MY BOTCHED JOURNEY i went to a hair salon in ctown based on a recommendation for my first haircut in SF. i walked in with past shoulder length hair and asked for a cut resembling an asymmetric bob. i showed the guy pictures and walked out looking like a ten yr old went to town with blunt scissors on my hair while i was asleep. the cut looked and felt uneven and unfinished and it was even worse than from these posted "before photos" when i washed it out this morning ... as someone who has tried short pixie hairstyles, i near gave up and was going to just cut off all my hair myself or shave it off completely with my dogs hair clippers but with a lil pep talk from my husband i shook myself out of my rage and mustered up enough courage to seek out another, more adept, salon and thankfully found melinda at this lovely clean spot! and omg what a godsend! she took my botched up hair cut and skillfully transformed it into what i originally requested at the previous salon. unfortunately it was shorter than what i originally wanted but she comforted me the WHOLE entire time and even got me to laugh about the botched hair experience. (really, i doubt any other stylist could have had better chairside manner!) she explained every single part of the process of the cut and even offered me so many alternatives to the final style from length to angle to layer. she took her time with me and my nervous self and took my hair texture, habits and requests into consideration the entire way through and never once made me feel unwelcome or dismissed as some other stylists can do when you, god forbid, tell them your preferences or opinion. i realllly can not thank her enough for taking me in on such short notice and transforming the hideous style i walked in with into the edgy and chic style i walked out with and also for being soooo kind and patient and compassionate!! as a cherry on top, as a first time client at their salon i got a $30 gift certificate to use towards my next visit! TLDR: clean salon with really nice skilled professionals. melinda was my stylist and fixed my chopped-up botched-up hair cut into a sleek asymmetric bob. highly recommend! read more

Had highlights done by Vivian and hair cut by Mia and both were masters at their art. Vivian took her time hand painting each strand of my hair and watching Mia cut my hair was like a dance! I showed them some inspo pictures, noted my hair is very low maintenance and let them take the lead. I definitely was hesitant with the end result (mainly because I wasn't used to the new look and color) but after embracing it for a week I gotta say, I am loving my new do! Love, love, LOVED my experience here at Salon Nine! I can't say enough good things! I came here a couple of weeks ago looking to spice up my virgin, black hair, and I am so happy with the result. Ale was my colorist and Mari was my hairdresser and they both did a fantastic job. With this being my first experience at a salon, I really put all my trust into the both of them and said to do whatever they thought was good. I brought in a couple of reference pictures to give them the vibe of what I wanted and had them do the rest. I ended up with a nice ash blonde balayage with hints of caramel and a yellower blonde. It's important to note that I have thin Asian hair-- but A LOT of it. Regardless, Ale was incredibly detailed with painting every little section of my hair so that the result would look as natural as possible. He was constantly inspecting his work to make sure that it looked good from all angles. I had told him that I wanted something subtle but also gave my hair that "oomph", and he listened! He was very patient in answering all my questions about hair care as well. Mari is a goddess with her scissors and was able to give me the exact cut I was looking for! She helped shape my hair in a way that I never knew was possible. She was somehow able to thin my hair out while still maintaining volume and gave me great curtain bangs and layers. Shannon is amazing! She's a pro at cutting hair but also so fun to talk to. I work close by and usually get my nails done next door so I was always passing by this salon. I decided to get my hair colored one day with Kaela and she was also great! She got rid of all of my dried out highlights and did one overall color. I received an email about their anniversary one day and signed up for a hair cut with Shannon. I was so in need of one because my ends were dry and I haven't had a cut in about 8 months or so. I went to this salon due to amazing reviews of Yelp, however they are too pricy for the average service. As I needed appointment on the same day, I called and the phone experience and consultation was pretty good and professional. I managed to get the appointment on the same day. The only red flag was the fact that I couldn't tip on the card: I never carry cash so I had to go to ATM on purpose for this. I was told in advance though. I did a tint/gloss with Lisa and that was good ($165+$30 tip). I did blow dry service with Vivian and that was below average: not much of interpersonal skills and it was very quick. As first time customer, I was expecting to check in on style. I was asked couple of questions but they didn't lead anywhere. I was surprised at the tools use: a very small blow dryer and 1 type of brush that I never seen used to style hair. My hair is not even too long. This is definitely not a blow dry service worth $83+$20 tip which I kinda felt forced to give anyway. While I was there, the vibe of the place felt good and positive for existing customers. I wasn't really provided instructions on where to go to pay or how that work (as they have an upstairs and downstairs). The payment set up is a little bit awkward: there's a very small table and you need to put your tips in envelops and writing on them but there's almost not enough space to write. read more

I went for a haircut and highlights, but I found the talent here to be very average. I can tell when someone knows how to do layers, and this was just "meh." My friend said she saw no difference before and after the haircut. I didn't get highlights but received a consultation from a stylist. I strongly feel I should mention her name but I will leave it out since I didn't actually receive any services from her. She asked me to show her a picture of how I wanted my highlights to look. The first picture of me received a "wow," but after seeing the second picture of a woman with dark hair and blonde highlights, she looked irritated and snapped, "She is white," without any further explanation. I had to ask for clarification. She meant that lighter highlights were easier on white women. I have been getting highlights for 20 years and have never had such a reaction. Afterwards, she asked if I colored my roots at home. When I answered in affirmative, she went onto explain that would make highlights even harder. She never followed up on what kind of color, I use professional Wella color, not sure if the assumption was that I use the ones from the pharmacy, which are harder to work with. Anyway, I wasn't asking for anything different than what I have done numerous times in the past. It was such a turn off. I wouldn't be going back. In the beginning, the same stylist declared that my hair was a good length and I shouldn't get it any shorter. It wasn't a suggestion, it was a declaration from her. I have medium length hair and if I wanted another inch off that was none of her business. There were two people at the reception. One seemed very new and was rough around the edges in how she spoke. Actually that seems to be the theme at this salon. Except for the other girl at reception, who was wonderful and the only reason I left the place not too upset. She was polite, professional, very attentive to the customers' needs and apologized for not being able to accommodate my request for an extra trim. read more

Finally had time to drop by and get a haircut with my favorite hair stylist Shannon! The last time I got a haircut was 5 months ago and my hair really grew LOL. I made an appointment by calling their salons phone number. Process was easy & quick. I really like how my haircut turn out the first time so I know I was left in good hands. Shannon is super sweet & professional. I missed her so much! We decided to chop off a huge chunk of my hair (about 6 inches) since there was a lot of split ends & it was really damage due to bleaching it. I'm a pretty simple gal, I just told Shannon I wanted layers & face framing! Haircut, wash, blow dry, style took about an hour & a half. Honestly it went by so quick because it felt like I was catching up with an old friend of mine. If you're a returning customer you get $30 off, they'll give you a coupon! I got a haircut from Melinda and it was amazing 5/5. She was really friendly and also helpful regarding providing knowledge on future hair care. I'm giving this place 3/5 solely because of my checkout process. I had made an appointment two weeks ago that I was late to and they weren't able to rebook me the same day so I was going to be charged a no-show fee. They didn't have my credit card information or anything so I didn't really know what was going to happen, there was no communication on their end. They proceeded to add the charge on top of my rebooked haircut without telling me that was the case ($115 haircut + $58 fee). I was taken off guard and when I questioned the fee being added I felt like their response created a hostile environment. The woman claimed that me not being able to attend the appointment cost my hairdresser money because someone else could have had an appointment and tipped her. I get that. But then to charge me the fee on top of my haircut with no transparency, how am I supposed to give an appropriate tip when I'm paying almost $200 for a regular haircut...no color or anything? You're still taking money away from the hairdresser at the end of the day when you put the fee on me. I enjoyed my haircut but because of this experience I don't know if I can go back. read more

Yosh was a creative cutting edge salon. Spin-off Salon Nine is not. Long hair, need a trim? Short hair, nothing out of the ordinary? Low expectations? You'll be ok. Decent haircut, insofar as precision. Outcome of the style is hit or miss. Best not to have expectations that you'll get what you want. My stylist chopped my hair all the way off after specifically telling her I didn't want it cut, just lightly shaped. Not the first time it's happened here. This review is for Hanabi!! After months of trying to decide on whether or not I wanted to get bangs, I finally gave in and scheduled an appointment with Hanabi at Salon Nine! My regular hairstylist wasn't in town and for some reason I didn't trust her to give me bangs.. so I did some research and saw Hanabi's work! I got to the Salon a little earlier than my scheduled appointment and the receptionist gave me a robe to change into, I was directed upstairs where Hanabi greeted me. When she sat me down, she asked exactly what I wanted and she did everything I told her! I needed a tiny bit of length off my ends/get rid of some weight and most importantly, I wanted wispy front bangs. Hanabi was so engaging and sweet, the entire experience was amazing! I was so happy with the end result!! But of course being so particular, I tried the hairstyle out for a few days and I decided I wanted more bangs. And I hate putting stuff in my hair but she helped me find a lightweight protective styling mousse that I'm now in love with. She's also incredibly sweet and friendly!
