Since I work at a school and had a break, I decided to try this spot with the dude and Kenny on his lunch break and I'm really glad we did. The staff was welcoming, kind, and genuinely warm from the start. As a vegetarian, the food was DELICIOUS. I ordered a mushroom dish that was resembled like a quesadilla but way more elevated. Flavorful, rich, and done right. You can tell the owner and staff take real PRIDE in their food. Everything tasted authentic, homemade, and thoughtfully prepared. No shortcuts, just quality. Right on the corner of Gateway and fourth Street Walking distance from City Hall and from Madera Ford if you're truck is being serviced :-) The food here has always been excellent... The burritos, huevos à la Mexicana, Agua Fresca, to the handmade tortillas... And don't forget their Horchata! Excellent food for pick up, and great service at the tables as well This is a top spot in Madera for sure And to top it off they are actually open for breakfast! Nestled in what I remember as the old Taco Bell building, El Epazote sets themselves apart from all Mexican restaurants I've been to in the area. I must admit, I order the same thing usually because I crave the taquitos and one of their agua frescas. With tasty flavors that are simple yet somehow new and exciting. They put their own touch on Mexican fare and they do it well. Their black beans--so delicious...And you might be thinking, "how good can black beans be?", try them, you'll understand. Same for the Taquitos Dorados, simple, fresh and obviously made with pride and love. The owner and staff care about their customers and their product, as I was checked on various times throughout my meal to see if I needed anything and how my meal was, but they already knew the answer to the question--It's that good. What a surprise to find a Oaxacan restaurant on our way home from Los Angeles to Sacramento in of all places, Madera! It turns out Madera has a vibrant Oaxacan community! I had their Huiltlacoche quesadilla and my wife had their chicken mole tamales. The Quesadilla was exactly as I had in Oaxaca with fresh huitlacoche, Oaxacan cheese and fresh epazote. There was side of refried black beans that had a sweet hint of Hoja Santa. My wife's tamales were steamed in banana leaves which I prefer to steamed in corn husks. The mole tasted like the moles I've had in Oaxaca. There was a Mexican family next to us and the father had a huge tlayuda that must have been at least 16" in diameter! His wife had a bowl of seafood soup that looked great! One kid had the quesabirria tacos, which also looked very tasty. If you're passing through Madera, don't miss it! read more

On the way down to Central CA, our car found this spot and decided to try it based on the high reviews on Yelp, and we are glad that we did! It's a pretty small place, but we were pretty impressed with the food selection, as it had dishes some of which I had never heard of. I ordered the Tlayudita with asada, and what my colleague explained was pretty spot-on - it was like a Mexican pizza. Crispy tortilla bottom and a smooth bean spread with a good mix of cheese, cabbage, and tomato on top. Protip: don't bother using a fork and knife, just break off the pieces with your hand! The servers were also very kind, and we chatted on our way out. I'd definitely come back again to try some of the different foods that they have! read more

4.5 This was Maria's Taco Shop in its past life but a Taco Bell (one of the original designs) originally! The first thing you notice about this place is it's CLEAN!! The food here is excellent and if you're looking for something that is not your traditional "Americanized" Mexican food. We ordered the guacamole (it comes with cheese on top) and it is fresh! Then we had the mains: Caldo de Mariscos that was served Hot and had prawns, red snapper, clams, mussels, mixed vegetables and comes with homemade corn tortillas. Also had Mole Negro and the mole was very flavorful. Ordered a Ajua Fresca (watermelon) to drink and it was Fresh with chunks of fresh watermelon! I found Tomas and this amazing restaurant through yelp. I was looking for a good place to order some trays of food to be delivered to a local prison. We aren't allowed metal, or glass, and Tomas responded that he was able to do this and today was the event. The food arrived on time, packed correctly with a cambro to keep the food hot for the 90 minutes before it was served. They sent a cambro and a cooler for the 200 tortillas we ordered. Seventy people enjoyed carnitas, beans, rice and carne asada, tortillas, salad, salsas, onions, cilantro, radishes, limes, and sour cream. Many of the incarcerated women told us it was the best food they had had in 20 - 30 years. We can't thank Tomas enough! Everything was fresh, delicious and hot when we served it, 90 minutes after it arrived. I am looking forward to going to the restaurant! read more

Wow! I was blown away. My friend and I pulled in, expecting to order a beer and a burrito. What we found was a an excellent and diverse menu of Oaxacan dishes made with delicious ingredients. The homemade tortillas were especially good. I had a tlayuda, traditional Oaxacan street food made with a large, thin, crispy corn tortilla, and layered with beans, cheese, meat, and vegetables. Fantastic! My friend had a mushroom quesadilla that looked amazing and, he claimed, was even better than it looked! We finished our meal with the best bunuelos I've ever had: a sugary-cinnamony pastry, crispy and fresh. Our server was quick, attentive and happy to answer our questions about the food.
