Yes... Hilltop isn't the best area in Tacoma, but I have no problems shopping at this store. They try to keep it safe as possible. As of the date of this post, they have a security guard who actually walks around the parking lot, helping to keep an eye on things. Some might say "it's so bad they need security guards!!!" but hey, at least they are trying. The guard I saw recently was friendly. I said "good afternoon" to him as I exited my car, seeing him nearby patrolling the lot on foot. He smiled and said so in return. When I left, he wished me a good afternoon and I said so back. The cashiers are friendly and generally speedy. The lines can be little long sometimes at busy times, but that just goes to show how many people DO shop there. It's a small store and they don't carry everything I buy frequently that the larger 6th Ave location does, but it's still good for the occasional quick trip for a few things I know they do carry. They are always busy with customers. I rated 4/5 since they do lack several items I often buy, but I get why they can't, due to the small store size. They are totally out of items sometimes, but that can (and does) happen at other Safeway locations too. read more

I advise anyone and everyone NOT to shop at this store! I was there for no more than 20 minutes on June 29, 2017 at 5:30 pm. When I returned to my truck, someone had completely destroyed the driver's side of my 2010 truck with a knife, pen or whatever. Of course the security cameras don't reach to the perimeter of the parking lot where I was parked. Manager didn't care one bit. I will never shop there again. read more

I don't even live in Washington state but when I went to Hilltop to visit my friends who do live there, I found this Safeway store to be a good place for basic needs. The people were nice, even helpful. The prices were good and I found an nice selection of (food) gift items for my friends. Hilltop is run-down and neglected as is the case w/ most inner city areas and neighborhoods that are essentially segregated. However, if one has eyes to see, there are well-kept streets and homes even if some are not. A slum this is not. The store is located in a mixed business & residential area. This Safeway is a disgrace to every other Safeway ever! The staff is all unprofessional, yelling around the store and having inappropriate conversations with co-workers right in front of customers. One instance, Alicia ( I think that's her name), in customer service acted like I was a HUGE inconvenience to help. If you don't like your job, then move on!! She then treated me with a huge attitude the whole time, and told me I was wrong about what I was asking for. When I told her I had purchased this same thing 1 day before, she said, "Well I don't know by who, because you are wrong and they can be fired". It actually was the manager that helped me the time before, so I doubt YOU are the correct one. All in all, this Safeway never has anything that I am looking for. They have little selection. You can't go without being begged for money at least 2 times every time you are going to this location, by people inside and outside the store. The staff is unprofessional and inappropriate, and overall every time I go into this location is only by last choice. Don't waste your time shopping here! read more

I was shopping today for odd items (i.e. chapstick, hair bands, t.p., etc.) and needed assistance at every turn. Somehow, I came across a manager who went out of his way with extra help. He hunted down everything with me, opening each glass case as necessary, item by item. He was kind, patient and very sweet. I think the customer service at this location is wonderful. I have always had great service here but today was exceptional. Thank you Safeway.! read more

Found this review on Google, and it's 100% accurate: "Do yourself a favor; spend the extra 10minutes and drive to Fred Meyer instead. This place attracts the least favorable of clientele, and the lines here are incredibly LONG! I was informed by one of the checkers that they had to cut back on everyone's hours, and it is evident because they used to have at least 3 checkers (4 including customer service), but now they only have 2 (1 checker and 1 shift manager); even during peak times 3-7pm. First of all, that's terrible that they would treat their employees like that--to put on a ton of extra work for the same pay; I don't want to support that type of management with my money. I hope the employees find somewhere better to work; hopefully the new construction on MLK is another grocery store and they hire these mistreated people. Second, you could easily find yourself waiting in line for over 40minutes for Safeway's overpriced products. Wow...I'm yelping Safeway in Tacoma. I must be digging deep for another review. I have to agree with the other review, hands down the worst Safeway I have been to. You drive into the parking lot, park and are greeted by a couple homeless people. I have nothing against homeless people, just saying this is what it is. The store could use a good cleaning. Maybe it is clean, but it's that old dirty look that's clean. Definitely needs an overhaul. read more

I had not been to this safeway in years. I admire the commitment to the onetime troubled neighborhood. That said, it is impressively well maintained and clean inside, congratulations to those responsible for keeping up standards. A reasonable selection of organic dairy and bakery products. Good beer range as well. I will think of using this store more often as it is less hectic than the Metropolitan Market where I most frequently shop. read more

If you can get past the lil' ghettoness & homeless...the customer service in there is not bad at all. People think Hill Top is ghetto but you must have not travelled to downtown Los Angeles!!! Hill Top is nothing...so get over the negative remarks. read more

How dare anyone support this place you deserve better every safeway in tacoma is remodeled and bigger and makes fresh food this one gets left over donuts from the 38th store.. Make them tear that bitch down and maybe the can keep away the bums.... My granny shopped here for years everyone gets there mess here count the check stands there used to be more back in the day...employees are great.... Fruit is garbage.... They are treating you like second rate citizens you are paying the same price....boycott it till they make it safer I hate being haggled before I go in and I use my debit card i don't have it when I come out...I am what u would say black.... I can handle my self my kids or significant other cant go here at night and I grew up in the hood I am from the 25th k st before it was the honorable dr. Mlk jr way... Smaller Safeway, which means less time after work wandering the aisles. After the little remodel a few years ago the produce got a lot better too. The people that work here are so nice! read more

There are a couple of friendly cashiers here, but it's a strange place for these reasons: It's in one of the very poorest areas of Tacoma (itself a poor city), but it's the most expensive grocery store I've ever shopped at. But that's not the worst part. What's worse is that since it's a Safeway, the price labeling is consistently deceptive. They are always playing games with the labeling, and it's rare to find unit prices on what they sell. (Of course, most of it is garbage processed food anyway, and the produce is mediocre and way overpriced, but that's a different topic). Contrast that will Walmart. When I lived in the area, I tried to get most things at Walmart, because the quality was higher and the prices were lower. This Safeway is a good example of the sort of predatory business practices that have made so many areas in the U.S. such miserable places to live. read more
