I came into Sakura on a Friday night when it was really busy. I know that it can be very busy to the point the quality of service may go down or the cleanliness of the place is lacking. So I decided to come into Sakura with a black light since I use to use it when I was a critic. The place was very clean and the food was excellent! The management plus the staff are very detailed and delightful when taking care of their clientele. Again, the food, atmosphere and staff were amazing. Experience was OK. Not great. Not bad. Two of us dined there for sushi in the regular dining area, not hibachi. Ordered (one of each): Approx $45 with tip. Mixed green salad with ginger dressing - WAY WAY WAY overdressed. It was more like lettuce with my dressing rather than dressing with my lettuce. And the ginger dressing was more like thousand island (sweet and almost no ginger flavor or texture). Not worth $4. Couldn't even eat it. Miso Soup - Tasty. Nothing out of the ordinary. Spicy Tuna Roll - Good but could've been spicier. Small serving. Spicy Salmon Roll - Good by could've been spicier and didn't taste quite ad fresh as the tuna. Small serving. Cucumber Roll - Good, cheap filler food. Because, yes, IMO sushi is expensive. Summer Roll - Absolutely delicious. Visually appealing. Nothing needed improvement. Soy sauce server on the table was disgusting. Had drips of soy sauce from the previous day on it (we were the first to be seated at the table that day since the restaurant just opened for the day). One of the wrapped up fork and napkin sets we received had a stain on the napkin like it had been used on someone else's table and when they didn't use it, they recycled it without washing or re-wrapping in a new napkin. Good thing we were using them. Decor and atmosphere were appealing. Lighting was a little on the dark side for lunchtime meal. Would probably try another place for sushi next time. I had high hopes. As a treat I went alone and ordered Filet, shrimp, and lobster. The filet was good... but another gentleman had also ordered the filet mignon. After the chef diced them both up he portioned the servings to where the gentleman received the lion's share of steak. I thought.."Well... at least nobody else ordered lobster"... and upon receiving mine I wish I hadn't. First... they put teriyaki sauce all over it. Who does that to such a beautiful protein!?!? But to make it worse...it was WAY over cooked. I'm talking teriyaki rubber ball bad. The chef asked "is everything ok?" To the group as he sloshed more sauces in our bowls. I replied "No"... but he bowed and left. The server came around shortly after and asked the group, again, if everything was ok. Again I said no... but it took the nice gentleman beside me to get her attention. When I explained the problem she said, "oh we put teriyaki on everything". We went in on a Friday night. We sat at a booth and ordered seaweed salad which was poor to mediocre quality. I was hopeful the sushi rolls would be better and we ordered 4. They were just eh- ok but nothing I'll want to head back for. They're open until 11pm (they say) however even though our tab was over $70 and we were finishing our drinks and chatting 10:22pm the waitresses starting pressuring us to leave. Interrupting our conversation (even though we had already settled the tab) to hand her our soy suace caddy from the table and coming by every few minutes to "check on us". She ordered from the dinner items for her lunch. The wife that is. Hibachi Chicken was delic - kind of short on the veggies for a Hibachi place honestly. Sashimi Deluxe was beautifully presented. I have not seen food presentation like this in quite a few years. Almost everything on it was an edible item. Wasabi was a real eye burner - I took some to go as I'm into self mutilation and this was just the ticket. I requested NO TUNA and after being asked if I would accept 3 diff kinds of tuna the waitress got the idea correctly - I wanted NO TUNA - NO TUNA OF ANY KIND. I left a nice tip as it is NOT the wait staffs fault the menu is lacking specifics. All in all this place is on the expensive side for sure - the food did match the price though. I like this place. The decor is awesome and the food is good. Presentation is A plus. The price tag is high for dinner but it's alright for a once in a while splurge. They have $1 sushi for dine in on Tuesday's and the dollar menu includes some really good choices like White Tuna, Eel, Yellowtail etc. I usually come here for lunch and get the sashimi lunch on Tuesday's with a couple of dollar sushi's. The sushi dinner combos are NO JOKE. Seriously. Typically in a sushi combo, the sushi rolls are very minimal, with the addition of miso soup and salad. While the latter was the case here at Sakura (they had miso soup and salad included in the combo as well), "MINIMAL" it was not. They had soooooooo much sushi. My bf enjoys California rolls, therefore he ordered the California combo. It came with 24 pieces of sushi. I kid you not. Like, 24 pieces is just ridiculous. And awesome. I ordered the spicy sushi combo and got 8 pieces of California roll, 8 pieces of spicy tuna, and 8 pieces of yellowtail. In LOVE. The best part? Completely affordable. We were asked to leave at 2:30 on the dot even though we were just finishing our wine. We were "bothered" every few minutes and felt rushed from the moment we walked through the door. First I want to tell you I know nobody at this restaurant. I eat here with my family every couple months but today was my daughters birthday and she wanted to eat here. If you know me or my family you know we eat out a lot and enjoy many restaurants in Athens and Watkinsville. I read the previous negative reviews and always interested if they are true or disgruntled employees. I own a business and know how it goes. First we got there right when they opened and were greeted right away by a hostess and the bartender. We sat right down and our server Grace ( I think that's right) was very nice. We never waited on anything. The entire place was incredibly clean including the bathrooms. My son was in there a few times so I know. The chef was great and my daughter had a great birthday. She was so happy for the song and fried ice cream. She's 10 so sometimes she is hard to please. I couldn't find one thing that was wrong with this restaurant. I did see matts on the floor and all the employees looked happy to be there. As an owner you can tell by how the employees interact. I'm sure the negative reviews had their reasons but this is the best place in Athens for Japanese and will continue to get my business. read more

This place has so recently opened there wasn't even an entry for it yet. We went there for lunch this past Sunday afternoon. You can choose whether you want to sit on the Hibachi Side, where food is prepared in an entertaining way for you, or on the Sushi Side, where you just order from the menu. We chose the sushi side. With so many of these Japanese/Hibachi/Sushi places opening up all over Athens in the past year or so, I was wary that this would be yet another boring and run of the mill place. But I was really impressed. The decor and the feel of the place was great. It was super clean, very nicely decorated, and yet still had a comfortable, homey feel. The staff was super friendly and polite. I ordered the avocado salad with ginger dressing, miso soup and the Age Tofu. All of it was absolutely delicious. And, the food was an art form in itself. Everything comes out prepared in a gorgeous, artistic way. My avocado salad was a giant heart of sliced avocado with the salad in the middle. My Dad ordered the sashimi and it came out in a huge boat shaped container with shaved ice, fluorescent lights and a neat display of shells and assorted chopped vegetables to look like a treasure chest. It was really cool and creative. And all of it was absolutely delicious. The miso and the ginger dressing in particular were extremely flavorful -they can be bland at some other places. I can't wait to come back when I'm not on a low carb diet, and try some other options. They had tons of rolls and entrees, plus lots of Hibabchi options, and kids meals. A good place to take a family group with the chef putting on a show as he prepares dinner on a flat top surrounded by the hungry diners in the hibachi grill area. Food choices include steak, chicken, and seafood- served with white or fried rice, and a simple mostly-lettuce salad. The house dressing is a sweet ginger cream one, but others are available. Food gets a B, (good but not gourmet)chef gets an A for entertainment value. It's a nice place for variety in a college town full of bars. There is also a sushi area of the restaurant, which we didn't try on this specific evening. Be sure to make a reservation if you want to eat in the hibachi side. read more

Five stars - the best sushi in Athens, and comparable to what you'd get at a good sushi place in Atlanta. We went just for sushi -- sat at the bar. The service was excellent. The nigiri was very good, and the rolls were outstanding. Best of all, they had uni -- it was as fresh as it gets, and we enjoyed it enough to order more. When we asked for uni at Shokitini, the server looked at us like we were nuts. I doubt we'll go back there now that we have a better option. Prices seemed reasonable. Cost us about $90 for two people, including sake, and we weren't shy about ordering some of the more expensive items. Didn't try the entrees, so can't comment on them. But if you want quality sushi in Athens with attentive service (something else you won't find at Shokitini), we recommend this place. read more

We always use this place for our jap. dinner night since shokeys got closed. But lately we feel that the place is coming short on service gradually ...Today was worse among all. We reach by 8:45 PM. Got the table we were 5. Our order was 2 veg. 1 lobster filet mignon & shrimp & 2 chicken & steak Hibachi dinner. We had 1 saki, 1 neat glen levett & 1 black label on the rocks. When we req. chef to put some garlic on the side of grill & cook for a few, but instead he ( his pic I have upload in pics) mix it in our food. Next, my friend said to put some siracha in our rice. He said I got allergy for it so I can't put that hot sauce in, you have to take it on side. Again I told hom with action (so hope fully he understand that) please put some garlic on side of the grill & cook it... again he act like he don't understand that & mix more garlic with our food. Within a short time he wants to give us rice which was not cooked nor hot, so I said please leave it on the grill for little more & then give it to us... again he act like he didn't get it & serve it to all my friends but I refused to take it. When he serve rice to me, he almost therow it in my plate. At this point my friend got up & complaint about the bad behaviour. Unfortunately owner was absent. When we paid the bill(about 130+) the lady came from bar & said sorry & stated that the chef doesn't understand English ? Wow. We was like ... really?? I think it was may be out last supper @ this place. I'm immigrant my self, but the last thing I wants to see that some body would show bad attitude & rough service, then try to cover it up with 'I don't know English or I didn't understand you'. Nice! First, I must compliment the server. If I could remember her name, I would post it here. She was great, a bit over-prompt at the beginning but after she realized that we were staying for awhile and not in any particular hurry, she relaxed and was always available with a simple look. The food was good, the timing was the only problem. We were hoping for the rolls to arrive prior to our hibachi meal, but it was the other way around. Both tasted great, although I was hoping for a bit more texture differences with the rolls. It was reasonably priced, the location (as mentioned before) was in a strange location for such a nice place. Did well to make extra money saving on the rent for a similar place with a better/more attractive front facade. We will definitely being coming back. read more

Parking: easy, we got there at 8:30 for a late dinner. Not many people, but the place was nicely decorated, just poor location. Servers are nice. My boyfriend got something like a spicy tuna combo, but I wouldn't say it was amazing. There were 24 pieces total though. The combo came with soup and salad. I enjoyed the salad and its dressing, the soup was a bit too strong for my liking, but my boyfriend liked it. I had the fantastic roll that wasn't exactly fantastic, but okay. I can't say it'll match up to those in California, but I suppose it's the closest you can get in Athens. I would go again if I lived in Athens and was craving for sushi, but probably only after checking out other sushi places at least once. read more

I am a regular connoisseur of Habachi! I have been to many different Habachi serving restaurants in several different states, and that being said I've had some incredible Habachi and some not so satisfactory Habachi. I recently had dinner at Sakura Steak House. The inside was super nice and the waitress was truely hospitable and kind. I ordered a steak and chicken Habachi dinner and let me just say it was delightful. The serving size was large but not intimidating and the meat was cooked to perfection. The white sauce was another bonus! If you are like me and love Habachi, then you should check this place out. 10/10 read more

I ordered chirashi and it was pretty good. The sashimi was fresh, except for the salmon. I was a bit disappointed because it's my favorite. It wasn't terrible, but it did not have its usual distinct taste. The shrimp was exceptionally cook well! Most shrimp that I have had at sushi places are rubbery and taste bland, but this one was cooked just right and retained its flavor. I also loved the colorfulness of the dish, but I felt that the garnishes overpowered the sashimi. Dinner, I think, is overpriced, but I would come here again for lunch. read more

Charged extra because my daughter only wanted the broccoli out of the vegetables (extra broccoli was not given but still charged extra because she didn't want the other vegetables).
