I have been shopping here for many years, even before the it was remodeled severely. The Safeway before was very friendly, and the service there was excellent. The products that were available there was great enough, especially for the small area around it. I was always there almost everyday since it was right next to my house. However, the new Safeway is TERRIBLE. I don't like it at all. Unfortunately, I have no choice but to go there since it is very close by. Yes, the store is bigger, has a better selection of products, have communal areas and is opened 24 hours a day which is very convenient. SERVICE, EMPLOYEES, and QUALITY is a severe drop from before. The service there is terrible. The lines are long, and it takes forever to get assistance when I need something. The employees are very rude. On occasion, when I need help looking for a product, they would just shout at me saying "What you see is what I have" although we can clearly see it on their work cart. Even at times when I need to reach an item, they would ignore me and walk away. I have to find myself going to customer service to ask for assistance. Many of the prices are listed wrong. They have products listed at a certain price, but then as soon as it is rung up, they turn it around and say it is my fault and that I should know what the price is. How am I supposed to know how much an actual product costs? That is ridiculous. This store needs a turnaround in service and in employees. read more

Kudos to this Safeway. They have changed their look over the past year and I believe had a grand-re opening of sorts. The cafe, S-bux with the free wifi, and new grocery are all nice additions. They just need to invest some time in training their staff and they will be a viable alternative to the harris teeter around the corner. The price are pretty cheap and the prepared foods section has a wide array of stuff. It never seems to get packed here...and I'm not sure how I feel about that. *This review is only for the Safeway Pharmacy at this location* My 5 siblings and I have been going here for the past 1.5 years for our pharmacy needs and the people who work here are incredibly efficient and friendly. The customer service doesn't get any better than this. Perhaps because my family is so big and we are there so often (kids always get sick!) but they always remember our names, they give great advice and are very knowledgeable about every single ailment my 7 year old sister tends to come up with. I no longer dread going to the pharmacy and having to wait for service. Everything is always ready on time or earlier, they are great at taking care of any insurance billing issues and even informed me of some coupons I could use. A+++ read more

I live less than a mile from this Safeway, and although I don't recommend it, I go probably once a week due to the location. The issue is that about 75% of my visits result in Safeway overcharging me. Today, I had to wait at the customer service line after looking at my reciept. I received over $8 back, and keep in mind I spent just over $50. If I shop early in the morning, and I am overcharged, I'm told no one can refund my money and I need to come back after 9am. Given this is a 24 hour Safeway, this is ridiculous. It's difficult to discern the cost of items during checkout, because it doesn't display the final price, just the original price with sales discounted underneath. At this point, I'd decided to beat them at their own game. I write down EVERY price of an item I put in my cart and then scrutinize the recipt at the end. I save usually $5 to $8 dollars a visit. At the customer service desk, to get the most money out of these mistakes, let the person know that you know of Safeway's return policy, which is that if an item is under $5, you get the first item free of that kind, and the other items at the lower price. read more

I wish I could give four or five stars for this Safeway because I really like shopping there. However, my average review is based on the couple of bad experiences that I've had at this location. Some of the cashiers do not understand how to run an eWIC transaction and I end up leaving my entire order at the register. This happened a few times. I go down the street to another Safeway, pick up the same items that I just left behind, and the cashiers have no problem running the transaction. Additionally, some cashiers and even one of the managers at the Safeway on Anderson Road do not understand how to process certain manufacturer's coupons. This is very frustrating especially when I have babies and a strict budget. Otherwise I love that the store is conveniently located, open 24 hours, and always stocked and clean. read more

This review is of the gas station, not the store, which is fine, good, really. But the gas station is a major rip off. Three times now, I have been stiffed on the gas discount. I go into the store, give them my cash (for additional discount) and pump. The first time I didn't get the 30 cents off, the attendant told me it was because I didn't show him my card. The second time, I did, bringint it to him. Still, no (now) 40 cent discount. Third time (another 30 cents) it happened again and all the attendant can do it say he can't help. There was another customer in the shop at the same time, also protesting (and he had even gone out to the pump to help her). Letters to Safeway HQ and to their Customer Desk were never answered. Stay away from this place. Get cheaper gas at Liberty or another station. You won't get your discount here. read more

I love THIS Safeway. And I love the safeway app that lets me try products for free or half off, and that gives me gas points. AND the gas station is right next door. This store is huge, parking is plentiful, workers are pleasant enough (10 times more pleasant than the McLean Giant Food). Yes, you have to have control over your checkout. As you do in every store. But the Safeway corporation has particularly bad checkout technology. If you use the Just for U app, you'll have more control and save more money. Pharmacy is great. Never more than 2 people in line. I have just switched all my prescriptions from CVS to Anderson Safeway. The Safeway in downtown McLean can't compare with this one. The downtown Safeway parking is an accident waiting to happen, their dairy section smells like something died in there, and the aisles feel small. Yes, you see Kennedys, Cheneys, and the Colin Powells downtown, but if you just want a stress-free shop, use the Safeway out on Anderson. Oh, plus, there's a Lost Dog Cafe next door to the Anderson Safeway whose outside tables are private and quiet due to the empty parking lot and landscaping. As far as the fruits and vegetables department is concerned, it is a 5 stars. The gentleman in charge is very professional and he provides the clients the best quality for much cheaper than the Giant (OK, hard to be more expensive than the Giant). This will be the last time I go to this Safeway. I've always had a little issue with them but today was the worst. I received rude service from the hot food counter; the person helping me not even knowing their own menu. And then at 1230, middle of the day on a Friday, they only had two at the registers and the line was very backed up. But there was also no one at the customer service desk to alert. Right before I was about to be checked out another clerk came to anther register but was pushing past customers to get to his register and was not saying excuse me or anything. A very clean grocery store located right on the Falls Church/Mclean border. The shelves are always staffed and I never have to wait in line to checkout! The staff is courteous and there is plenty of parking since this is pretty much the only store in the shopping center. Use your phone number linked to your Safeway account to purchase gas at the station in front of their store. I normally get 10 or 20cents off per gallon when I do this! Also there is a Starbucks inside the store. Yay! read more

I'm going to continue shopping at this store because it is open 24/7 and near my house. But I'm going to continue to grumble about it because in addition to being expensive and not well stocked (who doesn't carry fresh basil?), they don't have self-check out anymore. They used to have self check out. But they got rid of it when they installed the chip card readers. So now when I go to the grocery store at 11 o'clock at night (as I did yesterday), I have to stand in a line with 6 people in front of me waiting to check out. Each one of them needing monopoly cards and a chatty cashier who was not seeming to realize the lateness of the hour. I was beyond disappointed with the level of customer service I received this evening at this Safeway. After a 10 hour day of moving between Leesburg and Rockville, I realized my car was on empty as I made the truck back home. I pulled into the Safeway gas station at this location and reached for my wallet, only to realize I had left it in Leesburg. No doubt, completely my fault but I thought surely there would be an easy remedy to this dilemma I created for myself. I went into the gas station and spoke to the clerk (Te Lee, I believe his name was); I told him that I realized it was crazy but asked if he would accept payment information over the phone after explaining the debacle I had gotten myself into. He said he wasn't able to but very kindly suggested that I speak to customer service at the store and perhaps they would allow me to purchase a gift card and pay over the phone. From there I drove down to the store to ask the assistant store director if the gas station accepted the e gift cards you were able to purchase through the gift card mall that you accessed through the Safeway website; she told me no and said they do not sell e gift cards. I questioned her response after showing her the website that I accessed through the Safeway website. She went on to say that she knew nothing about it. The assistant director of a store knows nothing about a product offered through her own company's website?! Bound and determined to get home, I decided to purchase the e gift card for Safeway, through the Safeway link anyway. Mistake. I received the gift card confirmation, with the gift card number, through email....that I was able to access while connected to the Free Safewaywifi network. I took the email to the same assistant store director and asked if she could please transfer the Safeway e gift card to a hard Safeway gift card so I could purchase gas at the Safeway gas station at the top of the hill. She told me the e gift card needed to be printed. So I purchase an electronic gift card to turn around and have to print it out to redeem it? I explained to her that I did not have access to a printer and was not able to print from my iPad...plus, I needed gas at that moment to get home...plus, she watched as I spent the 45 minutes prior to that going through the purchasing process and waiting to receive the gift card confirmation. She continued to tell me no. I pleaded with her and asked if she could possibly do me a solid and print the voucher from the office because "I was just trying to get home"; to which she responded that she did not have Internet access. But I was on the unsecured, free "SafewayWifi", purchasing the Safeway e gift card. So I left the store...with a $50 e gift card that I was unable to use...and an empty gas tank. Needless to say with the level of service I received this evening, the gift card will go on unused and my loyalty will shift to another super market that prides its brand on customer service and setting themselves apart from the rest. To conclude...I was able to get myself, my boyfriend and my three boxer boys home to Leesburg because that same gas associate who suggested I speak to customer service...saw the tears well up in my eyes as I paid for a gallon of gas with change...followed me out to my car and handed me a $5 bill to put in my gas tank. They constantly sell expired food! Check the expiration dates on everything. Soooo many times I've gotten home or consumed something noticing it tastes off just to see its well past it's expiration date. You would think a grocery store located in a really nice area would reflect that but this Safeway is awful. Take the extra time and go to any other grocery store nearby. read more

Trips to this Safeway are usually disappointing. Here are some of the reasons why: -The Deli hours are very inconsistent. Per a conversation I had with the assistant store manager, the Deli is supposed to be open until 10pm daily, but I have gone in at 7 or 8pm on numerous occasions only to find the Deli closed. -They tend to stock many items that don't sell, while being slow to restock (or even discontinuing) items that sell well. For such a large store it's also surprising that that don't carry many items that smaller stores sell. -They rarely have enough checkout lines open in the evenings, and one or more of the self checkout stations are frequently inoperable. -I've found expired foods left on shelves for months after the expiration date. Even after bringing this to the attention of the manager, who told an employee to remove them, they were still there days later when I visited again. On the plus side, the parking is good, and the location is convenient (hence why I bother shopping here at all). read more

Almost every time I go to this Safeway one or more of the products do not ring up at the correct price. Twice now I have written to corporate about the issue, and twice now I have been referred back to local management. However local management has consistently not dealt with the problem, only issuing refunds in the specified amount... which likely means you'll wait 10-15 minutes at costumer service for maybe a dollar refund... or less. As a result I've started shopping more and more at other local stores who can correctly price their groceries. On the plus side, this Safeway does have a Starbucks, fresh sushi, and deli. But even their customer service is poor. Overall, I'd recommend buying your groceries elsewhere if possible. read more

This place is a mess. The salad bar is bland and the ingreidents are usually old or stale, especially the lettuce. Additionally, you can almost always count on atleast one of the self check out lanes being broken. On top of that 50% of the time there is no one working the self check out.
