Peanut Butter Brownie Honeycomb with Waffle Bowl
    Grace L.

Heard great things about Van Leeuwen, so I was excited to see they opened a spot near my school! Upon entering, the space was clean and cute! There were two groups ahead of me with only one employee working, and because the first group was still trying out samples, I did wait several minutes. However, the cashier took my order while the 2nd group in front of me was trying out samples, so I appreciated her efficiency. As for my order, I got 1 scoop of the Peanut Butter Brownie Honeycomb with a Waffle Bowl. If you're a UCLA student and show them your ID, you get a 15% off your order, so that was neat! My total came out to $8.24 (discount included), which I do think is still pricey for one scoop of ice cream + a waffle bowl. However, I thought the taste would make up for it. Unfortunately, I found the ice cream way too sweet, and I have a sweet tooth! I definitely did taste the peanut butter and brownie, but I didn't taste any chunks of honeycomb at all. Additionally, my waffle bowl was very stale. I did see all the waffle cones + bowls sitting on the counter, so mine must've sat for a while. I wish the waffles were made to order, so that they are fresh to prevent the staleness. I would be willing to wait even more! Overall, I was disappointed with my experience as I expected very tasty, high-quality ice cream. Instead, I thought it just tasted okay, and the quality didn't justify the price. I will give them the benefit of the doubt since they just newly opened, so I hope they are able to continue improving. I would be willing to visit again in case I just had an off visit, but probably not soon.

What a great addition to Westwood. Westwood has severely lacked great sweet treat options, so this location is very welcomed and overdue. The opening of this location somehow flew under the radar. I'd noticed it would pop up on Yelp and other local searches, but they all had few reviews and made it seem like it was an old location, or coming soon, not already open. Located next to tacos 1986 in the same stunning brick building, this Van Leeuwen location is quite central and easily accessible on foot (but parking in the area is very tough). It's a little bit of a smaller store without much seating (I believe there might be a couple seat/tables outside), but the staff are friendly and the service is prompt. I sampled a couple different ice creams and went with a hot fudge sundae which was exactly what I was craving (and seemingly cannot be found in Westwood outside of Diddy Riese, but theirs doesn't scratch the same itch). I'll definitely be back!

Parking is pretty difficult, and valet is $5. I can easily see the parking lot getting gridlocked on a busy day. I sampled a few of their gelato flavors, including the jasmine lychee and soy sauce. Both were okay, but I just wasn't in the mood for either of them today. I ended up getting the Pandan Toast to try. The pandan flavor was really good--not too grassy and didn't taste too artificial. The ice cream also had a buttery taste to it. It might have been from the toast, but I'm not too sure. The bread itself wasn't oily, which was nice, but it was kind of dry. The pandan sauce definitely helped make it easier to eat. I probably wouldn't eat the bread by itself though because it was super hard and didn't really have much flavor. I wasn't sure what to expect from the toast, but it wasn't quite what I expected. I originally wanted to try the mango sticky rice flavored shaved ice because it looked really good in the photos, but unfortunately they didn't have it today. I'd come back to try their shaved ice when mango is in season again!

I've seen people here working on their laptop and groups of people around one table so the vibe is chill and friendly. It also depends on what time of day you come. Weekends usually get packed. As for the drinks and food. What we've had here has always been good. Best to eat their Croffle and baked goods there. Although Matcha is not for my liking, I'm more for their Taro Drink. B says the Matcha here is one of the better ones she's had. I have to agree even their Matcha Ice Cream is good. We get is the Matcha Croffle + Ice Cream, Matcha Einspanner, Taro Einspanner, and their cakes. Only thing I knocked down a star is because Not all the workers know the answers to your questions of what is in what food item or if you can substitute the milks. So that's something Cafe Upper should train all staff. Especially if people have food allergies.

And they are so sweet and do not rush anyone, you can stay here as long as you want. My friends and I WFH so we decided to Work From MemoryLook (WFML) one day together. I'm glad we did! Great pastries in the morning, i had the cremme brûlée donut which had tons of filling, and the pea foam matcha latte which was fantastic. And I had an EXCELLENT chicken Chipotle wrap at lunch that was recommended to me by the gentleman working at memory look. I'm not certain where these wraps are made. Another gentleman would bring them from the building in the same complex. I LOVED my wrap. They have a ton of seating outside too but there aren't any outlets out there so it's harder to WFH out there unless you're fully charged. But was great for separate meetings we all had to attend. The photobooth was fun but we were so thrown off by it taking 8 photos, we had no idea how many poses we would have to come up with hahaha. I would definitely come back here anytime!
