This is the horse persons hang out. If you ride from nearby, or from the Gateway trail this is the place to ride to and tie up your horse at their sturdy hitching rail. Don't let their small north parking lot fool you, there is plenty of room for trailers in the back - perhaps not your giant living quarters but anything less should be fine. The food is outstanding and I probably have lunch there once a week. The only thing I avoid is bingo hour. read more

The last time I ate there I thought I had the best burger in the world, but I was wrong. After eating there again today, I realized that NOW I've had the best burger. I am one of those "weird" people who love my burgers rare. Because nobody eats them that way, most cooks have trouble finding that balance needed to cook a rare burger properly. Sal's gets it right every time. My husband's burger was cooked just right at medium. Plus they have a wide variety of toppings you can add to your burger including peanut butter. It's not for me, but if it was, I'd have the option. My burger was topped with pepper jack cheese, onion stacks, & jalapeños, yum! The atmosphere at Sal's is also great, it's warm and inviting and in the summertime they have a great outdoor seating area. If I didn't live so far away, I'd eat here all the time! read more

I had Fathers Day lunch here with my parents and my grandpa. Cozy and friendly atmosphere and the AC was a huge relief from the heat that day. A few of us ordered drinks, which came promptly. Our food, however, took a really long time - just under an hour after we had arrived. I had the walleye finger appetizer, which is more like walleye bites. They were very tasty. Been here many times with spotty service. Tonite takes the cake. We were there at 6pm and were seated right away. Plenty of staff, they all walked by our table multiple times while never asking us if we needed anything. Owner watched us walk in and held the door for us as we walked out and didn't say a thing. Over the past couple years my husband and I have dined at Sal's approximately once a month on Wednesday for the walleye special. Our general experience is that it is "hit or miss". Sometimes the food is not up to par, sometimes the service is substandard. But we have continued to come, hoping for the best. After our last experience we may not bother again. We came with a friend, hoping it would be one of the better nights. It was not. We arrived at around 8 PM, thinking this was not cutting it too close. The service was not the worst ever, but certainly not stellar. The problem seemed to be in the kitchen. Our initial serving of walleye was pretty small. My husband and friend had to get three re-fills; the portions were so small they were joking about getting sunfish fillets. We initially got tartar sauce, but when we requested more were informed that they were out. We were aware the kitchen closed at 9 and did not tarry. Nonetheless, it was 9 PM by the time we left. About 8:45 several waitresses came out and started slamming chairs on the tables throughout the entire room, including the tables right next to ours. Were they in such a hurry to get home they couldn't wait until we were gone? My husband forgot his hat, so we had to return about 9:30 and I noticed one or more waitresses sitting at the bar. I wrote a letter to the owner and got no response. It must be nice that they have so many patrons that they can afford to get rid of a few. read more

Great location for a motorcycle ride, nice atmosphere. Food is ok though a bit overpriced. Went last Monday with a group of motorcyclists. Our group of seven were very disappointed with the rude treatment from our waitress. She took our orders by asking "wadda you want" instead of "what would you like" or "may I help you", it seemed like a bother for her to be polite or even smile. She didn't bring our table any silverware or napkins like she did for other diners and after she spilled some of our drinks on the table she walked away to wait on others, leaving us to find our own napkins to clean up the spill she left. Perhaps she was having a bad day but that doesn't seem like an excuse to be just plain RUDE like she was to us. Our group has been coming here for a few years now, perhaps it's time to find a different restaurant that appreciates customers and has better food. read more

Nothing special, food is just "ok". Burgers are usually overcooked even if you ask for medium. However, Blue cheese is homemade and great with the fries. Pizzas are decent. Good beer selection but not many microbrews. Typical bar food that goes good with beer but nothing special to write home about. For a good burger, I would recommend the haystack at Patriots just 5 miles south. Sorry Sals, just need better food and prep. read more

What a fun and attentive server we had! The food has a unique taste to it; very flavorful! Great cocktails. The atmosphere is laid back but not boring. Love the look of this out-of-the-way place. Perfect outside patio and bar area. Large parking lot, and I love the story about this place and the free spaghetti dinner for certain ride-ins. All of that being said I found only one drawback, timing. No matter how great the food is or how fun the serving staff is, if the timing of the food preparation isn't executed properly the food looses it's appeal. This was the only negative, but it's HUGE. When 2 people are served at the same time and one meal has to be taken back (because it was cold), it takes away from the evening. (This was the only negative we encountered) My meal was promptly correct and returned and our server was so kind as to make sure it was acceptable which I truly appreciated. PS - The portions are substantial so I have enough leftovers to last me 2 days (love that!). read more

There are two reasons to go here IMO- the walleye dinner and prime rib. Prime rib meal is good, good flavor unlike many places around town (unless your going to pay twice the price). Have had it over done once but asked for new piece and was gladly given one with no issues. But without a doubt there best item on menu is the Walleye- specifically the pan seared walleye. Light cornmeal crust. Not overly battered so you can't taste the fish. It's always flaky and delicious. Even at normal price the walleye meal with some garlic mashed potatoes and sweet glazed green beans and delicious tarter sauce can't be beat. Seriously tell me a better tasting walleye dinner in the twin cities for 20$? Wednesday is all you can eat walleye so even better! Service can be hit or miss sometimes but really haven't had a horrible experience all the years I have been going here. Most of the other food is decent though. The restaurant is actually in Withrow, MN - south of Scandia and north of Stillwater. It's a little difficult to find and we went over the train tracks several times! We visited on a Sunday evening about 6pm and found the restaurant to be busy with couples, families and a variety of groups in the bar area. It's a really large restaurant and has been recently remodeled - a lodge type atmosphere. Steaks are a specialty - but Italian options are also delicious. We tried the pork tenderloins and the steak medallions and the spaghetti. We all enjoyed our salads before dinner and tried their specially prepared green beans and loaded baked potatoes. All the meals were tasty - none over cooked and actually my rare beef medallions were quite rare, which is unusual. They had a nice selection of wines by the glass or bottle - enough to keep the four of us happy. We all had to go boxes for the left overs and enjoyed a pleasant night of food and conversation near the fireplace. Our server was friendly and attentive and made sure we were taken care of. If you're up for a little bit of a drive, make the trip out here for a nice meal. read more

We visited Sal's Angus Grill on 2/19/11 with a party of 30 people. The entire experience was wonderful. Our servers were excellent - efficient, friendly, and always smiling. The food was prepared perfectly and several in our party said it was the best meal they'd had in a long time. The ambiance was wonderful - casual and welcoming. The manager, Jeff, is a peach! The food here is very, very good. It is high quality and well prepared. However, the service we have received is very uneven. We go to Sal's for dinner about twice a month. They have really good bread served with honey butter. Although we believe you are supposed to get it every time you eat there, our server has brought it to us twice in our last three visits. I almost always order a salad. The ceasear salad is great! It is served with a Parmesan disc and home made croutons, sometimes. Twice it has arrived without the disc. Once when the restaurant was very busy but once when it wasn't. The Sal's salad is amazing! It comes with phylo wrapped cheese on top. Delicious and unique. This has never been delivered incorrectly. Tonight, my man's meal was great, steak well prepared. He had ordered steak with broiled shrimp, red potatoes, green beans and a side of portabella mushrooms. We were confused when his meal arrived. He had steak and green beans. The mushrooms were absent. He received the mashed potatoes instead of baby reds. Most confusing was the shrimp. They were served on a bed of rice and mixed with a kind of stir-fried coleslaw type veggie dish. It was good but not what we were expecting. Tonight the food was slow but that has never happened before. We ate at the bar. Overall, we like this place a lot. We recommend it wholeheartedly, but confirm what you are getting when you order if you don't like surprises. read more

I've been going to Sal's with my family and friends for over 10 years, mostly on weekends. But this summer some friends of mine invited me to the "free spaghetti Monday" at Sal's... Just order a beverage, and the spaghetti is free, of course it's extra for meatballs and bread, but still a great deal! I really enjoy the "huge" plate of spaghetti, and the atmosphere at Sal's is always friendly! Great way to feed a crew for less, on a Monday night. read more

Took my husband and kids to Sal's for an early Father's Day dinner. Usually we have great service and the food is really good Which is why we keep going back. Unfortunately tonight the service was really slow and the food wasn't up to par. I should have known It was going to be an "off night" when It took nearly 10 minutes just to get our drinks. Generally the bread basket arrives before the meal and it didn't come until we were already eating (according to the waitress, they were making more rolls in the back, but we saw all the other waitresses bringing bread out to their tables) and 4 out of the 5 of us ordered the prime rib and all of us ordered it medium rare. Only my husband's king cut was cooked right. The rest of us (who all ordered princess or queen cut) got meat that was more well done (absolutely no pink left in the meat at all) all in all, it was a disappointing meal tonight and I know from past experience they can do much better. read more

We went to Sal's on New Year's Eve with another couple after hearing about the place from several other couples. We all ordered drinks and were happy with what we ordered. I had a great bloody mary! We were given complimentary rolls with a whipped honey flavored butter. I liked it, but it wasn't as good as some other places we have eaten at. As New Year's Eve fell on a Saturday night, I ordered the prime rib as it was a Saturday night special and I had not had prime rib in quite awhile and was really in th mood for it. It was ok, but not nearly as flavorful as many other places. I chose the coleslaw rather than the potatoes and again, it was ok, but not as creamy as it should have been. There was a choice of green beans or mixed veggies. I chose the green beans and it turned out to be the best part of the meal. My husband and the other male in our party chose to get the ribeye. This type of steak should be tender, and Sal's was not. In fact my husband buried his in the potatoes and just left it. They had both ordered the smashed potatoes, which were decent, but not great. The other female companion had ordered the shrimp special of the night and really liked it. They were doing a good business on New Year's Eve.The service was very poor, even given that it was New Year's Eve, and for the first time in many years, my husband who is a HUGE tipper did not even want to leave the 15%. I made him do so, but was later sorry. It shouldn't have mattered that she was working on New Year's Eve. The bottom line is that she took drink orders and food orders and we had to flag her down for a second round and the bill. We will not go back as the food quality was really not any better than ok and the service was just so poor. This place does not come close to being what Trail's End was, for those of you who were fortunate enough to have eaten there before it burned to the ground. read more

Sal's is the best place to go when you want a relaxed atmosphere, good service, and fantastic food. I have been there several times, and my food has tasted better and better each time. The menu is not only grill food, but also italian dishes. The variety is great, without having to sacrifice the taste of the food. I would definitely recommend it to everyone I know. read more

Located between Hugo and Stillwater this path is off the beaten path. You will find it right across the street from Withrow Ballroom. It was very comfortable inside and the menu had a little bit of everything for lunch. I ordered a BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger. They charged you 50 cents for each additional item you put on it if you did anything besides a plain hamburger so my burger cost about $9.00. Another person I dined with ordered the club sandwich, it looked good and was told it was. If you go for Supper they have a special like all you can fish or prime rib dinner. We tried for a third time on a Sunday afternoon, and again we were disappointed in the food. Turkey dinner is the past ( over four years ago) was served with stuffing ,cranberries etc. We explained this to our clueless waitress , who did not understand we didn't want a hot turkey sandwich, but a turkey dinner. No where on Sal's menu does it state that the turkey dinner is an open face turkey sandwich. Most my meal was hot with the exception of the green beans - yuck nothing worse than biting into cold food ! We had the same experience in the past, cold food. I called back later in the evening & spoke with I presume the manager - he had the nerve to ask me if I was calling the correct place b/c " We have always served our turkey dinner that way." How rude ! When I asked for a soda refill- she said' Oh, is that diet or regular." My husband thought she was rude as well. If you can't remember what your customer's order- a tactfully approach would be the best approach. The loud music was awful. There was a painting class being held in the dining area while diner's were in the same location. Crappy food with a lot of attitude. NO thanks, we will find much better places to spend our money. read more
