I finally got a chance to swing by here and i loveed it! I ordered the pumpkin curry with vegan chicken, plus a side of rice and a Thai tea with almond milk. Everything was so delicious, especially the curry. The portion was huge, I had enough leftovers for dinner later that night. The Thai tea was also really good, and the service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean, and the location is great since there are plenty of nearby spots if you're in the mood for Thai desserts afterward, although they also have desserts on the menu. Overall, it was a great meal, and I'm already looking forward to coming back to try more of the menu because everything looked amazing. Would have been great if the curry came with rice but you have to order that separate. Either way loved the food. read more

I met the one, the only, the totally inimitable Dave Benitez here last summer. We were seeing Primus at L.A.'s Greek Theatre, and we needed a close-to-the-concert place to meet, eat, and leave Dave's car. Dave chose Salaya, and I'm so glad he did. Because I'm very familiar with middle-of-L.A. strip malls, I know that when a place has parking, that doesn't necessarily mean you will find any parking. I was able to snag odd street parking only a block away, so I was shocked when I walked to the restaurant and found two or three open spots right out front. It's a cute little place, and the food is good. I wasn't wowed by anything, but then I also wasn't terribly adventurous in my ordering. I want to return to give it more tries, but how often realistically am I meeting a cult-following-famous-but-largely-personally-unknown musician close but not that close to the Greek Theatre because he lives in Culver City and my parents live in Whittier? I mean, yeah, I see Dave often, and we have seen quite a few shows together, but right here? On Hollywood Boulevard? Not often. The bathroom is almost gloriously serene. You really should pay it a visit. The service is OK. I'm actually having a tough time with this rating. Food, ambiance, and surprise factor are in the high threes or low fours. Service, though? It's not bad, but it's not great either. What is really complicating things is paying almost $20 for a single entree at an admittedly gorgeous little diamond in the rough in an honestly run-down strip mall in the middle of L.A. You have your choice of Thai Iced Tea or Thai Iced Coffee, Fresh Young Coconut, Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Ginger Brew, Lemonade, Still Water, Sparkling Water, Bottled Water and various Hot Teas. I've passed by Salaya several times, but it's always been closed when I happen to be in the area. I finally made the trip out during the day, around 3:3-0 on a Saturday and the place was totally empty. A few people came in while I was there, but pretty quiet. I ordered the pad woon sen ($17.99) because it had mushrooms and was a new dish for me. It had fresh veggies and vegan chicken (which I think is seitan), but the dish was just meh to me. Nothing bad, just not particularly flavorful or exciting. It was whatever. I found myself wishing I had ordered one of my go-to Thai dishes or just gone to Hollywood Thai down the street. I hadn't seen anyone mention the pad woon sen in other reviews so I figured I would add my experience in case you're considering trying it. I would skip this and order something else. That said, I will come back at some point in the future to try a different dish because they are fully vegan restaurant and I want to support that. I'm giving 3 stars because I don't think I could rate any higher unless I tried a dish I really loved. read more

Food we started with appetizer spicy green curry samosa, there was no squash as specified, tasted like regular samosa with a hint of green curry taste. Tom yum Gyoza miso soup was good. Gyozo did not add value. Kow soi yellow curry was creamy and rich Spicy cashew nuts were good too. Dumplings in green curry was subtle and tasted good. A thoroughly impressive vegan menu that prominently features Thai food, as well as some American food like burgers and sandwiches and some Japanese food like ramen and sushi. Most meals come with a protein in the form of plant-based beef or chicken substitute, or tofu, and even vegan shrimp! There's tables and booths in a pretty spacious interior with a high ceiling. Makes for a very bright and welcoming space. Service is quick and I was offered guidance when I asked which eggplant dish is "better" - and that's admittedly some subjective language to impose on waitstaff. They did not lead me astray with steering me to the Eggplant Pad Phrink (battered eggplant in spicy red curry sauce, bell peppers, young pepper corn and basil) over the Spicy Eggplant (stir-fried eggplant in sauce with peppers). The Eggplant Pad Phrink really was perfectly dense and delicious. Everything was so fresh-tasting and hot and good! They even asked what spice level I wanted, and appropriately toned it down for me. My friend and I had empanadas and corn cakes as appetizers. Those are both MUST HAVES, and I can see myself ordering them again. I also sampled the Salaya Pumpkin with a beef protein during this visit and it was on point. I had visited here once before and had the poke bowl with a vegan tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and saffron roe- and that dish was fantastic, too. Parking is around if you search for it, as this is in Thai town in Hollywood... there is a very small parking lot, and you will likely rely on metered street parking. Let's call this 4.5 stars. Strongly considering 5 stars, I'll need to visit a third time to reconsider. I hope Salaya never goes away, ever. read more

I have loved the food from this plant based restaurant. But today we ordered favorites for four for Father's Day celebration, and the food was way lower than expected. The rice dish was greasy. The Pad Thai was nothing like Pad Thai and nobody else liked their's. It made me wonder if it had been sold. They are a great choice for both a casual dine-in experience and take-out or delivery. The employees are friendly and will make you feel at home. I eat here frequently and I have enjoyed most of the dishes I've tried, with a couple of rare exceptions. Overall, their ingredients are fresh and flavorful. I was worried how a vegan Tom Yum soup would stack up without the funky fermented fish sauce, but this lighter version still had enough substance, and the veggies therein were perfectly cooked. Panang crispy fish did not disappoint. I'd take half a star off because rice isn't included, and a small bowl of coconut rice is $5, but 'tis LA. Delicious place felt like a very authentic spot, not the fancy LA social-media vibes. It's located in Thai Town near a lot of other Thai restaurants. Thankfully we sat near some people that are locals and frequent Salaya so they have great recs. Enjoyed the pad see ew, very classic and good. Thai tea really was great - tasted like genuine tea with sweet cream. The Thai jerk chicken wings were soy-sauce forward and garlicky so if that appeals to your taste, give it a try. The panang curry was also a solid dish as well. According to the locals you can't go wrong on the menu! I used to love this place & had been here hundreds of times but they have terrible & rude customer service. Plus I just today found out their food is not fresh! Will not be back or ordering from them again. I placed an order through Postmates this last time and ordered the Thai jerk wings instead of the buffalo wings because I was having an issue with the app where it wasn't letting me select the buffalo ones. Literally 30 seconds after I placed my order I called the restaurant to ask if they could make the switch and very rudely Tao said that it wasn't possible because they had already made the wings. Mind you not even 30 seconds passed from me closing Postmates and opening the maps app to call them. I then asked to cancel the order so I could place another order and try again for the right item and again they said they couldn't because the food was already made. I would also like to point out the Thai jerk wings were $3 more which I still didn't mind paying because I just wanted the buffalo wings because thats what I was craving. So despite the item I wanted to switch for being cheaper they didn't want to accommodate because "they were already made" not even 30 seconds after placing the order. My issue is now I know the food isn't fresh & that's disgusting because I was under the assumption that everything was made fresh. Secondly the lady on the phone was super disrespectful & rude. To the manager Annie please hire better staff!!! read more

Everytime my wife and I order take out, we ask for Thai spicy extra hot, and it NEVER COMES SPICY. Never once. It's very annoying because when someone orders spicy, and especially Thai spicy, they want it that way and I know Salaya can, because I order it that way every time I eat in. I don't know if someone can't read the order, but Postmates orders through them are never correct. I really wish they would work on this. read more

This restaurant is a nice, simple, and casual place. It shares a small parking lot with some other businesses but we found a spot easily since we arrived not too long after opening. The service was very sweet and friendly. She was attentive without being too in your face and didn't just leave us alone the whole time. Food: Overall, every dish was suuuuper tasty! My no. 1 recommend is the crispy chicken larb salad. I loved the savory and tangy flavors that were working together in the dish. It was perfect. My only wish was that there were more onions but no complaints whatsoever! Thai Jerk Wings - So surprising! I was interested in the dish upon seeing it in the menu but was worried it wouldn't be that great. The sauce was yum. I loved biting into the "wings" and then getting some of that garlic. Corn Cakes - I tried making these at home before and failed miserably :') These were wonderfully crispy and crunchy! You get a bit of a sweet taste from the corn and it really hits as a nice snack/appetizer dish. Panang Curry - By the time they brought this out, I was already feeling stuffed! I had a few tastes though and it was a delight. Very creamy and savory, had a good balance. The portion is HUGE compared to a majority of other Thai places. They don't skimp on you here. Thai Iced Tea - They have the option of soy, almond, or coconut milk and I chose coconut! I think it worked well to give this iconic drink another layer of flavor. Very refreshing! I'm a simple girl so a Thai Tea can never get messed up for me. I highly recommend this place! Whether you do take out or eat there, please give this place a try. Their prices are standard for Thai restaurants but their portions are worth it. We will be back FOR SURE. This is the first vegan restaurant I tried out of my will and wow it was delicious. The orange chicken tasted great, a bit too sweet for my taste though. The hot wings were crunchy and juicy, but it was a bit too spicy for me. Crispy chicken noodle was crunchy for the chicken and noodles were sweet. Delicious plant-based, vegan restaurant located in East Hollywood! Visited here for the first time at 7:30 PM on a Saturday night to meet a new friend. Unfortunately, it was nearly impossible to find parking. I'm unsure if this is usual, but fortunately, I got super lucky and found neighborhood parking on a nearby street after circling around for 10 minutes. There are an abundance of menu options spanning various cuisines--American, burgers, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and more! We ordered numerous dishes--pad Thai, yellow curry, Chinese broccoli, and vegan "chicken wings". How was everything? AMAZING. WOW. I've been vegetarian and mostly eating vegan for the past 8+ years, having tried many different vegetarian places. This place was phenomenal, and after ordering, everything came out so quickly (within 5-10 minutes? It was so fast!!)! There were 4 other parties dining with us. Highly recommend and definitely plan to come back! At least next time, I'll be more prepared for the parking situation because circling around was just not it, haha. I came here with two others as I appreciate the large amount of vegetarian options offered. Their menu is a combination of Thai food and what might loosely be considered western "American" food. I tried the Beyond pies and bleu burger. For the beyond pies (which are, as you might guess, made of Beyond meat which is a good option for those who can't have soy). The sauce was pretty strong but yummy, and it came with 3 pies. They're kind of like turnovers or those meat pies you might've gotten in elementary or middle school cafeterias in US schools. We tried the avocado curry with broccoli and the spicy eggplant with steamed tofu. Both were incredible! I actually preferred eating all of the elements of the avocado curry without the avocado chunks which I know kind of defeats the purpose but all of the other flavors were so good.
