I have been a customer of LaSalle Bakery for as long as I can remember, I grew up around the corner, walked there every Sunday for bread. Now I do not live in RI anymore but every time I come home we stop into LaSalle for some great flavors and it brings back memories. But what has happened???? Went in on Saturday 12/6, not too busy for a Saturday we waited patiently for someone to help us. My wife grabbed her Italian cookie package, wine biscuits only white wine no red, BTW they were hard as a rock old, egg biscuits with yellow frosting when it used to be white, they were dry dry dry. Onto the Italian cookie package, they were either hard or dry, no flavor at all. Now I hear there is new owners, this is a surprise but explains the service or lack there of and maybe the quality. It's a shame that a lifelong customer like myself will not be coming back when I'm in town. read more

What a sweet little experience this was! With short notice, I needed a cake with a custom message on it. I called LaSalle Bakery first to ask if they had blank cakes & the ability to customize them quickly & they said yes. So I headed over to LaSalle on Smith Street. When I arrived (at around 2 PM) it was so busy! The line was long, the tables were full, & it was very noisy. The staff seemed very young to me, but they were working with such professionalism & efficiency, it made them appear older. When I reached the front of the line, the young man talked me through the cake options very kindly & thoroughly, not allowing the potential stress of the long line behind me get to him. The cake options were varied & fun. The difference between a medium cake & a large cake was only a matter of $5 ($45 vs. $50) so I of course opted for the larger cake. It provided more room for the message I wanted to request, also. A different staff member took my cake to the back to customize it. I caught glimpses of her hard at work from where I stood waiting. It took her about 5-8 minutes to customize the cake, & when she returned, I was so impressed with her handiwork. She squeezed a very long message into a relatively small space & the script was still beautiful! I couldn't eat the cake because I'm gluten intolerant, LOL! But it was a great hit at my party & the people that I shouted out in the writing on top were thrilled with the result. I would definitely return for a customized cake again in the future. read more

I love visiting LaSalle Bakery for my Banana Hazelnut Iced Coffee and Danish! It is always a go-to when I'm in the area. The store is small, but has a few small bistro tables and a bar area in the window. It can get pretty packed on the weekends depending on what time you go and if it's around a holiday. I think the cakes are beautiful and tasty. Great selection of individual pastries. Everything is fresh! I love that they have little sandwiches, calzones, pizza, and bread. I've never written a negative review before, and it pains me to write this one. I've been coming to this bakery for 10 years, and my wife and her family have been loyal customers for over 30 years. Unfortunately, this is no longer the same bakery we fell in love with. I understand times have been tough for many businesses, but ever since the ownership changed both the quality of the products and the service have steadily declined. The bread, once the highlight of the bakery, has become disappointing. The mini Italian loaves now resemble oversized baguettes, and the large Sicilian loaves -- which cost $8 -- often have giant holes running through the middle because the dough wasn't properly punched down. That's if you're even lucky enough to find a large Sicilian loaf in stock when you visit, often sold out before 12. I don't mind paying a little more to support local businesses and get quality food. But I can't justify the prices anymore given the customer service I've experienced over the past six months. The staff often seem irritated that customers are even there. Small touches that used to be standard, like oil and vinegar on sandwiches, are gone. And heaven forbid you ask them to cut your bread or sandwich -- you'll get a glare that makes you feel unwelcome. This isn't just from one experience which is why I feel the need to write the review. Today was the final straw. My wife and I went in, as we often do two or three times a week, planning to buy loaves of bread, a sandwich, and some pastries. There were only two other customers in the store, yet it took the young woman behind the counter on Smith Street a ridiculous amount of time to cut our bread and prepare our order. When we politely asked for a bag to carry our many items, she glared at us and THREW the bag on the counter and walked away clearly annoyed. My wife was taken aback by how unpleasant she was throughout the entire transaction. Clearly bothered that she had customers to help. I've tried both locations recently, hoping it might just be an issue with one store, but sadly the poor service and declining quality are consistent. After seeing how far things have gone downhill, I can no longer support this business. I hope the owners consider retraining their staff as we have heard from other customers they feel similarly. For now, I'll be going to other small bakeries in the city -- even if it means driving instead of walking. The bakery we once loved is simply not the same anymore. I hope the owners realize how much they're losing by letting their service decline this way. read more

Used to be so much better. Lately, the wait is really long. They seem understaffed and when there are two-three people in front of you, it seems like you're waiting half an hour. This is especially true if someone has a drink order or needs a sandwich heated up. Prices have also gone up. I was shocked, this morning, to find out that a butter croissant costs $5.50! (or something close to that). I realize that prices have gone up everywhere but over $5 for a croissant seems out of proportion. Won't buy them anymore. The French Italian rolls, my other reason for going to LaSalle, are only available on the weekend. They have gotten smaller and cost more. So, will also no longer go there to buy tiny bread rolls. I kept getting put on hold and shouffled to someone else who was no help. Finally someone called me back after multiple phone calls. When I said I changed my mind because of this awful service, and I ordered with another Bakery the woman acted like she couldn't care less and abruptly hung up. Please someone tell me why they're is a puff of ricotta in each end and empty in the middle? For about $5 a Cannoli it's a ripoff. I suggest The Bread Boss, or Borrellis, market basket or literally anywhere else if you want a whole cannoli. They should be ashamed to sell these. My Italian heart broke when I got the the middle. Called up and asked if they could do a dinosaur cake for my son's 2nd birthday party. The woman on the phone was amazing to deal with and genuinely seemed excited when she told us "oh yeah we can do a dinosaur cake!" We were so excited to see it and they sure did deliver. The food is delicious and the coffee is great, but unfortunately the speed of the service is so dramatically slow that anybody stopping in on their morning drive to work or on their lunch break simply will not have enough time to enjoy their food. They should consider hiring more staff or having support workers in the oven area so that it doesn't delay the line every time a customer orders something that needs to be toasted or heated. read more

I was super excited to buy a Mardi Gras king cake at Lasalle Bakery. Having purchased other baked goods from here, I was always happy. However, despite the pretty festive decorations on this "so called" cake, it was horrible! It was not a cake but a frosted stale cheese strawberry danish ring with Mardi Gras decorations. I go here all the time and always get a spinach cheese calzone with a side red sauce. Today they said they don't know where they keep it. Neither of the 2 staff would even go the fridge to check or find it. I asked them both for sauce, I don't understand why they couldn't at least look for me. LaSalle is one of my favorite bakeries in the state. Sunday mornings I usually stop at another bakery first nearby then come here for other items I can't find at the other bakery. LaSalle also makes a heck of a carrot cake (which for the record I really dislike carrot cake, but my girlfriend loves it) and she swears by it. Lines here move very quick. I've had several parties and I always order my cakes or pastries here. The people who work here are extra friendly and the prices are wonderful. read more

I am really enjoying being so close to LaSalle bakery these days! We stopped in yesterday for a coffee and some pizza chips, and a slice of pepperoni for the kid. The wait is always quick, they move fast. I really enjoy the Italian grinder and also the spinach croissant (seven stars used to make one and I loved it so I was pumped to find one here, and it was amazing). Most of the staff is friendly and energetic - although sometimes I'm thinking to myself that they would prefer to not be working. I have days like that too though. The pizza chips were decent - I like the crisp edges a lot. I can be a brat about my coffee - but I also can enjoy a dunkin every once in a while. I don't hate the LaSalle coffee, I would pick it over some of the other available options in my area. In fact I really enjoy the ice coffee black and down a large in no time. read more

Extremely disappointed in BOTH locations of LaSalle Bakery. I went to the Admiral Street location on a Monday to order a cake for Saturday of the same week. Apparently only ONE person can do these orders. They suggested I call this person, which I proceeded to do. Three times. Could not reach this person, and it was suggested I come in person. I did. Same song and dance. So I went to the Smith Street location. The young kids working there were very nice, but I received the same info. Call the cake person. It is now Thursday and I have not been able to get a damn simple sheet cake ordered. So guess what I did? I went to Shaw's! Yep, their bakery was very accommodating and will have my cake ready Saturday morning. Moral? If you make it too difficult to use your services, customers will go elsewhere! Boo! read more
