My friend and I stopped by for lunch on the weekend and split a chicken katsu sandwich. The chicken was good, not greasy at all, and the bread was light and fluffy. I appreciated that the staff did not drown the sandwich in mayo and kept it to a minimum. At $19+ after tax, however, the sandwich cost 1.5 x's the average price of other, more complex sandwiches I've gotten in the city, so Bread N' Chu is definitely on the pricier side.
I sought out this Japanese sando shop even though I'm not in the Outer Richmond much. However, the lure of an authentic Japanese sando motivated my crosstown journey from SoMa. When I arrived around 3PM, there was only one customer sitting at the window counter. I was actually happy to see seating at all because previous reviews warned there was none to be found. There was quite a robust menu of choices including Tonkatsu, Chashu, Unagi & Egg, and Korokke Curry. I couldn't help but notice the price points were on the high side (e.g., Unagi & Egg was $24). However, I was hopeful when I ordered the $15 Japanese Egg Salad Sando. It was nicely packaged, but when I opened it up, something disappointed me right away. The milk bread was way too thick (Photo 9). The best Japanese egg salad sandos come assembled with much thinner slices of milk bread. That's what they prepare and sell at the konbinis in Japan, and those sandos are perfect. This was not, and the bread tasted a tad stale by 3PM. It overwhelmed the egg salad which was mixed rather bizarrely with edible flowers. I'm willing to concede the thicker bread might work better with a more substantial filling like Korokke but not with something more pliable like egg salad. It did taste better with the $14 Choux Sando with Strawberries perhaps because the fruit gave me something to bite into amid the choux cream (Photo 8). For egg salad, however, if they'd slice the bread to half the width, then I'd be happier. FOOD - 3 stars...that thick bread! That was frustrating and felt a bit disorganized. Overall, good quality food, but the price and experience don't quite match up.
Randomly stumbled upon this Japanese fruit sandwich place because a friend really likes the fruit sandwiches. The storefront isn't the most appealing, and it's honestly hard to impulse buy here because there's no line, barely any pictures, and you can't see the treats like you would most bakeries. That said, friend was determined so she bravely blind-bought the strawberry sandwich and matcha drink, which had an okay wait. The matcha drink was super super sweet - so sweet that I'm pretty sure we missed the option to reduce the sweetness which was unfortunate. She ended up tossing the drink but- The sandwiches were pretty good! The milk bread was a bit dry for me, but the Japanese "sweetness" on the cream was done well. I'd guess it's still on the pricy side even with it's pretty large size, but if you're in the area, it's nice to have this place for convenience. I don't think I'd trek all way through the City just for this, but if in the area or if trying a bunch of eateries nearby, Bread N' Chu is great to have around.
This place stole my heart. Breaded spam and soy marinated eggs on a soft toast, absolutely delicious. Highly recommend ordering ahead for a smooth grab and go experience.

Tonkatsu Sandwich- Soft, fluffy bread with that crispy pork. Overall really good tonkatsu sandwich. The bread is not too soft that it just compresses and is sticky. Nice and crispy pork and the dressing and lettuce in the sandwich helps balance it out A nice small little place that is great for takeout. There is a small nook to the side to eat there which we did. Excited to try the other sandwiches there in the future. We took muni to get there which was pretty easy. Parking in the area is limited but doable.
If you're craving a sandwich like you had on your vacation to Japan, THIS is the spot. Sadly, it will cost you a pretty penny more than you paid in Tokyo, but hey, at least you don't have to fly over an ocean to satisfy your jones. The pork sandos, chicken sandos, egg sandos, fruit sandos, all the sandos, EVERYTHING is delicious here! The coffee drinks are great too! The reasons I can't give 5 stars are because there's nowhere to sit, nowhere to park, and I blow an entire paycheck when I eat here. But wow, the food here is really really really good. Fast and friendly service too. Thank goodness I don't live near this place. It's a great spot to pick up picnic food on our way to Golden Gate Park or the Presidio.
Highly recommend for catering if you're willing to pay. The sandwiches were massive, extremely fresh (came hot), beautifully packed and labeled, and were each so delicious. Favorites were the unagi and egg as well as the special truffle sandwich. Bread is super thick and not too sweet, perfect complement to the umami-rich fillings of each sammie. Would order again!
I was looking for a small and quick lunch and decided to try Bread N' Chu. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Sandwich and it took about 15-20min to prepare. The taste was decent, but the sandwich was a little dry. I paid $17.50 which is a little steep, but it included 2 chicken katsu breasts so it was a decent portion size. It's a decent option if you're close by and want a quick meal or snack, but it's not a place I would go out of my way to visit.

I also had to get myself a drink too! I wanted to get something a bit unique, so I got the Sea Salt Coffee with Cheese Creamer. The cheese creamer gave it an extra flavor. I'd recommend this place! They have a good variety of items and Japanese sandwiches here and they sell appetizers like fries too!
This is a really cute spot with fun sandwiches if you want a break from Dutch crunch. The chicken katsu was fresh and still warm inside. The strawberry cream sandwich was also great, not too sweet and fresh fruit. The sea salt coffee was okay, but it ended up being a bit too much cream for me (personal preference). The service was polite and fast. I only docked a star because the sandwiches were a bit pricey for the size (what in SF isn't though), the place didn't have very much seating and lacked a bathroom.
Small little shop in the heart of Outer Richmond district. Very clean shop with quick service...now for the food...we were hungry so we ordered the chashu sandwich, the Spam and Egg Sandwich, the Egg Salad sandwich and last but not least we had to order the Choux with fresh strawberries. Each sandwich was made with Japanese Milk Bread...soft spongie and flavor absorbing goodness!!! Cannot go wrong with this place! Can't wait to go back and try the Katsu Sandwiches!!!

Parking around this area can be pretty difficult to find, so make sure to set aside some extra time to find parking if you're visiting. The shop itself is small and quaint, but very nicely themed and has a cozy atmosphere. We decided to order the chicken katsu sando and the egg and spam sando. Service was great, and our food came out very quickly! Upon first glance, we were surprised by how thick the sandwiches were,in a good way! There was so much filling packed into each sandwich, which made me understand the price point. The chicken katsu sando was juicy and not dry at all. The bread was soft, although it was a little crumbly. Overall, we really enjoyed the chicken sando. The egg and spam katsu was also very good, but definitely on the saltier side. The eggs were well-marinated and cooked perfectly. If you're looking to try a different sando spot, I definitely think this place is worth a try! read more
On the hunt for a lunch spot in Inner Richmond, I decided to try Bread n'Chu, which I had flagged on my "Want to Try" list for their katsu sandos. My friend and I stopped by around 1 PM on a Saturday, and there were only a couple of customers ahead of us to order. We split a chicken katsu sando, and our food took about 10 minutes to be prepared. Splitting the sandwich was the perfect size for a light lunch. One of the make-or-break it elements of a good katsu sando is the milk bread, and Bread n'Chu's milk bread was sweet and super fluffy. The chicken cutlet was thin and crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside, and each half of the sandwich had a full cutlet. Additionally, the sweet and spicy aioli added just enough "zing" without making the sandwich soggy. Nearly $20 for a sandwich made this a splurge, although everything tasted high-quality. read more
Best sando in San Francisco. If u are craving japanese 7-11 sando, u gotta come here. Its soft like japan but prettier. I mean my sando had flowers in it. Pickup and go kind of a place inside. Cute little shop near our hair salon. Egg sandwich was $15. We also had tonkatsu sandwich, it was $17.50 Will definitely be back for a good snack next time I'm in the area. We placed an order on Grubhub for pickup, and all of our sandwiches were ready when we arrived! Its a small but cute restaurant that's well decorated inside with cute little pig figures and plants by the windows. -Chicken Katsu Sandwich ($17.50): This came with a very generous amount of katsu (two pieces stacked ontop of eachother. The chicken wasn't as juicy as I would like but wasnt dry either. There was a good amount of sauce and cabbage to balance out the amount of chicken! The bread itself was very soft and fluffy. Overall, this is a pretty good chicken katsu sandwich, and I'm glad I finally came to give it a try. I likely won't go out of my way to come back, but would stop if I'm in the area and looking for a quick meal. I did try a bite of my friend's pork tonkatsu sandwich and that seemed to be more tender so I might try that next time. read more
Cute little Japanese sando shop with no seating inside, so it's more of a grab-and-go spot. The store itself is small but has a nice aesthetic. Parking is street only, which might be tricky during busy hours. The sandos were a bit bigger than I expected! We tried: - Tonkatsu - My favorite! The crispy pork chop was crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, and paired really well with the katsu sauce and kewpie mayo. - Spam & egg - A nice combo with a soft-boiled egg and spam katsu. The signature mayo added a nice touch. - Chashu - Flavorful and juicy, especially with the sweet shoyu sauce. - Egg salad - A bit bland for my taste, so I wouldn't get it again. - Choux with strawberry cream - Stuffed with lots of fresh strawberries and cream, perfectly sweet and creamy without being too heavy. Slightly pricey for what it is, but the flavors were solid and it was fun to try! read more
Super happy to be able to get Japanese sandwiches like these in the US! They are a lot bigger than what I'd see in Japan, but the variety and flavors are definitely here! They're pricey for a sandwich though, albeit a unique item that they do pretty well in. read more

We celebrated my husband's birthday over the weekend and he wanted to find a place that had Japanese sandos and Bread N' Chu popped up on Yelp. It looked good, it looked interesting, and most importantly... they had egg salad as an option. Parking in this area is a bit tough on a Saturday afternoon. We had to circle across the block a couple times before we were able to find a spot across the street. Their menu isn't extensive which is great. He opted for their egg salad sandwich (that he ranked as his top 3 since coming back from Japan!) and I got their choux sando which was currently their strawberry cream sando. Both get passing grades from us. The only thing that really hurt was the cost being over $30 for two sandos, but it's a good treat once in a while. read more
Tried their Tonkotsu sandwich the other day and it was delicious! Loved the fluffy buns on the outside and I thought the portion size was more than enough. I had leftovers for the next day. The pork was crispy and was a good contrast to the bun. Service was friendly! My friend and I ate at a nearby spot since there was no available seating inside. read more

I'm not sure what happened to my initial review, but it seems to have disappeared. I visited most recently yesterday for lunch because I was running an errand in the Richmond neighborhood and was getting hungry. I remembered that this place had pretty good sandwiches. I scored parking right in front of their store around 1PM on a Tuesday. I ran in & thankfully there was no line, so I just ordered my pork Katsu sandwich and a choux (dessert) sandwich to eat later on. Prices have increased since my last visit by about $3 per sandwich. The pork katsu sandwich was warm, featured crispy katsu with shaved lettuce, katsu sauce & another sauce on pillowy soft crustless bread. Yum! In the evening, I had half of the Choux sandwich for dessert & the subtly sweet fluffy cream & fresh strawberries with the pillowy soft bread was perfect. Although their prices have increased, I would return for these two sandwiches. There isn't much ambience as this is a takeout store with order counter. read more
I've had this place on my radar for awhile, but it being in the outer richmond I'm rarely in that area. But it was a sunny summer day and had some time on my hands. I was surprised to see how many sandwich options they had! They even have a truffle sandwich! I asked the owner what he recommended for a first timer, he said the chicken Katsu sandwich. It was crispy and juicy, I must admit before I ordered I thought it wasn't going to be filling but I was wrong. The bread is light and the flavor bomb from the chicken is awesome! Staff was friendly, the menu isn't overwhelming with options. Was just shy of $20 for one sandwich, but the flavor is so good I would definitely come back. read more
A favorite go to place for my friends and me. The bread is always sweet and soft, never disappoints. My personal favorites are the chicken katsu sandwich and the korokke sandwich, great savory sandwiches that pairs extremely well with the sweetness of the bread. The store is a fairly small space with no seating, but there are parks within walking distance that you could eat at. read more

Headed over at around 2 pm and we were able to order right away. When you walk in, they have their menu written on the chalkboard. After ordering, you can wait inside but they don't have dine in seating. Our total came out to around 50 dollars for 3 sandos which is a little pricey but their sandos are very massive. Egg Salad Sandwich - Very picturesque sando. The milk bread is super thick and fluffy. They are very generous with the filling too. The egg salad was pretty standard and had a mild egg flavor. Tonkatsu Sandwich - The filling was very large for this as well with two pieces of katsu in it. For my sando, the katsu was thin and juicy but I could have used a little more sauce. My friend said in their portion, the katsu was a little dry. Choux with Strawberry Sandwich - I liked that they used custard as the filling as it added a creamy texture to it. They use different seasonal fruits for this sandwich and the current one they had was strawberries which were super sweet. A nice place to pick up something for a picnic in the park or a quick to go lunch if you're in the area. read more

This is my friend's favorite spot to go when she wants something quick and not too heavy. We were able to find parking a block away and walked over. There's no seating inside but there's an area by the windows where you can stand and eat. It wasn't busy. A few people standing outside waiting for their food, but no line inside. I got the spam and egg sandwich, while others in my group got the egg salad, chicken Katsu, and chashu. All really good flavors! While the bread looked thick, it was very soft. Very well presented sandwiches too! Food comes out fast, but I waited a bit longer for my spam and egg sandwich. But it still wasn't a long time. They were probably cutting up a new batch of spam lol. Great place to go back to! read more
