I heard that there was a sandwich place nearby and I went to check it out. I didn't know what to expect but I definitely did not expect a small bone to be in my beef sandwich. The bone was small enough for you to think it was something else but it was also big enough for it to get stuck in your throat . If my children encountered the bone then they probably would have swallowed it not knowing what it would be and it would have gotten stuck in their throats. Years ago this place used to be very good under the original management. However the last two times the new owner/manager was rude. He hated his customers and could not wait for us to leave as he wanted to close up a little early. This place is not at all welcoming. However this last time the service was even worse! The food quality is now the lowest and quite a disappointment. The two waiters tried, but there was a severe language barrier as they only understood Spanish. They did not even know what they were serving,and it took several times for them to even barely figure out what we wanted. The pho tasted bla and boring like out of a can. When I am in the mood for some Bun Bo Hue and don't want to make it myself this is the place to go. It lack some flavor but it will do to suppress my cravings. I've come here several times over the years and have always had a great experience but not this time. I ordered a regular sized Pho w/flank and the meat (you receive about 2-4 pieces) was all fat. I told and showed the waitress the fat flanks and she stated the fat on the beef varies depending on the day. She didn't even attempt to make any corrective actions to create a better dining experience. With so many Pho places popping up not worth being loyal anymore. I'm sure I can get tasty Pho elsewhere. Also, as a single diner, the waitresses seemed more eager to help and serve groups and kind of just had me waiting around for my drink or limes etc. What a disappointment. About 3 weeks ago, the wife and I wanted to try the other Vietnamese restaurant in this plaza (Kevin's is the other one) as we like variety. Upon looking at the menu, I was pleased to see they served one dish I particularly love when I'm hungry: Banh xeo! FOOD As mentioned I ordered Banh xeo and the wife ordered bun rieu. The banh xeo was crispy enough on the outside but not too oily like some places make it. The filling was the main disappointment for me as the shrimp were truly shrimp sized! It was filled with a good portion of pork and bean sprouts though to make up for the pigmy shrimp. It came with a side of lettuce and the requisite fish dipping sauce. Overall I liked it, but I've had better. Oh we also ordered a papaya salad. It was decent and we've had better. We'd probably pass on this and try something else. They have an enormous drink menu. I mean huge. We didn't order any drinks though except a Sprite for me. SERVICE Excellent and prompt, though we did come in at around 3:00pm. The beef pho was very bland and the thai tea tasted very watered down. Felt very unwelcomed the minute we came in. When we had questions about the menu, the man at the register seemed annoyed and answered very dryly. We also had water with our meal and it tasted very lemon-y (in a bad way) & our spring rolls (not pictured) were gigantic and overall weren't very good. For a pretty basic and standard meal for pho, I am definitely disappointed. I'm very sad because this place was extremely good and lively before the pandemic. Maybe they are under new management? If that's the case, the quality has definitely gone down. We were literally the only ones in the restaurant at the time and I couldn't be more dissatisfied with the food, drinks, and especially with the customer service. I come to this Vietnamese resturant for one reason, Bahn Xeo! Their Vietnamese Crepe is a dream. It's crispy, tasty, and refreshing. The crepe almost looks like a omelette but it is much more than that. The crepe is made with their rice flour and turmeric and added on pork belly and shrimp which makes it all worth it. The inside has bean sprouts, and you eat it with all the fresh herbs they give you (lettuce, mint, cilantro). Dip it in fish sauce and BAM. Literally the best thing ever. read more

Hard to fine perfectly chilled Spring Rolls so very fresh tasting, many restaurants serve them warm at room temp. The Service was very good, in most Vietnamese Restaurants its hard to get a return visit to your table once you been served, no lie! But I was checked on a few times, water refilled etc. This restaurant was very clean, with nice decor. Being a regular here, I am never experienced a bigger middle finger to a customer in my life. They purposefully ignored us, I had to walked up to them a get a fork. The make mistakes on the order and looked at me like I lied to them. I had ordered two smoothies. Waited a good 20 mins, walked up to the counter, asked them about it. I definitely recommend getting the chicken curry rice noodle soup here. It is super flavorful and really good and comes with the right amount of chicken. For a medium bowl it's $7.95, large is a dollar extra. The service here wasn't too bad. The waiter refilled our waters. It was funny when we first walked in though. Their open sign wasn't on so I walked in and asked if they were open. The waiter said, "no, we open at 10." I then told him it is 10. Then he looks at the time and said to come in and sit anywhere. Today was my first time eating here. I was greeted immediately and the staff was very friendly. I ordered lunch to go and it was ready within 15 minutes. I ordered the large Pho Beef/Flank Noodle Soup and my co-worker ordered the Chicken Curry Noodle Soup, which she orders at least 1-2 twice a week. Both entrees were large and all of the ingredients were fresh. The broth was delicious and flavorful. We were both happy with our lunch selections and completely satisfied with our experience. I'm definitely going to be getting the Chicken Curry Noodle Soup on my next visit. The restaurant location is not directly on Willow Pass. It's located behind Starbucks, next to Sunrise Bistro. Parking could be a little tight, but if you park closer to Fry's or the parking lot across the way, it's easier to park and get in and out of the shopping area. If you're going to the restaurant during the lunch/dinner rush, I'd suggest entering from the Market St./Fry Way or Sutter/Harrison St. I'm definitely looking forward to my next meal at Saigon Bistro. WHAT HAPPENED? This place do not even deserve a one star! Original place was Saigon Bistro for years - over 16 years that my family and friends go to and enjoyed - then it was changed to Oda Sushi and became CRAP! Went there for lunch today, person in the front cashier was dirty, rude, ornery, impatient, and flat out confrontational. We have to order from a menu in front, then pay, and we wait at a dirty table. Food came out, a server, who seems like did not take a shower for months, with dirty baseball cap, brought the food out...fast. Not even 2 minutes...meaning food were prepared in advance and just sitting on a warmer tray. Table has no utensils like forks, etc. When the front person gave the forks and ice to us, he has this mad look in his ice, saying " how dare you ask for forks and ice!" Once they put the food on the table - he ran away. I stood up went to the kitchen area to ask for ice, hot water, and forks, and the kitchen and food prep area were FILTHY! OMG! I gagged from the stench. The cook was a disheveled old man, looks like never took a shower in his life and not wearing mask and gloves. Since we pre-paid, we have to eat what we ordered. YUK, items in the vermicelli noodles were fishy, and old. I mean OLD. The other order, the tempura batter, is unexplainable! The grilled pork was chewy and just nasty! We ate one-eight of the serving and we just had enough, and just quickly left with DISGUST! They saw that the food they served was not eaten. it's not even worth demanding for money back. In addition, my brother sitting by the wall saw a COCKROACH crawling by his side. That's when we all ran out! If you had good experience, good for you. We did not. It's pretty packed even on a weekday and also a ton of people ordering to go at the counter. The bahn mi looks pretty good and is just about $5, but a friend said it wasn't filling. The rice plates with egg and vermicelli noodle bowls are more filling (and more $). The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the egg roll, a little too doughy and almost like it didn't get cooked through quite right. Their noodles are so good though, not dried out at all and perfectly soft. There are cucumbers and lettuce at the bottom of the bowl so make sure you mix it all together! Warning: the service was very slow and expect a wait for the food. Go and people watch and don't worry about it (and don't come if you're in a rush). read more

This is my daughter's favorite restaurant. She calls it 'our' restaurant. I will give her a choice of chicken nuggets & fries or pizza and she will demand we go eat at 'our' restaurant. One night my sister took her out for dinner and this is where my daughter insisted they eat. We even have our favorite corner booth. I prefer the service here over the Pho place closer to our house. The lighting is relaxing with 2 large screen TV's usually with a game on but not too noisy. Kevin the owner is a sweetheart and very accommodating of my special request. The little one gets the Pho Ga children's meal, a hearty bowl of chicken noodle soup with tasty broth and shreds of white meat chicken and a orange soda. Since we eat here one to 3 times a week(the things we do for our kids......) I attempt to rotate what I eat, #61 the noodle bowl with fresh veggies and a large amount of flavorful grilled pork with a crisp, hot spring roll. I also love their chicken curry soup with bread for dipping, very smooth perfectly seasoned coconut curry broth with 2 legs and a thigh, taro chucks and fresh veggies, and recently I have been eating the 'crepe' it is nothing like a french crepe I am accustomed too, it is a dense egg and bean disk filled with shrimp and roast pork and some type of bean, maybe mung beans? and vegetables folded over with a large side of lettuce leafs and veggies to make a wrap out of it and tasty fish sauce. read more

Like, Rachel H, this was my first experience with bahn mi. Jackie V and I arrived a few minutes before Rachel H and her hubby and made a bee line for a booth. We quickly realized, after Rachel H and her hubby arrived, that the booth was way too teeny for us. Granted, we are giants (all 5'9''+) but we still usually fit in booths built for four. We moved to a table and that turned out to be a much better fit. I was tempted to order one of everything but finally settled on the chicken bahn mi. For less than $5, I was worried that it would not sufficiently fill my tummy in preparation for an evening of karaoke, but it ended up being the perfect amount. It was also very tasty with crunchy fresh veggies and dipped in my mixture of plum sauce and sriracha. I like dipping things and appreciated the plum sauce and srirachi bottles readily available on each table with cute dishes to create your own ideal concoction. My friends did not seem impressed by the pho so I will probably just be back for the bahn mi. This will definitely be on my list for potential midweek work lunches. read more

Tried the Pho Tai Nam, my usual. medium size. Their medium is as large as many larges in some places. Fresh condiments, excellent cuts of meat. I was going to Fry's to pick up some computer items and stopped in for a quick bowl of Pho. It was years ago when Saigon Bistro first opened and was just your typical Pho joint. It has changed since then and has a more modern feel. They had TV's and bar stools so I chose to sit and watch the Giants game. The worse part? Us orering means we walked up to the register after being told "It's table service and I"ll take your order" and "I'll be right there" 5 times over the course of 30 minutes. My husband and I decided to check Saigon Bistro out on our shopping trip to Fry's. Our first impression was very good. The place is clean and has very coloful walls and artwork. There are 2 flat screen tv's which are viewable from pretty much anywhere. Considering it was the NFL playoffs, this was important for my husband. We choose 3 dishes to get a feel for the menu. I chose the wonton noodle soup, my husband choose the grilled pork with vermacelli and egg rolls and we shared one of the grilled pork sandwiches. I loved my soup, although I won't be such a piggy in the future and I'll go for the small bowl. We both agreed that the sandwich was absolutely wonderful, and worth a trip back just for itself. My husband loved the pork & veggies, but wasn't hot for the noodles. There wasn't anything wrong with them, he just is a fiend for rice. So he's already planned to get the same dish, but with rice instead of noodles. I'd recommend this spot to others, we will be back for more!
