Only open for breakfast, lunch, and early dinner, this locally sourcing, farm to table-ing, fresh and delicious-ing restaurant is one of my new favorite places to eat. Just order at the register and sit, and prepare your tastebuds for some intense flavors. Saltbox is absolutely one of the tastiest places in concord. Sometimes I come in for breakfast and enjoy delicious locally-sourced coffee along with an incredible breakfast sandwich on a 'Stone and Skillet' English muffin, sometimes my wife and I rush here after work to have an early supper and sit at the bar and watch talented chefs create our meal in a beautiful brand-new kitchen, sometimes I purchase prepared food-to-go out of the fridge case, bring it home, reheat it, and top a home made salad with skirt steak or Alaskan salmon. Outstanding food!! Delivered in an innovative (try the egg sandwich with bacon for a surprise!), flavorful (try the short rib, wild mushroom rigatoni for unbeatable taste) and fresh way (try crunchy wild rice and bulgar wheat salad). It took a bit longer for the food to come out for us all, but it looks like we were more of an exception than the norm for this place as others around us received their food much quicker. Ben and the rest of the Saltbox team catered a sit down dinner for forty people at our house this past Saturday. The food was absolutely spectacular and far exceeded everyone's expectations. The lamb was so tender it melted in your mouth, and there were many other very clever touches like turnip in the Potato Dauphinoise that brought delightful Flavors to old favorites. So, the first time I came here, I was served a dirty salad. My lunch companion had something different, we had a time limit, and the restaurant was busy. By the time I had the chance to alert our server to the problem, my friend was finished and I had eaten all the clean bits. Our server noted that only the red lettuce was dirty (she could see the soil on the leaves) and offered to bring me a replacement. I said we didn't have time. No amendments were made to the bill. Bad call. Lose the meal or lose the customer. Customer lost. Tonight my adult son asked to go and check it out, so with my warnings, we went. He is vegetarian, and ordered a $17 sweet potato with sauce and garnishes. It was served cold. When I alerted the server, she took it away, even though my son was starving. We watched the consternation in the kitchen. The chef reactive. From our perspective, How is a potato main dish not supposed to be hot? After waiting 25 minutes for a replacement, which was hot, we received a full priced bill. When is ordering and waiting for the same meal twice worth full price? Lose the meal or lose the customer. Times two. You can hope, but disappointment looms. read more

Gentleman working the register gave wrong specials for the day - Udon Soup (ahead by one day - didn't know how to pronounce quite a number of items in the special) and he made no effort to correct the mistake (perhaps unaware?). I'm an avid carnivore. I love meat. I love the snap of it as you tear into it with your teeth and the rush of liquefied fat as you macerate it into oblivion. I came into Saltbox and saw a gyro and was immediately sold. I threw in a beer for good measure. And then, as I awaited my meat feast, sipping a really tasty New England Style IPA, I finished reading the description of the gyro. Veggies. Sauce. Pita. No meat. Catastrophe. No meat? It was a mad dash to cancel my order. Beer left unattended. Chance of having my seat taken and possessions stolen. But no meat? As the protest attempted to leave my mouth... I was handed my order. "Here's your gyro", the server politely said. "Enjoy!" I moved back to my seat, sipped that bright, delicious IPA again, then decided to just roll with it. So, it had no meat. But the color of the food on the plate made up for it, as did the smell from the falafel. It was toasty and nutty smelling without being oily and laden with grease. And holy crap was it good. I ate the entire large portion, soaking up every bit of the mint and feta and tzatziki with their fresh, homemade bread. I gulped down the rest of my beer and left very happy. I guess I'll get the reuben next time. Really quaint location and atmosphere. Meandering off a totally deadstopped Rt 90 and detouring up to rt 2. Got hungry and passed this place at 6pm. Beautiful wide windows and simple but elegant decor. And the flowers. Zinnias! Service fantastic. Simple but creative menu rewarded our spontaneity. Right off rt 2 so very easy to find. Fresh local melon enhanced with ricotta and mozzarella cheese on grilled bread. Followed by Ann incredible mushroom and scallion tart. Pastry as flaky as an original Danish pastry. The small microgreens salad had beautiful edible flowers in red, orange and purple. We got 2 adult plates and a child plate and spent over $60. One of the adult plates was so disgusting it was completely inedible. This plate, The fried chicken sandwich, tasted like burnt oil smothered in cracked pepper. It was dark meat, which was extremely fatty and slimy, and tasted so awful none of us could eat it. The other adult plate was a Mediterranean type sandwich which was decent but not worth the price. Nashoba has similar quality sandwiches for half the price. The kids plate was any generic chicken strips and fries, but double the price you'd see anywhere else. Over all I would never go back even if the meal was free. Oh Concord restaurant owners, when will you get it. Even though the income demographics are higher in this part of the Commonwealth, we still want a place to relax at meal times or have a decent meal that's not overly created with a fair portion. I've walked in on three separate occasions, always willing to give a new place a chance. Service; there is none. I've read about the tips; ain't happening. Why? Because there is no service. Seating: where? Food selection: a concoction of ingredients that barely compliment each other. Food allergies: if you've got a fish allergy or are sensitive to garlic, don't put your health at risk, since the inexperienced counter help does not seem to know all the ingredients. Bragging Rights: if you happen to be one of those non-working yoga moms and want to brag that you come here; keep coming, that's their only chance of staying in business! Bottom line: if you still crave great coffee, friendly service and an inviting atmosphere, check out Nashoba Bakery. They've extended their hours into the evening, the staff works efficiently and very well together and you can always pick up fresh baked goods or prepared soups/salads for the following day. read more

Great lunch and first time here. Unique in the semi-self service, open to 7pm concept. Salumi and cheese plate were very well done and had great accompaniments. Cesare salad with anchovy fillets was excellent with a strong garlic flavor that was perfect. Burrata was very fresh and well flavored with salt and olive oil, served with great bread. Please note, my rating is strictly for breakfast. We went one Saturday morning at 7:30 and the restaurant was nice and quiet. My 4 year old ordered a blueberry muffin then I asked for the breakfast menu. The response I received was, "we only have what's out"... which was two types of muffins, a scone, and maybe one other item. We ended up with two muffins and a coffee (the coffee selection has an equally broad selection of light or dark roast coffee, with or without milk and sugar). We sat at the bar overlooking the road, finished our muffins, then went to Nashoba Brook Bakery for a proper breakfast. The food at Saltbox was fine (3.5 stars) but the menu was too small. Best breakfast in Concord (east or west): Trail's End. Best breakfast in W. Concord: Nashoba Brook Best light breakfast (aka bakery) in Concord: Haute Coffee I'd try Saltbox again for other meals but never again for breakfast unless they substantially expand their menu. read more

Go here for DINNER! I had only been for lunch which I always like, but dinner was a great experience. We went on a Thursday night and sat at the bar. I strongly suggest sitting at the bar to one serve everything going on in the open kitchen. The food is farm to table so there are fresh herbs growing, Fresh veggies being chopped and you can see the preparation of meals and plating. All the chefs treated their food like a piece of art. The meals were creative and presented beautifully. As lovely as everything was, there was nothing pretentious about the scene. Simply chefs taking care in everything they were doing. I loved the burrata appetizer and my friend didn't stop raving about the mussels (I thought the broth was delicious!) The chef conversed with us periodically and brought over things for us to taste. I had the sunflower pesto which I absolutely loved and I'm a big pesto critic! My friend had a fish dish with quinoa which he raves about. For some reason, the word has not spread how good dinner at Saltbox is. What a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go again. read more

A long-awaited opening in west concord center seems to be worth the wait. I stopped in on opening night and the place was packed, standing room only. Ordered a pork sandwich to go, took about 15 minutes. The meal was very freshly made and quite tasty. Other than the usual opening night chaos the only complaint I have is that the bread could have been toasted a little longer. This area is in desperate need of an upscale dine-in /takeout place so I think Salt Box Kitchen will do very well. And the beer and wine menu (which I did not get to try) seems very reasonable. read more

I can't believe this place is averaging 3.5 stars on yelp. I feel like I can no longer rely on Yelp to accurately reflect the calibre of the restaurants we choose. Yes, prices here are high, but that is because the quality of the food is excellent. Personal favorites are their egg sandwiches and frittatas for breakfast, double chocolate cookies and scones for baked goods, and the burrata, salads, and soups are always soooo good for lunch. The only thing I'll admit is that the prepared items in the case can be a little hit or miss. My husband and I just had a light dinner here last night paired with their beer (brewed on site), and that was delicious as well. I've also done two of the cooking classes at their farm and have really enjoyed those - and it seems like a good value considering you get a multi-course dinner at the end of the class. True to its name, the food was incredibly salty. It is very cool that they offer an appetizer, Saltbox Farm Classic Deviled Eggs mayo, dijon for $1.25 but the menu item needs to be singular. You only get one half of an egg for $1.25. We ordered two and got five, and charged for five. Also, very salty. We came for the double stack burger which instead of being two thin patties they should just serve one meaty burger. Be prepared for them to not have certain menu items - the perils of being local and fresh. Good luck, but we won't be going back. Found this place by chance and absolutely loved it! Farm fresh food and friendly service! I don't remember the last time I was blown away by a salad! I got the burger and my boyfriend got the BLT that came with a side salad and the tomatoes were the best we've ever had. One of the guys behind the counter even gave us extra tomatoes for snacking! The burger was great, not too heavy and I really liked the pickles. Fries were thick cut and we liked those too. I got an Aperol spritz and my boyfriend got the IPA, which we both enjoyed. This brilliant spinoff from the Saltbox Farm is a light and airy cafe in the center of West Concord with the same farm-to-table approach to the menu. Dishes are extremely inexpensive. I paid just $15 for a large helping of fresh Alaskan King Salmon with rice in a miso sauce with pickled vegetables. It was one of the freshest pieces of salmon I've eaten. Along with breakfast specialties, pastries and a half dozen other entree choices, they also serve a nicely curated selection of wine and beer. Everything is cafe style so you order and pay and take a seat, then they bring out the food, but the service was friendly and attentive. They close in the early evening and the menu could be a bit broader but what they have now is phenomenal. read more

Offering a farm to table menu with many ingredients coming from the close-by family farm and a craft brewery, eating here definitely means eating local. The food quality is high and the preparation exudes attention to detail. I started out the mushroom soup special if the day. It was a great balance between the mushroom, truffle, and cream. No one ingredient was the star. All balanced and blended well. It was a huge potion for an appetizer and could have been a meal in it of itself. The bread that it came with was superb. Great texture for soaking up the soup and solid crust to hold it together while still soaked up. The bread was grilled to heat it up so no butter was required. The salmon was well cooked. The sides it came with were a little underwhelming and all the flavor was on the skin of the fish. My other criticism comes with the seating arrangement. We sat against the window with three seats next to each other. It make conversation among the three of us slightly challenging. 3 is an odd number to have in a bar style setting. In other positives, the beer was crisp and refreshing. There are a variety of seating options and take out too.
