Our delivery meal was the best Indian Ive had in Bham. They packaged it perfectly to avoid spills or steaming the naan. Thankfully, Saag Paneer was a generous portion and we didn't have to stare each other down as we went for a second serving. Sooo good. You know what else was great...everything! Our Butter Naan had the perfect blend of char on the outside and fluffy on the inside. We got fried Papads. I've purchased packages from stores and heated them at home and enjoyed my spiced, crispy snack. The Saffron Papads have now ruined my home snack because it can't touch the crispy ones from Saffron. When I want comfort food, I typically will order from Saffron. They have consistently had the best quality and generous portions. Also, I will forever love them for their uncanny ability to ensure the best wrapped to-go food. It arrives hot each time and has no spillage. It does not matter what I order, it comes well packaged. I think when they first opened, the prices were a bit shocking compared to other South Asian establishments, but their portions are generous, and the care they put into packaging and temperature control makes it worth it to me. This time, I ordered the Garlic naan and the cheese garlic naan. One of the best naans I have had here locally. It was still hot and fresh, cooked just right and full of flavor. I also had the Saag Paneer, which I usually get regardless of whether I get something else. It was piping hot and still the same great quality each time I have ordered it. This time, I had the chicken Korma Curry with it, and it was delicious, per usual. The meat proteins are always so tender and perfectly cooked. Yes, I had to get my staple Samosa Chaat. It is probably one of my favorite comfort dishes. The only disappointment this time was that they did not have a mango lassi. I just wanted mango, but they had a sweet lassi that was delicious, so I was satisfied. Introduced 3 of our Grandchildren to Indian cuisine. They loved it. They especially liked the buffet style to get to know a new food family. We're not going to try to name the many dishes, but the lemon herb rice was divine, as was the curried goat and mango ice cream. Naan was good as was a puffy fried something. This place's lunch buffet was recommended to us, so we tried it out for the first time today. I guess it depends on what you look for in an Indian buffet.....for me, this wasn't it, but I can see why it may be for some. Let me break it down for you. If you are like me and what makes an Indian buffet is super fresh nann and yummy sauces to dip the nann in, then, well, go to Taj. I don't need a lot of variety or a lot of different proteins, I just need a few quality, fresh, yummy hot dishes and always hot and fresh nanns. Taj fits the bill. Saffron....not so much. You know they say first impression is the lasting impression? Well, it's true. We walked into the restaurant at 11:49am on a Friday. Hit the buffet immediately and the first thing we saw was a tray meant for nann. There were 6 pieces of nann in it. They looked flat, old, and cold. So I skipped over it temporarily, hoping it would be refilled. Got a little bit of about 9 different dishes to try and then circle back to the same sad 6 pieces of nann. So I got a couple as....well, a girl has got to have some nann. Maybe they will taste better than they look. So I sat down with my variety plate to try. Most items were cool to cold. Nann tasted as bad as it looked. I ended up with about 3 dishes out of the 9 that I thought were decent. Then fresh nann finally came out, so that was pretty good to go with the 3 decent dishes. Moving on to dessert. They have this mango ice cream that looked good, so I got some to try. It was like yogurt texture and cool but not icy. Later I saw a new pan and it was actually frozen, that's when I realized what I got wasn't how it was supposed to be, it was just that it has been there so long that it all melted. Lack of quality control was evident based on the cool/cold dishes and melted ice cream. I was not impressed overall and neither was my SO. So, under what situations would I go back to Saffron? Well, personally, under no situations. I don't want to have to keep an eye out for nanns, hoping some fresh ones will come out while I am having my meal. I also like all of my hot food to actually be hot and I found Taj to do a much better job in this area. However, if you don't care about fresh nann and you don't mind your food being on the cool/cold side, Saffron definitely does have more variety and is on par in terms of quality compared to most buffets. The restaurant itself is open and bright during the day. The employees are very nice and quick to clear dirty plates off of tables. No issues at all there! read more

Run, do not walk, to try Saffron. This is absolutely the best Indian food I have ever had in my entire life. A gorgeous restaurant in a very convenient location made for a delicious evening with my 18-year-old daughter. We started with the Samosa Chat and the Fish & Chips. The Samosa Chat was so fresh and rich and flavorful. It was stunning! Depot savory with super fresh bits of cilantro and onion. So utterly delicious. The Fish & Chips was entirely unexpected! Little morsels of fish crisply fried in a sweet and spicy Indian scented batter were utterly delectable. The chips (French fries) were so crispy and light. My daughter who hates fish ate half the bowl and RAVED about how good it was. The real star of the show was the Saffron Tikki Masala (they call it their signature dish). We ordered chicken as our protein, and I have to say: even if you're not a fan of Indian food this is the dish that will convert you. Super moist and tender chunks of chicken were swimming in a creamy, delicate sauce warm with Indian spices. We ordered butter naan to soak up all the luscious sauce. We ordered way too much food for two people, but I sent the leftovers home with my daughter. She told me she finished them off before going to bed that night. It was that good! I have been here a few times for the lunch buffet and take out. The food is pretty decent but I find the buffet to sometimes be scrapping the bottom of the barrel to find what's in the container. It is also abnormally hot in the restaurant the times I have been, not sure if their ac is working but I have seen this more than a month apart. But my ultimate complaint is the price. I feel for the price the quality is not there and not the same before it changed ownership. $24 for most of the chicken dishes at dinner is completely insane. If you compare to other Indian places in the birmingham area they are half the price on most menu items. The buffet being $21 is also not really worth it considering the first quality. When you multiple this times the number of people in a family it is just a non starter. I am not one to avoid a place for cost but at this price I have much higher expectations. There are some top rated restaurants in birmingham that don't have these prices for a chicken dish. The only reason I have gone there recently was due to Yum Yai being closed for renovations and I was standing in the parking lot. read more

First of all this was an excellent study in great customer service. We were greeted at the door by the owner. She is a gem. Throughout our meal she helped guide us to the right choices for our tastes. We all decided to get different dishes to make sure we were able to taste different spice mixtures and proteins. When the teen with us decided his food was too spicy (it wasn't), they took the food to the kitchen to tame it. I think the courtesy of our hosts and the special approach to making sure everyone had a good meal made this a great place to eat. The space has been beautifully redecorated. My friend chose the buttered chicken and I chose the goat korma curry. The food was brought out in really nice serving dishes. Both dishes were really flavorful and delicious. I would have left a 5 star but the staff could have been more attentive. It took a long time for our check to come and when walking in there isn't a hostess stand so it was a little confusing as to whether we should sit ourselves or not. I honestly think this is the best lunch buffet in all of Birmingham! This restaurant is right where the old Bay Leaf was at. There were plenty of tables inside and the buffet selection was huge. The cost of the lunch buffet was 20.99 per adult which I feel is reasonable. We had so many options to choose, from vegetable tikka all the way to goat curry. The spice level was also medium which is good to accommodate a wide variety of people. We had gotten there towards the end of the lunch so some of the desserts were done but the owner made sure to have the staff bring out fresh Mango ice cream and pudding which went above and beyond. Visited Saffron with a friend and we both LOVED it. The restaurant is spacious and clean. The service was wonderful - the staff was very kind and, while some people may not like that they left us to chat and eat, I really appreciated it. They were nearby and paying attention, so were available when we needed anything. The food was delicious. Very flavorful and such large portions! I had three meals out of one entree! I ordered the chicken Andhra curry and it was spicy, but not so much that it sacrificed flavor for heat. The butter naan was delicious. We also had Samosa Chaat and kachumber salad. Highly recommend both. Again, amazing portion sizes, especially for an appetizer.
