This place is roach infested. If you spend 30 minutes inside no doubt that you'll see roaches crawling. I was literally served a Parmesan cheese dispenser with 5-6 roaches inside and could not believe it. No refund or anything I was simply asked if I had used it yet. I'm a really Italian from New Jersey and I've lived in Va Beach for 35 years because I was married to a military man. I discovered SALS PIZZA on South independence about 10 years ago and I know the original owner came from ITALY Naples I believe not for sure however I don't know why this got bad reviews but I can tell you SAL's is one of the best pizzas I have ever eaten in 35 years that I have been here. Now I know they sold it and recently renovated it and what not? I believe they are foreigners that bought it but it's to my understanding that they have to use the same recipe as Sal used, now I have not seen a change in the pieces. Because they are still very very good the place is always clean and I've gotten to know the lady behind the counter and she's very nice but I would recommend this place. We usually order out when we get sals. Which is often because the pizza is so delicious. This time I felt like sitting in. For the first time we dined in and the experience was amazing! I told my husband we might have to just dine in every time from now on. The staff is so friendly. You can tell they are very close. They treat you the same. Sals pizza has been reliable so far as their pizza is concerned. It's usually hot and fresh. However when ever you cal in an order, if they are busy the person who answers the phone always seems super distracted and my order has been wrong a few times. But they always make it right. Last time we ordered we got wings. I asked for them to be crispy but they weren't. They were not good at all, really greasy and dry. I won't order wings from here again. Pizza is pretty good for the area! I'm From up north so I'm use to authentic Italian pizza. My only complaint would be the customer service. There's been several occasions where I placed a order and I get there and they forgot to put the order in. Also, if they give an estimate time add at least a additional 25 minutes because it's never ready when advised. I've also had the wings, gyro and garlic knots which all were pretty good. Ok cause there was a piece of hair in my Food after they messed up The order it was cooked INTO the pizza so It was done on purpose it was a ball of hair not one piece a BALL then the "owner " comes to my house to say that he wants the difference like what then starts getting loud with me and my boyfriend at the front door then he says " WELL LET ME SEE IT I JUST WANT TO SEE " because he didn't believe us I guess ? I've been here a few times due to word of mouth and this place has always been a very "Meh" for me. And I think it's honestly due to the fact that I don't like this style/flavor of pizza crust. This time I ordered a Greek pizza and a lamb gyro. The toppings on the pizza were good, hearty chunks of feta, but again the crust was a no-go. The Gyro was good! Flavors were there and were awesome, but my pita was hard. I've always had soft fluffy pitas and this was a little on the hard side. I thought this would be a good experience because i was ordering basic food. But i was absolutely dissapointed. When i walked in the girl at the counter was nice. She was talking across the restaurant using profanity with her friends. I didn't have a huge issue with it. But anyone else could have been easily offended. I ordered a cheesesteak sub, fries, jalapeno poppers, and lemoncello cake. The lettuce on the sub was wilted and brown. It looked old and sad. My fries were so raw i might as well have just bit into a uncooked potato. I was really surprised they'd have given anything out to a customer like that. Cold, floppy, and raw. Well...2 of 2 failures and I'm done. I wanted to give them another chance after I'd ordered from them about 6 months ago and received a pizza with sausage that was obviously rotten bc it had that rancid meat taste. They apologized then, took my name so I could get a free pizza, and fixed it and sent another when I requested it the following week. This time, ordered through Yelp/Grub Hub. First of all, the delivery time was quoted at 35-45 minutes BEFORE ordering...after I ordered and paid the delivery time changed to 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 mins. Waited...order came in an hour, pizza was cold, cheese barely melted, crust not even browned. They clearly rushed the pizza...wasn't even warm when it got here. AND...I also ordered garlic knots and a salad which weren't even delivered. Delivery guy acted like he didn't know and said he'd get on them about it...restaurant manager Rashid said it was the grub hub guys fault and took no responsibility for the error. OK, so Sal's is damn good stuff. I ordered a large margherita, a Greek salad and some wings. The pizza was the best I've had in a looong time. The salad was very good, lots of toppings, the wings were tasty and as you'd expect from a good pizza place. Overall the food was 5 stars. Two things combined reduced my rating by one star. 1) it's expensive. Woo momma. One large pizza, 8 or 10? Wings, and one medium sized Greek salad was over $40. Ouch Sal! Just ouch. 2) you gotta double check your order. They initially forgot my wings and I was halfway through the parking lot before I caught it. So, overall, great food, but you pay for it with a limb. Definitely order pickup! I can't imagine adding on another $5-$7 or so for delivery and tip. Just ordered take out for my second trip here. I tried the fried ravioli and garlic knots, yum!! So good! I just left this establishment after having the worst experiences in customer service. I ordered an extra large pizza and mozzarella sticks over the phone when I came to pick it up as I typically do because I've been eating here for years, I tipped and was very polite to everybody in the establishment. When I got home and got ready to eat dinner including the mozzarella sticks I realized that there was no cheese in several of the mozzarella sticks, there were seven in the box total. When I called the establishment to ask if they could perhaps deliver me some because I live about five blocks away they didn't even inquire about where I lived they just told me that they couldn't because of staff, which was understandable. A young lady offered me 25% off of my next meal but I don't know what I'm going to eat there again so I just asked for a refund. Upon doing so, I had to speak to the owner of the establishment Joe and he was very rude short tempered with me. He told me in order to get a refund I would have to bring the mozzarella sticks back he rushed me off the phone so I proceeded to go back to Sals Pizza and show him evidence that there was no cheese in my mozzarella sticks. The young lady at the front could not process the refund so he had to come out to the front and I explained to him my grievances and that I was disappointment with the service and how rude he was and that he didn't apologize he looked at me and said whatever ma'am and proceeded to try to process the refund. As someone who's been eating at this establishment since they were in high school I can say that I am deeply saddened at the decline of the customer service and the food quality I will never eat here again. read more

Had some dinner delivered from Sal's last night while watching a PPV over at a friends house. The food was decent. Our order consisted of 2 pies, a Supreme and a Pepperoni. 2 orders of Wings, Hot and Medium and a side of Garlic Knots. The pizza dough was fresh, toppings for the most part were ok. I thought the pies could have cooked a little bit longer as the slices were very chewy. The sauce was generic canned sauce. Basically these pizzas are what I would refer to as a utility pie. It's not the best, certainly not the worst. The wings looked like they had sat to long. Taste was fine but the moisture from them being wrapped in foil had definitely taken it's toll and they were all kinda mushy instead of crisp. Disappointing. Last but not least were the Garlic Knots. They were on point and super good. They also came with a large cup of Mariana for dipping. Absolutely delicious. So like I said, a mixed bag. Food is good. This is the second time I have been here. The first time we had huge portions and the food was delicious. This time I used a coupon on the dinner. The portions were noticeably smaller, and for some odd reason the bowls were not from the oven. The Greek salad was still big and delicious. I am not sure if we should give them one more chance.... Do I like to give bad reviews? No because bad reviews are so easy, I am always looking for a reason to give a good review well, this time I can't. I placed an order via grub hub. I received a phone call about 2 minutes after placing the order. No message was left. The call was made to me twice in one minute and NO VM WAS LEFT EITHER TiME. So I wait and wait and wait for my order. My expected delivery time comes and goes. I Make a call and was met on the phone by a rude individual. She stated "I tried to call you and tell you that we didn't have any 20oz or Italian dressing but you didn't answer so I was waiting for you to call back" ny response "I was working and didn't know you called because no voicemail was left" she said "yeah we don't typically leave vms" HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW ITS YOU? She then went to say "my driver called you several times to deliver the food" I said "I can show you my phone because I didn't receive any calls from anyone other than you" She said "yeah well my driver showed me her phone and she called you multiple times" Did I give the wrong address? Yes, it was a mistake because mistakes do happen. This female employee said "we can send it back out to you but it will be quite a while until you get your food" I asked nicely "can you remake the food if it's going to be while?" So usually the food is awesome. Today i ordered two cheesesteaks and a pizza. Pizza was fine. Good as always. The cheesesteaks barely had any meat and were skimpy. Didn't see much cheese even though i ordered extra. Two small tomato wedges, lettuce looked awful. The meat was also covered with little burnt pieces like we got leftover grill scraps or something.
