We visited the upstairs pub with the hope of watching Red Sox and Pats games. Unfortunately it was Trivia night. We figured that was OK we could still see the game during trivia. When we asked the young woman bar tending if she could put the Sox game on the TV instead of the Dodgers she curtly responded "when I get a minute". After 10 minutes of waiting for her to come back and take our first drink order (while she waited on others who came in after us) we decided to leave. As we walked out she yelled out rudely "Have a nice day." I definitely do not recommend this place. read more

Visiting family in Newport and have been to this place before so we figured we'd go again this year. Big mistake. Our desginated driver, our cousins, was 20. We walk into the restaurant with no problem what so ever, no one IDing at the door. The rest of us are 24-26 years old. There was about 8 of us. We're waiting by the bar to order a drink when the waitress comes over and assures us that it will be quicker to be seated and order through her. Ok, sure lets do that... She takes half of the tables drink orders, doesn't ID. She comes over to the other half of the table and starts IDing. Weird. Our desginated driver orders an ICECREAM SUNDAE and a SPRITE. She ID's him, accuses him of lying to be 21 (which he never did) and says that after 9:30 you have to be 21 and up. We asked her to talk to the manager and she came back and told us it's pub policy. Well guess what, you lost a big hefty check from us, because you bet we all left. Maybe if you have that policy you should ID at the door, don't you think? Or maybe if you didn't persuade us to be seated so that you could get a tip then we could've ordered drinks at the bar, been ID'd there and it would've been fine because our cousin wouldn't have ordered a drink therefore wouldn't have been ID'd. Honestly horrible policy to stick to for someone who ordered ice cream and was safely transporting us to spend money at your establishment. read more

Their menu descriptions make the food sound as if it's prepared in-house, but trust me, they are serving up pre-prepared, frozen food delivered to their kitchen from a big truck. The burgers, described as "fresh" are your typical patties with god-only-knows-what quality of beef. If standard, unhealthy American fare tickles your fancy, this place is for you. read more

I dont like complaining a whole lot so ill be short and simple, was absolutely freezing inside, asked about heat and was told its automatic and must not be working, had to pee so on my way past the other customers wrapped up in blankets I noticed the thermostat reading lower than 60 degrees, very uncomfortable, asked for a jake burger, which is a burger with an egg on it, asked for the burger cooked medium, came well done, asked for the egg over medium came out over easy, fries had so much salt on them I couldn't eat them. Clearly was a cook problem and not wait staff, waitress was pleasant, handled it well, and the manager took the burger meal off the bill. For whatever reason it seems whoever makes food at restaurants lately is capable of making numerous exotic dishes but not a simple burger Its dissapointing because salt hill is capable of much better. read more

Great little place, probably because it's the only bar in town (and right across the street from the police station). Went for lunch on a Saturday. Service is casually paced like any small town should be. Decent selection of brews on tap, with bonus points for carrying Switchback. Menu looks like standard pub fare overall, with some house specialties. I had one of these, a burger call The Jake - half pound of meat with bacon, a fried egg, and the standard fixings. It was amazing! The fries are pretty darn good too, and they offer malt vinegar for them. Overall, great experience, more than reasonable prices, and friendly local folks staffing. It's a pub. Definitely not a bad pub, but not an amazing one either. Out of the four of us, nobody managed to order a meal that wasn't deep fried or covered in cheese. We started with onion rings which were... onion rings. They came with a side of "pub sauce" which, as far as I can tell, is just mustard and mayo. It was tasty, though. For dinner, I settled on the coconut shrimp and a side salad. The shrimp tasted like you would expect... most likely defrosted. The salad, which they described with words like "simple" and "fresh" was a little more like "standard" and "ok". Definitely not worth $5. M had the fried haddock sandwich which was more fried than haddock or sandwich. It didn't even come close to fitting in the bun. And of course that comes with fries, because why the heck not. In the end, I'm sure this is a catch-all kind of place for people visiting the area and looking for some standard fare. Next time I might branch out and try a place with a little more local charm. read more

Vacationing in New Hampshire and faced with a rainy day, so we found a movie theater and took in a matinee. Afterwards our plan was to go to a restaurant closer to the theater that had very good reviews on Yelp, but they were closed Mondays and Tuesdays. We didn't know where else to go so we were heading back to the condo we rented when we passed Salt Hill Pub. A quick check on Yelp provided a number of positive reviews so we parked the car and went in. It turned out to be a very good decision! The Salt Hill Pub was exactly what we were looking for. The atmosphere is comfortable, the service was very good and the food exceeded our expectations. We will be going back before our vacation week is over. Finally made it to Lebanon's Salt Hill Pub for dinner. My wife and I arrived early, 5:30, and it was not crowded at all, but by the time we left it was full. Our waitress Amber was great, very friendly and attentive. I had the fish and chips, my wife the mac and cheese. Was quickly served our food, not much wait at all, but it was not that crowded yet. My fish was huge, very hot, flaky and mild tasting. Excellent! Not so much with the fries, they were lukewarm, kind of soggy, needed another minute in the fryolator. The coleslaw was dry and tasteless. My wife's mac and cheese was good, large portion, very cheezy tasting, but only lukewarm. We'll go back and try it again. read more

Yum Yum! I was a bit worried about going to lunch at a pub. I was thinking burgers and other fried type sandwiches, but I had the most amazing butternut squash and apple soup on the side of my fresh salad. The salad I ordered was unique and delicious. It had a grilled pear on top of greens, dried cranberries and walnuts (I asked for no blue cheese). I finished the entire thing and love it all. The soup was fresh and different from the usual french onion soup you find at pubs. For those interested in the pub fare you cam certainly get that as well. read more

Hands down the worst experience I've ever had in NH. I went to visit my family that lives in Newport and we decided to get something to eat because I'd been here with them on a past visit without a problem. This visit, however would be an entirely different story. When we arrived, we were met by a grisly, unkempt doorman who jumped up and asked us for identification that we immediately produced. I'm a Law Enforcement Officer from NYS and I showed him my badge and government ID to which he sarcastically replied, "That's not a valid form of ID!" I then produced my NYS driver's license that coincidentally has the same information on it and it was accepted. My 40 year old cousin (who doesn't drive) produced his NYS Non-Driver's identification card (same information as a driver's license minus the permission to drive) and the doorman took it to another person behind the bar. They whispered to each other for about thirty seconds when the doorman came back and stated, "We aren't going with it." Then told us we had to leave. My other cousin whom we were visiting questioned the doorman as to why we couldn't come in seeing as he'd been there many times in the past without incident, at which point the doorman became irate and belligerent stating, "We ain't letting you in because we have the right to refuse service to anyone we want and we don't want you here! I don't like your attitude, just leave!" I tried to be the peacemaker and told the doorman that we'd be leaving and I reassured my cousin that it wasn't an issue, we'd just take our business elsewhere. My cousin asked to speak to a manager to which the doorman, now shouting stated, "I am the f****** manager and I don't give a s*** about what you want or don't want, I just want you to leave! I've been the manager here for two years!" I took my cousin by the arm and we left. As a Veteran of the US Army, a Law Enforcement Veteran and a 9/11 survivor, I've never been so ashamed of another person's conduct in my life. It's sad that we still have people with this kind of mentality in this country. We drove over six hours and planned to spend time and money with our family at the Salt Hill Pub and because of the conduct of this person, our family reunion was tarnished and we won't be returning to this establishment in the future. I write this review as a warning to any and all possible first time visitors of this establishment, if you're from out of town and you're looking for a place to eat and socialize, look elsewhere. This place will turn you away based on your appearance and if you have an out of state ID. There are other places in town where you can spend your hard earned money. As for this person's conduct, I guess when you're a two-year doorman/manager, the only pub in a town that most people have never heard of and your nearest competition is ten miles away in the next town, you can afford act like a Neanderthal. read more

This is a huge disappointment to write because usually this place does have decent food and great service. Tonight the service was atrocious and the food was inedible. It was a surprisingly slow night, most people were at the bar. When we were seated she did not leave any silverware, or napkins took our drink order and left. 15 minutes later she came back with our drinks and ordered our meals. The food took 45 minutes and when she placed the plates she left, still no silverware or napkins. As we started eating one of the meals was still cold, and the fish was not cooked all the way. The sandwiches were slathered in horseradish in overwhelming amounts. One of the meals ordered was fine, ate it and ended up paying for it and the drinks. It used to be a great warm fuzzy place to eat but it just is at an all time low. Hopefully they put in the effort to change things. read more

This bar was so rude to me and my friends. It was my friend's 21st birthday and he brought his birth certificate and everything but because he didn't have a photo id, they wouldn't let him drink. In addition to that, they kicked all of us who weren't 21 out, even though we didn't order drinks. They weren't welcoming and weren't willing to even give my friend a nice 21 birthday night. The food and service are both pretty good. They have lots of fun daily specials and lots of beer options. I tried the Buffalo chicken soup (which sounded weird) and it was really good (I was pleasantly surprised). The Greek salad was great and so was my burger. I'll keep coming back. read more

Service varies - usually a kind of 'down-home' experience, which is nice. Wide range of clientele - from hipsters and tourists to after-work contractors in boots. Great selection of NH brews. Hummus platter was delish! Firehouse burger was huge and cooked to order. Our server was fantastic! We had a table of seven. She was attentive without interrupting the conversation at the table. Our glasses never ran dry and the meal was always moving along. Desserts were good too. This is a pleasant, attractive place, with good food and great service. We had lunch here today and were pleased. Even the coffee was good, and that's saying something in New England, where the coffee is usually dreadful. The soup-of-the day was a blackened chicken chowder and it was outstanding, very flavorful and brimming with chicken. A most unusual dish, and more like a stew than a soup. I wish I'd ordered a bowl of it instead of a cup. The fish and chips was a mixed bag, with the fish very delcious -- tender interior and crisp exterior, and a huge portion -- but the chips were like cardboard and disappointing, although supposedly hand cut and made from fresh potatoes. I think they were undercooked, and therefore not crispy or tasty. The cole slaw was a real disappointment -- stale and tasteless, which surprised me. The blackened red snapper was delicious -- perfectly cooked, moist and flavorful. It was served with the tastiest mashed potatoes and also some wonderful roasted butternut squash. The spice cake dessert was yummy, but the chocolate bread pudding was somewhat gummy and flavorless, although swimming in a caramel sauce. The service was great -- attentive, but not distracting. The pub is in a renovated hotel from 1825 or so and is very charming and has lots of character. The restaurant is on the main level and the bar is upstairs. Be sure to eat here when in Newport. We think the food is as good as their pub in Lebanon, although the Lebanon location has a more pub-like atmosphere. We plan to try them both again soon. read more

My husband and I visited this location Saturday night. It was about 9:00 pm and we decided to eat at the bar for a late dinner. It was busy but not packed. Bar tender took our drink orders but we had to ask to see menus and then again ask to place our order. We ordered prime rib and the casino haddock. Everything came at once including my salad. The haddock was not fully prepared as described in the menu. Prime rib was the toughest meat. We were never asked how our meals were. In fact we had to ask for sour cream and tarter sauce. Bartender seemed more interested in serving younger male patrons than us old married people. Drinks were good. But for the price the food was nothing great. read more

This place is the perfect combination of quaint and home town pub. It really all starts with the staff that was put in place by stupendous owners and managers. The waitstaff and bartenders are second to none! You will not find a place that you will so quickly feel at home in. Everyone is genuinely happy you came in to enjoy the great food and outstanding atmosphere! And speaking of the food, they have one of the best menus this side of the Mississippi, hands down. They have great staples like the firehouse burger, or sandwich, amazing egg rolls, the meatloaf is to die for and we have even begun to speak of the haddock. This all, in addition to some out if this world daily specials; that range from simple things like pastrami sandwiches to the occasional lobster roll! If you choose to spend your hard earned money here, you will not be disappointed in the overall outcome. I love that they continue to open new location with various of the food offerings. I love coming here and can't wait to go back. I promise, you'll think the same once you visit. read more

The two rating here is not because of the food quality but for the menu itself. The menu offered here has been the same since they opened. No new dishes no new menus in 4 years is not just a bit disappointing but downright horrible. The have lost my families business. They have a very small bar area and yet they have live bands who seem to think they are at the coliseum, the noise level from the music is so loud that even if they were good I would lot care, if I can't speak to the person sitting two feet across from me without yelling at them why bother! read more
