I am vegetarian and Sal's Mexican food was awesome. Very tasty and freshly cooked. Their salsa is on of the best salsa I have eaten.

Our family met up in Madera and we chose Sal's based on a recommendation from a friend for lunch. There were 11 of us and we were all more than pleased. The food arrived all at the same time and was delicious. The portion size is amazing. I had the steak fajitas. The meat was so tender! My husband loved his chimichanga - I thought he was going to lick his plate. Haha. Wish we lived closer so I could enjoy it more often. Sorry we were so loud. read more

This restaurant from my opinion, shouldn't be called a Mexican Restaurant. The food has absolutely no flavor at all, very bland. I ordered chicken tortilla soup and they literally gave me chicken broth with crushed up corn chips. Awful food. I don't understand how they have been in business so long, maybe it's because it's the only club in Madera??? I have tasted several dishes at this location because I wanted to give it a few more chances but every dish I have tried lacked any type of flavor. read more

Wow. Our drive from Los Angeles to our home in Rocklin we found ourselves wanting lunch. When I searched Mexican Restaurants along our path Sal's popped up. A small spot in the shopping strip passed the WalMart store. What a delightful place! The staff was so friendly and welcoming. Service was quick and responsive. The salsa ... excellent. Enough bite to make it perfect for our spice sealing appetites. We had seconds even. The chips are made in house and were SO good and not one of the two baskets we enjoyed were old, cold or chewy. Our meal choice was the carne asada chimichanga. My husband had red sauce on his, I chose without. Both were delicious in flavor. The meat was very good. Not one bite of fat at all! the flavor was perfect. For someone with a lighter appetite- this dish can be shared with satisfying results. The noise level was perfect. We didn't feel the need to raise our voices to hear one another and we didn't find the surrounding table conversations to be intrusive. It is a real shame we live 163 miles from this establishment. I envy those who get the opportunity to dine here more often. read more

A waste of money and time. Save yourself the trip and stop at a good taqueria, because Sal's has gone down hill. The quality and quantity of their food is poor. The service is poor, no follow up or refills. I ordered the Fancy chili verde burrito and it was simply a wet tortilla . The tortilla had very runny beans, the chili verde was absent of meat. This is one of our favorite places to eat, but with the covid crap it has been a bit of a problem. First it takes like 20 rings before they answer the phone & then to top that off they ask you to hold for a moment. Since when is 15 minutes a moment! But after that it hangs up on you. Me and my boyfriend were craving authentic Mexican food and we found Sal' s Mexican resturant and we couldn't have picked a better place to eat. I got the menudo which came with lots of meat which doesn't happen a lot in restaurants and the burrito was to die for. read more

This is likely the least desirable and most unhealthy Restaurant in central California, very seldom do we leave derogatory feedback regarding businesses and restaurants but unfortunately with this place it is not the case-in the voice of integrity, honesty is always the best policy. Perhaps it would be in the best interest of their customers to provide comprehensive and complete contents of the food they serve including oil and fat content as well. Although certainly not intentional on their part they are making their competition welcoming and more than appealing to say the least. read more

This place is mediocre. I eat here once every couple of months. Today I've ordered nachos to go and they said they don't include salsa. I got charged over $3. If you eat at the restaurant they give you all the salsa you can eat for free. I don't like that they charge for this. I will never order to go again because the salsa is the best thing they carry at this restaurant. read more

Went for dinner, 45min later my food hasn't arrived. I asked the waiter on the status of the food. He went to check on it and somehow my order was never processed. He said it was gonna be 30 more minutes. It wasn't even busy. The cooks where too busy chatting instead of cooking. I left and ate elsewhere. read more

Not bad at all. Been going here for years. The only thing that i don't like is alot of the plates i have found to be chipped, which can be sanitary issue. The food is always really good, just kinda hot. Luckily, i am always going there with friends so we tend to talk alot and it gives the food a chance to cool down. Wonderful service, wonderful food! I stopped in here on a business trip. It was crowded but I was quickly seated at a large table in the back. Hey, I didn't need a booth, so I was happy to get a nice large table to myself even if it was next to the hustle and bustle of the kitchen. Despite the rush and flood of customers at lunch time, the staff didn't give me as much as a glare about taking an entire table to myself. I was able to relax and pull out my laptop after a long day on the road. Arrived to have dinner at 7:30pm on a Sunday evening. Lots of staff in kitchen and minimal customers in restaurant. You could reasonably expect prompt service given the scenario. Ordered two simple tacos and a bowl of cocido. Waited over a half an hour to get food. Waitress didn't return to see if refills were needed or anything else for that matter until food arrived. Waited another half an hour to get bill. Had to then get up and find out where bill was with change. Not sure what's going on with Sal's tonight but very slow service and not at all attentive. Ok, so I have a lot of love for this place since I was born and raised in Madera. The food is consistently good, but I have noticed a slight downward trend over the past couple years. Having lived in the northeast for a while, I appreciate their food. The rice and salsa are both excellent. Crazy Bernie is a huge fan of Sals in Selma and have been for over 30 years. When I fly out of the country from LAX I always make my last meal in the USA Sal's. Its always great to see Karl and Lorraine. The same top notch food and service I've come to expect is here in Madera too! The best chile con carne fancy burritos on the planet folks! You know what I can't stand? Going to a restaurant and ordering different things off the menu to which the waiter replys, "Are you sure? That's a lot of food!" When does it make sense for a waiter to talk a customer out of a sale? How are these people trained? I can already imagine during orientation, "If a fat ass wants more than one item on the menu, make them feel guilty and talk them out of it. We can't afford to make too much money." Seriously?!? Anyway, the food was ok. Nachos were VERY bland. The only thing I would recommend is the famous burrito. Other than that, I prefer El Amigo or Luisitos. The food is quite good, but the takeout service is the problem. Over the past 2-3 years, I've had 6 or 7 incidents where the order was incomplete or just plain wrong. I've spoken to the manager twice and he was very apologetic, but the service did not improve. Finally I stopped going for a whole year, then decided to try it again, because, well, the food is really good. Three weeks ago the order was again incomplete. My wife called to complain, so they refunded our price (although we already had taken the food home). Then, last Friday (June 5, 2009), I picked up a take-out order and just as I walked in the door at home, Sal's called and said they gave me the wrong order. I went back to get my order and they offered to let me keep the one they had given me in error as well (which I declined). My order was cold. Again they apologized profusely, but I have had enough. I told them I will never be back. And I never will. I don't quite understand the problem. Either management doesn't care, or they are hiring minimum wage kids who don't care. Whatever the reason, they have had ample opportunity to correct the problem and have not done so. They've lost this customer for life. read more

This place was a stop on during a trip back to Long Beach from a weekend in Sacramento. One would think that living in the Greater Los Angeles area that their would be phenomenal authentic Mexican food around-not so. My husband and I always eat Mexican food when we go to Sacramento because otherwise we get Chipotle or something to that nature because there's nothing around us that we consider good. Well this place is worth the pit stop when driving 99 thru the central valley. It is fantastic! I remember I got the Enchilada Suizas and my husband got their Chile Verde. We both looked up at each other after our first bites and were like "WOW!" When we left we both said we had to remember where this place was and their name so we could stop there again. $40 or under I want to say. The service was 5 star on attentiveness and friendliness. My husband and I are foodies but didn't feel appropriately dressed for madera's local organic restaurant after spending the day at Yosemite. Guacamole and fajitas were simple but fresh and flavorful. After my annoying request for a modified less sweet margarita they brought a delicious cocktail I'd love to be able to recreate at home. I added a pint of their salsa to our bill even though we still have a few hours in the car before arriving home...I'll be eating it with a spoon tomorrow-amazing! Madera has a very large Mexican population, so it would seem to reason that you can find many good Mexican Restaurants. Without question Sal's in Madera is one of them. What Sal's offers is very professional service with an emphasis on customer service. Everyone from the hostess to that table staff. On this occasion we had Marbella serve us. The place was packed (15 minute wait for a party of 2), but our services was exceptional. Our food is always top shelf and the famous Sal's salsa doesn't last long. We stop at Sal's coming and going from Los Angeles to the Bay Area several times each year. We love the food and the portions are large enough for leftovers when we get home. The service staff is always friendly, even when the place is jammed packed with customers seated, customers waiting, and people in line to pick up catering orders. read more
