This place takes the farm to table concept and kicks it up a few notches! Offering a farm to table menu with many ingredients coming from the close-by family farm and a craft brewery, eating here definitely means eating local. The food quality is high and the preparation exudes attention to detail. I started out the mushroom soup special if the day. It was a great balance between the mushroom, truffle, and cream. No one ingredient was the star. All balanced and blended well. It was a huge potion for an appetizer and could have been a meal in it of itself. The bread that it came with was superb. Great texture for soaking up the soup and solid crust to hold it together while still soaked up. The bread was grilled to heat it up so no butter was required. The salmon was well cooked. The sides it came with were a little underwhelming and all the flavor was on the skin of the fish. My other criticism comes with the seating arrangement. We sat against the window with three seats next to each other. It make conversation among the three of us slightly challenging. 3 is an odd number to have in a bar style setting. In other positives, the beer was crisp and refreshing. There are a variety of seating options and take out too. With the versatility of the space, this place could be perfect for a number of occasions. read more

Came here on a lovely summer afternoon with a friend and had a great lunch together. I ordered the veggies, mozzarella and pesto spread sandwich on 7-grain bread and everything tasted great! The in-season veggies (from their own local farm!) were kale and eggplant, two things I wouldn't normally put on a sandwich, but I am glad that I was introduced to the combo! Also the cold brew was pretty decent as well! The menu is not expansive, but the food and beverage choices have been excellent each time. The atmosphere is a bit spartan - kind of like eating in someone's kitchen. We run an AirBnb in Concord and Saltbox is always our top recommendation for places to eat. Unfortunately, will have to reconsider it moving forward. Was very surprised when I recently ate there and looked at the bill. $28 for one lamb meatball and 2 pieces of asparagus appetizer. It was more expensive than any entree on the menu. When I asked about the price I was told it was the special. It would be a good idea to let the customer know the price when suggesting specials. I can only speak to the morning fare since I've only stopped in for coffee. The place is bright and has rustic tables and chairs. Comfortable feeling overall at least in appearance. The coffee is excellent, probably the best in West Concord. And the blueberry muffins are excellent. My only negative is that I do find that the staff are often indifferent. A welcoming smile -- and a thank you -- would go a long way to keep customers feeling welcomed. read more

My wife and I stopped in for a drink/snack and were blown away by the place. The ambience and decor were amazingly welcoming. The seating area is warm and bright. Their beers are excellent! They had four on draft, an American ale, a Belgian wit, an unbelievable IPA, and then an Experimental beer that masterfully utilized sage. All of the beers were great, but the IPA is among the best beers I have ever tasted! Whatever their brewer is doing, he should keep doing it. We got a mixed green salad with strawberries and pistachios that was wonderful. The greens and strawberries were as fresh as you could possibly imagine having come from owner/chef Ben Elliot's family farm. We also got to sample their flavorful deviled eggs and burrata (soft mozzarella and olive oil on grilled bread). Simple and refined at the same time. The food was delicious! The service was great. We were well attended to and felt like we were regular customers who had been coming there for years. We got the opportunity to talk to owner/chef Ben Elliot and he was gracious and very friendly. What do you get for the money? Very little! I was so disappointed with my first experience here. Picked up some dinner items. Ordered special $$$ It was a sandwich with fries?! Description on menu did not lead me to believe that after dropping $30 on a dinner that I would be left wanting or that I had ordered a sandwich. Sausage was tasty. Broccoli Rabe was gritty. Bread it was resting in was so-so (didn't have a fresh bread taste). I love buying local and eating organic, but I will not be back to Saltbox. I was disappointed in almost everything I ordered. The tomato soup was bitter; the Chicago style beef sandwich was tasty, the meat was tender and delicious, but very soggy and messy to eat; the Ravioletti was so overpowered by the taste of the Taleggio that it was like eating mouthfuls of straight Taleggio (which I do not recommend, either); and the walnut and date stuffed eggplant had 2 walnuts and half a date off to the side. The mini cheesecake was excellent, which almost made up for the bone dry pound cake. Most disappointing of all, however, was the fact that everything arrived cold. When I order takeout, I expect to be taking the food as I would eat it out of the restaurant to eat at home. In other words, I expect it to be the correct temperature for eating. Saltbox, however, sends all the food cold and gives you reheating instructions, which should really just be called "heating instructions" since the dishes aren't hot to begin with. No where in the ordering process was there any indication that the dishes would arrive unheated, except for the soup which said "served cold". All I can say is that I am glad I did not order the cod, since the reheating instructions were, essentially, "cook the fish". It is highly unlikely that I will ever order from here again. I'm very disappointed because I really wanted to like the food. read more

The only reason I have this place three stars was because the tiny grilled cheese sandwich I had was really pretty good. Sadly, it was one of two only positives I have about the place. I ordered a grilled cheese and a flight of beer. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but wanted to try a couple. The girl at the counter seemed pretty put out. It was a slow Wednesday afternoon. No one in line. After I ordered, she just walked away and after a few minutes, another lady told me I could go sit and they'd bring it out to me. The girl who walked away showed up at my table 15 minutes later and practically tossed the beer on the table then walked away. After about 40 minutes, I went back up to the counter and asked about the grilled cheese. Another, very sweet gal said she'd take care of it and brought it to the table about 10 minutes later. That girl was my second positive. Food might be good, but it's over priced for the size and the experience is lost by rude employees. I'm from the west coast and I didn't come all this way to be treated badly when I contribute to the locals. Even if I was in the area again, I wouldn't come back. What a shame. read more

It's WAY overpriced for the quality of food and the setting. The very limited selection of food is unimpressive. Kids menu items have all the stuff that kids generally try to avoid. This place is for you if you like slow service, mediocre stale food, non-matching silverware most of which looked dirty and serving yourself, all within bare-bones decor. And don't forget about paying double! A tiny appetizer for $9, kids meal (that no kid will ever eat) for $8. I ate lunch here the other day and was so impressed that I had them cater a party at my home a couple weeks later. They worked with me to get the menu I wanted and were open to my suggestions. Everything was absolutely delicious and our guests thought the food was superb. Really I should give this place 2.5 stars but I rounded up. I came here for lunch with a friend. The place was pretty busy and we happily took two seats by the large windows. Though busy for lunch there were two seats at the bar and two more at another window. The setting is very nice and has great light. I ordered risotto and a specialty beer, my friend ordered the Cuban sandwich and another of the same beer. The food was good, my risotto was well prepared and very tasty. It was just barely enough food for lunch. If it came with bread it may have filled me up. The Cuban sandwich was pretty small as far as signature sandwiches go. Neither of us seemed full after the meal. My gripe however was the price. My risotto and beer with tip came to $28. That is a lot of money for what I received. The $14 Cuban sandwich was similar, a very small portion for the price. I fully support the farm to table movement but I can't say I felt my meal justified the cost. The seating was also pretty limited, we would not have had an option if we'd brought a third person. I'd probably go back to have a beer or glass of wine, but I doubt I'd return for a full meal. read more

Have had the opportunity to try Saltbox now both for breakfast (breakfast scone - a nice savory option in a scone and a breakfast egg sandwich which was very good) and dinner ( Cuban sandwich which was great and bouillabaisse which had a nice mix of squid, shrimp, fish, and vegetables). This place is a great counter option to the other restaurants in the area (80 Thoreau, Bondir, Woods Hill) in that it is a lower key alternative and does great takeout. Keep in mind that outside of the pre-made options in the display the other meals r made to order so it's not fast food - which gives u the chance to try the beer and wine list. read more

Tried out this cute little cafe with two friends but found the experience to be unexpectedly unpleasant. At noon, the place is so busy and noisy that it's impossible to find a table or hear a conversation. Two of us had the tartine sandwich which was rendered almost inedible by an overpowering mustard dressing. Others said that the chocolate chip and salted chocolate cookies were the best part of the meal. Unfortunately, the menu is quite limited--three types of sandwiches, plus salads and prepared foods--so I won't be giving it another try. One star for the friendly wait staff, though! read more

I was at an gathering where sandwiches were supplied that came from this place, and they were awful greasy messes. They came with grilled vegetables, that were also dripping with oil. I won't be eating (by choice) from here again. You can take the healthiest starting ingredients in the world, but when you soak them in olive oil, all you've done is make an unhealthy grease bomb out of them. They need to hire a professional chef who understands that the proper use of oils is to use them sparingly. read more

I enjoyed a birthday dinner at Saltbox Kitchen with my husband early on a Saturday night. It was great to be able to make a last minute decision and get a seat at the table of such a quality restaurant without a reservation. As for the food and the atmosphere I couldn't have been more pleased. The food was great, really fresh and locally sourced. It was high in quality without being overly fussy or ostentatious in presentation. The beer and wine choices were great as well. I use a wheelchair and found it very accessible, it's a bonus to eat at a four legged table and not one with a central pedestal that impedes my ability to pull up close enough to dine in comfort. The food was amazing! I enjoyed everything I ordered and will certainly return for more. The burrata was delectable. The restaurant is beautiful, but small and I'm hoping that they will quickly move forward in addressing some of the issues surrounding a newly opened restaurant. The lines are long, which is good, but they way they move the line needs some improvement. Young employees seem to still be learning the basics of food service and haven't gotten up to a speed needed to move a long line. I tried ordering ahead to avoid the line and I succeeded in completely confusing the staff and not saving myself any time. I arrived to a long line and it took forever to get someone's attention to pick up my pre-paid order and wound up having to wait 20min. I'm hoping my next trip goes more smoothly because the food is great. read more
