I live right behind Sala Thai so I'm very biased. I know the owner and employees and they're all wonderfully friendly people. They know my voice on the phone and ask me, "Do you want the usual?" Makes me feel like family. The food is above average. I love the place because of the people and the portion sizes. They spoil me. The pad see oew with tofu is my favorite. I could eat a bucket of it at one sitting. All their rice dishes are savory, and their lunch specials are hard to top: A main dish, soup or salad, egg roll or dumpling for no more than 9 boodles. Not bad. Now I will say that I'm not the biggest fan of their egg rolls. I love thai spring rolls (fried) but they don't really make them which is a big downer for me. I got rad na & som tum (papaya salad) asked for both to be extremely spicy. While on the phone placing order she kept saying "ok mild ok I'll make it medium" to which I kept saying "no I want it as spicy as you could make it , very very spicy, I'm Thai" So as a Thai person, born in Thailand (especially northern Thailand where food is pretty spicy) I kinda know a thing or two on good Thai food. My mom has had 3 Thai restaurants, one of which in Thailand where the queen visited frequently, this was absolute trash. ANYWAYS. Got my food and the noodles were basically one, it was so gummy, so bland. Terrible. I didn't see a single chili and there was absolutely no spice I face this a lot with Thai restaurants in the states when you ask for things be very spicy bc they assume you might be too white to handle it. I basically had to remake the whole meal adding in spices and sauces. I really never write bad reviews but this was absolute TRAAAAAAASH, and to the people not cultured enough in Thai food or flavor .... You'll probably like it. I cannot begin to explain how sweet the owners and chef are. We love their Tom ka soup, it's my son's favorite. He had a severe dairy allergy when he was younger, and so eating out was always scary. The staff always took great care and time to explain ingredients and ensure us the food was safe. It's also delicious! My whole family loves it here. The chef even came out (pre-Covid) to talk to us about preparing the soup at home, on our own. I thought that was so sweet. I love their curries and drunken noodles. Food was mostly good but the portions were really small given the price. I was most disappointed in the Garlic Shrimp which only had 5 shrimps and some green beans as fillers for $13. Only filled up about half of the small to go container. It was evident that they were trying to skimp. If I had known how small the portion was, I would have gotten something else that's more filling and worth the price. Service is good. People are kind. Food is presented about the same but the flavor isnt there. I had the pad kra pow and the first floavor that hits my tongue is sweet then a very mild spice. If anything the sweet should be subtle and the spice should immexiately make me sweat. Having lived in Thailand may have changed my perspective compared to what most people may want but if its a genuine thai place spice should be included on this dish and I shouldnt be asking for chili powder rather than another cup of water. We live very close by and eat here often. It's an intimate and relaxing thai bistro with plenty of parking and rarely much of a wait. Best Tom Ka I have ever had. Restaurant is clean & lovely and the service is fantastic. The food is always made fresh, has great flavors, and the prices are right. Tonight, we got the lettuce wrap, the tom ka, and the pad Thai... everything was scrumptious! We are ridiculously full and the check was less than $40! Oh! They also have an incredible peanut sauce and jasmine tea. So glad this is so close to home. read more

I tried this restaurant based off of the reviews. I ordered the shrimp pad Thai, the stuffed chicken and the ragoons. The shrimp pad Thai was very bland. It had no flavor and about 2 pieces of shrimp. The stuffed chicken was okay. It was not seasoned on the outside or the inside. The only tasteful item was the ragoons. I wasn't too happy for what I paid, about $31 and some change. I definitely will not be coming back. Such a shame I wasted my money. read more

The chu-chee salmon, kra prow, pad see eew, pineapple curry, larb, etc. are all really great. The owner is a very genuine and kind woman. Customer service is A++. I came with my two kids and they enjoyed as well. I will definitely come back. We had the panang curry. It was a little spicy for me, but doable. If you are sensitive to heat, maybe you should ask of it can be made more mildly. We also had the Pad See Ew, which was very well balanced flavor-wise, and the Pad Thai. Both were excellent. I asked for slight modifications to my dish, and they were happy to do it, unlike acting as though it were a burden. This was my second time here and all I could remember was that it wasn't that bad. I'd give it a solid 3 stars. It doesn't compare to Bahn Thai or Plumeria, and for the price (almost $11), the portion is rather small. I hate that they put carrots and broccoli in it too, which isn't that big of deal, just don't like it. The owner is a TOTAL doll and the service is super friendly and accommodating. *Lunch review I was introduced to Sala Thai by my coworkers when we gathered for lunch one day. We were all interested in the lunch specials, in which honestly you really can't beat with the quality and quantity that you're getting without losing an arm and leg. The lunch specials are Mon-Sat 11am-3pm (except for holidays) and it includes: a plate (choice of wok dishes, fried rice options, various curries, and noodles) with your choice of protein and an appetizer (choose soup, salad with peanut dressing, pork stuffed egg roll, and veggie dumplings)....all for less than $10 depending on your choice of protein. I ended up getting a beef pad se ew (stir fried flat noodles, eggs, broccoli, and soy sauce) and a Tom Ka soup. Oh boy, it was quite a lunch!!! The Tom Ka soup came out first and I loved every drop of it. For anyone who hasn't had it, Tom Ka soup included coconut milk with mushrooms, lemon grass, lime juice, green onions, and gangala root (from the ginger family). Sounds like quite a medley huh? I was a bit hesitant to try it with the coconut but it was really good! It wasn't overly creamy but gave off a pleasant savory taste with slight hint of coconut. The pad se ew was good...perhaps not as spicy as I expected but they provide plenty of condiments to add some heat. The portion was pretty generous as I ended up taking home leftovers. Customer service was really great! I don't recall a time when my water glass wasn't full and I get pretty thirsty when I'm eating Thai food ! read more

Just enjoyed a delicious lunch special with green curry and vegetable dumplings. They made it very spicy for me today since I wasn't sharing with my kids today. I've been coming here for 10 years and it has always been excellent. They close at 9:30 and will seat as late as 9:00 or maybe 9:10 if possible. I also had the fried shrimp which was subservient with the chef's signature sauce, "The Last Hot Sauce." SERVICE: Everything came out really quickly. Also, if there was anything I ever needed, there was always someone there to serve me. ATMOSPHERE: Nice, warm and quiet atmosphere. Everything was beautiful; even the napkins were folded elegantly and the food neatly plated. This place is hella far away from my house, but well worth the drive. My good friends, my daughter, and I all braved traffic heading east (and all of the insane college traffic) to come eat at Sala Thai Restaurant. You have to LOOK for Sala Thai in the little plaza it's in, but it's on the left side of the plaza that I believe used to be a drive-in theater. We were seated very quickly, and the service is awesome! Tong, the owner's son, served us most of the time. He had great recommendations for all of the different tastes in our group, including my picky daughter. We started with the crab rangoons, my friends ordered tom yum (if not that, then tom ka, but I don't remember their being coconut milk, so it probably is tom yum) soup, I had the tofu soup, and then we ordered yellow curry, sweet and sour shrimp, Pad Thai, and my daughter had a special plate of chicken made just for her (your server might know what it is if you ask about the chicken that kids really like). The food was amazing! The crab rangoons had just the right amount of crab, with not too much cream cheese (I hate when the cream cheese overpowers the crab). The soups were delicious. I really liked my friend's tom yum soup; the spices and oils were exquisite and had a kick without burning the mouth. My tofu soup was very mild. If you're not in the mood for spicy food, I'd recommend this soup. It's pretty much a vegetable soup in a clear, yellow broth. Think chicken noodle soup, but Thai. My friends loved their curry and sweet and sour shrimp, although I didn't try them. The fact that my daughter ate at least half of what was on her plate is a testament to how good the chicken must have been! I thought it was very cute that her rice was shaped like a heart, too. My Pad Thai was great! The crushed peanuts were a perfect touch, and the flavor was sweeter than I expected, but still good. For dessert, we were surprised with a sort of dessert sampler, on the house! The plate consisted of coconut ice cream on a bed of crushed peanuts, fried bananas, and this AMAZING sticky rice topped with mangoes. Oh. My. Goodness. The sticky rice with mangos was so good! The coconut ice cream was probably my second favorite item. The fried bananas were sweet and delicious, but unless I'm having a potassium craving (it happens), bananas aren't that exciting to me. The service was great! Tong was so nice to us the entire time, and he didn't mind when my social daughter kept him at our table all night with her questions, Simon Says games, and conversation. He was also the one who suggested the chicken, as his niece really enjoyed it. He even showed off his dance moves for my daughter and told us that he used to work with kids. He's really a cool guy. The atmosphere is lovely; the dim lighting sets a more intimate and romantic mood. Prices are very, very reasonable. I love that Sala Thai Restaurant is family-owned, so it gives me great pleasure to review them favorably. I'd definitely recommend this place if you're in the vicinity of San Diego State University or the surrounding neighborhoods. read more
