We were in Mississippi visiting relatives, and someone suggested dinner at Sal and Phil's - not a place I'd ever heard of before. Wow was it good! I had great fried fish, hush-puppies, French fries, and fried shrimp (I was trying the "fried" stuff this evening). We had a big group of ten, including two toddlers, who ransacked everything as toddlers naturally do, some of our party were elderly, another was legally blind, and while we were there a huge thunderstorm arrived with heavy rain and close-lightning and cut the power off/on several times. Despite the circumstances, the service was friendly, the server stuck with us and brought everything we asked for, and the food was hot, fresh, and fantastic! I tried some of other people's dinners like Royal Red Shrimp, and the stuffed flounder - all excellent. The salad bar was small but had everything I would want. I was told the full bar was a recent addition but it was well-stocked and the server was knowledgeable. The only possible comment is that the floor became slippery after it got wet (from the thunderstorm).... If you're in this area, I highly recommend this restaurant!! read more

Terrible service. Upon first walking in, the restaurant was split awkwardly into a half bar, half large room space. Had to go to the takeout counter to find people who proceeded to ignore me until I said something. Was told to "sit anywhere". Took waitress 15 minutes to get to us and asked my order like I was annoying her. Table next to us was greeted friendly. The water was tap with ice. Asked for mayo with my order and the waitress forgot. Had to flag down the lady at the bar who smiled and said she would get it, but walked to the direction of the bathrooms. When the waitress finally did come back, she rolled her eyes when I asked for it. The poboy and hush puppies were good, but the cobbler was gummy and cold after the lady at the bar (we'll call her waitress 2) specifically said that the cobbler was being made fresh. By this time the two tables who came after us had gone. Had to get waitress two to give us our desserts and our checks. Had to flag down waitress 1 again to actually get us change. Waitress one didn't know whose check was whose. Never going back again. It's a shame, because it was good four years ago. They changed, but not for the better. read more

We had a party of 8 for Sunday lunch. We had to wait an unusual length of time for our food. All the fries (with three of the meals) were cold. The fried catfish and one order of shrimp were cold. After bringing this to the attention of our waiter, there was no contact from management. Also had to wait a long time for our check. My co-workers and I found this place by accident. We were originally going to the restaurant next door, but we weren't dressed for it (white table cloths). I saw the sign that said 'boiled crawfish' and that was it! I love this place! Every time I am in town for work, I will go out of my way to come here and I am not alone. When my co-workers came back into town again a month later, we hit this place at least 3 nights. The crawfish are spicy and amazing, the raw oysters are so fresh and clean, the hushpuppies are tasty and not greasy. This place converted a guy into an oyster loving/crawfish eating machine after the first time he every tried either!! In fact, one of my co-workers got a fried platter, and it was all great...not greasy or heavy for fried food. The staff is friendly and great, and we have never had bad service. Just went back again tonight, and I repeat...LOVE THIS PLACE!! read more

Frankly, in the decade that I've been eating here at least twice a year, the place has gone down. Physically, it's just unclean. The food is not of the same high quality as it was before. I always enjoyed the po-boys, but I've had a couple that just didn't meet my standard---too greasy, not dressed when I ordered dressed. My Review on Sal and Phil's is based on How good the Food really was and how wonderful The Employees are. So let's start with the Food. First off if Crayfish season is in I would Highly recommend that you try a Crayfish Boat! It comes with 2 Potatoes and One piece of Corn. It is to die for!!! You should definitely give the Grilled Shrimp Po'boy sandwich a try!! Save the absolute best for last!! A whole Order of Dungeness Crab Legs they are so juicy and Remarkable!!! I would Highly suggest one of these three menu options. As for the Employees they are very Respectful and very polite my Server was a young woman by the name of Haley. I say the management should give this girl a raise. She is a hard worker and she checked on us regularly. She was very polite with us and the table next to us. Good job hiring that one!!! However there is one upgrade that the establishment needs. The Chicken Tenders are not very good in my opinion. Theyhad a very Bland taste and are much like the cheap ones that you buy out of a supermarket I think Sal and Phil's should definitely change that up but other than that. Went to Sal and Phil's tonight (5.26.15). Wife wanted shrimp. Well, we got shrimp. Two orders of the 18 large. Sadly, the shrimp was apparently left over from Memorial Day weekend. Could smell the fishy smell from across the room. Texture was soft and mealy. Wasted time and money. Even though they were quite busy, they won't have to worry about me spending my money with them any time soon, if ever again. Tonight's shrimp sucked. Plain and simple. read more

Terrible service very slow and the waiter did not know the menu. Will never come back! The waiter did not check on us at all. Never refilled our drinks. We waited a hour for the food. This is a great seafood house in the New Orleans tradition. The food is always fresh and flavorful. I go here to eat every time I travel to the Jackson area. Loved Sal and Phil's. Weren't expecting a lot and it is now one of my favorite restaurants. Fantastic selection. We had oysters raw and charbroiled, shrimp, kings platter, crab, craw-fish, and several other items. Great beer selection on draft. Can't say enough about this place. Knocked Pappadeux's off as my go to place. The only problem is it is 6 hours from Dallas. Will make it a point to go again next time I'm traveling through. read more

Crayfish boot was very good: spicy and satisfying. Beer selection was also very nice. The other meals we had looked equally yummy and portions were sizeable. We have tried many dishes and loved them all! The fried crab claws are to die for! We order them every time we go in. My favorite meal is the sloppy roast beef po-boy. It's just what it says it is! We haven't found anything on the menu so far that we haven't liked. It's a relaxed atmosphere, great for kids and adults. You are treated like family and the wait staff are very attentive. Sadly I can't rate this business LOWER than 1 star. Being a Louisiana Chef, I am well versed in culinary arts. These crab cakes come Frozen in a package & were Overcooked when served, with a "special" sauce, with the cakes having a Rancid aftertaste. The BBQ shrimp here is NOT the True original southern recipe. Rather than using butter, margarine & oils are used along with so much salt the plate Cannot be finished nor enjoyed. The shrimp are Shelled & butterflied then cooked & served in a sauce that mixes like oil and water. Since the shrimp are Cooked shelled & butterflied, they are Very rubbery & not a nice note on the taste buds. As advertised, "fresh Gambino bread came with this BBQ shrimp plate, yet after Repeated requests, no bread was served. After consuming only 3 of the 8 shrimp served, I felt as I had tongued a salt-lick. The food is pretty good, but the service is TERRIBLE. Seafood is always fresh and well prepared. Salad bar is hardly worth the effort. The wait staff appears untrained and unorganized. You come in and may get quick service or wait. And wait. And wait. And wait while staff bustles right past you. We've had to go to the service window to get our check. Have eaten here many times. Owner is from Metairie, LA--so it's real Cajun food. Crawfish, Dungeness crab, shrimp po'boy, seafood platter, and crab claws are what I usually get and it's always good. Love the bar expansion! One of my favorite bartenders ever, Desiree, works there now. It's worth dropping by for happy hour just to visit her :). Never met anyone that ate here and didn't like it.
