Mike and his team are the absolute best! The city hit me with a notice that we needed to repave our sidewalks out front due to cracking and various holes being present. They only gave us a month to get it done, so I was honestly in a panic at the time. I called Mike Heavey and he came to take a look at the scope of work that same day which was a huge relief. I gave him the papers that the city gave to me and he took care of it from there. He filed all the necessary paperwork with the city and re-did the sidewalks for me in a timely manner. They are as smooth as ever. Also, I had mentioned to him that sometimes when it rains heavily, water can sneak into the back of our warehouse door due to the inconvenient slope of the pavement. We just bought a house in the Outer Richmond. It's a bit of a fixer upper. Our backyard had retaining walls that were decades old and crumbling. We contacted Mike, he came out gave us a fair estimate. We hired him and his company to tear out the old retaining walls, and replace it, install some steal support beams to brace the back retaining wall. He also re did put patio and installed several drains throughout the back yard. His workers were always on time, polite, and worked hard. Their craftsmanship was outstanding and everyone was a real pleasure to work with. Mike personally came to our house to meet with us and had his office forward an estimate. After the late October heavy rain storms we found that water was leaking from the yard and side of the house into the garage. There was also accumulated mud close to the side panels of the house (this was a known disclosure when we purchased the house). My realtor recommended Michael Heavey Construction to help with a drainage solution. I spoke with Michael Heavey over the phone and he came to visit and assess the issue. After speaking with Mike and getting a quote I decided to go with his company. Once he got the ok Mike and and his team got to work quick before it rained again and there was more leaking. The soil around my house has high clay content, so the soil was excavated, and base rock was added and compacted. French drains were installed and drainage from the gutters was moved from the surface to pipes underground. The foundation was covered in muridrain and a steel reinforced swale with curb was built to drain surface water. It rained after Mike and his team installed the underground drainage and the garage stayed dry. In addition to installing drainage around the house a ripraff was built below where the pipes discharged the water on the hillside of my property to reduce erosion of the hillside. I think the ripraff looks cool and fits with the hillside and looks aesthetically pleasing. We also wanted a fence installed in the back yard for safety since we have a young kid. I wanted horizontal boards and even though our property is on an incline, Mike did a good job building that type of fence in a staggered manner with a built in gate and steps to the hillside. I am not worried about water leaking into my garage this rainy season and I am happy with the craftsmanship of Mike's construction team. I would recommend them to friends and mentioned to Mike that I would like to use them again in future construction projects because they got the job done in a reasonable time. read more

WOW! We just had our front walkway replaced by Michael Heavey Construction. They did a excellent job. The crew showed up every morning at 7:30 as we agreed and Michael was on site everyday. Michael and his crew offered suggestions on how to make the job better and we went with them. We chose Michael's company over 2 others. If I can give Michael and his crew 100 stars, I would! Our driveway needed a major facelift after a partial sewer and waterline replacement due to our renovation. The spots where the sewer and water lines were replaced did not match our existing concrete design and stood out like a sore thumb. The driveway looked dirty and ugly with excess concrete splattered everywhere. After seeing Michael's work from two of our neighbors front yards on the same street, we contacted Michael to see if he can fix our driveway without redoing the entire concrete. He thoroughly explained what needed to be done and promised that once they're done with our driveway, we would love it....and WE DID! We had to go darker color for the new stain so it would cover the existing red/orangey stain. Now it matches our house's exterior colors. Michaels' company does phenomenal work and came up with creative ways to get us the backyard of our dreams. We have a very classic Sunset backyard which consists of sand and slopes towards the house. I have horrible allergies and could never spend time outside so we wanted to cement in 70% of the yard and make it more usable for our little family. Concrete stamping was my initial idea however, on our first consultation with Michael he highly encouraged us to consider pavers as concrete will crack due to the sand base. While the cost of pavers is more, we wouldn't be dealing with cracking of the cement. We opted for the pavers after lots and lots of talks between my husband and myself. Let me tell you, they look fantastic! We get compliments from our neighbors and visitors all the time on how beautiful our yard is now!!!! The overall project took about 2 weeks. The first week was excavating all the sand out of the yard, lots and lots and lots of work for the guys. The next week was preparing for the pavers to come in, creating new drainage due to the slope of the yard and of course building a retaining wall because of that same slope. The end result is truly stunning and we are now spending so much time outside and enjoying this new beautiful space. Working with neighbors on a budget and contractor for both a 25ft long retaining wall and a fence can turn your hair gray (if it isn't already). Don't get me wrong, I love my neighbors, but this was a 4 year ordeal. Concrete, wood, concrete, wood. Mike (and others) gave me a bid 4 years ago, but the project got put on hold. I reached out to Mike again and got other bids in 2021. WARNING all the other contractors did NOT have workman's comp and were NOT bonded and insured. And yes, they were less expensive. That said, I'm not gonna have workers transporting huge heavy lumber through my garage and working in my yard without the company carrying workman's comp and being insured. I'm not up for a lawsuit if something bad happened. So....we went with Mike. There were some glitches that took place - a little stressful at times with the neighbors, but Mike's work team were great. I've worked with a LOT (and I mean a LOT) of contractors over the years and let me say, Mike Heavey and team is the best of the best. We needed a large cinder block retaining wall replaced at our rental house. The day after I put in a request via Yelp he was on site drafting up a proposal. In an industry where in my experience customers (especially women) are often talked to in a condescending way, Mike was very personable and spoke with me directly even though my husband (who works in construction) was present. He accommodated our requests in terms of design and materials--I didn't feel he was "upselling" like so many contractors do. Work started about a week after my initial contact--they would have begun sooner but I needed to give my tenants enough notice. The project was estimated to take 10 days, but Mike put everyone in his crew on the job in order to minimize disruption for our tenants. As a result they completed the project in 4 days. 4 days, people!! Mike's office staff was quick to communicate and send the bid. Onsite, his crew was efficient, clean, and organized. Michael Heavey was recommended to me by word of mouth. I really needed a lot of work in my back yard to the point where I couldn't see the bordering fences! The weeds took over and Invited rodents and thorny vines to take over the yard and almost claiming my home! I called Michael for an estimate and he immediately came over and gave me an estimate which not included cleaning the massive thorn bush but also cleaning the junk under my home storage. It took a lot of trucks and hard work to get it cleared but it all was cleared in two days! Later on he changed my fences one by one. He actually made it better by leveling all the sides and Pouring concrete to stabilize the fences and leveled them. I also had a roof shed that was about to collapse and I wasn't aware of the rotting wood that would have made it collapse! He was very observant and offered a solution to strengthen and salvage the overhang. We discussed placing a granite counter and that was done too! I am not a garden person so I choose to have pavers with the sides of the yard open for foliage. Due to the pending rain, he had his guys expedite the project on point . It was remarkably beautiful. Later on, there was a pause in the work due to rain, vacation and so on. It was ok though because it helped to trouble shoot what would happen with the open space of dirt! Well, long story short, weeds that took over my yard grew out again and were crawling across my pavers and I knew from there on out that I am not at all a gardener nor possess a green thumb! The decision was to put gravel surrounding the yard where there was dirt. Problem solved! (The Story of my Stamped Concrete Project) This all started when I decided to give up on my front lawn, which just wasn't working for me. I live in the Lake Merced area, and all of the front landscaping is pretty much all the same - rectangular shaped lawns. I dreamt up more organic design and showed it to a few contractors. I mentioned my specific needs to each of them, and the prices were all over the place. The approach was also different from one to another. One of my primary concerns was cracking, since I use my driveway a lot to work on cars. A different contractor came back with a good price, but insisted that rebar and compacted aggregate was not necessary? Then I stumbled upon Mike Heavey. Made an appointment, and he showed up on time and listened to what I was looking for. He provided brochures of stamped concrete patterns and color charts. He offered helpful suggestions and reassurances that he was going to do the job right. High strength concrete, rebar, compacted base, expansion joints, buried conduit for water and lighting, sealer, etc... Music to my ears. Mike was able to give me an estimate on the spot, and followed up with a written quote with the scope of work. His pricing is competitive and fair. Worth noting: After our initial meeting, he even took the extra step to come back and drop off some stone samples. Nice. Obvious, I decided to go with Mike. I called and left a message with a live person on 11.12.19. I was told that it would take a week to call me back, which should have been my first clue. I called a week later, 11.20.19, and was told that I wasn't even entered into the system. Then I was told that I need to take pictures and send them to Michael, and if he deemed me worthy, that he would reach out to me- really? Michael Heavey Construction replaced my total sidewalk (710 square feet) on a corner (two street frontage) property. The job was done quickly, cleanly and unbelievably quietly by his large, capable, and friendly crew. Mike personally oversaw the total operation. I couldn't be more pleased. I obtained a number of estimates and chose Heavey Construction. I wanted an aggregate base under the cement and none of the other companies offered this. They all stated that it was not required by the city and didn't offer it as an extra. Micheal Heavey Construction includes the aggregate base in its pricing which was competitive with all the others. The aggregate base was laid and pounded down to make a stable foundation. My older walk had sunk such that the walk was lower than the surrounding curb creating a trip hazard. The aggregate base was an absolute requirement for me. I have read the one star reviews which seem to revolve around contacting Mike rather than on the quality of work. As he seems to oversee all the jobs and do estimates, it is not surprising that he can't always jump, especially during the busy season.I don't see complaints regarding the work itself. Michael forgot the initial meeting and Yvonne (his assistant) had to call us the day of and ask if we even had a meeting with him. Michael's son came out and gave us a verbal quote of $20 to $25 SF and said a written quote would follow. Nothing after 10 days. I called Michael to simply ask when we might get us something and he went crazy on me. He was very curt for no reason AND then he raised the prices to $32 SF (he justified it by saying his son didn't know what he was talking about and the HE was the owner of the company and he made the final decisions). If you can deal with erratic behavior and a moving cost, Michael Heavey is your contractor. read more
