Tiny donut shop on GG Blvd/Harbor right next to School's First Credit Union. They are open 24 hrs. The variety of donuts are limited. Although, the donuts were good! I got the half dozen mixed with glazed, sugar, cinnamon, and a free chocolate cake donut. I would stick to the regular vs cake kind. Much better in taste and texture!! They have coffee and smoothies on the menu. I was more interested in the tamales. Based on the Yelp suggestions, I wanted a dab of those goodies. I have never tried tamales wrapped in banana leaves. My usual MO for evening visits to SAK is to acquire their tamales! I enjoy these so much more than the traditional tamale typically encountered. These are wrapped and steamed in banana leaves, not corn husks. The masa is not dry and starchy, but dense and moist. I always liken it to the texture of a Vietnamese Hue region dish called banh nam, which is also wrapped and steamed in banana leaves. My favorite is the pollo verde because it's spicy! As the other reviews mention, the masa to protein ratio is appropriate here. At home, I usually reheat them first and then add more habanero sauce for more kick. My boyfriend tried the jalapeño and cheese tamale last time, which resembled more of the traditional tamale. It wasn't great, but the jalapeños they chose were hot, hot, hot. Maybe it's my timing, but the donuts aren't always the freshest. I've only stopped by in the evenings, and I've found the my choices are sometimes a tad stale but not inedible. It can be overlooked because the store owner is always super friendly. On my last visit, she discounted my fritter because it had broken in two pieces, which I didn't even mind. I stumbled across this place after having a crazy craving for some tamales years ago and I have been coming here ever since. At the time, I was shocked that a donut shop would sell tamales. They are more Asian-fused and are wrapped in banana leaves. My favorite is the green sauce - the chicken is flavorful and has a kick to it. Their red sauce also has chicken but it isn't as spicy so I don't get it as often but i know many people love this one! The most plain one is the jalapeño cheese but it is still pretty tasty for no meat. Last time I checked they are about $2-$3 each but honestly even with a bigger price increase, I'd still consider buying them. They're unique! My go-to late night donut spot has been King's Donuts for as long as I can remember; however, when I stopped by tonight, they were closed until an hour later to make more donuts. I decided my donut cravings were strong enough to try a different place and ended up here at Sak Donuts and I was not disappointed! Their regular glazed donuts were amazing and soft and delicious! Never had their donuts but I think they're famous for something else. Tamales! I am not a fan of tamales but after my first sampling of Sak tamales, I've been craving them almost daily. They have the most finely ground masa I've ever had the pleasure of sampling. They do such an amazing job of preparing their tamales that they are just as good (and I mean JUST as good) when reheated later in the day. It's almost as if they were fresh. I'm not joking. Filling is shredded chicken which is tender and flavourful. Red tamales were not as spicy as the green and needed an extra kick, but the green were great and didn't need any enhancements. Banana leaf is used to wrap as opposed to corn leaf and when you reheat, if you reheat, keep them in the leaves. Re-wrap them if you have to. The result is worth the couple seconds of hassle. A great find and a definite new favourite of mine not only in regards to a new business, but also in regards to a previously avoided cuisine. Big thumbs up. read more

It smelled like a donut shop and looked like a donut shop but the sign in the corner hinted it wasn't a regular donut shopt - "Tamales Rancheros/Tamales de Pollo $2" Emerging from the commercial sized rice cooker in the kitchen were rectangular shaped tablets of banana leaf-wrapped wholesome tamales. Unlike the familiar cornhusk counterpart, Sak's tamales had a smoother masa, or cornmeal dough, with a pasty texture, similar to a firmer version of dim sum turnip cakes. The taste was savory rather than sweet, unconventional but favorable to my liking. To maintain the right consistency throughout, the filling was almost sauceless. The meat retained most of its moisture due to the thick masa envelope. Sak might have good donut or even decent coffee, but when it comes to tamales, it's the best joint around. read more

They were not overly greasy and the glazed coating was just perfect, not so thick that it flakes off and not so thin that you can't taste its sweetness. When I first walked into the shop there wasn't really any sign saying that they offered tamales except for a worn out paper tape to the wall. The tamales came out hot since she pulled it out from a crock pot. The Tamales here are alright, nothing to write home about. I think what made it stand out is that the tamales are wrapped in Banana Leafs which you don't really see often. Banana leaves create an entire different texture making it more wet vs. corn husk giving it a firmer, and dryer texture. Like the other reviews it does remind me of the Banh Gio. Sorry to burst the bubbles of those that think its some sort of Vietnamese fusion,but, it is a very common practice that in Central America and certain regions of mexico, like Oaxaca, to wrap Tamales in Banana Leaves, instead of Corn Husk. read more

I swung by late one night and asked for a tamale. The guy said "I only have red left." I said sure and bought 2 of them. He asked if I wanted them heated up and I obliged. Banana leaf was interesting. The ratio of meat to "masa" was in favor of meat. Score! Now comes time for the "masa". Is it really masa? I'm not sure. It was a very smooth firm texture (same as Banh Gio, I'm not kidding you). It wasn't crumbly at all. The chicken was a bit salty (but for some, it might be okay). Overall it is a good tamale. I'm not sure what region of what country this tamale came from, but it did remind me of a Guatamalan tamale I got from Roosevelt Tamale Parlor in Mission District of SF. 3.5 stars. read more

This is not just any donut shop. It's one of the few places to get tamales made lard free. Run by a Cambodian Muslim family, the donut shop owners were taught the art of tamale making by one of their staff. The tamales are amazing - there are two types - one is wrapped in corn husk and made with cheese and red sauce. The other is wrapped in banana leaves and is chicken and green sauce. They are both really spicy and taste not traditional, but really good. But you have to get there early to order the tamales, they go fast. They also have really good croissants - fresh and crispy. With all the hype this place received, I expected a real tamale. The kind of tamale my boyfriend's Spanish grandmother makes. Coarse masa and heavily spiced meat wrapped in corn husks that makes the mouth salivate at the mere thought. These are not those kind of tamales. The masa is extremely fine and because it is wrapped in banana leaves, it is imparted a faint green tinge. They remind me of the Vietnamese banh nam (flat, steamed rice cakes). I selected a red chicken tamale, which I found dry and tasteless. At least the portions are huge, they save you the trouble of having to go back for more. The store however, advertises donuts and not tamales. The doughnut holes tasted fine (because, really, how can you go wrong covering something fried in sugar?), but a little stale. The ham and cheese croissant was delicious and filling, but didn't wow me in any way. I love the tamales here. They are soooo good. The masa is a bit different from the regular tamale it's more moist. Kind of reminds you of the vietnamese banh with meat inside. Also cool they use the rice cooker to keep the tamales warm. They have green, red, and chili. There green tamale is very good but also very spicy so I tend to prefer eating the red one with some sriracha on it. Not a fan of the chili it barely has enough chili in it for me to taste anything. Donuts here are okay the ones I like the most is the bear claw which has apple filling inside and the boston cream with custard inside. The ham and cheese croissant is okay. The first time I came in I really wanted to try their tamales, but I was too shy to ask for one so I settled on the danish. Next day I came in got my danish (again) and got a red tamale.
