I'm new to the neighborhood and genuinely wanted this supermarket to become my go-to grocery store, but unfortunately they continue to disappoint me. First, the seafood steamer is never working. I have even called ahead to confirm it was operational, only to arrive and find that it wasn't. I brought this issue to the manager's attention, yet several months later the steamer still isn't functioning. As a result, I have to go to Wegmans whenever I want steamed seafood. Second, there never seems to be enough staff working the checkout lanes. Regardless of the day or time, even during busy evening hours, customers are often forced to use self-checkout. On my most recent visit, I had a very large order and was still directed to self-checkout. It took an unreasonable amount of time to complete my purchase because I needed repeated assistance with machine and scanning errors. I understand that self-checkout is a convenience for some shoppers, but it should not be the only practical option for customers with large orders. I am a customer, not a grocery store employee, and I shouldn't have to struggle through checking out an entire cart of groceries myself. Safeway has a great location in a wonderful neighborhood, but the customer service and overall customer experience need significant improvement. I would love to support this store, but it feels like customer convenience and satisfaction are not a priority. read more

This store has made major improvements. Quick checkout; carts brought indoors. They help bag your groceries if you bring your own bags! Prices are comparable and somewhat better than other mainstream stores around me. Very clean and a great variety of products esp Asian products! read more

This is one heck of a large location. Sometimes it blows my mind a little, but guess it has to be with population density in the area. Definitely go on a weekday early afternoon if you can. Actually they have plenty of staffing and excellent employees here. I like the personal service, as this one stands out in that regard. Also props to the employees always helping our older folks, as they have regulars for a reason. It is a very clean store. Also it's well stocked and the employees, go that extra mile to keep it this way. My issue is the pricing. A lot of this can be inflation and at the corporate level. They don't seem to be hurting for cash, so regular prices are ridiculous, but if you're sharp sale items can be a wonderful bargain. Just be aware and you're good to go. This is definitely a beautiful store with a lot to offer. read more

Terrible experience please be careful when you shop at Safeway . I bought "Resees " peanut butter ice cream on the sticks . The box were not open but what I saw inside terrible . The wrap bags of Icecream were Open inside . Some ice cream were not peanut butter Reese's just regular chocolate ice cream and there's were exposed open . It seemed there are steeler shoppers open the boxes and replace it's with cheaper one disgusting Chocolate ones left half open. I request you do inspection on Safeway goods . Higher prices and poor inspection supervision. read more

The bakery here is the worst I have ever experienced. Week after week, nothing exciting, nothing fresh. Everything looks prepackaged and day old. The employees are never, ever there to help. The cakes are all kiddie and not fresh. But that doesn't really matter cause there's no one there to get them for you anyway. read more

I have to religiously look at expiration dates in this Safeway store and routinely find expired food items like packaged deli meats, cheeses, and peanut butter. I was there yesterday and they had the same out-of-date jars of peanut butter on the shelf which I first noticed 3 weeks ago. Now it's 6 weeks past the expired date. And it's always hard to find an employee to tell. read more

Twice now they've given me rotten and expired food in a pickup order. When I went inside for yogurt I found over 10 expired yogurts before I gave up and told an employee who didn't seem to care. Today my order had browned, moldy, mushy, rotten carrots and soggy green onions. We will be going to Wegmans from now on. read more

Service in the store can be very bad at times. For instance, this evening on a Friday night around 6:30 PM which is a busy time there are long lines -- and when you look around there are no cashiers at all. It's all self service. Later two cashiers finally show up, it takes quite a while to get through all the line and still not enough cashiers to meet the huge demand. Another frequent problem happened to me tonight I got overcharged because the store forgot to remove a sale price sign from last week so an item that should've been on sale last week. I got charge full price because the sign was still there. So I had to wait in another long line to get my refund. The store seems to have a lot of problems hiring and retaining employees which takes the service down quite a bit. Those employees that stay often as friendly because I think they're overworked. read more

Popped in around 10am on a Sunday and the store was getting restocked with produce, which was super nice to see! The produce section looked lush and fresh. They had a beautiful butcher case and their meat section was super neat! They had a variety of products that I don't see at my local Safeway in DC. I was pleased to see such a clean store and they even had a Starbucks. Their barista did an amazing job! I don't understand the bad reviews. I was skeptical about going because I saw a few recent bad reviews, but I'm so glad they had everything I needed. I got a baguette from their bakery and it was super tasty too! read more

Terrible experiences in this specific Safeway. Multiple orders wrong so I stopped going to their Starbucks. Today I had the worst experience with the lady at the checkout area. She took forever to help me. Said that she didn't care about my picture of the sale price which was very hurtful. I told her as a courtesy for all the time that she is taking she should do the override on the price which was an option because I was in a hurry and it's not right to keep the customer waiting long for issues like this. Forget getting anything at the deli if Stanley is working. If you've been there, you know the guy. Looks like Stanley from The Office. Same god-awful attitude, as well. He'll see you standing there, but won't come out to help you. If, by miracle, he does come out from the back, he'll do his best to make you feel like you're the biggest pain in the butt inconvenience to him since the day Michael tried to interrupt his crossword puzzle in the meeting room ("DID I STUTTER!?"). The rest of the store is just fine. The only other complaint is that they have an annoying habit of closing self-checkout after 8 or 9pm, leaving just one checkout lane open with a long line. Go early! Also, the gas station is a good deal if you're part of the Safeway club - you can get up to $0.20 off a gallon there. Overall, it's a fine store, but the one guy who works 75% of the time at the deli really kills it for me. read more

Better. Their delivery service has gotten better in the last year. Still they have some kinks that they haven't worked out. Heaven forbid they weigh the produce appropriately or give you the kind of apples you actually ordered! Two weeks ago I ordered gala and golden delicious apples. I received bags labeled as such but inside were fujis and granny smiths. Last week they sold me less than a pound of cherries but charged me for two pounds. This week I ordered 3 golden delicious apples and 2 gingergolds (which are more expensive). I received 5 golden delicious apples, all with the same PLU sticker. Yet they were in separate bags, and I was charged for 3 golden delicious and 2 gingergolds. I would accuse them of being thieves, but I believe it is much more likely that they are simply incompetent. read more

Safeway has always been my go to spot since it is literally 3 minutes away from my home, but everything started changing once they took out the self checkout line. I understand the reason why they took it out, but it has caused the lines to form so long at the regular checkout. The cashiers are fast and polite, but i think we need the self-checkout machines back. I usually go to Safeway early in the morning or late at night to pick up items, and usually people have that same mentality that it becomes a hugh crowd just to pay. read more

For years this Safeway was labeled as the (very un-PC) "Ghetto Safeway". The selection was limited and quality of fresh produce and grocery items was sub-standard. For those of us in the neighborhood, it was our only choice for a grocery store in walking distance. Last year this Safeway closed amidst much concern from local residents that their Ghetto Safeway was closing. Yet with death, comes re-birth as the store managers were quick to inform shoppers that a NEW Safeway would be built upon the ashes of this old Safeway. Fast forward to one year later and the new Safeway opened up a month ago on March 13th. Local residents were flooded with coupons, reusable grocery bags and an a NEW Safeway gas station which offered 3 cents off per gallon when using your Safeway club card. For those of us that don't get out much anymore, the grand opening was a spectacular event! The new Safeway is BEAUTIFUL! Much larger that its late predecessor and with a wonderful layout, we marveled at the beauty that was our new Safeway. The new Safeway not only has a gas station, but dry cleaners, a sushi bar and a Starbuck's coffee bar. Oh yeah....finally, we have something to celebrate! The best part of the new larger Safeway is the wide array of products, one of the most amazing produce selections I've seen for a big non-asian supermarket chain including a wide variety of organic fruits and veggies. Truly worth the wait and I think we've visited the Safeway at least once a week as we take our boys for afternoon walks. Yes, it's true...we are geeks. :-) read more

4 stars just for the checkout peeps are always so nice...one guy even practices his various languages on you. Perhaps because it's McLean, but I love how it's so chill and that it's not packed like a Giant (where people get cranky and rude). Great little cafe inside this Safeway! Nice salad bar with lots of fresh fruits and veggies! You also can choose from one of four hot soup selections, get sandwiches, sushi, and more! I opted for a cup of the Cajun Gumbo/Jambalaya - I believe the sign stated: "Jambalaya," but this was the consistency of Gumbo - with chicken and sausage in it. Paired it with a nice fresh salad with greens, shredded carrots and radishes, grape tomatoes, red onions, and some other misc. veggies, plus a bottle of water. There is a cafe area to sit and eat your lunch. Everything was very tasty! read more

The customer service desk is always poorly staffed or there's usually no one at all behind the desk. It is really frustrating to wait in a long line unnecessarily. I hope they will staff better. Definitely double check your receipt before leaving the grocery store because the sale prices often do not come up. read more

I occasionally visit this store to pick up items for snacks or meals during or after work. The store is fairly large for Safeway and well-stocked with a decent selection of products. They have an on premise bakery, deli, salad, soup and sushi bars. They have a Starbucks inside. There's a seating area near the Starbuck's where you can sit and eat food; free wifi is available. I generally don't buy produce or meats here. read more

Rating of this Safeway is very accurate. Though I do my best to avoid this place, just needed soda for a get together and stopped by. It had a buy 2 get 2 free mix and match special so grabbed 4 and went to checkout. At the checkout, learned that despite the tags, mix and match only applies to soda within same coke, Pepsi, Canada Dry, etc. category. Sorry I've never known who distributes Schweppes ginger ale and AW root beer. Wouldn't give me the credit unless I changed my picks despite the misleading tags. Did so and still didn't pick the right ones so gave up - waste of 35 min. read more

I was in Safeway this morning. I accidentally went out the entry door I needed a cart the door almost ripped my hand off. My phone and my wallet stopped the door from injuring my hand. Understaffed, few non self check registers open, physically, mentally slow, old, weak employees. Not as good a selection as other Safeways. Took very long to checkout. Cashier just straight up left in the middle of helping a customer ahead of me and replaced himself with a older slower man. Didn't even count the bags he himself had used and had to ask us. Too weak to pickup 12 packs of soda and jugs of tea. Would recommend going anywhere else. read more

The store is always nice and clean. The staff is nice as well. I usually find myself driving to Walmart as the prices are significantly higher at Safeway. I live literally across the street. Even though this store is the closest to me, I will not go there anymore for either grocery or prescription. Let me count the problems over the past couple of years. 1. Wrong price on items on sale. 2. Wrong item on online order and not allowing return or exchange. 3. Bad avocados. 4 Pharmacy won't replace a couple of pills that fell into a toilet without a new prescription. And the latest: I booked online for a third Covid vaccine being over 65, filled out a detailed questionnaire, and took time to print and fill out the consent form, only to be denied the vaccine because according to CDC, they could only give to those with medical problems. They said the online system is not correct. This is the last straw, I will go to a store farther away. read more

I have been living in Mclean for more than 5 years and looking for the convenience of being close to where I live to buy at this location on Anderson Road. I usually buy in this location but now I prefer to go to the giant it although it is 7 minutes farther. The reasons for not wanting to buy at the Safeway on Anderson road are several but the main one is that I can't stand the mediocre, rude and despot of the assistant manager who I think doesn't understand what kind of location he is in and the purchasing power of the people that live around. This is not his country (sorry but it is true) this location is a prime location. Mr. Priyantha is very poorly trained and also treats clients as if we owe him money. I am about to write directly to corporate because this assistant should be removed just because he has not had the right attitude of customer care and I understand that Safeway needs us and our purchases. I was thinking that the new manager at this location knows at the beginning the importance of customers but with this assistant manager, he demonstrated no knowledge at all. read more

I wish I could do negative stats for this location. Everytime I asked for customer service its always been extremely slow and seems non important to them.i went their this morning and got a few groceries and it will be the last time I ever go there unless to use the atm or get a lottery ticket only from the machine. Everyone is extremely slow and has no sense of urgency. I see people wearing gloves but I'm positive they do not practice proper sanitizing it looks like they never change them or they wash their hands with them on. I bought a spinach and artichoke dip what it tasted like they changed the flavor to have no flavor I watch their employees just sit their or talk to each other and more worried about their breaks. Minus one star for a scarcity of staff. A portion of your store is supposed to be open, I should not have to walk all the way across store to find someone to help me. Minus one star for poor english when you finally find someone, making it difficult to explain what you would like. Minus one star for a general apathy and lack of interest in helping. When I politely ask if you have any more of a particular product, your reply should not be, "I dunno, I don't know where they keep it." Minus one star for shady "sale" and pricing tactics. Advertising a 30% off sale in which you inflate the price 30% so that your sale price is the same as the going market price in other stores is laughable. Never again. read more

This place is clean decent prices. I used to go here frequently because I live across the street but then I started going shopping in the evening. I waited at a register for 15 minutes and no one ever came to check us out. We walked around looking for someone to let us pay. I haven't gone there since. Since this location is open 24 hours and very close and convenient for me, I will definitely be back to pick stuff up on short notice or if I've forgotten something I need quickly. The gas station is also on my way home, so I'll undoubtedly fill up here regularly. But when it comes to the weekly grocery shopping, I'm trekking back to my old Harris Teeter (which is also 24 hours), mainly because of one disgusting experience. Around the time I swore off buying anything unpackaged here, I saw a small bird flying all around the deli section, landing on the olive bar and generally making me want to vomit. As I stopped to gawk at the bird after it alit upon the deli scales, an employee, apparently unphased by the feathered visitor, asked if she could help me with anything. "No," I replied. I'm giving this place two stars specifically for cleanness and ample parking. The staff is not knowledgeable. Example: I ordered peppered ham at the deli counter. The price listed was $8.99 a pound. When the deli clerk was weighing it I noticed she was charging me $9.99/lb. I brought to her attention that I was being over charged by a $1.00 as the sign read $8.99 not $9.99. She said, "I don't know what you are talking about I gave the weight you asked, I again said no, you have here that it's $8.99 your computer charged $9.99 she said, I still don't understand let me get a manager. Three people to fix a $1.00 problem and 10 minutes of my time, ugh. The reason I was so adamant is because I have been overcharged at this store before, and I only noticed it when I looked at my receipt at home and it's a pain to go back. For the size of this place, I would expect more upscale merchandise, the cheese counter has nothing out of the ordinary, the olive bar looks gross and the the sushi is terrible.
