    01/09/26 - Sesame Balls
    Dexter D.

Sai's was my go-to place for lunch when I worked in Livermore. Luckily, I survived my years of servitude and retired in January of 2020. Every now and then, my wife and I still make the pilgrimage to Sai's to see our friends and enjoy a meal. This night we ordered: Asparagus Prawns - 5 - When the ingredients are fresh and you know what you're doing, the resulting dishes will be delicious. My wife is particular about her asparagus, too skinny is not acceptable. It has to be medium to fat, and of course, not woody. I'm more particular about my prawns. I can't stand overcooked seafood! Bitter Melon Chicken - 5 - Bitter Melon can be soaked in water to remove some of the bitterness before cooking. Then you want to cook it so it's no longer crunchy but not so much that it's mushy. Sai's always does a great job with it when it's in season. Oyster Pancakes - 4 - A slight downgrade because of the size of the oysters. Maybe I'm simply greedy but I want more! On the other hand, the egg was well seasoned, tasty and not overcooked. Sesame Balls - 5 - These were fried a little darker than usual but that just makes the sesame flavor pop! A great way to finish off a meal here at Sai's.

Vermicelli bowl with pork & imperial roll

So happy we were in town so we could visit our favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the Tri Valley. The owner, Fong, and her husband are quite the duo! Food is consistently delicious, fresh, and served piping hot. Our all-time favorite dish is the basil chicken over rice. I have not found this dish tasting like this elsewhere and I often crave it. We decided to of course order this dish along with a vermicelli bowl with pork and imperial rolls. The vermicelli bowl (aka bun) is a lovely combination of umami-rich flavors from the protein, rice noodles, lettuce and other veggies. There is a light sauce that you can pour over the dish, as much or as little as you prefer. The egg rolls and grilled pork round out this dish nicely. The basil chicken, as anticipated, was incredibly delicious with a nice subtle heat. What a wonderful meal. Fong is friendly, courteous and so hard working. She wants to ensure you have a nice dining experience. I appreciate that she will come over to chat when she's not too busy. We always try to visit this restaurant when we are in town. Can't wait for our next visit!

GLUTEN FREE.. yes you heard me, gluten free chicken chow mein!!! And so many more gluten free options. They always double check with me to let me know which ones I ordered are gluten free and not because the rest of my family doesn't have an allergy. 10/10 my go to take out

This was our first time visiting Sai's T Restaurant. The food exceeded our expectations and our server Fong did an excellent job with recommending what to order. The tea with the food hit the spot and the complimentary soup at the beginning of our meal was quite hearty. We are beyond impressed and looking forward to returning again!

I recommend making a reservation just in case since seating is limited. Some of our favorite bites were the anchovy toast and the seafood chowder. The total bill was over $100 and neither of us were particularly that full, just satiated enough. I don't recommend coming here for a full dinner if you're hungry or have a large party. You can definitely get full, but it will cost you! It's a nice appetizer/happy hour spot as a precursor though. Overall it was a nice experience and we'd stop by again to explore any new menu additions!

You can choose between bar seating or a table--we went with a table. The space is cute, modern, and has a great vibe. One thing I really appreciated is that all the sashimi dishes came pre-seasoned with thoughtful sauces and toppings. We didn't even need soy sauce or ginger--everything was already balanced and flavorful. Oysters (3.5/5) Solid. Fresh and clean, and great value for a dozen. We added "the works" for $3, which came with extra sauces--definitely worth it and added a nice variety of flavors. Uni Toast (4/5) Really good. Served on a crispy ube toast with great presentation. Definitely on the pricier side, but expected for good uni. Worth trying if you're into uni. Tuna Crudo (4.5/5) Really enjoyed this. Flavor was good, but the crispy bread was a highlight for me. Some might think it's too crispy, but I loved the texture. The wagyu juices tied everything together nicely. DIY Handrolls (4/5) Fun concept--comes with mini sheets of seaweed, rice, and hamachi so you can build your own. The fish tasted fresh and high-quality. The only downside is I wish they gave more seaweed. Cured Chirashi Don (4.5/5) The sushi rice was honestly one of the most flavorful I've had--very pronounced vinegar taste (in a good way). The fish was fresh and of high quality. Definitely a standout. Overall, this place leans on the pricier side since it's small plates/tapas style--we ended up ordering around 7-8 dishes to feel full. That said, the flavors are unique and I liked how some of the fish was lightly seared, adding a nice aroma and texture. Service was solid--our server checked in regularly. They also brought out cookies and milk for my birthday, which was a nice touch (not free--$8--but still worth it). Would come back to try more dishes

Warm earthy tones in the decor made for a comfortable, inviting atmosphere and the light jazz ensemble and lovely vocal performances elevated the evening's experience. The ambiance is a strong point. Being a paella newbie, I definitely looked forward to tasting a version especially after watching cooking shows over the years. The saffron broth rice nicely counterbalanced the seasoned shrimp, sausage and other ingredients. Thumbs up. I had several portions. The tempura cauliflower - good. KR Enchiladas were cheesey and rich, plumply filled, and the accompanied rice accented with corn. Since we shared the three enchiladas, my small piece was enough for me. Suggest passing on the sourdough side that came with the paella. The bread had melted, but cooled cheese on it and there was not much free broth in the paella to soak therewith anyway. With water being the group's primary beverage, perhaps request a carafe of water at the table to ease the thirstier folks (me). Our wait person gave helpful suggestions and efficient service. The rest of the staff had hustle. As normal with live music, be prepared to raise your voice and repeat yourself in conversations. Born and Raised in Pleasanton, lived in Livermore for past 25 years - see this place all the time but never went. Why - because the sign does not say Burger and Steaks.... But I saw a picture of the Onion Rings and that was the hook... so finally went and to be a good sport I ordered the 1 fish and 5 shrimp meal and Onions Rings. Let's get it over with the Onion Rings were amazing - the batter was light, not doughy ad the onions tender. I bet you want to see how I rate the fish..... So I ordered the Fish and Shrimp - and I'm not going to lie - 1) they were clearly fresh and not packaged processed bits. I'm down with Shrimp and these were amazing. Big, butterflied, tender and NOT rubbery and the batter was perfect consistency. Blind folded I may not have guessed immediately the fish was fish. 90% of the time cooked fish taste... well... fishy. This fish log was very light, flaky white fish that did not taste "fishy" and battered perfectly Several other reviews noted how clean it was... I wanted to challenge this but it is true. For a very small place that fries in oil all day you might expect sings of residue or grime. Nope - It was Very Very Clean. I have also wondered how a business like this can last for well probably longer than I've been alive which is a long time... in our time there there was a steady stream of seated customers and take out orders.... Probably people that would not normally say they do not like cooked fish.... The staff were super nice and gracious and helped with refills on drinks. Now I'm very curious on their Jalapeño and Zucchini appetizers that also look freshly house made. Thank you for the pleasant meal and making a cooked fish hater enjoy his meal of "cooked fish".
