SR24. Tiger Roll R28. American Roll

This is my go to sushi spot in the New Brunswick Rutgers area. The sushi always tastes great, and have a fair price. I never feel guilty ordering more than one roll, so I always get the chance to order everything I like. My favorites are the Tiger Roll and American Rolls because I'm a sucker for shrimp tempura. The location can be a little hard to find if you don't know what you are looking for. The place looks like a house and shares a space with a pizzaria. The location isn't anything fancy and there isn't much space to sit, but it is still my favorite place to get sushi in the area. Bring cash to pay for a slight discount!

This place is the definition of a hidden gem. It's a small mom and pops sushi spot that doesn't have much to offer in luxury when it comes decor and dining in but they definitely make up for it with their delicious food. I usually just get take out from them and never eat in so it was never an issue for me. They're sushi is fresh and made right in front of you during normal time (due to Covid you must order over the phone or online). They also have special offers through out the year so I would keep an eye out for that because sushi rolls can be as cheap as $2.50 a roll and special rolls around 5 dollars!! Also a smart tip for this place if you're really hungry is to check out their family trays you get a ridiculous amount of sushi for a nice price.

R4. Eel Roll WHERE IS THE EEL?!

It's over priced for the quality, it's sub par, there are better places in New Brunswick & New Jersey! & for less. This is not it for me. If you know the cuisine you'll understand what I'm about to say. It's Knock off Japanese food. Look at the sauces it's served with. It's like Chinese food. If you taste the chicken teriyaki for example, it's QUITE reminiscent of chicken & broccoli from a Chinese restaurant. One piece I had was GRISTLE... I couldn't even swallow it. Literally chewed twice and was like "no, I'll choke." In conclusion, it was Watered down, stepped on, INCORRECT! ESPECIALLY at the price point! They're masquerading around as a Japanese restaurant. It wasn't even served with chopsticks!!!!!! The audacity. The eel roll had NO Eel in it, at 6.99, I'm NOT paying for a SINGLE slice of eel surrounded by cucumber pieces. The eel is cooked nicely but to hold out like that was comical. There is NO eel in the roll. This is a NO from ME & my household will follow suit. Make your own decisions.

I have known about this place since freshmen year so it's been about three or so years. It's super close to College Avenue ( a couple minutes walk) so the location is very convenient, especially for those that go to Rutgers in New Brunswick. However, it shares a room with Daniel's Pizzeria which actually has a sign outside so finding this place for the first time can be tricky. Also, because of the shared space, seating is very limited since there's barely enough seats for one vendor as it is. This is the place to go for sushi on a college budget since all of their sushi rolls are always half off (even the specialty ones). I usually order the eel rolls and the shrimp tempura rolls since I do not eat raw fish. I also got the gyoza this time which turned out to be decent. However, if you want authentic sushi, do not come here. The rice they use for their sushi tastes like it's not season or not seasoned right. The service itself pretty fast and the two guys who work there seem friendly. TIPS: They charge an extra dollar for card usage so bring cash if you can. Also, if you spend over $11.00 in cash, they give you a free can of soda or water. If you spend over $22.00 in cash, they give you a free Snapple or miso soup. And for over $33.00 in cash, they offer a free seaweed salad, edamame, or mochi!

Aged Tofu: $3.99 There was 6 pieces in total. I ate two pieces before taking the photo. Just tempura battered tofu.. plain and not good.

I don't usually post bad reviews but when I do it's because I feel like people should know about the quality of the restaurant. I ordered: 1 Dragon Roll 1 Rainbow Roll 1 Spicy Crispy Kani (crab) 1 Age tofu They all came in styrofoam boxes which was weird to me because most restaurants use the plastic black containers with the clear top. Some items didn't come exactly as it was described in the menu. Dragon Roll: was supposed to come with eel slices on top but there was only eel inside and avocado on top. There was no sesame garnish either. Rainbow roll: came with everything in the menu except the flying fish roe which was the whole reason I chose that Roll in the first place. Also, it was topped with half of it avocado and imitation crab, and the other half the assorted fish. In the menu there is a picture of the rainbow roll and it was wrapped completely with assorted fish only. I feel a little cheated from this. Spicy Crispy Kani: this was the only one that came exactly like it was mentioned. But it was the first time having it and it is very plain wouldn't recommend. Aged tofu: this one also came as it was mentioned in the description of the item in the menu but it looked completely different from the picture in the menu. I would only get this sushi if you just want some really cheap sushi. The price is cheap compared to other sushi places but if I were going to order cheap sushi that was also decent quality I'll just get it from my usual spot at Domoko Sushi Ramen.

I ordered delivery through Uber Eats and everything was good! In the special instructions for one of my sushi rolls I asked "Add cream cheese if I can please", and they did it for me. It was also only 30 minutes from the time I placed my order until the driver arrived (on a Saturday night, but I'm only a mile away). My items are pictured and labeled below. It came with two soy sauce, and I also ordered 1 eel sauce and 1 spicy Mayo (orangish cup). They have many speciality rolls on the menu and I would recommend giving these guys a try!

A great place for a quick bite! Been coming here for the past 4 years. Now I live a few blocks away from Sakura and it's so easy to pick up food from here. FOOD: Everything is fresh and well-prepared. I love their rainbow rolls, spider rolls, and mochi ice cream. Rolls are affordable/perpetually half-off. They also have a ton of summer specials that are hard to resist. It's always so hard to decide because of all the variety! SERVICE: Bring cash! You get charged a $1 convenience fee if you use card. I typically see two men who work here and they're very nice and easygoing. Bathroom is well-maintained. AMBIANCE: The restaurant shares a space with Daniel's Pizza, and has very limited seating. You come here for the food, not the ambiance. I typically take the food to-go since I normally can't grab a spot. I'd be much more comfortable eating elsewhere anyway.

Rutgers has a lot of hysterical concepts that are unique to us. This restaurant is one of my favorites-- a sushi place and a pizza place all in one small location. Absolutely mind boggling but somehow makes sense. Confusing to me how I can somehow crave pizza and sushi at the same exact moment. Eating spicy tuna while also drooling over a Sicilian slice. Nothing about this has any explanation and that is what I love most about this experience. Love the classic New Brunswick decor of chairs that don't match and tables that are slightly wobbly in a way that can never be fixed. The sushi was delicious and cheap so that's all I can ask for. Overall if you want an authentic Rutgers experience meaning something confusing with absolutely no reason behind it you should eat here. You're welcome

From front to back, eel avocado, shrimp tempura, salmon tempura, crunchy tuna roll, Philadelphia roll with scallion, cali roll.

I give Sakura 4 stars for the price and amount rather than quality. This place is good for the cheap price and quick sushi fix, as someone else said. As an avid sushi lover, I'm not a fan of their quality but for the super cheap price and big pieces, I can't really complain. I like the eel avocado, salmon tempura, and crunchy tuna rolls. The crunchy salmon rolls are the least fresh, in my opinion, so I opt for the crunchy tuna roll. Make sure you order extra ginger and wasabi if you like using a good amount because they give very little. The staff is super friendly and the owner (it seems like) is always very polite as well. This place is super small and easy to miss, so pay attention if you're trying to find this place! P.S. I am NOT fond of the pizzeria attached to Sakura. It's super expensive for a slice and tastes really cheap.

awesome, sweet potato, new zealand, shrimp tempura rolls (not pictured: delicious salmon tempura roll)

Solid go-to sushi place for anyone in the New Brunswick/Edison. As an avid sushi eater I've been to all the staple cheap sushi restaurants in central Jersey, and this is probably the best. Take note, it's hard to find. Look for Daniel's Pizza near the St. Peter's Children's Hospital. For some reason Sakura doesn't have a sign, but it shares the same place as Daniel's. Walk in and you'll see 2 counters--one for each restaurant. There's a counter to eat at and 2 small tables. Definitely meant for a quick stop-by eat, but I kind of like how casual it is. Clean and neat enough. I went with a friend and we split 5 rolls between us: awesome roll, sweet potato, new zealand, shrimp tempura, salmon tempura. All for only $21 because rolls are always half-off. That's a crazy value! (Note: The menu is expansive with lots and lots of different rolls + classic japanese foods, like udon and tempura and teriyaki. Only the rolls are half-off but other food is pretty cheap anyway.) There were 2 men working, and they had all of our rolls ready within 10 minutes. They were very hygienic when handling the food. The rolls were all very good! Okay, it's not going to beat your fancy $20-per-roll sushi restaurant, but it's way better than I expected for $3-7 rolls. Ingredients were fresh and although the rolls look small at first they're actually not. My favorite was the salmon tempura...salmon was so tender and it was hot from being cooked (I know hot sushi is weird but I loved it). The shrimp tempura was also good, and every other roll we had. I can't wait to come back. This is definitely my new go-to place in central Jersey for a quick, reliable sushi fix.

Ordered Avocado salmon roll & Tempura Shrimp dinner. I didn't like how any of it tasted. Maybe I should have tried something else based on the reviews here.

Eel roll, Philadelphia roll, and spicy salmon roll
    Valerie L.

Cheap sushi, that's all I can say. The rolls are actually pretty decent for what you pay. I ordered a spicy salmon, Philadelphia roll and an eel roll and they were all really good! I knocked off a star for two reasons: 1. The spicy mayo literally tasted like it was JUST mayo.. I wasn't into that. I would much rather make my own at home at that point.. I don't mind paying 50 cents for it on the side, but the proportion is all wrong. Maybe it was a bad night? 2. For a college town, I'm surprised there isn't an online order option.. I would order from here a lot more if I could use Yelp Eat 24 or Grubhub for the convenience factor.

... my FOUR DOLLAR "kani salad" with only one of the promised ingredients.

I ordered the Judy Roll, spicy salmon, spicy crab, and the Crazy Tuna Roll. The Judy Roll was really good, and the Crazy Tuna Roll ended up being my favorite of the night. The spicy crab was decent, but I personally felt it had a little too much crab mixed in. Overall, the sushi tasted fresh, and the restaurant itself was clean and inviting. I honestly expected the place to be much busier because the atmosphere and food were solid. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area!

So when a friend chose Sushi O for her birthday outing I was less than excited, I was told they had hibachi style chicken and steak so that softened the blow. Sushi O is conveniently located off of route 1 in a medium size plaza with a good amount of parking. When you walk in, the soothing dim lights with the soft purple icicle lights is such a vibe, great for a date night. The music also has a soothing quality that almost puts you in a calming trance. The restaurant is well kept and clean. Let me tell you, the servers? Top notch. We were helped by a man when we first came in, and later a woman. Both were incredibly pleasant, attentive, and did not rush us at all. We were there from just before 6 until after 8... a record for our after work crowd!! I also left my favorite sunglasses behind which would have been so upsetting, but our female server ran out to make sure I did not leave without them, I was so appreciative. Last but certainly not least- the FOOD! So remember, I'm a sushi hater? No longer! They had a fantastic peanut and avocado roll that I ordered with soy paper instead of seaweed (I really don't like the taste of the sea) paired with the soy sauce it was a nice amalgamation of flavor and texture, I thoroughly enjoyed it. We also ordered pan fried gyoza and edamame for the table both extremely well executed. A friend said the gyoza was melt in your mouth quality and I felt that was quite accurate. I tried my friend's sweet potato roll which did have seaweed wrap on it but I actually really liked that too! For my meal I got hibachi steak. It was a generous portion and very tasty. I'm not big on mushrooms but I even gobbled those up- so good! With the hibachi meals you get plenty of food- salad, miso soup, your choice of hibachi style protein, hibachi mixed vegetables & hibachi rice. I had such a great experience at Sushi O, I will definitely be back. They have officially converted me!

They were running late since the whole front was full of people not seated. We ordered within 10-15 mins, however were told that they were out of a Mother's Day special and bread. BREAD! The excuse from a manager was that they ordered fresh bread from a vendor. What I gathered is that they did not take a look at their reservations, and decided not to order more to accommodate everyone. Mind you, it was only 7pm. The people behind us had been complaining of not getting their food, which should've been a signal. All around us, no one was getting their food, and the food coming out of the kitchen was sparse. Pretty sure they overloaded the kitchen staff, and the waiters took the heat because all I heard/saw was them apologizing for the long wait. If you ordered drinks or raw seafood, you got that ok. Otherwise, you would be SOL. We did not get any food until 8:20!!! And that includes our appetizers. Our entrees came out about 10-15 mins later because our waiter put in everything so there was no downtime. This included hungry children, which was just basically Mac and cheese, which we needed to be reheated cause it was so watery. All we got from the manager was a sorry. Even after we told them that this was bad managing of food service, number of reservations, etc. They did not offer any discount for the wait of our reservation or food. No 'hey', here's a complimentary dessert. Nothing but "sorry". Seems like a money grab that night. After spending $500-$600 on a very lackluster meal, which I feel many patrons that night felt, I would highly suggest spending your money elsewhere.
