    SHRIMP BIG BOWL
    Rhena S.

While in Tampa we stopped here for a quick bite to eat. I ordered the shrimp bowl which consisted of grilled shrimp, yellow rice, black beans, onions, bell peppers and jalapeños. The service was good, the staff was nice. The shrimp bowl was served hot and was actually very flavorful. I would for sure order this again.

Can we ever get polite service in da hood? Cashier gave me a mean look without responding when I said hi and thank you. Attitudes! Why go into customer service if you hate people?

I come to Salem's Fresh Eats at this location at least once a week. I order the same thing every time which is the the Big Bowl with Grilled Shrimp. The bowl is made with nicely seasoned rice, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, grilled green peppers, and grilled jalapeno peppers. They give you a nice amount of grilled shrimp on it too. It's delicious! I've always received good customer service from this location. I've always gone through the drive-thru and the staff has usually been courteous. There is usually a 10-15 minute wait once you order your food but it's worth it because the food is made fresh and it is delicious. Soooo, tonight, January 13th 2021 at 8:19 p.m., I order my usual. The nice young lady with pretty green dreads takes my money and gives me my receipt. As I'm waiting, I notice this young guy with a army fatigue hat, green jacket and glasses walking up to the window. I see him make a drink from the fountain for a customer that I assume is waiting inside the restaurant. The entire time his mask is below his chin. I see him walking towards where the kitchen is. He doesn't go into the kitchen but he talks to someone through the window where the the food comes out. He keeps walking between the kitchen window, the counter, and the drive thru window. He is just all up and around the food and drinks with NO MASK! The other young person with the colored dreads keeps her mask on the whole time. When I asked him if he could put his mask over his mouth and nose because he is around the food being prepared, he responded sarcastically "Do I really need to put it on. I'm working up front? I'm not handling the food." Where is the manager and why would they allow this. I threw my food out. I work in the health care industry and this s*** is real. This location would have earned 4.5 out of 5 stars; however, today really makes me not want to come back at least until after this pandemic is over!

Not pretty or fancy... but dang it's good. The Philly can feed two. The lamb Gyro is legit. Check it out

Pressed and formed gyro meat; not shaved.

Salem's is a well known Tampa spot especially for late night meals. I've never been so gave them a try at the Ybor location. First off, girl that took my order was sweet and accurate. The wait was 20 min with 3 cars in front of me and I was prepared for that amount of time. I paid $30 for 2 meals and only 1 came with a drink. I got a gyro sandwich with Cheese fries and a large fruit punch. The fries were piping hot with a nacho cheese sauce over them. I think fries would be a safe option for anyone. The cheese sauce is good if you like that artificial nacho orange sauce and a lot of people do. (Culver's has the best cheese sauce imo). Salems cheese fries on their own are over $8 dollars with tax - seems overpriced to me and it was $3 extra to upgrade my side of fries to cheese fries and a $1 to upgrade to a large drink. The gyro meat was pressed and formed like lunch meat. I was disappointed bc I thought it would be shaved off of a big hunk of meat like the Greek places I go to but it's not. It was like the cafeteria meat I used to get in elementary school in Maryland. The big bowl with grilled tilapia was also a no. The tilapia was under seasoned and rubbery. The size of the big bowl is very generous but since it's mostly just rice and beans: the vegetarian bowl is overpriced at $11. (It's the same price as the other bowls with chicken, shrimp or fish). The bowls comes with yellow rice, black beans, sweet and hot peppers and cooked onions. My preference would be to have chopped peppers instead of long stringy ones but not a big deal. The rice and beans were good. I am going to try another location and get the fried fish, wings or cheesesteak as these items have been recommended to me by others.

We chose cake slices as there are many options and everyone had a favorite. The cakes give me a homestyle feel. Like homemade cake and icing. Gourmet southern goodness. The cakes are slathered with lots of icing, which I mostly removed because I like my cake without. Which to me tells me how good the cake is that it can stand alone without the frosting. Hummingbird, lemon, chocolate, and carrot cakes reign supreme. The frosting on the chocolate cake makes the cake, it's fantastic. We also tried the massive cinnamon rolls which are 5 stars! I will definitely be visiting Wright's for cakes for the next party. It's sure to be a party favorite! And excited to get back to try some sandwiches, the Alpine cake, and Chill Bros icecream!

Unfortunately, after my most recent experience, I won't be returning. I stopped in around 3:00 p.m. and was happy to see it wasn't busy. I went to the deli counter, waited for someone to serve me, ordered my chicken salad, grabbed a soda and chips, and headed to the open register. As I walked up, the cashier called another customer over ahead of me. I waited while he spent several minutes deciding whether to pay cash or by card because of the 4% card fee. I continued standing there with my three items, to the point that I actually set them down and debated walking out. Then, instead of helping me, the cashier motioned for an entire family to come to the registereven though I had been standing there waiting before they arrived. After that, she waved over another customer, and I had to wait while a mother and her two teenagers decided which desserts they wanted. Again, I stood there patiently. When it was finally my turn, there was no greeting, no "thank you for waiting," nothing. The first thing I was asked was, "Do you have a pickup order?" I said no. She then motioned for my chicken salad container, saying she needed it. I placed it on the scale and set my other items on the counter. The cashier then asked, "Are you okay?" I simply shook my head because, honestly, I wasn't. Instead of recognizing why I was frustrated, she continued talking, making comments, and escalating the interaction rather than simply ringing me up. At that point, I asked, "Do you want to argue? Do you want me to go back and forth with you?" I then asked who the manager was. She pointed to a woman beside her, who identified herself as the owner. I asked if she could ring me up instead. Even then, the cashier continued making comments. It was only after she continued engaging me that my voice became louder in response. Rather than addressing the repeated comments from her employee or asking what had happened, the owner immediately said, "Do not raise your voice at my employee." That response was disappointing. There was no concern for the customer experience, no apology for repeatedly being skipped in line, and no attempt to resolve the situation. There was also no acknowledgment that the interaction had been escalated by the cashier's continued remarks before I ever raised my voice. The irony is that I have spent a significant amount of money catering from Frankie's Deli over the years because my customers love the food. Good food will bring people in once. Great customer service keeps them coming back. Sadly, this experience ended that relationship for me. There are plenty of places with great food, but respect and customer service matter just as much. One final thought: this is Florida not NY. Hospitality goes a long way. The aggressive, dismissive attitude I experienced isn't what I expect when supporting a local business. I won't be back.
