Such a sweet find. The store is packed with all the best parts of other discount Japanese stores in the city but in one tiny space. My cousin and I were heading back to the car after lunch and we still had 12 minutes on the meter. So I suggested we pop in for a quick look. Best decision of the day! I could prob spend a lot of time in this store. Even my cousin, who hates paying for those damn expensive meters in SF, asked me if 12 minutes was enough time. Sadly it wasn't, but it was enough time to grab a bag of mango hi-chew, chocolate pocky, vanilla panda cookies, hazelnut yan-yan, and shrimp chips. What a delightful little gem in the sunset! Sakura is a cute little Japanese store that comes stocked with a random assortment of things you may or may not need (but by god, you will spend a chunk of time looking at them anyway!). They have handy grocery items for making your own sushi and other Japanese dishes, a refrigerator full of snacks and Japanese drinks, random and delightful hats and mittens (I am the proud owner of mittens with tiger faces and a bear hat, courtesy of Sakura), cheaply-priced beauty and hair products that I'm quite curious about, etc. I could spend a long time in this little store just soaking in its little wonders. The owner is also very warm and nice and makes coming into this little store an all around wonderful experience. read more

It's like Daiso, but more friendly, cleaner, and more convenient. Who really needs 8 different types of face poufs? Sakura carries the best one, so that's pretty much that. I love that it feels like a neighborhood convenience store right out of Japan -- and it got everything I needed plus some knockoff LeSportsac bags (branded simply as Sport) -- which I didn't need right at that instant, but maybe I'd need it for my next trip? And at $13, it wasn't much of a splurge either. I'll be back! read more

Stores like this make me envy the Sunset. I live in the Richmond and although we have Super Tokio, it's not nearly as intimate as this shop. Sakura crams a pleasant variety of Japanese goodies onto their shelves, making it a delight to walk through. Sakura just opened up in my neighborhood so I figured I'd stop in. This was my first time shopping at a Japanese discount store so I didn't have any expectations. For a small store, the inventory is great. They carry everything from vacuum-seal bags and stationery to cute tupperware. This is pretty much the Japanese version of Target/Container Store except things are much cheaper. Tons of things between $1 - $1.50. I walked out with lots of plastic trays to organize my closet, some cute stationery and a soap dish. The quality may not be the best ever but this IS practically a dollar store, so I am fine taking some extra time to inspect the items! read more

I like this small little store . You easily miss this store walking or driving by . They sell a pretty good selection of Japanese snacks . They also have some school and kitchen supplies . They even have a little bit of Hello Kitty stuff ! I picked up two pairs of nice , cheap socks for flats from this store . This store is like a smaller version of Ichiban Kan . Things are a slightly pricier but I don't mind helping out a local store owner :) . read more

This is my FAVORITE place in this city!! It's a tiny cozy place, but it has almost everything I need! The store always has something on sale, so it's totally worth stopping by every time I'm in the neighborhood. Besides, the owner is awesome! Super friendly owners who happily greet you when entering and leaving. The woman who works here so cheerily greeted me that I couldn't help but reciprocate. The friendliest hi from a stranger I've ever gotten. EVER. Mostly just typical items also found at Daiso or Ichibankan. But they also have some unique items like some funky soap or handmade night lights. Thinking about it, I might just have to stop by again and impulse buy one of those cute nightlights! read more

This store is a hidden jewel in the Inner Sunset; I am deeply glad it has survived the rather significant gentrification over the past decade. Michi and her husband are extremely friendly, and this place is like a little taste of Japanese hospitality here on the West Coast of the US. Prices are excellent; I found a wonderful bowl here for $1.59!! They have an interesting variety of goods, snacks and foods, and I always feel happy after a visit. Clean, cute, friendly workers, and cheap. The place is a pretty much like DAISO except has more of that Japanese Convenient store feeling. Randomly wandered in here one night when I was meeting a friend across the street for dinner and showed up too early. I ducked in just to kill some time, but was surprised to find a seriously adorable store with cute Japanese goodies. I love the variety of merchandise here, from snacks and drinks, to plushes and apparel. The lady at the counter was exceedingly sweet and nice. She even told me that they would be getting new cat plushes in stock the following week. As you can tell by the ratings and reviews that Sakura is genuinely one of the hidden gems in the Sunset. It isn't big and it doesn't offer a huge selection of goods (mostly Japanese products) like the stores in Japantown, but it always has everything that I look for. And every time I walk by there, there's always something in the window, a little one of a kind item that catches my attention. I love this store and the owners. They are super friendly and helpful and genuinely care about the products they sell. One time I purchased some teabags here and mentioned that they aren't the ones I usually like to buy. They requested that I let them know how I like them to see if they should order more. I like how they also sell gift items made by local artists. I've purchased a lot of random necessities here: salad dressing, sticky rice, curry, tea, travel shoe case, laundry bags...there are a lot of interesting and useful things packed into this small space. read more

I love this little Japanese shop it reminds me of Japantown! They have a bunch of tasty snack, drinks and sweets. They also have plenty of gadgets you didn't realize you needed but once you see them you must have them. this tiny japanese shop is quickly becoming my favorite place to buy imported foods from japan. it's awesome not having to go all the way to japantown, take 30 min to find parking, and then pay expensive prices for food. the prices are pretty good and the place is filled with some of my favorite japanese drinks and japanese foods. i could eat a sake onigiri (salmon rice ball in seaweed) everyday. and they have the good instant ramen. none of that top ramen or cup of noodle crap. but i think the thing i love most about this shop is the store lady. she is friendly and polite and really reminds me of my stay in japan. i would definitely say that she is what makes this little store more than just another daiso or ichiban-kan. read more

I love Sakura! The owner is super friendly and always happy. It makes my day just saying hello to her. I living within walking distance so I stop by at least once a week buying school supplies, household items, candy, or just cute little knick-knacks. My last score here was a black messenger back with an owl on it for only $10. As others have mentioned, Sakura sells similar items to shops in Japantown such as Daiso but is in a way better neighborhood (Inner Sunset rocks!). read more

Heard reviews that they had matcha here so I decided to visit to see if it was true. Yes the store is small but the man behind the desk was very friendly. I found myself smiling when I saw the things that I had wanted to buy for a while. I bought some kikoman green tea soymilks (the pricing was cheaper than most stores I go to to buy this), some jasmine tea packets, a tofu miso package, and of course, my matcha. The total came up to around $20. It seems they dont charge tax. They do take card. I will come here again. There were some cute kitchenware and notebooks that I didnt buy this time but will most likely buy the next time I come here. Yay Sakura! read more

This is a great little store, and I can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet. It's similar to ichiban kan or Daiso, but smaller, so understandably, you're not going to have the same selection. Unlike these stores, while Sakura has a lot of discount goods, they have some nicer imported items as well, which understandably cost more. The owners are both super sweet, and this place has everything from Japanese groceries, to housewares, to bathrobes, to toys, etc. I've gotten myself a gorgeous red satin robe here, vegetarian miso paste, and, just yesterday, I finally broke down and joined the animal-hat trend after visiting. This place deserves all the business it can get. read more

This is the most amazing store in inner Sunset, they sell a little bit of everything, it's like a mini Japantown and is great if you're not up to commuting to Japantown, and they even sell some stuff that isn't even at Japantown! Finally made it to this place. The owner is super cheerful. Good vibe. Stock is ok, still prefer Ichiban or Daiso in JTown. 1/5 of the merchandise are packaged food, but more expensive than the other Japanese dollar shops I just mentioned. The other non-food items are a mixed bag. Nothing clever, lots of Made in China stuff. Sun hats are cute but $12 ea? Happy they have Pokka Milk Coffee in cans tho. Not in a hurry to return. read more
