While us foodies are always searching for the next amazing meal, we should take the time to remember to support our neighborhood spots as well. The ones that have been a part of the community for decades or even longer. I'm a few blocks down the road from Sal's Bakery on Chalkstone in Providence. I made a side trip there yesterday on my way to work. Got some classic pizza strips, a piece of spinach pesto pizza and an Italian cold cuts calzone. The guy at the counter was super nice and when I told him it was my first time, that I lived nearby, he lit up sharing with me how everything is made in house fresh every day. And I could taste it in every bite. The sauce they make is thick but still maintains some of the bright acidity of the tomato. There's even little bites of tomato bits here and there that made it so good The spinach pesto pizza was a solid option, although I think it would be better warmed a little. Still delicious and decimated by yours truly. Finally the Italian cold cuts calzone was a thing of beauty. The outside was that crispy crunchy exterior but soft interior like good Italian bread. And a good amount of meat, they packed it in this baby! On top of all that, the price is incredible. You can find many places that charge less for such quality items. So if you're in my neighborhood, make sure to check it out! They have TWO parking lots, in the front to the left and in the back. Even with all the snow they had plenty of parking for customers. Rounding up to five stars due to the whole experience. We loved the local flavor and experiencing the regional bakery pizza. The hospitality was down to earth and the neighborhood vibe resonated deeply. We felt like a local but were 1200 miles from home. The spinach pesto was very flavorful and the "plain" strips were satisfying. The cool temperature was just ok and not our favorite but we'll give that a pass due to the nature of the dish. 1st time to Sal's as a life long Rhode Island resident, I've always frequent Federal Hill or Cranston RI. The hospitality & the conversation was amazing from the minute I walked in the door until I walked out. It's a very small quaint place with 1 booth that I saw and lots of pizza boxes ( if that doesn't show u something) reminds me of old time family place , not to mention there're not to many around anymore). The calzone's were stuffed with plenty of ingredients, I will for sure order a large calzone so I have plenty of leftovers. I am so disappointed in Sal's Bakery. I've been going there for almost 50 years. First time I had a bad experience in everything I bought. Starting with the pizza strips. They used to be so tasteful. Now it seems as they try to cut corners baking the dough ahead of time. I find that disgusting. The dough comes out like cardboard. The spinach pie was awful! Then I took to the zepoles, as I bought them there many times before. The cream was completely lumpy!!! Disgusting!! I bought one for a friend at work as I was telling her how good they are. Well now I will have to go the The Original Italian Bakery to purchase one for her so she can see how they should be done. read more

This was a childhood neighborhood staple for me. And as an adult, I love this bakery. My family always gets their loaf of bread for the holidays. I also believe they have the best RI pizza slices in the area! Not to mention their Calazones and baked good are delicious. So we have been in Florida for 16 years and still know that Sal's has the best bakery pizza ever! When my sister visited us this year, she was asked to bring us Sals. My husband guarded that pizza box like it was his first born. The sauce is perfect along with that delicious crust. I did however get to sneak a piece when he fell asleep. I love Sal's. I love everything about this little neighbourhood bakery. These are the only pizza strips I buy. I bring them to every gathering I go to in Boston and I instantly become the star of the show. (get them cut party size!) the sauce is perfectly spiced and the bread is yummy. Highly suggest ordering the meatball calzone and the salami, provolone, and hot pepper calzone. The best part of this entire experience was the sweet older gentleman who answered the phone and took my order. This is my favorite place to get pizza strips! I've tried pizza strips from many different bakeries, but feel that Sal's truly makes it the best! Their tomato sauce has a nice, sweet, and flavorful taste that's super delicious. I don't eat cheese so I always call ahead to order my pizza strips since the ones they sell individually have cheese on top. When I used to eat cheese, I also really loved their white pizza strips. Today, we drove from East Hampton, Connecticut to Sal's Bakery in Providence, RI to buy their red large party pizzas. Each pizza is cut up into 60 squares, and we travel that far about once a year to buy 3 of them. We make a stop at our son and daughter's homes on the way back to CT to drop off a great big party pizza for each. It is our traditional day trip for all of us. Yes, it is that good! Our son and daughter-in-law found out about this Bakery years ago when they lived in RI and we have been going there ever since. It is absolutely the best. We love it cold, but you can certainly heat it up if you rather have hot pizza. We stuff ourselves with the pizza and then freeze the rest and enjoy it for weeks afterward. They also have amazing calzones: meatball, chicken parm, ham/cheese/pepperoni, eggplant parm, etc.! They are always really good! This place is great! I'm mad it's taken me so long to come here. Definitely old school, no frills bakery. Mostly all bread, rolls, pizza strips, and calzones from what I saw. I got a bunch of red strips and figured I'd try a white. Also got a steak n cheese calzone with onions and peppers and Italian with hot peppers. The pizza strips were great. Kind of crunchy on the bottom with a ton of sauce. Dry pizza strips suck. The white was amazing too. Very garlicky and flavorful with roasted red peppers and onion. Will def get that again! Calzones were great too. They were like $6 each which is a steal. I recently ordered a calzone from a local pizza joint and it was around $16, and it sucked. Could have had THREE from Sal's and they would have been a million times better. Both calzones rocked. They hot peppers made it. Right balance of vinegar and spicy. As soon as you get over the feeling that someone could very well get whacked, it is a terrific Italian bakery, in the old Providence neighborhood sense. Maybe it is the way the three or so cafe tables are staged or the prominent featuring of wood-paneled walls, but there is still something about this place that forces my imagination to wander. I envision taking my hypothetical vows of omertà here, only to be surprised seconds later with a single, silencer-aided shot to my dome because someone finally found out about what I did to Billy Batts. I want my friends to receive this news at a pay phone and slam the receiver multiple times before their face gets all squishy and they well up with tears. I should note that Sal's is nothing like the above fantasy described. It is a safe, honest, family-run business that knows how to bring it. The bread here is slamming. Crusty, with a hint of olive oil. I am always in for a treat when I head to my ma's for Sunday dinner and see their unpretentiously, non-descript bag filled with hearty slices. Several years ago, after a long night of drinking on the biggest party night of the year, Thanksgiving eve, myself and two friends found ourselves looking for some grub around 3:00 a.m. My more resourceful buddy suggested we drive by Sal's. What? We parked in the back and found the rear door propped open just about 3 inches. "Hey amigo!", my bold friend bellowed in. The kitchen door opened and we were greeted by a friendly, diminutively-statured baker who invited us inside. This is all true. If you have never been inside a bakery's kitchen, while they are readying for a busy day like Thanksgiving, let me just say, you're missing a show. The air was heavy, dense really, created by an atmosphere of high oven temperatures and all purpose flour, which floated through the tiny space in thick clouds. No less than a baker's dozen of, what I would have to assume were undocumented workers from Central America, zipped through the kitchen with absolute purpose. The cooling racks were packed-full with loaves and rolls from the average to the well done. We walked away that morning with red and white pizza strips, spinach pies and I even managed to grab a pastry - perhaps it was sfoongadele (sfogliatelle) - definitely something custard-filled. Total damage, about five bucks for all three of us. A few short hours later, after the alcohol had been absorbed by the doughy, carb-overload of our score, I could hardly contain myself. I was eager to share this story with my family, before we celebrated our day of two gravies (red and brown). Yes, we have pasta on Thanksgiving Day and that means Sal's (or Buono's or Crugnale's) bread to soak up the remnants of my aunt's gravy. Understand that this is not my attempt to put this place down or have it closed for violations - these events took place a long time ago. The fact remains, for delicious, authentic Italian specialities, Sal's on Chalkstone is a perfectly charming bakery that boasts some of the finest bread in the city - now go get ya effin' shine box. read more
