On the way from the volcano we decided to stop for get some dinner at Sakura restaurant and grill. We had to wait for 30 minutes to be seated. We ordered a Sakura boat and a Shrimp and tempura chicken dinner. We also asked for some green tea. We had to wait for the tea for 15 minutes until I called one of the waiters and asked where our tea was. He asked me to wait a few minutes and proceeded to clean the tables until he finished cleaning a table next to us.The tea eventually arrived. Our miso soups took another 15 minutes to arrive. The miso soups were cold, I had to asked the waitress to get me a hot one. In another 15 minutes the Sakura boat arrived. As there were three of us at the table the wife of my friend did not get her food. Again, I had to call a waiter and ask him why both orders did not arrive together. He did not have an answer. The food was not good. The sashimi was substandard, the ahi Tuna was not deveined and the pieces were very small. The sushi was rather skimpy as well. I would like think that when you charge US$65 for the boat you should offer some value for the money. All in all, it was a very bad experience. At the end the waiter brought us three pieces of Tiramisu and only two teaspoons although there were three of us. A terrible service and the food that was not very tasty. Was really craving Japanese food one night in Hilo and found this place nearby our hotel. There was a bit of a wait, around 40 minutes or so, and it seems like that's pretty normal for this place because it's really the only sushi spot around. I think it was worth the wait though. My husband and I didn't order anything extravagant but everything we had was good. He had the edamame and the tempura udon. I had a miso soup along with a tuna sushi roll and tempura Okinawa sweet potato roll. I was actually really impressed with the two rolls because they were crafted really well. Everything was tightly rolled and they didn't fall apart. Both tasted delicious. It was a light dinner but very tasty and satisfying. First I want to say Sakuras is one of my favorite go to restaurants in Hilo Hubby and I love sushi and Sakuras never was a disappointment until my last visit. Went for lunch on a Monday (usually go for dinner). I ordered the Nigiri and California roll lunch special which came with miso soup. Along with the yellowtail jalepeno appetizer (one of my favs). The appetizer came and very disappointed as it tasted really fishy. This may sound weird to some but if you know what I mean You know. I didn't even try another piece as I can usually eat the whole thing myself. Then the miso soup came and again very fishy as I've never known miso soup to be fishy. Then the entree with 5 different types of nigiri. Well again 3 out of the 5 pieces tasted very fishy. The sushi roll was good. So left disappointed and won't be back anytime soon unfortunately. Thinking maybe because it was Monday they may have had some fish that was older but don't know. But on a positive note our server was great as the service here always is. So I will wait a bit and definitely not go on a Monday and maybe just stick to going for dinner. read more

One of the few Japanese restaurants that have sushi specialty rolls. It's difficult to find a restaurant that has a variety of rolls, but this happens to be one of them! It's located across of the Waiakea Kai Shopping Plaza on Kuawa Street. It is visibly seen as you drive on the Mamalahoa Hwy. Ample parking, but it can get packed during lunch/dinner hours as there are other places behind the restaurant. I've always tried their teishokus. I decided to try something else! I got their nabeyaki udon which came with shrimp tempura and an egg. The broth was delicious! It had a deep mushroom flavor filled with other vegetables. Maybe I'll experiment on making one myself! The tempura was REALLY crunchy. I left it sitting on the side for a while (type to save the best for last) and yet, it was still really crunchy! Also added a rainbow roll which the presentation did not look too amazing. I also felt the fish was skimpy. But it satisfied my sushi craving with my bowl of udon. My friends (4) got the Hawaii Boat special and omg. The presentation on it is BEAUTIFUL (peep at the pic). The food looked amazing! It came with meats, sashimi, sushi rolls, and tempura. They enjoyed it a lot! The service here was really great! Very attentive and quick even when they basically have a full house. The service is not very friendly. This is the best sushi I've had in hilo. The staff majority do not understand English, and they are not too personable. Some may say they are rude. The floors are very slippery and th space is very tight. The parking sucks on busy nights, and the place is not the best pace to park trucks or suvs. The parking spots are very small. Lastly, for the number of people there needs to be more bathroom stalls, there is only one bathroom. There is no safe exit to if ever faced with an evacuation in this place. it's very cramped. But how do you miss one of the MAIN things that go on your sushi? I ordered an Okinawa roll and a Kyoto Tempura Roll. The Okinawa roll was made correctly. It was the Kyoto Roll that was made wrong even after leaving a note online. I specifically asked them to remove the cream cheese and substitute with cucumber. There was no cucumbers AND they didn't have the spicy ahi on top that it comes with. It was pretty much rice with shrimp and avocado. Not the first time my order was wrong. When I was in Hilo for the day, I went to lunch with one of the companies I work with and they suggested lunch over here. When we got there, there was only one other party in the whole restaurant. They have a huge menu with cooked food, raw fish and much more. After looking over the menu, I decided to try their chirashi. It took a bit to get our food but it was probably because they presentation of the chirashi was so nice! For a small restaurant on the big island, you would think presentation wouldn't be a big thing but it even nicer than the chirashis I've eaten on Oahu. All the fish tasted really fresh and chirashi had great variety. I had only eaten breakfast 3 hours before that so I wasn't as hungry as I would've liked to be so I could finish the chirashi. Also, the chirashi was only $20 which was really worth it. If I ever go back again, I would want to try their salmon ikura bowl. read more

We always seem to get the Captains Boat,$64, which is perfect mix of sashimi, sushi, tempura, and charbroiled teriyaki chicken & steak for two hungry people. We always add one side salad and this time tried the fried oysters. Everything so fresh and delicious. Yes, it's a splurge for lunch but it's also our dinner. The Unagi Don was an incredible melt in your mouth experience. Broiled eel with a refreshing seaweed salad and radish accompaniment over a bed of rice. A classic dish and this was the best I've ever had. The Hamachi was also the richest most flavorful example of yellowfin. The smell from the start made me want to sit through any wait.
