Saffron grill is absolutely one of my favorite place to go to when I'm racing for a gyro wrap! Keep in mind this place is about 30 mins away from me. I always order Tastea which is a boba place right next to it, just to make use of my drive there. I always order the lamb and beef mixed gyro wrap and substitute the fries with rice instead. It definitively hit the spot! The place isn't fancy but the owner are extremely friendly and welcoming! No frills place. Kind of a hole in the wall, but usually the best places are. We got a chicken plate and a gyro plate. Honestly I wasn't expecting much, but it was amazing! Omg the lady who works there is one of the best food preparers and has the most costumer service I went there on Wednesday and I was amazed at the great costume service I got and how well my food was prepared. I've been there a number of times usually it's the men who help and prepare my food. They are coo... but man I will be aiming for Wednesday's next time I'm craving a bomb falafel. Driving on 880 past the Oakland Coliseum then the Oakland Airport is, for me, akin to entering no man's land. I find myself here only once every 4 years, if that, and am immediately reminded of why I'm not here more frequently. On a late afternoon which stretched into late evening Saffron Persian Grill was a tasty detour, successful at satisfying my love of Mediterranean fare while killing time. Saffron Persian Grill is aiming to impress no one with their absent ambiance. They sit in a strip mall (easy parking), have an unelegant, wall mounted menu, and you pass by a handful of tables and chairs as you make your way to the cash register to order. The place isn't messy or dirty but it fails to convey a high degree of cleanliness. Still, I was encouraged to see the attractive plates of food being delivered to the table of a Hispanic party of 3 as well as the bags of to-go orders being carried out by a Persian family. While waiting for the meal to be delivered to my table I remarked that "this isn't fast food". Soon after, I was rewarded and understood the (not intolerable) wait. This was food prepared to order, ample and tasty and served piping hot. A side of hummus ($4) had an off-putting consistency, as if someone had spilled water atop it, but it was served with steaming pita and a side of tangy cheese and it all went together deliciously. I still don't know what created the watery top but opted to just stir it up and - voila - problem solved. A Koobideh Kabob Platter (about $10) was served with a perfect array of accompaniments adding up to a lot of food: Saffron Basmati Rice, Pita, and a Salad and creamy, pepper-filled sauce were the perfect match. As I enjoyed this platter, visions danced in my head of a possible new menu item for Saffron: A Mediterranean Salad composed of these vegetables and peppers in this sauce with that cheese and some of that meat. I'd buy it. There's nothing that would take me to these parts more frequently than my current visitation schedule but if you find yourself here, like this sort of fare, and aren't put off by a place that looks like a bit of an afterthought you can be rewarded with a very tasty meal. read more

My new obsession: kebabs. I almost went to enjoy some earlier but after admitting to myself that it would be selfish to do that, I went ahead and took my kids to a Vietnamese restaurant whilst I wish I went to eat kebabs instead [haha]. On a Sunday that I was actually free from motherly responsibilities, I went on a hike at Mission Peak then hit the gym right after. I workout well in a fasted state so I was starving by the time 5.5hrs went by. I was having problems deciding where to eat. Usually I know exactly where I want to go and what to eat but eating healthier has limited my choices. Emmalouise B. influenced me. Now that is all I want and Patxi's but that is besides the point. Yelp has done it again! I searched for the nearest and cheapest kebab place and arrived here - a hole in the wall in a small strip right outside Newpark Mall. I was skeptical but glad I proceeded. The guy that took my order was very genuine and sincere. He made me feel at ease as soon as I started to order. I got their chicken kebab plate. I also ordered a bottled water. It feels good to not be drinking carbonated drinks! I do on occasion, truthfully but I drink the real Coke, made w/ cane sugar. Minutes later, my meal arrived. I said that I would be dining there but it was boxed up. A little peeved but no harm done. Right after my first bite, I knew that I would be enjoying my meal in its entirety. The chicken was tender and super flavorful. The salad was crisp and the tahini sauce was refreshing. The pita would have been better if it was warmed up though. Now for the marketed saffron rice which lacked saffron incredibly. I was sad to taste something that tasted nothing it was assumed to taste like but it was still good.. rice was fluffy and light. WOW! Why have I just found out about this place? I work about 5mins away! I came with two of my colleagues & ordered the chicken & gyro combo ($9.99). As soon as they started cooking, you can smell the greatness. I was so excited to start eating! The place is small & empty around lunch time so we decided to dine in. Food came to us & OMG. Another hidden gem in little ol' Newark! While waiting for my car to finish getting an oil change in the Newpark area, the boyfriend and I got hungry, so we turned to Yelp for nearby places that are highly rated. We came across Saffron Persian Grill, and, once again, Yelpers did not fail us! It's a small but decently clean shop. The menu is small and consists of gyros sandwiches for about $6 ($2.50 more for fries and a drink) and gyros plates for about $9. We wanted something small-ish, so we decided on gyros sandwiches -- lamb for him, chicken for me. And oh my goodness. The sandwiches came out piping hot and looking absolutely delicious. There are wonderful flavors and juicy meats right down to the very last bite, and the portion was practically perfect for me. I'm not quite sure if the food is worth a special trip just to eat, but if you find yourself in the neighborhood and are craving some gyros, you know where to go. read more

Supposed saffron rice didn't taste seasoned and was not really colored, was a paleeeeee sminge of yellow- nothing like what saffron rice should look like. Meat was crunchy and pretty dry. Amount wise, pretty sparse. If I knew , I would have ordered extra meat for the both of us. Maybe just the places I go, but usually they are pretty generous with the meat:( . I tried out Saffron Persian Grill a couple Sat. ago. It's near Newpark Mall, but not that close. More on the Mowry Side nearer the street. They got Gyros Sandwich, Kabob Platters, Gyro Platter. Bad part is you don't see the meats on the stick like at other places, that should have been a big warning sign for me. I picked Doner Kabab Platter $9.99 - which is slices of lamb & beef served inside pita pocket bread w/ some basmati rice on the side. I really wanted lamb kebab chunks, but what I got was the generic meat you find at the mall stuffed into the pita with some lettuce, yogurt sauce, & the boring rice. I wasn't impressed. Charged it. Quick search for food outside NewPark Mall lead us to Saffron Persian Grill which turned out to be a pretty decent surprise. The menu isn't particularly intuitive though. The interior board omits numbers that may be advertised outside. And posters outside duplicate numbers that stand for other dishes inside, so you should double check the order before placing it. I mean, french fries versus basmati rice? That's kind of a make or break difference. I ended up with the prince platter which I found very filling. All of the protein was seasoned well, but the chicken kabob pieces were a little dry. The beef definitely made up for it though. It was crisp and juicy and went well with the rice. All in all, it was a very filling and satisfying meal. Not one that I would venture way out for again, but still an option if I'm ever in the area again. read more

This area never ceases to amaze me on how many "meat on a stick/kabob" places there are. You can easily eat at a different one each day for at least a couple of weeks, and not repeat. Can't do that in San Ramon, San Leandro or heck, even in San Carlos. It is unique to this tri-city area. Place is tiny and divey. Maybe 4 tables, no bathrooms, but there is a sink in the dining area to wash up. Strange but I suppose useful. Menu is mostly kabob plates with basmati rice and a salad, or gyro sandwiches. Meats listed as Halaal. Went for the gusto on my first trip and got the Prince Kabob Platter $13ish. It is 3 different kabobs with rice and salad and a whole flat pita. It is quite large and filling, so I had to split it as 2 meals. Rice: Quite legit, as the basmati was fluffy and sumac sprinkled. Salad: Decent, can't really recall the dressing but the cool veggies is always a welcoming match for grilled rich kabobs. Ground Meat Kabob: Very good, meaty and dense. Good bold spicing and perfectly grilled. Chicken Kabob: Decent marinade and nicely grilled. But they use breast meat from a very large bird, so the fibers are really thick and noticeable. I like De Afghanan and Kabul Express much more. Lamb Kabob: Quite garlic-y marinade just like De Afghanan. The chunks are a tad smaller so it cooks to a super well doneness. Last night was my first time to try this little shop. I braved the atmospheric river to arrive at a place with very little atmosphere but it was warm and dry., and I enjoyed the mom and pop, plus kids, ambience. One of the young boys has apparently assigned himself the role of announcing to the kitchen when a guest arrives. As soon as one steps in he belts out "There's a man in the door!", or even "there's a guy in the parking lot!" His older brother is learning how to take orders. Anyway, it's nothing like walking into a KFC --"There's real people in there!" I bought chicken kabobs plate with some extra gyro meat, and it was tasty and the portions were generous and it didn't break my modest budget. And I'd avise, If the order doesn't get finished at the exact time you ordered it and you have to wait a few extra minutes, stay positive and just chill for a while, your food and the interactions will make it worth the wait. One guy came in when I was there and when he was told, with apologies, that his order would be ready in, maybe 4 minutes, he looked totally put out, stared at his phone, showed it to the cook, and said with a groan, "but I came five miles!" I wanted to ask him, dude, did you walk through the puring rain for five miles?" In that case, you might have something to grumble about. But If you just drove that far in your car, then that attitude is just a bad look. to sum up, I really like to go into a family's shop that has no pretentions but a wam vibe, and see the folks taking pride in their product.
