There has never been a stylist that I liked enough to return to on a regular basis. I've had many many terrible, traumatic hair cutting experiences and after the ultimate mess up I vowed never to cut my hair again. I'm not exaggerating when I say I went two years with out so much as a trim because I was too scared. A friend of mine recommended that I check out a girl named Jennifer at Salon Rouge and promised that I would be thrilled with the outcome. Unfortunately Jennifer was not available at the time I made the appointment but I was so desperate I decided to go for it and booked an appointment with Erin Loos. It has been at least six years that I have been going to her now. When I first walked in and saw her in with her funky pink, purple, black and blond mullet styled hair I thought to myself "wow!" Not only is Erin as sweet and nice and Mother Theresa she is extremely talented. The haircut and style was so good I wanted to cry. She is the ONLY person I ever go to and the first person that has ever gotten my business more than once. When I moved out of the area for a few years I still made the trek to Thousand Oaks to see her. I've been to this place a few times and had two different girls do my hair. Not to be disloyal, one just happened to be out of town and I'm impatient. It wasn't a big deal at all. You can tell that everyone gets along there and is a very drama-free place. Each time I've gone I've been so pleased with the results.Cute little place too. I've lived in Ventura County now for 3 1/2 years and have tried 5 different hair places - none have compared to Salon Rouge. Appointments are usually easy to get, even on short notice. The first time I went I made the apt the same day. Its a big salon with a clean environment that is inviting and laid back yet very professional. Paige has been doing my hair and is absolutely amazing. It was 3 or 4 weeks in between my 1st and 2nd visits and she remembered exactly how I liked it cut without any reminders. She works extremely fast while still able to have a great conversation and after 4 visits has never left me disapointed in the least with my cut. To me that says a lot being that other stylists that I've been to would assert that it takes a few cuts to get to know someones hair. In addition, her price for a mens cut is less than ANY of the other salons that I've been to (?!!!). If for some strange reason you can't get in with Paige she says a lot of talent at Solon Rouge so give them a shot! read more

After reading positive reviews for Jessica Johnson I made an appointment for a cut. Scheduling appointment was easy, check in was easy. Jessica took the time to talk to me about what I wanted and what would work on me. Jessica respected my desire to zone out during the cut (tired mommy syndrome), and gave me a great, cut with precise measuring. Jessica's assistant was great as well. While the precision and quality of the cut was most important to me, I also really appreciated Jessica's professionalism. She was not small talking with others or trash-talking with her assistant. The salon is a bit of a hidden gem...I've lived in Thousand Oaks for 20 yrs now and have never found a salon, nor hairdresser so perfect! And I am one picky gal with my hair! I found Salon Rouge using yelp a few months ago and I have now been to see Vicky Garcia 4 times. She does an amazing job! I usually go for a cut and color and she has found the most amazing shade of auburn that looks completely natural on me. I brought my mom in while she was visiting for my wedding and she had let her hair go gray. Vicky suggested that we weave in some color and it took 10 years off of her! I have very thick wavy hair that has a tendency to frizz. I wanted it to be sleek for the wedding (and honeymoon in Hawaii) so I took the plunge and got the Brazilian Blowout. Syreeta Chase is the TRUTH! Her hair treatment, styling, and care skills are undeniable! I went to Salon Rouge for the first time this past March, having been referred to Syreeta Chase through a friend. After having been through 7+ stylists since moving to L.A. in 2003, I had given up on finding a good salon/stylist here- and within the last few years, was flying out-of-state for a relaxer- crazy, I know! I was nervous but after talking with Syreeta over the phone, she immediately impressed me with her personality and can-do attitude! When I explained to Syreeta my availability, she was so accommodating. I had to come to the salon straight from a long day of work and when she said an 8:30pm appointment on Friday night was no problem, I knew this girl was serious about her business! The Salon Rouge itself is very nice and Syreeta was ready to begin my hair promptly at 8:30pm. She was warm and friendly and when she saw my hair, she was not put-off by the task of taming my wild, thick, frizzy, coarse black girl hair. Syreeta approached my hair with confidence and enthusiasm. We proceeded on with a relaxer, all-over color, and cut. In what has taken other stylists 4 - 5 hours in the past, Syreeta was done with everything within 3 hours! Her service was EXCELLENT. And my hair looked and felt amazing (and still does weeks later)! The compliments have been non-stop. She cut just the right amount so that my hair still has length but will continue to be healthy. Since going to Syreeta, I purchased the line of products she recommended for my hair and the products have been amazing for my hair! Syreeta KNOWS WHAT SHE IS DOING. This woman is a STAR. I looked on Yelp for hair salon ideas. I did not have a regular place to go when I moved to Newbury Park. I saw reviews and called in for Laurie Mower. When I go there she was so sweet and bubbly. She had great ideas and suggestions for my hair. I had long straight cut hair and she helped me decide to get some long layers and sort of a long shag. I loved it! I didn't have time to get back due to a trip but the haircut held up amazingly, it never lost its shape. When I got there a second time she did a slightly shorter version and I loved it. Jessica is one of the few stylists who knows how to deal with my thick, straight asian hair. She has tons of experience with men's hair and knows how to give a great fade. No barber ever gets my hair/fade right, which is why I only go to these kinds of upscale hair salons. The price I pay here (about $40) is much more than what most men want to spend on a haircut, but you get what you pay for. If you're a dude and your barber isn't giving you the haircut you want, swallow your ego and try a girly hair salon. read more

I went in to see Holly yesterday and boy was I disappointed. I have shorter hair in a slight a-line cut and it's also curly. I had usually gone to another stylist when I was back home from college, but I wasn't able to get one last cut in before coming back here. So I had to go to a salon down in TO. I found Salon Rouge on Yelp and thought that I would give it a shot. Holly managed to turn my beautiful curls into a flat rats nest and it has no body to it. She also managed to turn my a-line into a reverse a-line. (don't know how else to put it.) She knew that I had that a-line, she said so herself. Now my hair looks like a ragged pixie cut instead of an a-line bob. I wanted to go home and cry because my hair looked so bad. I was even extremely vocal about what I wanted, trying to make sure that she just followed the lines my other stylist created. But apparently she couldn't do even that. So now I'm stuck with it, wishing I had gone somewhere else. Do not go here if you have a more complex cut. They will mess it up for sure. read more

I waited several days to post this because I wanted to be sure that I would love this hair after I washed and styled it myself. All I can say is OH MY GOD!!! If you're trying to decide if you want a Brazilian Blowout and you're afraid to try it... JUST DO IT! Vicki Garcia at Salon Rouge did a fabulous job! She's super talented, fun, patient with my nerves, and has a great eye for what works and what doesn't. She educated me on how to care for my new hair (I STILL can't believe it's mine!) and I've been sneaking looks in mirrors and running my fingers through it ever since. My super thick, super frizzy hair usually takes 45 minutes to an hour to tame for the day... then I'm doomed if it rains. Now it takes 15 minutes from wet to ready to go! It feels like silk all the time (I can drive with the window open and not worry about the frizz!)! The only blotch on the visit to Salon Rouge was when a younger girl was asked to wash my hair out (Vicky was putting a weave in my daughter's hair while I processed). The girl came to get me and said she was going to wash me out, she was nice and efficiently washed my hair. She then showed me where to sit, placed a tiny towel on my head, and walked away as cold water dripped down my spine. Vicki apologized and helped me quickly, but that was the ONLY negative part of the day! Vicki, you have a new fan! Thanks for all your time on a Saturday. You are most certainly worth the drive from Ojai!! 7/18/11 ADDITION: Brazilian Blowout lasted about 10-11 weeks and I am SO wanting another one! After hearing the amazing reviews of yelp, I figured I would try it. It is the day before school starts so I wanted it done today. I called asking for Jessica Johnson seeing as she had so many raving reviews but she was full until tomorrow so the lady at the desk recommended Lauren. She was AMAZING! She was super friendly but didn't talk your head off like most hair stylists. She constantly was getting my input on exactly how I wanted it and made sure that the cut she gave me would work on my hair type. She made sure she knew my styling habits, my natural texture, and how I wanted to style it in the future. I'm a pretty selective person. For 7 years, I drove down to the O.C. from Ventura once a month to get my haircut with the same stylist. Then my stylist moved out of state. For a while, I continued my treks to the same salon, but I was never sold on the other stylists. Jessica Johnson is hands down the best hair dresser in the greater Los Angeles area. She's not only a rad hairdresser but she is also just an incredibly sweet and thoughtful person. If she moved and decided to style hair in Los Angeles or Hollywood itself rather than in Thousand Oaks, I can't even imagine how well she would do. What makes Jess J. an amazing hairstylist is that she cuts your hair not only according to what you want done, but she understands how to cut for your specific hair TYPE (i.e. thick, fine, curly, crazy/unmanageable, etc.) and your individual personality. There is no need to bring in a picture when visiting Jess J. - she works with you to figure the best hairstyle for your own unique style. The prices at Salon Rouge are also unbeatable - while I live in Santa Monica now and Thousand Oaks has become quite a trek, it's still completely worth it to head out to Salon Rouge because prices for cuts and colors are so much better than most places in west Los Angeles/Santa Monica. Just had the Brazillian Keratin Hair Straightening treatment at Salon Rouge by AMY KARR ! Wow is all I can say. She turned my nappy frizzy white girl hair into a smooth, silky, supple baby hair! I had it over a month ago, and I can tell you it is still just as smooth. My hair before the treatment is the kind where I had to use a lot of conditioner in the shower, then a lot of product on my wet hair. Then blow dry super straight, then take a flat iron, then more product after the flat iron. Usually taking about an hour of sweating and labor-intense straightening and burning of my fingers. Probably the reason I wore my hair up most days of the week. Now.. it takes me about 10 minutes to do my hair! MY HOME PROCESS: All I do is wash and condition with the keratin shampoo Amy sent me home with as part of the treatment. (it has zero sulfites and has a UV protectant). It's called GLOBAL KERATIN SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER (and it's not expensive at all around $12 each), then blow dry and DONE! No flat iron, no curling iron. And... unlike the Japanese Hair Straightening treatment, that leaves your hair STICK straight and will not take a curl, this Brazilian Global Keratin treatment allows you to put in volume and keep the curl you add. So, if you do want a curl on your ends using a round brush or curling iron WILL WORK. The japanese treatment will not and makes your hair almost look like the end of a broom. I didn't want that... plus the japanese treatment thrashes your hair.. .unlike this treatment... which is a conditioning treatment! 10 minutes! That's all it takes to do my hair in the morning! WOW HOW LONG DID IT TAKE & HOW IT WORKS?: Intially it was 3 hours (continuous) in the chair with dirty dry hair. No under- the- dryer or curing time. She brushes it in like a weave in small sections then hot irons the product in to seal the cuticles in my hair. It smells like a strawberry ice cream sandwich and does smoke a bit! She keeps a fan blowing on you to reduce the steaming. Then you go home with the product still in your hair. It feels gross, like a bunch of oil or conditioner has been left in your hair. You cannot get it wet, you cannot put it up, or even put your hair behind your ears. You must keep it from getting kinked. If it does get wet or you get a small kink after you wake up, you will need to take your own straight iron to it and get the kink or mark out. You want it as straight as possible while the product is in your hair at home. So it's a long 2 days. No hat etc.. so you might want to do it during the week when you can hide in your house. You look like a grease-pit. Then on the second day you go back and get the product washed out and dried with a blow dryer! That's it! Takes about 10 minutes! WOW is all I can say! I will do it all the time now! DAMAGE TO HAIR?: Does this ruin your hair? NO... that is the cool thing. Such great new technology! It's actually a conditioning treatment. It's not a chemical treatment that will ruin or damage your hair. You can do this over and over again and it only helps your hair! What is basically does is shelac and coat the cuticle of your hair with a protein (keratin) and eventually it just sluffs off. It works on all types of hair too! However it works BEST on chemically treated hair, (colored, weaved, permed etc.) It does work on virgin hair, but it might take 2 times to get the best achievement. Colored treated hair has an open cuticle which in turn takes the treatment better. COST: It is a little pricey.. but to me was super duper worth it! I think all the time I spend on trying to get my hair exactly how I like it was well worth the cost. I got an introductory rate, so call Amy to see what the price is now. It will be around $400-$500 and lasts 2-4 months depending on how well you take care of your hair. Using the shampoo and conditioner etc. Sun exposure.... Amy Karr is the only one I know of who does this in the Conejo Valley, Thousand Oaks, Westlake area. She is trained and very knowledgeable in this treatment. My regualar hair stylist isn't doing it yet, but I am sure she will soon. It's amazing!!! I LOVE this salon, and I LOVE Paige! I have been to many different stylists all over the state of California, and I have never been to anyone who is as talented as Paige. In fact, I still travel to Thousand Oaks from San Francisco just to see her for my cut and color! Every time I see Paige, I am left feeling like my hair is bright, multi-dimensional, and exactly as I want it. In order to get the look that I want, I've brought in pictures, and Paige always takes the time to have a conversation about exactly what it is that I like, and what things I don't like. She has the knowledge and experience to tell me just what is possible given my hair texture, length, level of damage, etc. I always leave feeling like I got exactly what I wanted. At one point, she really burned my scalp bad. I called her attention and all she said was " oh its too hot". She did not apologize, knowing I was in pain from the burn.
