Authentic Japanese sushi place. Been around for over 25-30 years. And it's still very popular

Back in the day, when this was one of the few sushi spots in Ridgewood, it was great. Over the years, however, they haven't improved with the times and have stayed the same place, except with lower quality. The last few times I got food from here, the quality was definitely lacking. One thing I had was a tuna hand roll, but the tuna was all cartilage and basically inedible. And the last few times, I've felt ill after eating there (I kept going back for the nostalgic feel but it's not worth it anymore). I won't be going back unless they make some drastic changes. read more

Palm Sunday after mass at Mt Carmel we decided to have dinner at Sakura Bana. We know it's open until 9. We called for 7:45 reservation and was told too late! We went anyway and was greeted lukewarmly by the server who waited on us with no pleasantries hurriedly serving our orders like she is doing us a favor! We have been coming to Sakura Bana since 2005, when we first moved to Glen Rock. We have been coming regularly for the past 20 years. The food is always amazing, with anything we order, sushi/sashimi or cooked food. My son's favorite is the beef teriyaki. Mine is the sushi sashimi special. My daughter loves the hamachi Kama. If you haven't tried the Nabeyaki Udon, it's a must. I have known Ken-san and Rico, since the beginning. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail is unsurpassed. I got a few rolls to go on a Friday night. I ordered it around 6:30 and my pick up time was 850. It was a tuna, avocado roll and a shrimp tempura roll. They had curbside pick up so the woman ran it out to me, which was great because parking is a challenge. Honestly, a 10/10. Friend from Jersey recommended this spot. The sushi was fairly priced and it was so fresh! It's super authentic and the people there were so nice. I got the omakase and it did not disappoint. It's more on the traditional side though as opposed to fusion like the ones in Manhattan. My family loves to come to Sakura Bana for their Bento box lunch special. You have a couple of different choices and it comes with soup and salad. I chose the sashimi and subbed a cucumber roll for the California roll that's apart of the box. It's definitely a good portion for the price and their salad dressing is different than the normal dressing you get at most Japanese restaurants. My only complaint was the cucumber roll was a thick sliced of cucumber versus the multitude of skinny pieces they normally give. read more

I have been coming here for 24 years, and have noticed that the quality of the food has declined slowly but surely. I will never come here again. The tuna sashimi was so low quality that it had un chewable large white strings on it. The udon full of imitation crab meet and other fake seafood. Just not the same anymore. Food is good except the chef does not know how to cook meat, and an old Waitress was too defensive. If u do not serve Cooked sushi , why can' t u serve beef Medium or Medium rare? Every time I ask for medium, an old time Japanese waitress would Argue with me to say it cannot b done because the piece of meat is very thin. This is no excuse , because if u do not serve sushi well done, why can't U pay attention to cooking time of beef?. U are operating in USA, where restaurants must know how to serve beef medium or med rare? Went with the wife on Saturday evening (7:30 pm) for dinner. FYI finding parking is an ordeal and can get quite frustrating. Sakura Bana has no lot or parking place. That's ok but plan on looking around even in the garage. Sakura bana is BYOB. Had to go to Stop and Shop to pick up alcohol for my wife thereby disrupting the dinner atmosphere. Yes I should have checked in advance but still a nuisance if I have to bring things from the outside to enjoy a meal in a supposedly higher end restaurant. Ordered as follows: only sushi 4 pieces aoyagi, 2 scallops, 4 aji (horse mackerel), 4 botan ebi, 4 fluke, 4 tai (snapper), 2 chubtoro, 2 otoro, 2 salmon. $171+ tax and tip. Was this worth $200? It was ok but not great. Rice fell apart on several sushi pieces when I lifted it correctly with my fingers. That should not happen. Aji had a very fishy smell and very fishy taste unlike any I've ever had before. Scallop was good but they forgot to include it in the order and sent it out after I pointed out I did not receive it. Hmmm. Japanese are generally meticulous about checking an order before serving it especially when you're charging by the piece. These mistakes seem suspicious. Aoyagi was a bit dry. Botan ebi was good and flavorful. Fluke was dry and so was the snapper. Waitress knows little about sushi. She could not recommend anything. Friendly but not helpful. Overall quality of sushi: 5/10 Overall customer service: 5/10 Overall atmosphere: 6/10 if you like sitting 1.5 feet away from other tables you'll love it. I prefer more space so I can enjoy the food and the conversation. Overall I felt the meal was overpriced for the quality of fish received. Oh yes, plates do not come decorated with traditional seaweed or green colored plastic to bring out the colors of the sushi and no hand towels offered when you arrive. Lots of cost savings seem to be being taken. Please make this more of an upscale restaurant to match the prices you're charging. I'm here for a dining experience not cafeteria style atmosphere and food presentation. read more

One of the best authentic sushi places in New Jersey. The sushi here is amazing. The fish is fresh and you can really taste the quality here. Service is nice and attentive without being overbearing. I didn't try anything other than the sushi but looking at the other tables, the rest of the menu seemed delicious. If you can, try to sit at the sushi bar - thats the best spot to sit at where you can see the chefs making the sushi and have a conversation with them. 100% recommend this place! read more
