We both ordered salads, which typically come with the dressing on the side; however, today, they were drowned in dressing to hide the fact that there wasn't ANY feta cheese on the salads. I asked our waitress if they were out of feta, she said no but we're supposed to use it sparingly; I'm sorry, but if it's listed as an ingredient in a salad, I want it in my salad, not used to decorate the plate! Got a recommendation while we were in downtown Indianapolis to drive out for dinner We were so surprised to find out this great little gem. Our server was Emma and she did a great job. The home made fresh bread was hot and the oil is seasoned just right. We had an order garlic knots with the marinara as recommended by our server and she was spot on! The spinach lasagna was amazing! This restaurant clearly does not read their reviews. The wood fired pizza much better than the oven but you have to request the wood fire oven. Too much ricotta cheeses on the pizza it's supposed to be a topping not the sauce. The side salad is the same size which comes with one if there gourmet meals. That's wrong.. Food was ok but prices are not honest. The menu states that prices may be different because of economy but when ordering was never told that every item is different than what was listed. Bill was $7 more than listed. They charged $4 for woodfire pizza that was like warm when served. $1 more for each beer and $1 more the cheese knots. Complained and the response was to show me the menu with the disclaimer that prices may be different because of the economy which also happened to be misspelled. We were seated immediately & given bread & oil. However, we were not acknowledged beyond that. Our family sat, watching other patrons who arrived after us be served, being completely ignored. This occurred for over 30 minutes and we were not even given so much as a water. There were more than enough servers for the number of people at the restaurant and they were less than apologetic when we ultimately walked out without ever being spoken to. All I can say is that the profit margin on the Caprese Pizza, must be astronomical !!! $27 (w/convenience fee and tax) gets you a massive 16" crust, an medium unripe tomato, 8 slices of mozzarella, and a few sprinkles of fresh basil. As you can see, the piece at the 7 o'clock position is almost completely free of toppings !!! It's basically an oversized, over priced cracker. Was very disappointed in the service, you would think after having to ask for extra napkins, the bread and olive oil table service, we'd at least get a refill on our drinks without asking-not going to happen. Top it off, my in laws lasagna was burnt at the bottom, not singed around the top, but dehydrated burnt cheese and noodles. Was there an apology? Did we see a manager? Sal's always has amazing food that never disappoints. The hospitality and service is not as good anymore though. This location is always understaffed it seems, usually only having two servers for the whole restaurant. Their outdoor seating has been closed when we go because of this (which is completely understandable, I wouldn't want to be running back and forth either) but I am unsure of the lack of servers. It seems like a hiring or scheduling issue that could be resolved. In our experience tonight we could tell our server was overwhelmed and struggling. She was taking care of half the restaurant. She didn't bring us the complimentary bread or check on us, so after 15-20 minutes or so I went up to her to ask for some. When she took our order, we asked for a large pizza split with a sals signature and a pepperoni & sausage. We had to repeat our order several times to clarify what we wanted. Not really a big deal but this is something we've ordered before and the server seemed confused or overwhelmed by it? I think once again it was just a point of being exhausted maybe. The food was great and we were checked on afterwards during our meal more which we appreciated. I know the pandemic has hit restaurants especially hard and I'm hoping that over time these issues will be resolved as we go back to normalcy. I've been to the other locations of Sal's and not had these issues, but we come to this one because it had always been our favorite. I think your servers are taking on large loads of customers, something I wouldn't even want as someone experienced in food service myself. Family outing with my granddaughter that's in town. Good atmosphere with good lighting and music is awesome. Our waitress was very friendly and spot on. Now on to the food. Didn't like the bread much, almost tasted like it was stale and the oil to dip it in was bland. The Italian dressing for the salad tasted watered down. The bread sticks and cheese was good. I had never been to Sal's even though I've driven past it for years. They now have three locations in Plainfield, Brownsburg and Mooresville. We went to lunch today at the Plainfield location. Lunch is a reduced menu and the full dinner menu is available from 4-10 p.m. The lunch menu prices are very reasonable from Spaghetti Campanola at 5.95 to Vegetarian Calzone at 6.99 being the priciest on the lunch menu with the exception of pizzas. We both ordered the Baked Ziti and Garlic Rolls at the recommendation of a customer dining next to us. The Ziti was baked with a red sauce, ricotta and mozzarella cheese as you would expect. I personally had to add a decent amount of crushed red peppers as I thought it was rather bland. My sister-in-law did not. Of course this isn't unusual for me since I prefer spicy food. It was good, a decent lunch portion and reasonably priced at 6.75. We both agreed we would order again. For me the Garlic Rolls were the highlight of lunch. Four rolls made of homemade pizza dough with garlic, oregano, parmesan and mozzarella cheese rolled inside the knot. These with a salad will be my next lunch here. They are very filling, cheesy and yummy and perfect for sharing. The restaurant has been remodeled and has low lighting, comfortable seating with prompt and excellent service. I usually love Sal's but tonight I feel let down. The woodfired Caprese was thoughtless and tasteless. It did not resemble the photo of the caprese pizza on the website. Normally, I don't give bad reviews but I am hoping the folks at Sal's see this so that they can do better. I do not believe that the pizza was cooked in the wood oven or maybe the oven wasn't hot enough because the whole pizza was softer than it should have been. Maybe we ordered too late (after 8) but they are open until 10. The pizza didn't have that crisp underside that Sal's woodfired has had in the past or that King Dough or any other pizza joint with a woodfired oven always has. This pizza really counts on the "flavor" of the five simple toppings (tomato, basil, fresh mozzarella, garlic, olive oil). Unfortunately, our pizza had no garlic (zero), the equivalent of two very finely shredded leaves of basil (not enough for a 16" pizza), the tomato lacked flavor (maybe it is the season), and... by placing the mozzarella right on top of the tomato and leaving big spaces in between of naked bread crust, the mozzarella never really cooked and the dough under the tomato was a bit raw. It was basically a bread pizza with eight polka dots made up of rawish dough topped by tomato slices, each topped with a slice of mozzerella. It wasn't right. If you look at the online photo on the website, this pizza bears almost no resemblance . My guy called it the saddest pizza he has ever seen. I didn't go that far but damn, it is close. We also ordered a cheese calzone, which had good flavor but the dough seemed over-proofed. I used to work pizza way back when and know things. The calzone was really soft. Does Sal still own this location or have any affiliation with this restaurant? I cannot believe that after dealing with Sal for as many years as I have that if he had any hand in this business at all anymore he would allow such inferior product to go out the door. I have been a customer and ardent supporter of this business for close to 30 years now. They used to be one of the best pizza places in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas. I used to recommend them to anyone looking for a great pie at a fair price. We used to frequent his original location in Danville when they first opened. When he sold his Danville location and opened the Plainfield location we were regular customers as we had also moved to Plainfield and on rare occasions would go to the Brownsburg location. I believe the Brownsburg location continued to be Sals home restaurant as the quality there seemed to remain high and Sal always seemed to be there. Over the last few years the quality of pizza at the Plainfield location has continually gone down and the prices have gone up. I really wouldn't even mind the price if the pizza was anywhere near as good as it once was but unfortunately that is no longer the case and has not been for a while. Maybe they are so focused on the cuisine now that they no longer care about their carry out pizzas. If that is the case take pizzeria out of the name. I understand that anywhere can have a subpar night but this is the fourth bad pizza in a row and the absolute worst of the four. We specifically ordered extra cheese because they have gotten so sparse with their normal amount of cheese it was almost pitiful. Even with the extra cheese charge the pie was still lacking in what would be considered normal coverage for a pizza. The crust was super thin and flakey with the edge of the pie being so thin it was pitiful. Toppings were sparse and some were even the inedible top parts of the pepper with the stem. Who puts that on a pizza and thinks that is OK. Not sure if this is post Covid, labor issues, management, or ownership change but it is sad to see what was once my favorite pizza place putting out such bad product. I am an ardent supporter of local businesses, especially during this time, but I'll never return to Sal's in Plainfield. As another Yelp reviewer stated, the service on 4/17/20 was beyond terrible. When I arrived, there were three other people in the waiting area. When I left, there were at least 15. We all tried to distance ourselves appropriately, but that became difficult since the cashiers were much more concerned about answering the phones than packaging up orders and cashing out customers. As it turns out, the distancing probably didn't matter anyway, as NONE of the kitchen staff NOR the cashiers were wearing gloves or masks. This infuriated me to the point that when it was my turn to pay for my order, I asked the cashier why no one was using the disposable gloves THAT WERE SITTING ON THE COUNTER. She looked around and said "well, I'm not touching any of the food." (No, just the phone, the cash register, the cash and credit cards of every customer...) The woman making pizzas pounded out dough and dug right into the containers of cheese and other toppings without washing her hands or using the hand sanitizer that, like the gloves, was sitting right on the counter. I understand that thanks to the stimulus checks, more people are ordering takeout and delivery this week. I also understand that it's challenging to predict the number of employees needed on the schedule during this unprecedented time. It wasn't the 25 minutes I waited to pay for my food that I minded. What I do mind is the utter lack of basic sanitary practices and lack of concern expressed by the employees.
