Omg. This is the BEST Indian food, I've ever had! My husband and I have been here twice and both times it was SO delicious. The Lamb and Chicken Vindaloo are outstanding, espec. if you like spicy. We've also had the garlic naan, and the pistacio ice cream for desert, which actually had a caramel flavor, so yummy! We ate WAY too much simply bc it was so delicious. Normally, we would have brought home leftovers from a restaurant, but we just kept eating even after we were full bc it was sooooooo good, we couldn't put our forks down! Lol. Good choice for Indian in the suburbs. I live in Philadelphia so tend to stick to the places around here, but was on my way back into the city and decided to get takeout. $14 for Chicken Tikka Masala is a little expensive, but it was very good. Unlike some of the places in the city, the entree did not come with dal or naan. The flavor, though, was spot on, and reminded me of some of the best Indian food I've had, in New York City. This Restaurant has got many positives includes the location, parking, ambience and finally taste. This is a typical indian restaurant with very decent ambience and located on the road side. have been here along with my friend, we have tried the Buffet, which includes both vegetarian and non-veg. both veg and non-veg are more of a north indian style and tastes yummy. After ordering food many times and enjoying it. I ordered delivery. The food did not come after 3 and one half hours. The owner of the restaurant took no responsibility. He then refused calls. He took his phone off the hook. He stopped taking calls from my number. My partner started calling from his phone, and the owner picked right up. Then he started to refuse calls from him. He took the charge from my card. I paid for the food - but he refused to do anything about it or to even hear us out. He simply stopped responding. This is after I had decided to order from local businesses to help fund their stability in the pandemic. A place - this place - with such atrocious and incompetent service does not deserve the investment in their business. A business like this one deserves to not operate. Customers clearly are not something this business cares about. Order elsewhere. (Abridged after Saffron Kitchen claimed this is a fake review.) This is not a fake review. The incident occurred in December 2020 and was reported to Grubhub and a complaint/dispute was filed. When told this was being done, the person answering the phone said "do what ever you want." It was an order out of the Bala Cynwyd location. This is a typical tactic of a vendor that has determined that they are not pleased with a review. Just another example of the customer service ethic of this organization. This is not "fake news". Next time do better. An organization that cares about its customers would say - "I'm sorry to hear about your experience, please contact us, we'd like to know more and we will try to understand what happened and try to do better. " Instead you do the predictable - "nope it didn't happen the customer is a liar." May all who read this review keep in mind this businesses attitude towards a customer review of poor service to help you determine NOT to go to this place. There are plenty of comparable, quality and less expensive places to dine and hopefully be treated better. Wow! I'm not even a fan of Indian food (and confess that this review is written from a strictly take-out perspective as I have only had their food delivered by Main Line Delivery - try it; no delivery fee!!!). Really very good food. I've tried two separate chicken dishes (including Chicken Tikka Masala) - loaded w/ wonderfully tender chicken, served w/ nice, fluffy rice. All the breads were great. The chaat papri was quite tasty but the main dish, lamb roganjosh, consisted of a sauce indistinguishable from watered-down ketchup flavored with a bay leaf. No onions as described by menu, too thin to suggest yogurt was present. Very possibly a canned product. There are too many good restaurant options out there to give this a second try. read more

Haven't been here for a few years and now I remember why. They cater to American palate, not authentic Indian. Their food is generally quite bland though some dishes are not bad. Ratchet up your spice level request if you want some authentic flavors. I ordered a dish spicy and would say it was a low medium level, barely and spice at all. The takeout we ordered really varied in quality but the main reason for the three stars is that they continue the unforgiveable practice of using frozen diced vegetables in some of their dishes. The sambar was among the least authentic I have ever had and tasted like tomato soup with a touch of Indian spices and, yup, diced vegetables. I don't understand the good reviews. This is easily the best Indian restaurant around the Bala Cynwyd/Roxborough/Manayunk area. The vegetarian dishes are cooked perfectly. The rice is typically served with aromatic fruit zest, and you should never visit without having an order of the delicious garlic naan. I hate to say this because it's such a typical dish for Americans, but the chicken tikka masala is a must-have. The chicken has been deeply marinated, when you pull it apart you can see rich dark colors around the perfectly white centers. Also a must-have is the lamb dish. Oh gosh. The flavors are overwhelmingly good. Please have the chicken tikka masala and the lamb dish. Cauliflower dish is also amazing and deserves an award. Not to mention I love it's a BYO. My new local go to spot for Indian good that I'm very glad to have it in my life. Pick up usually takes longer than expected but it is worth the wait. All your classics such as chicken tikka masala, lamb korma, naan, samosa and raita are all top notch but there are some more unique items worth trying too. "let's go out to dinner and see a movie" - phish www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv=lfSH2IqUSUY ok, ok...it may be quite commonplace, the whole dinner & a movie thing, but it's not something i do often. and when it does happen, i inevitably get this very repetitive phish tune stuck in my head. hearing that song while listening to some live phish today in turn reminded me of a recent dinner & a movie outing. the movie, away we go, was playing at the bala theater. other than hymie's, i wasn't too familiar with bala cynwyd eateries, so i consulted my good friend yelp and found the reviews for saffron. sold! the dining room is simple and small, tables covered in welcoming saffron colored cloths, walls in a matching yellow shade and adorned with contemporary food photography. the restaurant was quite crowded, a good sign for a saturday nite, and we were thankfully seated promptly. service was a little less prompt as we were given an over abundance of time before someone came to take our order, and water glasses weren't filled as often as i'd like/need with indian cuisine. a pitcher of water left on the table, like at new delhi, would be a good idea here, if not for the lack of room on the 2-top tables. the food did come out timely, however. first up was the papri chaat (think indian style nachos, just soupier) and samosas (one of the best i've ever had!) next was the malai kofta and saag paneer, two of my absolute favorite dishes, both of which were well-prepared in my non-expert opinion, based merely on my years of experience eating these dishes in other restaurants. in fact, the malai kofta was so creamy and nutty - probably the best i've ever had as well. we also ordered a side of the mint paratha, which complimented our meal quite nicely. portions are deceivingly small when the authentic metal serving dishes are placed upon the table, as we both ate til we were full yet still managed to pack up leftovers. i'd really love to get back here again soon to try more dishes. perhaps i'll host a suburban indian UYE here one day...hmmm... what do you think, jim?? read more

We got take out from here on the day we moved in because my husband loves Indian food, and it definitely tastes just as good as it smells! They have a lunch buffet on weekends. I have been going to Saffron a few times each month for the past two years. This past week will have been my last. Seconds after our dishes were placed on the table, a live roach crawled out of my lettuce and stared me in the face. After yelling for the server to come over so I could show him the roach, he seemed very embarassed and tried to say it came from the window sill. Fortunately for them, we were the only table in the restaurant at the time, and no other customers had to witness this. Unfortunatly for them, my whole office has boycotted Saffron as a lunch destination. Saffron looks nice inside, and even the kitchen looks clean from a distance, but looks can be deceiving. There is no excuse to have a live disease infested roach with your meal...Saffron = FORGET IT!!!! read more

Came here for dinner during main line's restaurant week! I made sure to make reservations on a Friday night incase they were packed and when we arrived it was pretty crowded with only a couple empty tables. Glad we still made reservations. We byob to this cute clean establishment and the staff were very accommodating. I ordered off the restaurant week menu - 20 bucks for an appetizer, entree, bread, and desert. Got the veggie curry as my entree. Wow what a deal! My boyfriend ordered this lamb dish and he was impressed with everything. We agreed this is def one of the better Indian restaurants we have been to in the area. What made me love this place even more is that after we left I realized I left my phone on the table. When we got to the car we drove around to the front where one of the staff was waiting for us to come back around with my phone! They were so kind! Def will be back! read more

I love this place! I just moved to the area from NY, where good, cheap Indian restaurants abound. My husband and I agree that this is our new favorite place in either state. The majority of our visits have taken place on weekends because we enjoy the variety of the buffet so much, (which is always delicious, fresh, and regularly replenished.) We've gotten takeout through mainlinedelivery a couple of times and portions are very generous and come piping hot with a variety of chutneys on the side. We went once on a Friday and were a little overwhelmed by the loud, (apparently satisfied) guests in every seat. I actually feel that the ingredients in the buffet have been way better than the food we had that night, but maybe it was just because it was seriously hopping and the kitchen ran out of fresh veg? I was pleasantly surprised by Saffron, because Indian in this area has been consistently disappointing for most of my life here. Things have been changing though! (Two Tiffins in the area are a plus, but Saffron is still my first choice.) I had veggie samosas to start, split with my friend. They were really good. Then I had baingan bharta (eggplant curry) as my main course, with naan. They have a good selection of naan, which is cool, but I just got plain cause I didn't want to overstuff my self, as I tend to do with delicious Indian food. I've had some baingan bharta that's too watery (a common eggplant issue) and I've had some that has a lot of seeds in it, and both of those are gross. But this was really good, thick and creamy (but not made with cream). I think it had tomatoes in it, which was really good. Enough that I had to take it home and eat it for lunch the next day. I have eaten at saffron about 4 times in the last year. After spending the last decade living in india it has been difficult for me to find good authentic indian food. Saffron is just about as close as it gets. The food is great and the seasoning in perfect. The service can be a little sluggish but with pleasant company this is not a problem. Saffron is my favorite restaurant in this area. I love Indian food that is flavorful without being overly spicy. I only have ordered from the vegetarian section but I was never disappointed. There are also monthly specials which I choose from when vegetarian. Finally, no meal is complete unless mango chutney and Peshwari naan are in accompaniment. read more

We used to enjoy Saffron often for dinner but haven't been there in quite a while. We decided to get take-out for lunch. While the food is excellent, the portions were just laughable for the price. The chicken tikka masala lunch portion was $9 for 5 bite-size pieces of chicken. 5 pieces!!! While the flavors are fantastic and Saffron is some of the best Indian I've had, I can't justify the prices for the portions (at least for take-out). Maybe the dine-in experience is a little different given that other people have written much better reviews about their lunch experiences. read more

Eating in proved to be both a blessing, and a curse. It's a very pleasant room, a cheery yellow in the walls and tablecloths, nicely setting off the crisp white folded napkins. First of all, the dining room is somewhat small, and we arrived at an awkward time. Our party of four showed up at 8pm, when the 7pm arrivals had not quite gotten up from their tables. A "15 - 20" minute wait was probably more like 30, but that was all right--the food itself came promptly and was steaming hot. The main problem that we had was with things forgotten. Our friends ordered an aloo naan that never arrived, and a mango lassi that was similarly forgotten. The naan never appeared on the check so that wasn't even an issue, but they did charge us for the mango lassi. Still, when informed that it had never been brought out, there was a pleasant apology and the check was promptly fixed. It was a forgivable mistake though, it was very busy when we sat down. My boyfriend and I split some appetizers and an entree. The papri chaat was crispy when it came out, but was gradually soggier and soggier. Still, the pleasant clean flavors were all there. We also got another appetizer that was delicious but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called... Also, the garlic naan was even better in the restaurant, served piping hot, crispy and flaky all at once. And our vindaloo, which I found a little lacking in heat the last time, more than made up for it this time with a pleasantly burning mouth. Although we were there until at least nine or so I did not get the impression we were being rushed out.
