Cool place that could be the best stall in the French Market. It's certainly not the cheapest though. Saigon Sisters has the street style Vietnamese. Banh mi and other handhelds. The prices are kind of high for the portions, but not unusual for stuff in the rest of the market it seems. After getting here before our train, we came here to eat. It's one of the places that opens pretty early, so it's good if getting something for later. This is one of the stalls friendly for vegetarians. Okay prices on most items. There's a pretty good variety. Each of us got the Tofu Banh Mi. It's about $10 for a sandwich. Crispy bread but that changed fast. Kind of small but it was okay. This came with cilantro, cucumbers, daikon, jalapeños, red peppers, and sesame seeds. Had a bit of a spice to it. This certainly wasn't the best banh mi. Kind of soggy bun made it a bit of a bummer. If you feel kind of done with fast food, remember, savory, sweet, spicy, and fresh veggie Vietnamese flavor combos are available. For a place that has to deal with sudden lines, they move pretty fast considering what you will be eating. Everything is pretty decent. I love the minty shrimp spring rolls. What a treat this place is. I had the Pad se ew with chicken. The chicken was roasted well with lots of flavor on its own. The Pad had a unique flavor that was just right for the dish and not to much. I also enjoyed the fried rolls as an appetizer. The atmosphere was pleasant and the staff was wonderful. Ordered the Piggy....I don't know what kind of sauces they use to cook the meat but if it was made into a lollipop, one could just lick that and be happy. The bread that is used for the delivery of goods into your mouth is perfect. It's strong enough even with the juicy contents but perfectly soft when chomped down on. The Piggy was sadly over before I knew what happened. I got lost in bahn mi heaven. If I had know how awesome this would be...well I would have turned into a piggy and ordered one for the train ride home...but sigh...I had 3 minutes run up stairs and leap on my train. We were in the French Market and this was one of the places that I've been wanting to try for a while. We got the Porky (Pork Belly Banh Mi). It was a good size and under $10 so not a bad value. I'm sure you could probably get cheaper Banh Mi's elsewhere in the city though. The sandwich itself had relatively good flavors but was unlike other, more traditional Banh Mi's I've had in the past. It was also very saucy. The reason for the two star review is that the smell of the sandwich was very off putting. I actually couldn't finish it all because it smelled so weird. I don't know if it was because the meat was left out too long (the sandwich came out suspiciously fast) or for some other reason, but it definitely smelled off. Lunch at the French Market. Met up with a buddy for lunch and after kicking around the idea of where we'd go, we settled on Saigon Sisters. They've got a few different options from soups to rice bowls. We were all about the banh mi. Porky, the pork belly one, for me and the VBQ-Vietnamese BBQ, for him. Hold the mayo. Seems like most of them come with mayo on them. So, if that's not your thing let them know. Fresh and chewy french rolls and a tasty sandwich. The jalapenos added a nice kick, though it was only on the last few bites that it dawned on me how much a nice dousing of Siracha would have added. I don't remember seeing any kind of fixing station, so that oversight is on me. I'm sure they've got a bottle sitting around somewhere. Next time hook me up with the spicy. So when I came in and saw it empty, I made a beeline to Saigon Sisters, a place I've had bookmarked for a while and ordered the classic banh mi. The sandwich itself was tasty, but it did not remind me of a banh mi. It actually had a lot more meat than I usually get in a banh mi but it lacked that flavor that is often associated with the popular Vietnamese sandwich. I think the problem for me was that the sandwich wasn't balanced enough. It was a really good ham sandwich with pickled radishes basically. It didn't have enough pate, cilantro, jalapenos or that savory taste. Also, the bread so so crusty it felt like I swished around some gravel in my mouth. The roof of my mouth was destroyed. It was a good basic sandwich, but not for $8. Again, it was a bad impulse buy. For $8 back home, you could get 3 banh mi's, get two free, and have the restaurant owner's grandmother come to your house to feed it to you. read more

Its been over four years since I've had a banh mi so I was really excited to try one of the sandwiches at Saigon Sisters. I ordered the "porky" because lets face it, little piggies taste so good! The french roll was excellent. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The pork was tender, but when I took it apart, it was very fatty, as in strips of fat between the meat. I prefer the fat in my pork to be incorporated into the meat so I feel a little less guilty about eating it (reasons why I dont eat bacon). When I saw all the fat, I totally lost my appetite! Overall the sandwich did not have much flavor. The radishes and other fixins werent very vinegary like I'm used to. It just didnt taste like the ones I've had back at home (in San Francisco) which in my opinion were a little more authentic. I know someone who tried the duck sandwich and she said it was only ok. The talapia special got rave reviews though. The prices were a bit much for the sandwiches. Back at home it costs $3-4. Not $7+. I guess its just the price you pay for something located downtown. I'm happy there is a Vietnamese shop in the downtown area though! I would be willing to go back and try a different sandwich. read more

After making a loop of the French Market it was this Vietnamese sandwich booth that tempted my boyfriend and me to stop for lunch. Big banh mi sandwiches stuffed with a variety of flavors beckoned us, as did the friendly service. I got the Hen House ("caramelized chicken, lemongrass, ginger, mint, lime, crushed peanuts" -- a nice amalgam of flavors); he got the Suntanned Cow ("coconut milk braised beef, kaffir lime leaf"). Both were contained within hearty, crusty torpedo rolls: a nice choice, to hold in all that goodness. My sandwich also contained some kind of mayo-y sauce, peppers (jalapeno?) and a lot of cilantro; I didn't know that these items would be on there or I would have asked for no cilantro, but it was easy enough to get off the top (and the young man was happy to appropriate it for his sandwich). Overall, a good choice; the chicken tasted like it might have been hanging around for a while but the "caramelized" aspect made up for it. The boy also liked his; neither of us had trouble polishing them off. Saigon Sisters had a nice array of beverages on offer, from San Pellegrino Aranciata to Coconut Water to Argo iced teas. I have picked up Saigon Sisters a number of times from their French Market location. I usually get the hen house which is pretty tasty and a little spicy. However, on a few occasions, the chicken has been very fatty and not great. They have very fast service and a number of menu items, so it appeals to all tastes. They also make sure to ask if peanuts are ok as well as spice level on each order. Friendly and tasty, but somewhat inconsistent on the orders. read more

My first meat at this nice French Market. I tried the Pho noodle. Pretty decent. Then saw the raving review on the sandwiches. So I made my second trip to just try that. you know what, I will stick with my Pho. I'm biased on a bowl of noodle soup vs a sandwich especially when the prices are the same at $8 something. Did I have better pho than here? Yes, I did. But within 5 minutes walking from my office, I am pretty happy with this decent pho noodle soup. The portion was just nice. The noodle was cooked right. I stumbled upon these sammiches on the way to the bathroom at work. Apparently these were leftover from a meeting that was catered. Would this stop me from trying my first ever Vietnamese sandwich? Me thinks not! Since Saigon Sisters is right near where I work, I've had mixed connotations of the place. The line is always long, which sounds awesome, but every time this one girl gets a sandwich from there, it stinks up the entire office. These sammiches did not smell, so I'm not sure which one this girl got that cleared the room quicker than Justin Bieber at a nightclub. There were a few different sandwiches to choose from -- chicken, duck, or BBQ pork. They appear to be similar in terms of what they put on them -- meat, some white sauce, fresh cilantro and carrots/onions. I decided on the chicken. The sandwich was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The chicken was tender, the sauce was awesome, and the fresh cilantro gave the sandwich a unique but awesome flavor. I'm salvating just writing about it. Again, this is my first ever Viet sammich, so I don't have any other Vietnamese sandwich to compare it to, but for my first experience, it was terrific! read more
