Saffy's was a wonderful experience. The block that it's on has really thrived since it's arrival so I def appreciate that it's there. This was actually the first of Chefs' 3 restaurants that I tried. I was blown away at the simplicity of the menu and the care an flavor of the dishes we were served. we kinda just picked about 6 things and ordered them. They were all great. I feel like eating food like this really brings back an appreciation for anything that's good worth experiencing. The service was as expected despite there being a confusion with our reservation (I know this happens to me a lot because I end up getting into places like Saffy's and Bavel and Bestia where I don't really belong). The ambiance is pretty lively and almost transports you to somewhere else. IT's quite magical that you're on the corner of Catalina and Fountain but it feels like you walked into a local restaurant in Morocco. read more

Great experience at Saffy's tonight! Went with a few friends and everything we ordered was delicious. We had the hummus, shawarma, beef and lamb kebabs, spicy fish, and a few salads. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The service was excellent as well, very attentive and friendly. We finished the night with the strawberry cake and espresso, which was the perfect ending. Great food, great atmosphere, and great service. Definitely a place I'll be coming back to! read more

Don't come at me and I know it's the same owners, but as a loyal Bavel-ite for the past 5 years I've been in LA, I was completely shocked when I dined here because it was SO GOOD. I was making mmmMMMM! noises as I ate. It was that good. We started off with the hummus ful. 9/10 yum. then we had the LOBSTER SKEWER I wish we got like ten of those but it was $40 a skewer. SO GOOD. 12/10. Then we got the gem salad - very dill forward - loved 8/10. Then we got the TURMERIC MUSSELS -- YUM 12/10 as an asian I really wanted rice with it. then we got two of the kebobs - beef and chicken. both were good. I preffered the chicken flavor-wise a little more. 10/10. then we left thinking we wanted to get oysters at Found Oyster across the way but they had a 90 min wait so we came back and waited for bar seats and got dessert - MEYER LEMON CUSTARD swirled with Raspberry was so good and we also got a strawberry tres leches. I've been wanting to try this place out for some time, and since we happened to be nearby, we decided to see if we could get in. Luckily, we snagged two bar seats. I always love sitting at the bar,the vibe is so lively! By the way, the cocktails here are just as amazing as the food. We started off with the scallops and a lobster skewer, and both were out of this world! We followed that up with a chicken, a pork, and a beef skewer, which were all incredibly flavorful and perfectly cooked. It was really good food! The flavors were really poppin' the side of pickles were the best pickles i've ever had. I wish I had more of it. I ordered the beef and lamb brisket. It was stuffed and full of flavor. Loved the indoor dining space with a view of their fire pit. Their cooking team looked and seemed really in synced. We found side street parking and decided to try their lunch offerings.. previously I e inly had coffee and the spinach feta borekas ( which are delicious) Today I had the falafel pita, nice fresh fluffy pita with vibrant fresh falafel with just enough spice.. would absolutely order this again. Enjoyed my dinner at Saffys but I think the most memorable part was the Azorean wine which is hard to come by in LA and always delicious. The skewers certainly were good too, my favorite was the Iberian pork and veal kebab. The chicken shishlik was probably my second favorite followed by the lamb and beef shishlik which were I thought just ok. Same with the marinated olives, which were a nice snack before the main meal. I was actually pretty impressed with the gem salad though it was not very large to share among a group. The hummus ful came with delicious bread that I liked too. Mushrooms were good but I recently had killer mushrooms elsewhere so these just paled in comparison All in all none of the food was bad but I certainly will not be battening down the hatches to come here again soon. We had two cocktails to start, both were good. We also ordered the scallop crudo, hummus, gem salad and sea bass. Everything was delicious. I love both Saffy's and Bestia. I hadn't been to Saffy's in a year or more and I remember it being very good. This time we came for brunch (mid Feb.) and it was as I remember it, but dinner is definitely more so my vibe. For brunch, we ordered the lamb pita (my favorite, eat it while it's hot), shakshuka, warm pita and hummus, and whichever salad was newly added to the menu. Everything was delicious, but the pita was my favorite. Very satisfying with the pickles! Parking in the area sucks, there's valet AT DINNER time, and the restaurant closes at 2pm if you're coming for lunch. It's so weird to eat somewhere when everything tastes amazing, except the thing you really wanted. It's an unusual experience emotionally haha. Anyway what I loved was that you had your choice of free water in the forms of still or sparkling. You get your own dispenser you can use. Next, let's talk about the Arabic breakfast. The salad was made well and the dressing felt quite balanced. The brioche had everything you would want in a brioche and the seeds gave it a nice touch. This was made extremely well. The clotted cream with wildflower honey, you could tell the ingredients were of the highest quality. The feeling you get when you eat this is of top tier ingredients and it just is quite satisfying. I love how the olives were marinated as well. In the shakshuka, you could tell they source dark yolk eggs, because the eggs have so much flavor. Where it all fell short for me though was the shakshuka itself. I love shakshuka. But not this one. When the entire Arabic breakfast came out, the first thing I asked was if I ordered the shakshuka individually, if it would be bigger or the same size. They said it would be the same size, which was disappointing, because this is the smallest shakshuka I have ever seen. Next, instead of being piping hot like a fresh shakshuka made in its own cocotte like how other places do it, the shakshuka was quite lukewarm. It wasn't nearly as satisfying as other shakshukas I have had. While the shakshuka had flavor, it lacked the boldness I would've expected from such a dish, which left me disappointed. But everything else was amazing, which makes the experience really weird. Like you have everything you can rave about, but sometimes you can't, so I don't know. The service is cool. You order at the counter and someone brings your food out. The ambiance is chill and outdoors or indoors with big tables. It's a neat spot. As a fan of Bestia and Bavel, I had similar expectations for Saffy's, which is the 3rd restaurant from its owners. It's been a highly recommended foodie destination for some time now, but that didn't stop it from being packed with a lively, buzzy crowd on a Friday evening. My husband I ordered the following: - Hummus Ful (3.5/5): This was the most highly recommended appetizer, so I wanted to see what the hummus was all about. It came with a soft, jammy egg that we broke up into the hummus, along with two thick slices of challah bread. It's different from the typical pita bread that tends to accompany hummus, and while it was soft and fluffy, I didn't find anything notable about this dish. - Peruvian Scallop Crudo (5/5): Each small bite packed a bright punch of flavor that was both citrusy and spicy. The scallops were so tender and refreshing; I could've eaten another five plates of this if I had no self control. - Beef & Lamb Kebab (3.5/5): The beef was tender and flavorful, where you could taste the char from the open fire grill it was just cooked in. Enjoyable, but not especially distinctive. Comparable dishes can be found at half the price in many Middle Eastern spots around LA. My husband ordered the lamb kebab and had similar sentiments. - Red Snapper Tagine (3.5/5): I had never had tagine before so I was most excited for this dish. The presentation when it was served was impressive, but the flavors, again were nothing notable. The sauce was thin and watery and fish was also a bit overcooked and not tender. - Pluot Cobbler (3.5/5) - I love stone fruit and had been eyeing this dessert but it just wasn't all that memorable. The sweet cheese biscuit was a bit too strong in the cheese flavor and wasn't a great complement to the sweet and tangy pluots. Our server provided decent service, but towards the end of our meal when things got busier, we didn't hear from him much as much. The service reminded me of my last experience at Bavel, where the same thing happened when the restaurant filled up. While I'm glad we finally tried Saffy's to see what the hype was all about, it felt like more like you're paying more for the vibes. I can see how this restaurant can be fun to visit for a night on the town, but in terms of Middle Eastern food, I'd probably stick to the Glendale area instead. read more

Came here for a girls' dinner and were really excited since this is the team behind Bestia and Bavel (both favorites of ours). Saffy's did not disappoint. Even on a Tuesday night, the restaurant was full, bustling, and buzzing with energy. The crowd was definitely trendy, which added to the fun vibe. Parking-wise, there is valet, but I was able to find street parking without too much trouble. Heads up: they won't seat you until your full party is present. We were lucky enough to sit at the chef's table, which was a great experience to see the kitchen at work. Starters: * Peruvian scallops - super refreshing with the citrus amba, though it definitely has a little kick * Roasted celery root - WOW. I had no idea celery root could taste that good! Main Dish: * Saffy's Dish Kebab - we snagged the last one and it was mind-blowingly good. So tender and flavorful. My only wish is that it was served on a metal plate so it stayed warmer, as the meat cooled down fairly quickly. * Red snapper Tagine - Delicious and nicely cooked. Dessert sealed the deal -- the banana cake with swirl soft serve was fantastic and the perfect way to end the meal. We ended up being some of the last people in the restaurant. They never rushed us, though we could tell they were starting to clean up, so we wrapped things up on our own. I love the warm, earthy interior-- lots of wood tones, pink hues, gold accents, and an open kitchen that makes the space feel lively and inviting. We arrived for our 8pm reservation but the hostess redirected us to their cafe next door since they did not have any tables available yet. We probably got seated about 30 min later which was kind of disappointing. Though we were off to a not-so-great start, the meal made up for it. Here's everything we tried: - Hummus Tahini - pretty standard, came with two thick slices of challah bread but I would've preferred pita tbh - Falafel - crispy on the outside, soft inside, and not dry at all; great dipped into the sauces on the plate - Peruvian Scallop Crudo - loved this! each bite of scallop was fresh and citrusy - Lamb Kebab - sooo tender and juicy with a really nice char from the grill; super flavorful without being too heavy - Chicken Shishlik - surprisingly one of my favorites! perfectly cooked, very juicy, and comes with a bright sauce that makes it feel fresh - Turmeric Mussels - a standout!! comes in a super aromatic, flavorful coconut broth that was warm and comforting Service was friendly and attentive! I really liked this spot. Went on a Saturday night around 7:30 and it was really crowded but they managed to get us seated. The food everyone was ordering looked super good. We started with the hummus tahini with their house bread which was pretty tasty as a starter. Then we shared the dish kabob which came with yogurt and turmeric rice. Also very good. There are so many wonderful items on the menu and today e we chose the Pickles, the Peruvian Scallop Crudo, the Hummus Tahini, the Gem Salad, the Beets, the Green Falafel, the Mixed Mushroom Tempura, and the Skewer Plate. Birthday dessert was the Strawberry Millet Tres Leches and the Orange Blossom Crème Caramel. Whew! The pickles were a nice mix of vegetables and marinated feta. There was a delightful tangy, sour, salty taste profile to tonight's introductory item. The Peruvian scallop crudo was served on the half shell (great presentation!) and featured a mix of green zhoug citrus broth, cucumber, cilantro, chili oil, and coriander. Very tasty! The hummus tahini was served with fresh thickly sliced bread. We love hummus and this was one of the better versions we have had. Creamy and delicious. The gem salad was gratifyingly large and dressed with a cultured cream vinaigrette, herbs, aged sheep's milk cheese, sesame, asparagus, and challah breadcrumbs. We all loved this salad with its festival of tastes and textures. Yum! The beets were served with eggplant puree, smoked paprika, turmeric, vinaigrette, nigella, feta and cilantro. The green falafel was memorable with each falafel served on a bed of avocado tahini with citrus pickled daikon, allspice, and herbs. Each bite of these magnificent crunchy pillows was delectable. Loved it! The mixed mushroom tempura included a Serrano herb aioli which was tasty. The skewer plate included our choice of chicken shishlik with garlic, cumin, cinnamon, green fenugreek, and sumac. The skewers were served on two sword-like skewers which was quite dramatic. They were accompanied by laffa, tahini chopped salad, and chili crunch beet chutney. These was very tender and tasty. Both desserts were excellent and Saffy's was very thoughtful and put a candle on the strawberry millet tres leches cake. We had a fantastic time with much celebratory birthday cheer! I enjoy Saffy's and know I'll get a good meal whenever I come here. My 2 friends and I met a reservation and were seated quickly. The server recommend recommended that we get 3 to 4 appetizers and entrées to share. We ended up getting five appetizers and one entrée to share and thought it was more than enough food. We ended up actually packing them and taking it to go. (honestly if I can do everything over again, I would've taken out the entrée, which consisted of two kebabs). What we got: Appetizers - gem salad: not only is the salad really pretty but it's very tasty. It's super easy to share because it's like a little lettuce cups so it's easily divisible. - Green falafel: also a very easy dish to share since all the falafel comes individually. It comes on top sauce, which was all a great flavor combination. The falafel was nicely flavored and had a good texture. - hummus ful: incredibly creamy hummus. I love the bread that it came with. The hard boiled egg was also a great combo w the hummus bread! We ended up having to get more bread in order to eat the rest of the hummus! - shrimp and vegetable tempura: this came in three big pieces of shrimp and vegetable tempura. It didn't come separately like shrimp versus veggies. Rather it came all combined together, which made it very easy to divide and conquer between the three of us. Nice creamy sauce it came with. - roasted mushroom: this appetizer was also very tasty. It comes with a runny egg in the middle that you're supposed to pull towards the mushrooms. It's a good dish, but without something to sop it up, it was kind of runny. You need either bread or rice or something with it. Entree - 2 skewers: Chicken: this came in 2 big pieces/chunks which was a tad awkward for sharing between 3 people but the chicken itself was good and juicy. Beef kebab: this is like a ground beef kebab so it was easy to break apart and had a good amount of spices in it. Overall, a lovely time and always a solid meal. I'd recommend to any of my friends! :) My only hyper specific quirk was that I had some cork pieces in my wine and I had informed the server about it. The server came back with wine in a cup that I assume was the same (since it had lip marks on it?). I guess my one suggestion(?) would be that I would've appreciated a new glass and the wine being poured in front of me bc it sent my mind spiraling whether the cup was mine or a different cup, whether i was given the same wine w just the cork pieces removed (and if so... how did they remove it?), or if they tossed the wine and just refilled my glass. lol! It's so insignificant but it still lingered in my mind through dinner and even on the drive home. I recognize it's such a dumb thing to be hung up on and I'm sure it's the latter scenario (new wine in same glass), but yeah... dunno why it stuck with me. Maybe it's an appearances thing for peace of mind? (This is def more about my personal quirks than the restaurant!) This 100% doesn't change my feelings about this place at all! I visited Saffy's in East LA and overall had a decent experience. The food was good, though I did feel it was a bit overpriced for the portion sizes. I started with the Peruvian scallop crudo, which was bright, flavorful, and probably the standout of the night. I also ordered the grilled lobster skewers and the wood-fired shawarma plate. The lobster was tender, juicy, and seasoned really well. The shawarma plate, while not bad by any means, didn't feel particularly special--though the meat was tender and the pita was soft and fresh. For drinks, I had two raspberry margaritas, both served in rocks glasses with no straws, almost as if it were whiskey or scotch. The flavor was good, but definitely not worth the price point. Service was decent. I appreciated the hostess for being accommodating and moving me to better seating when I wasn't happy with the original table. My waitress was kind and helpful throughout the meal. However she did pressure us into ordering more food which felt kind of pushy. The ambiance itself is beautiful--great aesthetic and a nice vibe--but it is very loud, and the seating is packed pretty tightly together. Parking is also a challenge unless you opt for valet. For a Bestia/Bavel sister brand -- I'd say this one would be the perfect spot if you're looking for something in between the others. A great place for groups! Plenty of shareables to choose from. And we especially loved the service!! If you want a bit of a twist to a Mediterranean experience this place is it. You'll find your hummus, kebabs and shawarma favorites all present. A bit of a spicy menu, but as someone with super sensitivity to spice, you'll have plenty to enjoy. We opted for a bunch of apps, two entrees, and of course two desserts. For our party of four we had plenty to eat with little to no leftovers. Was on the loud side so save the private intimate conversations for after but overall enjoyed our time. Service was impeccable. Truly deserve an award for how often someone came to our table. Whether it was to help with ordering, check on drink refills, water pouring, clearing dishes, you truly felt seen and always had someone just feet away if you needed anything. For me this is huge and super memorable. Would I say the food was out of this world -- sadly no, would I say there were dishes that completely blew me away -- again no, but you will enjoy every bite and you will have a good time and I think that's more important sometimes. You definitely need a reservation if you're coming here for dinner on a weekend. We arrived early and were able to find street parking a few short blocks away, but make sure to read the signs. There is also valet parking for $13. The hummus and green tahini was delicious with the warm toasted challah bread. They give you two slices, which wasn't enough to finish the dip. We were asked if we wanted more challah and of course I said yes. It was an extra $5 charge for an additional 2 slices. The Peruvian scallops were delicious. The kebabs were great too, but I'm not sure they were worth $21/skewer. Four skewers came with one laffa, which really wasn't proportional to amount of meat there was. The pork and veal was my favorite. The beef shislik was also great (pieces of hangar steak). Lamb was lovely. The beef kebab was very spicy. We were a party of 4 and had a reservation, though we had to wait 20mins to get seated, but the staff made it right by offering us complimentary appetizer and champagne! Once seated, the staff was nothing but wonderful! Every food and wine recommendation was top notch, every bite was a delight! But this one's got its own personality...way more of a laid back feel. Think neighborhood hangout meets serious flavor lab. The food is fantastic. Every dish that hit the table was cleared by us with no leftovers. It's Middle Eastern inspired but with that modern, L.A. twist that keeps things exciting. Perfect for sharing and trust me, you will want to try everything. The kebabs were smoky perfection, the hummus was so creamy it felt illegal, and the turmeric mussels? I could've ordered a 2nd round just for myself. The vibe is casual but still nice with colorful tiles, a hum of conversation, and the open kitchen showing off all that wood fired magic. After trying Bavel earlier this year, I was so excited to try their sister restaurant. So happy to report back that Saffy's is just as incredible! We snagged a last minute reservation for an early Sunday dinner tonight. We ordered wayyy too much food, but I have 0 regrets. Hummus and Green tahini: 10/10. Holy hell!!!! My first bite was heaven. I lost count how many times I said oh my god in between bites of this. The hummus was creamy and perfectly spiced. The challah was so crispy and fluffy and insanely delicious that we added on another order and paired it with the other dips throughout the rest of dinner. Just FYI they do charge for extra bread. Celery root: 7/10. This was my first time trying celery root and really liked it! It tasted like a cross between mushroom and potato. I loved the heat from the dollops of harissa it came with, though wish they added a little bit more on the side. The bed of sauce underneath was savory and delicious. Wood-fire shawarma plate: 8/10. The lamb and beef slices were tender and super flavorful. Beef and lamb skewers: 10/10. Both were melt in your mouth tender!! We were already so full by the time this arrived, but we still finished every bite! Both the indoor and outdoor seating are modern and chic. Food presentation is also gorgeous. Parking can be difficult, but we were able to find free street parking a few min walk away. They also have valet parking for $13. I was not quite as blown away by Saffy's as I was by Bestia and Bavel, but it was still very very good (high bar). The server suggested we get 5-6 dishes when we had way too much food with the 4 that we got and would have been fine with 3, so take note (and we are eaters). Shared between 3: 1 ) hummus ful: slow cooked fava beans, cumin, lemon, pickled serrano, grated tomato, soft egg, challah Definitely recommend getting one of their dips, if not just because of the fluffy challah that it comes with. There are many grades of hummus out there, and this is definitely next level. Don't think that you can get hummus any time and shy away from ordering it. 2) wood-fired yellow cauliflower: herb & strawberry chutney, pickled fresnos, ginger, curry salt If you like cauliflower, you'll enjoy this version of it, although it was less memorable than the other things we ordered. 3) baby romaine: feta, za'atar, anchovy-buttermilk dressing, dill, fried shallots A great salad. We saw our neighbors get it and had to have it. 4) red snapper tagine: tomato, ginger, turmeric, potatoes, serrano, cilantro, coconut rice Pretty pricey, but also a very generous portion. We were honestly a bit full by the time this came out and took most of it home, but I always love a tagine and this did not disappoint. Finally made it to Saffy's after having it on my list for a while, and it was absolutely worth the wait. This place stays busy, and for good reason. We ordered what felt like a solid mix of dishes to get a full sense of the menu, and honestly, everything we tried melted in our mouths. A big standout for me was the wood-fired yellow cauliflower--perfectly charred, flavorful, and a dish I'd recommend to anyone. In fact, I'd highly suggest this spot if you've got vegetarian friends in your group; they'll be more than happy with all the options here. The vibe inside is lively but fun. They had a 90s playlist going that kept the energy up, and you could see the kitchen staff actually enjoying themselves on the line, which made the whole experience feel even better. There's also a full bar inside, so don't skip looking over the drink menu--some really creative cocktails to round out the meal. The only downside was more about timing: eating here during the daytime, the space is so open that flies were coming in and out. Not a dealbreaker, but you might find yourself swatting a bit between bites. First time at Saffy's and would recommend it to anyone who loves elevated Mediterranean. Compared to the sister restaurant Bavel, Saffy's is a more casual affair but with just as much flavor and attention to ingredients. Would definitely recommend it as a nice date night or group dinner spot. Both the indoor and outdoor seating was really nice and chic. We managed to get an early dinner reservation for Saturday night and saw that as it got later, the more the crowd grew waiting to be seated. Would definitely recommend coming with a reservation, especially during prime time on the weekends. Parking situation echoes other reviews, it's not great. All street parking with certain side streets being permit only in the evening so park with caution. Valet was $13 at the front of the restaurant at the time of this review. Now for the good stuff, the food. Peruvian Scallop Crudo: Amazing, especially if you're a fan of scallops. Super fresh and flavorful. One order comes with four scallops on the half shell. Hummus Ful: Debated between the Ful and the Tahini but the soft boiled egg on the Ful got us. Great texture and rich flavor, a must try. The accompanying Challah bread paired perfectly. Lobster Skewers: Pricey but worth it if you enjoy lobster. Cooked perfectly and had a nice little kick. About the same price as the entrees so I'd recommend it if you're feeling sumptuous. Wood-Fire Shawarma Plate: Lamb and Wagyu Beef, you really can't go wrong. The meat was really tender and rich, the lamb flavor was a little strong so I'd only order if you enjoy lamb, which we did. Skewers - Chicken and Beef Shishlik: Skewers caught us by surprise and ended up being one of our favorite parts of the dinner, especially the chicken. Chicken was cooked skin on which got super crispy and flavorful. The accompanying laffa and tahini sauce were excellent paired with the meat. Waitress warned us it was a bit spicy but we didn't think so at all (we're also used to spice). Banana Cake: Banana flavored desserts are really getting their moment (as they should be). Think of this like a banana bread with frosting and pecans. We'd order this again for sure. Soft serve with Chocolate Shell: Nothing too crazy but it was a refreshing finish to the dinner on a warm evening. Ambience (5/5): It is a very beautiful well decorated restaurant. Definitely a great date spot. Service (4/5): I felt like the server was pushing sales. Suggesting that we order extra bread knowing that we're about to get so much more pita bread with the main courses. Suggesting that we order more food as if each serving was small, although most of the mains were very generously portioned. Aside from that, however, they were friendly and attentive. Food (5/5): I really did enjoy their food. Wood-fire shawarma plate is DEFINITELY the highlight of the night. Paired perfectly with tahini that has a nice kick to it (adjika, beet chutney etc). meat was super tender and juicy. Skewers were delicious and very flavorful. I just wish they had more whole solid chunks of meat option for lamb (like the beef shishlik) instead of just grounded meat options. The hummus ful was one of the best hummus I've had and it was paired with a nice warm fresh bread.
