Mentai Cream + Uni Pasta + Bolognese
Jeff C.

Loved it. Haven't been here in a while and it was just as good as always. Came in for dinner with friends. Simple interior with a decent amount of seating. Good for a couple or small group. The pastas are amazing! The uni and mentai cream are delicious. They have the perfect ratio of pasta and creamy sauce. Pour a little of the chili oil on them to spice them up. If you're looking for something a little more familiar then the Bolognese is a great choice. Service was good. Friendly staff. There's a pay lot in front. But you could also find street meter parking within a block or two.

Yummy. It is a Japanese Italian fusion place but the style of pasta dishes lean more Japanese. The ambiance of the place is also dark and a bit quaint, reminding me of some Japanese taverns. The pastas are spaghetti based and it comes with a side of salad and bread! I personally recommend the mentai pasta as it is flavorful and well balanced.

Ambiance: it's a small bar style place for pasta, narrow walkways and limited seats, not good for large group hangout Service: friend but so rushed, they cleaned the plates so quickly, even before finishing the food, it's not a busy night and not close to their closing hours, not really sure why servers were so impatient and annoyingly interrupted the experience, as a datapoint, it's barely forty minutes from getting seated to leaving the restaurant Food: their menu has a focus on fusion style pasta Salad - ** not fresh, rotten leaves Bread - *** average Arrabiata - **** spicy tomato sauce with bacon and olive, rich in flavors, recommend Uni Pasta - *** Allegro special rich uni cream sauce with sea urchin on top, uni was't fresh and tasted very bitter, and the pasta itself is creamy Price: overall the quality was fine, and slightly pricy for certain items, expect $30+ per person

This location of Pasta e Pasta by Allegro is in the Honda Plaza in the Little Tokyo area. This plaza validates and it's discounted but the parking space is limited. My boyfriend and I found free street parking in the area instead. The service is uncoordinated and push, such as with taking orders or clearing tables. They weren't even that busy on the night we visited but I could feel like we were getting churned. My boyfriend ordered their Beef Ragu Sauce Spaghetti ($25) that comes beef, onions in their original ragu sauce. I had their Uni Pasta ($28) which is suppose to be a rich uni cream sauce with fresh uni pasta. All pasta dishes come with salad and bread, which came quickly after we ordered. It was nothing special but it was included so I won't complain too much. However I will complain about my sad sad uni pasta. It was so strangely watery and the noodles were not well coated at all. It lacked the creaminess they promised in the description. The taste of sea urchin was not too strong either. My boyfriend's pick was the better of the two dishes. The pasta was cooked perfectly and there was a generous amount of beef. It was a decent spaghetti, but it's not hard to find decent spaghetti. I'll stick to Café Hiro in Cypress the next time I want Uni Pasta.

Craving Japanese. Always craving Japanese. So, since I'm not far from Little Tokyo, I finally tried this place. It's in the Honda Plaza. If you get there early you'll find parking. Arrived before opening so I had my choice of parking spots. I don't remember how much. If not, there are garages, street parking and other lots around. Walked in and sat at the counter. Figured I could watch the staff do their magic but unless you stand, you won't be able to see. Or if you're a giraffe. Wasn't busy, but there were other diners. Some tables in the front of the house, and walking back, a dining area - more like the main dining area where you might be able to accommodate a large party. Service was efficient. The server aka host aka busser seemed to be stationed a few stools from where I sat. So, he could see if/when I needed or wanted something as I just had to catch his eye. No chit chat which doesn't bother me as I was there to eat. And the food was good. See pics. Enjoyed the method that the gizzards were prepared, seasoned and served. The sauce it was in was nice. I would have poured it over rice but I already was having pasta and had already eaten my salad. I would have been stuffed. The pasta was great. Not too rich, but enough to give the flavor that extra oomph I hope for when eating pasta dishes. The noodles weren't under or over cooked and it went well with the red wine I ordered. I would definitely order the Mentai again. On another note, it was my first visit to this space since it changed from a pizza/bar. I kinda avoided it because I used to hang out back then. Life happens and things change but glad that it was replaced with a place that served it up good enough that I'll be back to try other menu items.

Squid Ink Pasta $22

Came on a weekend dinner. The lot was open so we were able to park on the lot for free. Otherwise, there's limited street parking. We were able to put our name on their Yelp waitlist when we arrived. Waited about 10 minutes before we got a table. Place was packed with couples. It was cool they have bar seating as well. We got the Bolognese for $21 and Squid Ink Pasta for $22. Each dish came with bread and salad. The bread was flavorless and hard. The salad was bland. The Bolognese was very flavorful, but heavy. The Squid Ink Pasta was flavorful and delicious. The squid ink did stain our mouth and lips black. The portions were huge. One pasta was enough the feed two people. Staff were nice and the food came out fast and hot. It's was very nice intimate place for a date or catch up with friends.

Pasta e pasta 2/6/26 Food: 4.9/5 Service: 4.5/5 Value: 4.8/5 I've been here so many times now and this restaurant still consistently makes my top 3 restaurants in the city. I've pretty much established my favorites. * Bacon and mushroom pasta: this is my absolute favorite dish now. I love the richness of the bacon, earthiness of the mushrooms, and simultaneously delicate but rich sauce. * Pescatarian: this is my go to lighter pasta here. The sauce is extremely light and refreshing relative to the other options. I love how much seafood they give us and the seafood is always fresh * Mento: a new discovery this time (is one of the most popular I know) but it definitely immediately cracked the top 3. Super rich, and great flavors. Would strongly recommend! I absolutely won't forget the bread and salad to start. Is simple but is just such a nice way to start the meal, especially with the spicy oil option for the buttered bread!

Came here for the highly raved uni pasta but ended up loving the mental pasta and squid ink pasta more. The uni pasta was good, but paled in comparison to the other two. We also got the beef ragu pasta which honestly was our least favorite dish despite being a special. The carbonara was good but very rich. All the appetizers are a must order, especially the chicken gizzard confit. It was so tender. Yum. We came right at opening for a party of 6 and was seated immediately. The restaurant is pretty small so I'd imagine it'd be a long wait at peak dining times. There's paid parking outside the restaurant so don't have to worry about parking.

Japanese-Italian fusion is probably among my favorites because it takes the best parts of Italian and makes it less heavy and more umami, and who doesn't love that? Their mentai cream pasta is a biblically accurate rendition of the pasta my mom made for me as a child, but the portion is very generous. At its price point, I am frankly shocked that they make money! You also get a light salad that's the perfect first course and also a small piece of bread that looks like airplane bread but is much better. Service is super speedy and very friendly! If you post on Instagram tagging them you also get 10% off!!

I'm OBSESSED with this Japanese- Italian pasta concept. I randomly discovered this spot on Yelp because our initial dinner plan fell through so I didn't realize how popular it is. We did not have reservation, but join the waitlist and were seated after 20 minutes. Food also came out super fast. They offer complimentary bread and salad. The mentai dish is a must try it's so freaking good. Their vegetarian option is also very delicious. Affordable prices for high end tasting food ( and cheap wine ). Vibe feels super intimate. I would definitely com back again ! So glad I found this place.

The top bacon & mushroom japanese style sauce and the bottom is the shrimp & potato pesto pasta.

This place was a 9/10! I love pasta and the pasta was flavorful but I wasn't fan of the bread. The salad was also very good! The ambiance is perfect & the service was good as well. Definitely would come back & would forsure recommend!! Also, if you're driving here the parking is $5 weekdays and $8 on weekends!

i love Japanese italian foods but unfortunately i didn't have the best experience. The service was unwelcoming and i felt rushed during my time there. I have go to spots for when i'm feeling japanese/italian pasta and i am very familiar with how it's supposed to taste and how rich it is but this place was almost TOO rich and heavy. It wasn't enjoyable because of how overpowering it was. The noodles weren't that special either. It could be that the service made the food experience bad but overall, i wouldn't come back.

Can only be seated if everyone in your party is there Salad bomb island dressing I would ask for extra Bread was normal with poppy seed Crab cheese app pretty good with the bread 8/10 Salmon pasta 9/10 really good light taste, doesn't feel heavy Mentai was okay 7/10 I'm not familiar with the taste, but it was very mild Uni pretty light also 8/10 worth a try regardless Good service just flag them down, they are always moving and on their feet. Be patient with them Food comes pretty quick in like 10 mins Fairly loud but a nice family sit down restaurant Big portions would recommend sharing

Maccheroni Republic - Life is full of pasta-bilities!…read more So if you know anything about me, you know that I love pasta more than just about anything. While I can only officially claim about 12% Italian heritage, I'm 100% down for Italian food, especially homemade pasta, any day of the week. I'm spending this week in Little Tokyo for a conference, and while Japanese food is also absolutely my jam, when Maccheroni Republic slid into my Yelp feed, I knew that I had to hoof it over there immediately after we broke for the day. I saw the front of the building, and my heart sank because it looked closed, but then I noted the sign that indicated that the entrance is on the right side of the building through the courtyard. Thank goodness! I strutted through the courtyard, and observed about 15 people waiting for tables. Unbothered, I went up to the host stand and chatted with the stylish maitre'd - Dino - who indicated that he could have a table for me in 7-10 minutes. I proceeded to wait and I watched how he deftly sat the other waiting parties in order without difficulty or notes. To the untrained eye, it might have looked a little chaotic, but Dino absolutely knew what he was doing. About 15 minutes later, Dino sat me at a corner deuce in the inside dining room where I had a nice view of everything. Angel efficiently took my order and did a very good job of overseeing my table as well as about nine others. The dining room is so cute and homey, and the patio is a welcome respite from the bustle and business of downtown. Since I was "da sola" or on my own, I just tried the shrimp cakes and I ordered the Rigatoni all Norma which is one of of my go to pasta dishes since I don't eat much meat. Incidentally, this dish is named after Norma, the famous 19th-century opera composed by Catanese native Vincenzo Bellini. According to legend, a famous Sicilian playwright, Nino Martoglio, tried the pasta and was so overwhelmed by its perfection that he exclaimed, "Chista è 'na vera Norma!" ("This is a true Norma!"), comparing the culinary masterpiece to the musical one. So says Wikipedia anyway. The shrimp cakes were delivered quickly by a sweet food runner who kindly checked on me periodically during my dinner. The four shrimp cakes were accompanied by sauteed onions which paired really nicely with the crispy cakes that were brightened with a spritz from the fresh lemon wedge. She also brought a basket with four slices of Italian bread which I enjoyed with the EVOO and Balsamic that were on the table. My Watermelon Ciao was also so good. It was sweetly tart and such a nice treat on a Monday! Not long after I polished off the shrimp cakes, the rigatoni was delivered and dusted with a generous layer of parmigiana. The little fresh mozzarella pearls glistened on the top of the pasta and slowly melted and oozed into the sauce as I stirred it up. Yum! The rigatoni were al dente and delicious, and they were perfectly sauced. Of course, the eggplant was perfectly cooked as well, I only wish there had been a few more pieces of it - although by the time I ate the last noodle, I was so full! Alas, I had no room for dessert, but I intend to bring some of my conference colleagues back for a meal before the end of the week because it was THAT GOOD. I also loved that this place is NOT pretentious at all. There were all sorts of folks enjoying their food here from medical professionals in scrubs to college kids in shorts and t-shirts, and I was also very casually attired, but I was treated well and welcomed with graciousness and delicious food! Mille grazie Maccheroni Republic, Dino, Angel and everyone at this wonderfully lowkey yet fabulous trattoria.

Lasagna was very rich and decadent and we enjoyed every bite. Gnocchi con carne was delicious as well For dessert we had affogato , espresso was very rich and velvety , with the perfect sweetness. Flourless chocolate cake was amazing . We look forward coming back, the patio was really cute and offered shade and made us feel like we were transported to much calmer atmosphere (love downtown la though ) Above all else , every single staff member we encountered made the experience amazing , we will definitely be back.

Less is more. But let's talk art (culinary, that is). The dishes certainly deserve main features. To start "the best Caesar salad in LA" and I quote which was certainly true. Grilled octopus charred on the inside and juicy at the center. Spicy pomodoro is perfectly al dente and a well-balanced sauce. But, my favorite-- the agnolotti! Wow, melt in your mouth! The flavor profiles of corn, crème fraiche, and old bay were delicious. My only wish -- larger serving of this (smallest pasta serving on the menu). To complete it, banana pudding tiramisu -- delicious too with a firm center and oozy outside. Atala was wonderful and very sweet. Recommendation: come with a group of at least 4 to try more on the menu -- the large plates (branzino and ribeye) looked excellent! Definitely a worthwhile visit.

We came on a Thursday night as a group of four and the place was pretty busy. From everything I've heard, Cento is one of the more popular pasta spots in LA right now, so I was excited to finally try it. We started with the radicchio salad which was delicious. Light, refreshing, and tangy, a great way to start the meal. For pasta, we ordered the Spicy Pomodoro, Sweet Corn Agnolotti, Broccoli Bucatini, and the Cavatelli Finocchio. Honestly, it was hard to pick a favorite because every single one was excellent. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, the sauces were flavorful, and each dish felt unique. My only complaint is that the portions are a little small. I understand they're meant for sharing, but to be honest I probably could have eaten all four by myself. At around $30 per plate, this definitely isn't a cheap meal. One thing that was a little disappointing was that it was my fiancée's birthday and I had noted it on the reservation. We noticed another table receiving what looked like a special birthday dessert, but nothing was mentioned for us. My fiancée didn't want me to ask about it, so we just let it go and ended up getting dessert elsewhere. Not a huge deal, but it was a bit of a letdown. That said, the food itself was absolutely outstanding. If you're a pasta lover, this place is definitely worth checking out.

We loved his energy, it wasn't over the top and it was very mellow, but also he was on top of everything and checked in with us and gave us great suggestions for drinks, appetizers, entrees. I will say, this place looks fancy and expensive and also a dream. The outdoor seating is like you're eating in a countryside in Europe and not in Downtown Los Angeles. We sat outside and our table featured a sofa as one of the seating options. We had the best girl dinner and were able to catch up over drinks and food and Candlelight and I didn't want to leave. I had the pizza, my sister had the filet mignon and one of us had the pasta . The calimari was good as the starter and they also had house bread which was so good. The Settecento pizza was my favorite and their pizzas are delicious, light, airy, full of flavor. My sister said her filet was ok but the mushroom sauce was delicious. For dessert, I believe we ordered the Tortino and the Tiramisu and both were great but the Tortino was a little better. I ordered the Toki Pona to drink and couldn't finish it but it was very good. Definitely recommend eating here to everyone. It's great food, ambiance and our server Angel took great care of us.

I even added sea salt to try to enhance the flavor, but it was still only average. The pizza wasn't bad, but it's not something I would order again. A nice dinner spot to give a try if you are craving some good Italian food. I had a reservation but…read moreit didn't get very busy when I was there on a Saturday night. I know this place used to be pretty busy and booked but think the hype might've died down? But I love it cause I was able to enjoy dinner with my friends comfortably. We ordered the arugula salad, squash blossoms, bread, prawns in the salsa verde sauce, oxtail meatballs, the oxtail ragu pasta and carbonara pasta. The salad was delicious and the perfect start to the carb overload coming. It was the perfect amount of lemon that it wasn't overpowering. The squash blossoms were delicious! Definitely one of our top three dishes. The bread was airy and simple, but it was delicious. The prawns and the sauce. *Chef's kiss* The meatballs were delicious and definitely something unique and different. Definitely enjoyed that. The oxtail ragu pasta was delicious. The carbonara pasta was a little undercooked and the flavor wasn't there. It just tasted like butter and pasta.. that was probably our least favorite dish. Everything was good and would be back again to try maybe some other pastas or even the pizzas.
