I hate cooked fish... WOW what a way to start a review for a Fish and Chips Place. But I love onion rings and it is hard to find truly house made and battered rings. Born and Raised in Pleasanton, lived in Livermore for past 25 years - see this place all the time but never went. Why - because the sign does not say Burger and Steaks.... But I saw a picture of the Onion Rings and that was the hook... so finally went and to be a good sport I ordered the 1 fish and 5 shrimp meal and Onions Rings. Let's get it over with the Onion Rings were amazing - the batter was light, not doughy ad the onions tender. I bet you want to see how I rate the fish..... So I ordered the Fish and Shrimp - and I'm not going to lie - 1) they were clearly fresh and not packaged processed bits. I'm down with Shrimp and these were amazing. Big, butterflied, tender and NOT rubbery and the batter was perfect consistency. Blind folded I may not have guessed immediately the fish was fish. 90% of the time cooked fish taste... well... fishy. This fish log was very light, flaky white fish that did not taste "fishy" and battered perfectly Several other reviews noted how clean it was... I wanted to challenge this but it is true. For a very small place that fries in oil all day you might expect sings of residue or grime. Nope - It was Very Very Clean. I have also wondered how a business like this can last for well probably longer than I've been alive which is a long time... in our time there there was a steady stream of seated customers and take out orders.... Probably people that would not normally say they do not like cooked fish.... The staff were super nice and gracious and helped with refills on drinks. Now I'm very curious on their Jalapeño and Zucchini appetizers that also look freshly house made. Thank you for the pleasant meal and making a cooked fish hater enjoy his meal of "cooked fish". Called in a order for pick up, Combo #2 - 2 piece fish, 5 prawns and chip, & a side of fried oysters. The service was fast, when I there about 10 minutes after the call, it was ready. The texture of the fish was good and fresh, but the batter had no flavor whatever. Not even the tartar sauce could make it better. They also didn't give me any vinegar. Oysters won't any better. If youre looking for good fish and chips, or maybe great, I found a place today. I had not expected to spend my birthday celebrating alone, just a few wishes and texts nothing over the top. I was more than half way to Livermore so I decided to try Louise's. Many of the best places are not fancy or expensive and I was not disappointed. This place is like the proverbial hole in the wall, but clean and tidy, spick and span kind of place. There is a decent size menu of items, combos of fish (cod), prawns, calamari, clams, oysters and chicken. They also have sides, extras, drinks including beer and wine. I got the #4, 2-pc fish and chips for $12.40. Their prices must have dropped than what is shown online. Sales tax in Livermore, Dublin and Pleasanton is 10.25%. My order was cooked fresh. The fish is dipped in a cornstarch batter. After a few minutes, I heard the timer go off when it was done. A paper lined basket was brought to my table on a tray with malt vinegar, tartar sauce and catsup. It looked very good and golden brown. The taste test was awesome. light, crunchy and flakey fish, very yummy and no taste or smell of oil or any reside. It was perfect. The malt vinegar and tartar sauce not too tangy went very well with the fish. I ended up eating everything, nothing was left. The value is the 3-pc fish and fries, I think was just $15.50, but the 2-pc was just enough for me. Next time, I will try the calamari and fries. I dont think I need to head to SF, Fishermans Wharf, or Sausalito for good fish and chips. It's right here in Livermore, owned and operated by a husband and wife team. They are very friendly. Came here for the fish & chips and left a happy camper. I've been on the hunt for a F&C place after my beloved go-to Dublin Fish & Chips closed years ago. We ordered the Family Pack - 10 fish & chips. Plus a large side of Cole slaw. We dined in and the food came out quickly. The fish was cooked to perfection - batter was crispy and golden, the fish flavorful and flaky. Not greasy at all. There were no soggy spots bustin through the breading either. I don't understand it but I'm lovin it. There's no shortage of sauces in squeeze bottles - tartar, ranch, cocktail, ketchup. Pro move. Plus malt vinegar. The coleslaw is thinly shaved and delicious - served chilled, not too over sweet or vinegar-y. Just right. The seating area in front was clean and I didn't leave smelling of fried food. The staff was friendly and helpful. Although we arrived 30 minutes before closing, they did not rush us out which is so appreciated. Omg this place is so cute and friendly! My roommate recommended me to try this place so I went with her! Huge portions of fish and just enough fries and unlimited sauces. The Owner was really nice and hes chinese! The place is small but its really nicely decorated. They bring the food right to your table which is really nice. I have to admit, I'm pretty picky when it comes to fish & chips and rarely find one that I actually like, but this place completely exceeded my expectations. The fish was fresh and flaky, the batter was light, crispy, and flavorful without being too thick, and the fries were perfectly crispy without feeling greasy. Even the tartar sauce was really good. The couple working there (I'm assuming they're the owners) were so kind and attentive, which made the whole experience even better. Overall, such a great find. I love fish. When an Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips arrived in the town where we lived in the 1970s, I was excited. Even the pizza place where I worked eventually had hand-battered fish & chips. The quality was similar but the batter was quite different in the kind of spices used. I went into the shopping center looking for Grocery Outlet and Dollar Tree and found Louise's Fish & Chips and was interested. There were lots of options on the menu. I asked how big the pieces of fish were. What he told me was much smaller than what I got. The price was good, but I thought it was a bit much for the small pieces, especially since I was ordering three pieces of fish. He brought to the table three long pieces of fish and below them, there were something that weren't quite chips from England, but not quite fries, either. Everything was cooked well, but the taste of the batter was a bit bland. Nothing was greasy but the batter needed some cayenne pepper or black pepper or something. The fish seemed good quality and so were the chips. The malt vinegar that he brought was good and helped a bit. I'll return to try them again. The nautical theme of the restaurant was okay. What an amazing little Fish and Chips place with a slight asian twist (I will come back to why I say that below). Family operated, no fuss, clean, completely affordable place. We got 3 piece fish and chips, two additional fried fish and fried zuchini. This was enough food for 2 adults and one child. They nicely separated portioned our order for three of us and provided extra chips so that it would be enough for all of us. Order comes with Ranch, tartar sauce and ketchup. Ranch and tartar sauce was fresh and provided in clean, squeezable bottles. Not stingy like most businesses where condiments are provided in tiny unreachable plastic cups. None of that here! You can squeeze on as much condiments as you want. Now lets talk about why I said "slight" Asian twist - the game is in the batter. Batter is well seasoned, light, airy, crispy. Much better than traditional californian dense fish and chips batter (Dont get me wrong, I love that too). But with this you really get to taste the fresh fish and not feel too heavy or greasy afterwards. The fish has these light flowery petals on the side which provides extra cruch in every bite. Ingenuity! This is a hybrid between british and asian fish and chips using best of both worlds. This fish wont get soggy, oily or dry out inside even if you take it home and reheat in air fryer or 400 F oven. I'm from New England- lobster, clam chowder, and fish and chips are staples. I am always on the hunt for great fish and chips and you can find them. Not here. I tried Louise's twice. It's easy to drive by it in the strip mall that it is located. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Perhaps fish and chips in the East Bay is different, but the fish coating was not light and airy. It was a heavier batter, on the greasy side, and the fish most likely came from the freezer. The food came out piping hot. I'm reluctant to write a less than stellar review but the dish fell flat. Glad that there are others that enjoy this dish. The chips are seasoned fries which in my opinion are a little too salty, but everything else is super good. The coleslaw has long thin cabbage strands that you can twirl with a fork, providing a perfect tart freshness to the fried items. I can also recommend the shrimp, oysters and mushrooms to add variety, but the fish is KING. It's not low calorie, but Fish Fry Friday Lent only comes once a year!! Nice coating, but WAY TOO GREASY--why I wonder --our fish did not seem the freshest, and was dry & somewhat chewy at the small end We did like the fries-not abundant, but okay, The prawns were nice, but greasy. 3.5 stars rounded up. This place feels like a small mom and pop so I really wanted to like it. My husband did a pick up order so I didn't go inside or have any interaction with the restaurant itself. FOOD - we got the 3 fish and chips combo which comes with 3 large pieces of fried fish and fries. Definitely enough for 1 person and probably enough for 2 people that don't eat a lot or if you're sharing with a child. My only complaint is that the fish itself was kind of dry and hard. My son spit it out because of the texture. It wasn't soft/flaky but instead almost hard to chew. The crust/fry was really good though, super crispy/crunchy and didn't get soggy even with a 15 minute drive home. FRIES - the fries were also very crispy/crunchy and had a similar texture to the fish batter. Definitely good, a redeeming factor. Overall, I think if you get a good piece of fish or a piece that has fat/more tender it's a good bite. Otherwise, it's disappointing. read more
