Worst dining experience ever! Bad food, HORRIBLE service, and lost our credit card
We have been in Alaska for 6 weeks now, and have been been to some winners and some tourist traps, but this was really the worst. Located just outside of Exit Glacier, they are busy, but their motto of Cheap beer and Lousy food, is not really funny so much as it is true.
We were told that it would be a 35 minute wait, which we agreed to. 45 minutes later, hubby checked in with hostess, as several parties had been seated that came in behind us. She seemed confused as to who we were.
She got us seated, and about 15 minutes later, the waitress, Shelby, showed up, and wanted our entire order. Very irritated that we had questions about the menu, and wanted a minute ( while she brought drinks) to make choices based on answers to the questions. Corn bread was provided, put was dry, and too spicy for kids. Parents tried it, but it had a weird aftertaste.
Shelby brought the drinks, and the local beer was very cold, and tasty, but in a smaller mason jar than most restaurants. We ordered 3 cups of chowder, crab legs, and halibut fish & chips.
30 minutes later, she arrived with the dinners. Hubby asked if she had forgotten the chowder, and she stated that they were still on their way. About 8 minutes later, she arrived with the chowder, and complained that there were too many plates on the table, and she had nowhere to put the chowder...Hubby mentioned that this was probably why soup was served before dinner in most places, and she stated that 'this is the way the kitchen sends out the food, so this is the way you get it'.
Chowder was luke warm and mealy/ gritty, with large chunks of fish, but very little flavor. Crab was very good, but F&C was not. Most of the breading got picked off in order to make fish edible.
Halfway through the meal, we needed refills on drinks, and more lemons ( to Dr up the F&C) We tried to get Shelby's attention several times, but she refused to look at our table as she walked by. We tried to catch the attention of the hostess, by calling excuse me in increasingly louder voices, when she got near our table, but she never heard us. There was a man wearing a tshirt with 6-8 dime to quarter sized holes in it that was clearing nearby tables. We tried to flag him down, but to no avail... Finally put a hand into the aisle, and stopped Shelby. She physically huffed when we made our request for more sodas and lemons ( hubby and I had decided that a second round of beers would only be spending more money in a very bad establishment) Shelby returned a few minutes later, and bounced the drinks down in front of the kids, and ran before we could ask for anything else.
We sat in front of dirty dishes for about 15 minutes before we could catch Shelby again, and ask for the bill. 10 minutes later she arrived, and my hubby gave her the credit card. She whipped around so fast, to leave, that the credit card flew out of the case, and between the cracks of the floorboards. There was some panic and confusion about what to do, and finally the owner was called ( guy in the holy tshirt turns out to be the owner) He states that it will take at least 20 -30 minutes to get the card out from under the building, and offers us $20 off the bill.
At this point I am angry, and ( regrettably) start telling the mgr in a loud voice ( in order to alert potential patrons waiting to be seated) that this was the absolute worst dining experience that I had ever had. Shelby yelled that we did not understand that she was also waiting on a party of 10 on the patio...They asked us for a 2nd credit card, and Shelby snatched it up, even though I asked the mgr to run this card for us ( as we could not afford to lose both CCs in the middle of an Alaska vacation) and Shelby again yelled at me that she was going to run our card. she returned, and slammed down the card on the hostess station and stormed off.
Owner stands mute on the sidelines during this entire exchange.
Tonight we went to Chinooks. Great views, WONDERFUL food, and Service was AMAZING. Prices were $1-2 higher per item. Save yourself the time, energy, and money of a lousy meal, and drive the 10 minutes into Seward.... you'll be super glad you did. read more
