Mediocre job by a difficult contractor. I've postponed writing the review for 8 months because I really did not to think about the experience, but every time I see the work I get annoyed. We should have gone with our first instincts. When we met Rocky, he seemed knowledgeable. However, as my co-owner said, he was mansplaining, so a bit arrogant. His price was higher than most quotes we received, but because he seemed knowledgeable and had so many 5 star reviews we decided to go with him. He was difficult to work with from the start. We had to rip up part of our sidewalk to replace the sewer line. Because there were numerous cracks, we decided to replace the entire sidewalk and driveway. He worked out a schedule with our plumber. I won't get into the details, but Rocky was so abusive with our plumber, that the plumber hung up on Rocky. Rocky was screaming at the plumber on the phone. Another time, Rocky drove to the site and was beeping his horn and yelling so much, that the neighbor came out to see what was going on. Rocky was abusive to his workers, yelling at them. He was dismissive and bullying towards us. His contact called for payment in full upon completion of the work (clean-up of the site). On the first day, he asked for payment of 40%, which we gave him, even though that's not what his contract stated. He also charged for a "change order". We did not change anything about the job. He did not discuss any change while the work as performed. Before he completed the job, he asked for payment of the balance. We told him we'd pay when the job was completed. He got angry over that. When he came for the final visit, we questioned him about the change order. He got irate, yelling and cursing. We just wanted an explanation about the "change" order, but there was no having a conversation with him. He walked away. He assumed he could just bully us into paying. We did pay the extra $500 just because we wanted to be done with him. I've worked with many contractors over 35 years, I've remodeled 5 properties, and Rocky was the most unpleasant person to deal with. On top of all this, the work is mediocre. There was discoloration in the cement on day one, which never went away. The contraction lines in the cement were sloppy. Within a few days cracks started. Over the next few weeks and months more and more cracks appeared. There are many cracks, one 12 feet long. When I questioned Rocky about this, all he would say is that concrete is hard to work with. There are other new cement jobs in our neighborhood that do not have any of these problems. They still look good years later. Below average work with an abusive contractor. As a Realtor in San Francisco, I am very selective in the vendors I recommend, as I feel their service is a reflection on me. Rocky is a fearless conqueror of the dreaded White Dots! Yes, we walked out our front door a few months ago to find that the Street Fairy had come by in the night to paint white dots on all the squares of pavement in front of our house that were cracked or worn down and needed to be replaced. Now don't get me started on how sucky it is to have to pay to repair property that you technically don't own, but I think that goes without saying. The only thing more sucky would be working with a contractor on the repairs who was unpleasant or did a bad job. Fortunately for us, we found Rocky DeGuarda and that was not the case at all. He came to us via glowing recommendations from trusted sources and everyone was right, Rocky is amazing. He's professional , courteous, on time, and crystal clear in his communication. He's also super smart (hello MBA), but don't let it fool you into thinking he'll charge more or your job is too small. Rocky is approachable right down to his pricing. We shopped around and he was very competitive - and in the end, worth every penny. The level of care and detail he and his team took to do the job right knocked our socks off. Some contractors drop off their team in the morning and come back at the end of the day. He stayed the whole time to make sure the job was done right. He even took time to talk to my construction obsessed 5-year old son and explain the repairs. Now, not only does the sidewalk look amazing, but he also kindly repaired a crumbling curb on our driveway for free. So, not much more to add that hasn't been said. In fact, I could copy/paste one of the other reviews and it would work for ours, but since the trouble back in 5th grade, I have been very wary of the perils of plagiarism. My mom does not need to be traveling to the Yelp offices in her 60s any more than she needed that trip to Burnet Elementary School back in 1974. Rocky was responsive from the start, very professional but also personable - qualities that I'm certain are hallmarks of most successful businesspeople. When you talk to Rocky about the project you're facing, it feels like you're talking to a good friend who just happens to know a lot about concrete work and you know his company will do a great job. And you also feel pretty securely that if there's something you aren't happy with, he'll be working with you to make sure it's taken care of. Short story: We recently got white dots on our sidewalk in the recent City sweep - I guess every couple hundred bucks for sidewalk permitting gets San Francisco's budget that much closer to not bankrupt. Rocky's quote for the work was right down the middle of the other two contractors. We needed about ten squares either replaced due to cracks and shifts, or removed for a larger tree basin. In addition, there were squares tagged on both adjacent neighbors' sidewalks, and Rocky very kindly created quotes for them and generously offered each of us a discount based on how many of us would contract with him. For us, one neighbor using Rocky as well resulted in about 15% savings for us. DeGuarda Concrete's crew managed the entire job while we were out of town over Christmas week. The front of the house looks great now with the newly repaired sidewalk. Rocky's price was so fair, we even decided to repair several squares of driveway that were out of the public walk area and not tagged. If you've had any work done on your house - from painting, to drywalling, to plumbing, etc. you know that when they say they are going to start the job at 9 you have to add at least couple of hours to that estimate. I had the unique (I think) situation of needing sidewalk and driveway repair completed the same week I called Rocky. I found him on Yelp and the other reviewer gave him such great feedback, he was the first that I called. Here's how it went: 1. I left a message on his cell phone - he called back within 15 minutes 2. I asked for a quote - he came over within a 1/2 hour 3. He left and called back with the quote a few hours later - the quote was higher than our budget allowed so; 4. He came back over to help figure out how we could meet most of our needs for that budget 5. He changed his schedule around to meet our immediate need for concrete work (the Thursday before a holiday weekend, no less). 6. He came the same night (!) to start the cuts (my neighbors were really jerky to him because of the loud noise and he still kept his cool). 7. His crew came over the next day 8. Even though Rocky initially calculated 3 days for the work, they were finished wihin 2 days! (Despite a heatwave.) Furthermore, he's green! The only concrete thing to start was that we had no idea of anything concrete. We interviewed a few contractor's and Rocky DeGuarda BY FAR stood out to us for his integrity and his commitment to giving us the vision we wanted. We chose Exposed Aggregate which is a process where cement is poured, then a layer of smooth small rocks is laid down, than another thin layer of concrete is added which is power-washed off, exposing the rocks. My wife and I recently decided to redo our basement floor. The existing concrete floor was the barest step-up from rat-proofing, and was literally disintegrating before our eyes. The first time we talked to Rocky, we knew we wanted him to do the work. Not only was he obviously very knowledgeable about the technical aspects of his job, but his dedication to quality craftsmanship was immediately apparent. Finding someone who's truly committed to all aspects of a craft is rare, but Rocky was passionate. Once we brought him on board, we were impressed with is his very quick assessment of the situation at hand, and suggestions he made that went far beyond what we had imagined possible - which is part of the reason you hire experienced people, right? The grading on the driveway was also so steep that it was bottoming out our car. Obviously it had to go. We called three contractors, but Rocky really seemed to know what he was doing. Over the years some sizable cracks and buckling had developed. We were undecided whether to repair or replace the patio. Rocky suggested to cut out the center of our patio and use the old bricks as edging and support for the new concrete. They excavated about 90% of the old concrete patio, extended some of the brick edging and preserved access to the drainage trap for the building.
