at the various markets, here: Foodland and Whole Foods. I went to Safeway as it was its turn (Times is next) so that I can check out quality, variety of foods, prices, customer service, etc. During the weekend prior to thanksgiving, it was amazing how many items were not in stock (@ 2:30pm). Yogurts, vegetables, bananas (only overripe or underripe ones were available), etc. They ran out of green onions which is crucial for a recipe. I stopped by the deli and was totally ignored (this seems like standard practice for all delis tho'). When I was attended to (an older Asian woman who kept looking at me but not stopping her efforts of slicing meats albeit no toner customers were around), I ordered the special meal deal. The young man informed me that he didn't have enough of all the cooked items (chicken wings (salt and pepper), chicken tenders and potato wedges). But, if I agreed to assort the wings order, he could prepare my order in 5-minutes. I agreed. Otherwise, it would be 30-minutes. I shopped around. Again, so many items were out of stock. When I arrived, the foods were in the bags. Here are photos of the wings--completely burnt or totally undercooked and rubbery. There were other issues related to the lack of hygiene, too. Safeway will not be my market despite that it's the most convenient within my neighborhood so it is disappointing. I hope they train their staff (preparing them when to prep foods, stocking, hygiene practices) so that I can return, eventually. read more

This review is for Safeway Kailua. I was treated very badly by the store manager, Chol. The employees are great but I have a major problem with him. I went there with my service dog, Awesome & my service dog in training, Epic. Epic's training had to be put on hold due to me having a heart attack. Well, Epic dug a bunch of rubbish from under a shelf & I stopped her. Just then, Chol came by and he saw the pile of rubbish. He started telling me, in a very loud voice, that I had to leave because he couldn't have my dog making a mess in His store. Customers were all looking at me and I felt really embarrassed but I asked if I could pay for my items then leave. He said no, I had to leave now! I then realized that he thought the rubbish was poop from my dog. I immediately called him back by saying in a voice as loud as his, "manager, come back here now!" He turned around to face me and I said, "I bet you think my dog pooped, well get over here and look at this, it's NOT POOP, but it is the rubbish that was under the shelf! My dog actually is helping YOU keep your store clean!" He then turned and started to walk away cause he knew he screwed up! I asked in the same loud voice, "are you STILL kicking us out?" Customers were all gathering around watching by now. He tried walking away but I wouldn't let him go until he said I could stay and finish my shopping. Because if this, I try not to shop there anymore. He made me really embarrassed and upset. I had a few of the employees tell me to report him while others said he's usually really nice. I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt so I didn't pursue it but if this happens again, I will report him. He didn't even apologize to me. I think he should. I've been a customer there for over 30 years and have had Awesome for 11 years and Epic for 2. Hopefully, I will be able to start training her soon. This Safeway has the best employees, except for the store manager. read more

My review for here is totally based on the floral department alone... I've seen nicer Safeways and friendlier staff.... But I've never seen a floral department like this one out of all the Safeways that i have visited. Granted, I've never been to every single one, but you knew what i mean. I absolutely looove the selection of flowers and arrangements they have. it's always changing, so i don't have to go with the same stuff all the time. And i do visit here an average of 2to3 times a week. So i spend at least $45- $50 a week on beautiful flowers here so that my Grandparents grave can always have fresh flowers... Lots of new faces and semi-friendly employees. But overall, the customer service wise- they will definitely fix it to make the customer satisfied, if you know who to ask. I would say to either contact customer service thru the Safeway app or go to the customer service rep on duty. Most times they'll empathize with you. Sophia is one of the best employees ever. Kind hearted, genuinely trying to help every customer. She even steps in to help get you the better deal when machine overcharges an item, without asking! Donna in the bakery is also one of the friendliest employees there. Always in a great mood and upbeat! Most of bakery are really friendly. I wish the old manager in bakery didn't have to rotate to the other store. There's more to mention: Michelle in DUG (Drive Up & Go), Kathy in Deli, Michael in produce, Kama in the front end, and ofc more that absolutely are nice to talk to. Anyways, I highly recommend to take a few trips there and you'll find the employees that make your day when you stop by. Maybe not everyone but it's worth giving them your business. Also recommend downloading the Safeway app for all the deals and weekly ad updates. read more

I have been a customer at the Safeways on the windward side of Oahu for 34 years mostly Hamakua Safeway . But in the last year or two service has gone so down . The managers don't even care . For some reason the last two or three months they have not been caring any Safeway Select diet drinks a lot of people depend on them that can't have sugar but they won't find out any reason why . I have gone to all four Safeways on the windward side and can't get any answers . The manager I last spoke to I don't know her name she was middle age and wore about 12 Hawaiian bracelets and she said just consider the Safeway Select diet drinks gone for good. After 34 years I guess I may have to switch to Foodland and take on their name brand stuff. Also there is a bagger at Safeway Hamakua a very large young gentleman about 20 years old he does not know how to pack a bag for nothing . He packed him so heavy me being 71 years old I couldn't even begin to lift one bag . I never offered to help me to my car . I have seen him in here for over a year and I have never seen a person as lazy as this young man is. Someone needs to talk to him. read more

I ordered a cake from Safeway and I did it over the phone so I just verbally said I wanted a white cate with blue and red writing for the words. They asked if I wanted a flag so I said sure. In my mind I thought it would just be a little flag on the cake and it would be all white. When I saw the cake it was way beyond my expectations the cake was better then I ever could have thought. Thank you for not taking the easy route but actually putting some design and thought! I will definitely use this Safeway again for cakes. Between Target and Whole Foods, this store provides some products you can't get in either store. The prices are higher than Target and lower than Whole Foods, but their sale items, could be cheaper. I go here to get those items. This store also competes with two other grocery stores that are within walking distance. Their prices and selection are competitive with those stores. The store is closer to where I live and it has plenty of parking. The staff is friendly and the store is clean. read more

Most of my food shopping is done at this Safeway. Store is clean, and the departments are usually well stocked and faced. Prices are good as long as they're on sale, otherwise Safeway can be pretty expensive compared to the local competitors. Meat quality here is really bad sometimes, though. I commonly see meat packages that should have discount stickers because they're expiring that day. I have had multiple bad experiences with the pork and lamb at this location: they're 2 or 3 days away from expiration, yet when I get them home, they're slimy and smell rancid. Maybe something is wrong with the meat departments cooling? I don't know. I try to avoid the pork and lamb all together now. The beef and chicken has always been fine at least. Workers are mostly nice, some more so than others. Checkout lines can get pretty crazy during dinner rush or holidays. Overall, a good grocery store, just be careful when shopping for meats. read more

This review is for Anuhea in the online delivery department. It looks like some things can be out of stock though while ordering on the site it shows available. This is heartbreaking if you really need that item, whether it's for a dietary restriction for a child or an ingredient you are cooking with. Living in Kailua, Safeway is the place that I can run to for that last minute ingredient at 12:30 am! Being open 24 hours is definitely a plus for me! The parking lot is huge. The stalls are a little smaller than I like, but at least they aren't teeny. The carts are parked outside of the store. There is also a water dispenser (for your large bottles) right outside of the door. As you go in, there are baskets to your right. You can grab your local magazines from the rack right next to it. The Kailua Safeway is set up similar to other Safeways. If facing into the store, the fresh foods and hot counter is on your right. Pharmacy, florist, and bakery to your left. The aisles are clearly marked for you to find what you need. The clerks are very friendly and helpful. You can find one easily if you walk around. The prices are ok. They have a Safeway app that adds discounts to your Safeway card. There are always sales, so you can shop around and get a deal! The cashiers are ok. It's like I either get the grumpy dude or the super friendly local Aunty. There are also self-service checkout registers if the regular lines are too long. Safeway may not be my favorite place to shop, but it is one place that I will shop for my grocery needs! read more

Confession - I parked in the Safeway parking lot and went to have breakfast at Boots & Kimo. However, I had every intention of shopping at Safeway after breakfast because I wanted to grab some snacks and supplies for hanging out on the beach at Sandys and Makapuu. However, I opted against the Poke because they were nice enough to post up a sign that the Poke was frozen then thawed. Also, I had made mental notes on prices of various items at other stores so when I noticed that Safeway's prices were in some cases $.45 higher so I opted to stop off at some local store/superette to give the local mom & pops some business instead. Other than the prices, the location seemed older but stocked with the usual necessities one would come to expect from a grocery store. I didn't have much interaction with the staff so I'm not commenting on the customer service other than to say, I did witness employees helping with groceries out to the cars. read more

Today, a Safeway supervisor named DEVON was terribly unreasonable and inconsiderate with respect to customer loyalty. Two days ago, I bought a $9.49 carton of eggs in my total purchase for $141.26. (I regularly spend about $500 monthly at that Kailua Safeway.) I drove miles home that night and discovered that four eggs were cracked on their bottom and a fifth was cracked with OLD AND DRIED residue GLUING ITS LOWER SHELL the carton. Eggs contaminate easily. Two days later, I was conveniently in the area and had the empty carton with the one glued shell in my car. At Safeway, DEVON was so anal as to question in detail what I did with the other eggs, which were cracked and where inside the carton. Despite that I told him the time and trouble of living miles away and later at home finding the Safeway produce cracked and spoiled, then taking the time to return miles back to Safeway, with a receipt showing my customer spending of over $hundred! Nevertheless, he said I would only be given credit or refund if I come back with the few other eggs. Safeway Director MERVYN LAM is responsible. Terrible inconsideration to a longtime loyal customer. My entire 59 household of LAM family members WILL NEVER GO BACK TO KAILUA-HAMAKUA DRIVE SAFEWAY AGAIN! DEVON and others there are sniveling, anal, inconsiderate jerks.
