Salt & Straw is always a fave of mine for some deliciously unique ice cream!!! We pulled up to this lot around night time so there was a timed valet. The valet give you a ticket to give back at the other side of the lot when you exit. I believe only the first 15 minutes is free. So our trip to get ice cream had to be quick. There was a small line. The staff inside were ready to ask us which scoops we wanted to sample first, and I always know which flavors to get and try out from the sampling experience. Since we have such limited time, I had to get a cup instead of my usual cone from Salt & Straw. I finished the ice cream while we drove out and it was a 10/10 experience!!! This is probably the least packed salt and straw I've been to and the people were all waiting for customers to help out. It's probably the least packed since parking is expensive in the lot and parking elsewhere is hard to come by. Docking a star because the parking lot is a scam. Only gives you a 10 minute grace period which is not enough to purchase and go. Picked up ice cream with my kiddo to go and was 1 minute over the grace period and the attendant gave me a too bad, you're shit out of luck look and had zero empathy. Double Fold Vanilla - not too sweet or vanilla-ey. Disappointed, thought it would be more flavorful. Strawberry Honey Balsamic w/Black Pepper- The first bite had a strong balsamic flavor, but it wasn't unpleasant. The balsamic actually heightened the strawberry flavor. Would get this one again. Salt and straw is a well renowned ice cream chain in California. I've had ice cream from them a couple of times, and have never been disappointed. I stopped in during the evening because I saw the tacolate was restocked and wanted to give it a try. The inside is very sleek and modern, and everything is very neat and clean. Service was fast and friendly. The tacolate was well packed and neat. Biting into it you get a nice crunch from the chocolate/waffle taco shell, and the nice vanilla/cinnamon ice cream inside, all very nice quality. The tacolate by itself is pretty good, but adding the spicy berry sauce creates a whole new experience; the intense berry flavor creates a lovely contrast with the ice cream, and the sweetness and slight kick really elevate the whole experience. A lot of the time chains will put out gimmicks like this and they'll be more hype than substance, but salt and straw definitely delivered with this. read more

My best friend & I felt so elite eating 2 scoops of ice cream each that cost $20. Mine was vegan, his was not. It was a true immersion of the Brentwood experience, a neighbourhood I've loved my entire life but mainly for the library & riding my bike through the residential streets. I'd recommend getting the flight (4 scoops for $16) if you have 2+ people - better deal + you get to try more flavors. My go-to for years has been the strawberry + coconut water sherbet. For May flavors- highly recommend the rhubarb crumble w/ toasted anise. We also enjoyed the pistachio w/ saffron + rose water and jasmine milk tea + chocolate almond stracciatella. Service is always fast, flavors are always good, and the pricing is standard! Love that there are always some vegan flavors and that the staff can easily check to see if a certain flavor has allergens (like gluten for example.) staff is so nice. No indoor seating, small amount of outdoor seating. Only reason it doesn't get five stars is that it's a chain and not extremely cheap. The price is reasonable but for me a five star has to be local or has to be exceptionally high value. This is a great spot!! read more

Admittedly, I struggled with Salt & Straw when I first arrived in this city. I'm a bit of a purist and don't care much for offbeat flavors or those stuffed with chunks of cookies or wads of candy. I'll correct that. I'm fine with offbeat flavors if they're simple. harmonious or promise something extraordinary. Guinness ice cream? On it. Icy herbal sorbets? Yes. Booze and spice? Bring it. But texture is important. The smoother the better. Salt & Straw never quite gets there. I stare at their menu and try to find something, anything with some appeal. The long lines come in handy in this respect, as it takes a while to find a flavor I'm willing to risk. I'll give them they produce a quality product. However, most flavors require a bit of chewing and I'm not up for it. Then the odd flavors. Nearly every offering has at least one ingredient I can't abide. Admittedly, this comes down to their creative team and me having palates from different planets. The one flavor I thought I could manage was Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper. All seemed well except for the honey. Fortunately, didn't notice any, but the balsamic ended up being a balsamic-infused strawberry jam ribboned throughout. I don't care for jam in ice cream. They may both be sweet, but for me, they're chalk and cheese. Need I mention the Thanksgiving assortment this year? Particularly, Turkey Stuffing with Cranberry Jam? Yeah. Herbed brioche bread, turkey sausage, salt & pepper, and cranberry jam. This is less ice cream than what you're forced to eat for Thanksgiving if you've got 3 children under the age of 5 at the table. The Freckled Chocolate Mint offers promise as does the Honey Lavender. And most promising of all was the Double Fold Vanilla. I was expecting an extraordinary vanilla bomb. It was pleasant, but of no particular distinction. How could this be? I ordered it again. Yep, underwhelmed. Puzzled, I needed to know more. Only to find... they go through all the trouble to make this extraordinary sounding vanilla, only to omit the egg yolks. WTAF? This effectively makes DFV a vanilla "lite", stripping it of the richness found in even the cheapest of ice creams. Vanilla, yes, but defanged. DFV, indeed. But all is not as grim as it seems. At Halloween, they made Double Bubble Toil and Trouble. Before I saw or read about it, I pegged it as a bubblegum flavor, which, of course, I'm on that. Then I saw it. A color somewhere between powder blue and shallow Caribbean waters. The only thing that would prevent me from putting blue ice cream in my gob was if it contained gummy bears or kitty litter. Fortunately, it was free of both. It tasted remarkably of bubblegum. The neat trick is how they did it. Primary flavorings were pineapple and cinnamon. Once you know this, you can taste them both clearly, but you never feel like you're eating pineapple or cinnamon ice cream. One of the best flavors of ice cream I've ever had. Would buy by the vat. Hence the 4 stars. read more

I LOVE how they have vegan flavors and the service is so friendly. The place smells divine like heaven from the making of one of the best waffle cones. I'm so glad to have finally discovered a waffle cone that I like. Highly recommend to try the waffle cones. The flavors do rotate! Honey lavender and the peanut brittle/caramel is a favorite of mine. Today was my first time trying Salt & Straw, and it DID NOT disappoint. The place is easy to find and there's parking in the plaza that's free for the first 90 minutes and no validation is needed. The plaza is called the Topa Town & Country in Brentwood. When I arrived I was excited to try all the new vegan flavors. Keep in mind that if you want to try these you must come before the end of January as the last day is January 31st to get them. While I was there I tried the Marionberry Oatmeal Cobbler, Red Velvet Cake w/ Cream Cheese Frosting, and the Death by Chocolate Chocolate Cake. They were all delicious in their own way but I went with the Velvet Cake in a waffle cone. I also must mention that I do love that they offer the samples in mini metal spoons instead of plastic to reduce waste. For toppings they also have the choice of sprinkles, whipped cream, or culinary perfume. I was intrigued by what culinary perfume was and the person working the counter (who was also so very kind and accommodating) pulled them out to show me and tell me what they are and what flavors work best with what. We decided that none of these would work with my current ice cream selection but I am curious to come back another time to try them out. They are edible perfumes that enhance the ice cream eating experience with the inclusion of the selected scent. read more

Let's get straight to the ice cream. I tried several samples. Double Fold Vanilla - it was creamy, smooth, and not too sweet. Coffee & Love Nuts - what an interesting combo and it worked very well. Sea Salt w/Caramel Ribbons - a little bit of salt with sweet caramel, a nice combo. Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip - can't believe it's vegan! It was as creamy as regular ice cream and just as good! I ended up getting this as my scoop. The location is terrific. The Brentwood area can be very busy with hard-to-find parking. However, this location is very accessible with plenty of parking. Easy peasy to get in for a quick ice cream treat. BTW, there is a little hole where you can just drop in the small spoon they provided for samples. The new salt & straw was awesome! The January flavors were all vegan with a gluten free cookie and toasted oat flavor. The ice cream here is always great and it gets bonus points for allowing me to bring my gluten free dairy free wife with me! I had the mint chocolate chip and a the chocolate cake flavors in a waffle cone. The mint chip is always good and the chocolate cake was okay. It is great for a few bites but a little too rich for me. The inside of the place was super clean, open, and inviting. There were several standing tables inside and a few tables outside. The servers were super nice and well informed on their products. The parking is a little difficult but there is parking that can be validated or street parking. This is the only reason it got a star taken away. It would be easy for someone to get frustrated with the parking and decide not to go. read more
