Fries (came with the pastrami sandwich)

Salty Sow is one of the best options in Austin for a casual but DELICIOUS dinner that's extremely affordable for the portion size and food quality! NOTES: - Reservations: available through OpenTable - Parking: free lot next to the building - Online ordering: available on their website through ChowNow for pickup - Happy hour: every day from 4:00 to 6:00 pm - Daily specials updated on their website THE HIGHS: - Hostess and server (Omar) were extremely welcoming and friendly - Container of water on the table so you can refill as needed - Food came out quickly after ordering - Fantastic portion sizes for the price THE LOWS: - Reservation didn't specify inside or outside and it was hot in the patio area THE PRICE: Very reasonable for the portion size and quality of food - All butter biscuits ($7.50) - Whipped cow's milk ricotta ($15.00) - Housemade pastrami sandwich ($22.00 each) - Cheese grits (menu said $8 but were charged $7) The total was $79.56 after tax ($6.06) but before tip. BEST BITES: - Pastrami sandwich (one of the BEST pastrami sandwiches I've ever had... packed with meat, bread is toasted well, and the fries are super crispy) - Biscuits (crispy outside, soft inside, and lots of layers... the molasses chili butter is sweet and melts into the biscuits) THE VERDICT: I had visited Salty Sow 4 years ago but hadn't been back just because there are SO many great places to eat in Austin. After coming back, I think Salty Sow is incredibly underrated and slept on... I already can't wait to visit again and will definitely recommend it to others!

Got the deviled eggs and duck fat fries during happy hour and it was a super great meal for the price. The deviled eggs were rich and flavorful, and the duck fat fries were crispy, salty, and really easy to keep eating. The place has a nice, elegant aesthetic without feeling too stuffy, so it still feels comfortable for a casual happy hour. Service was great too, super friendly and smooth the whole time. Great food, great service, and great vibes.

This is an amazing restaurant. My wife and I recently went here to try their happy hour and had a great experience. First, the place has great ambiance and is huge. There's two different indoor areas for seating and an outdoor patio. We enjoyed the atmosphere at the venue. Secondly, the service is fantastic and the staff is extremely friendly. Lastly, the food is delicious. We tried the truffle deviled eggs, duck fat fries, whipped cows milk ricotta, crispy brussel sprout leaves, and the catfish tacos. The truffle deviled eggs, whipped cows milk ricotta and crispy Brussel sprout leaves were my personal favorite. They took well known dishes and added a twist to them to make them unique. Not only were the dishes tasty, but the happy hour prices are fantastic. This is definitely a spot worth trying. We plan to return again soon and try more menu options.

I've been here several times over the years and always enjoy the experience, especially access to a parking lot! I did a search for happy hours that end after 6:00 pm and this one showed up as ending at 6:30 pm, however apparently that was old news and it did end at 6:00 pm. Fortunately, I got there at 5:56 so they let us order the HH items under the wire. We sat in their back deck area that is air conditioned. Our waiter was good but distracted having to go back and forth from our area to the front I think. We may have been the last table seated in his back area. The food came out really fast and since there is a bar in the back our drinks came out soon after. It's a good option for HH but just know they are now sadly part of the end by 6:00 pm hard to get to because of Austin traffic HH list. Our waiter said it used to be 6:30 pm but that was a year or so ago but the internet search results haven't caught up yet despite AI. lol.

Austin mainstay and this place never ever disappoints. Huge fan. Remember years ago when I went with a close friend and we enjoyed fried bologna. Omg it's was a treat from my childhood. My favorite has always been the chicken thighs and toasted potatoes with neck bone gravy. It's to die for. Money was our server and she made everything so easy and great. Such a great kid. It's such a laid back place with a lot of pig photos. It reminded me of our piggy president. I kept asking people if I could take pictures of Trump and the died laughing. All kidding aside, I have always loved this place. It's a keeper for old Austin!

Sunday evening we stopped by Salty Sow for dinner before heading to a concert at Moody Center and it ended up being one of those meals where everything just hit. We ordered the Prime Rib Sunday special with the twice baked potato, the wagyu burger and fries, and the whipped ricotta with pecan pesto appetizer -- and every single dish was exceptional. The whipped ricotta was an amazing way to start the meal, and the prime rib special was absolutely worth ordering. The burger was also fantastic and cooked perfectly. The vibe inside was rustic but upscale, with warm wood-paneled walls that gave the restaurant a really inviting atmosphere. The service was friendly, attentive, and helped make the whole experience feel relaxed and fun before the concert. Honestly, the hardest part was looking at the rest of the menu knowing there are already several other things I want to come back and try ASAP. Only suggestion: definitely make a reservation. This place is popular for a reason.

Another five star experience at Salty Sow starting with the reservation process, which was done via OpenTable. After making the reservation, I messaged the restaurant to let them know that we would have a doggie with us and to make sure that we were able to sit on the patio to allow for said dog. The restaurant had prompt communication back stating they would note the reservation, which I really appreciate it. They were having a private event so part of the patio was taken however they still had ample space for other patrons to enjoy the outdoor area. Part of three our server I didn't catch their name was just OK. They ended up at one point accidentally pouring water into my wine glass for a refill and they did replace the partial glass of wine. Food wise though was on point. Got the whipped ricotta and bone marrow to start then pork shoulder, beef shoulder and fried chicken for the mains. All was delicious with healthy portions for left overs. The original order included Brussels sprouts as well but those didn't make it to the table nor on the ticket. Beverages were fine as well the area of improvement would be to ask if another round would be needed. As mentioned before the service was just ok as we didn't really get checked on often enough. Overall good experience and place to take friends and fur babies!

Chicken and bacon farm salad. Portion size is huge and their dressing is sooo good

This is my second time dining at salty sow and once again the food did not disappoint. We sat outside on the patio with our pups and even though it was 99 degrees outside there were plenty of fans on the patio to keep us cool. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. To start, we had the chicken liver mousse and that was good but my favorite app so far is the bone marrow. I am obsessed with their chicken and bacon farm salad. Their house made dressing is so good and the portion size is massive. My husband had the fried chicken and collard greens and really enjoyed his meal. I will definitely be returning the next time I'm in Austin.

On a super rainy day, we walked in with reservations for three. We ordered the chicken, liver mousse, the truffle fries, and the Wagyu burger. I asked for the Wagyu burger cooked medium rare plus; however, they only cook burgers medium or medium well at the salty sow, so I asked if they could try to cook it with a little bit of pink in the middle. My favorite meal of the day was the chicken liver mousse, which was an appetizer. It was light and packed with flavor. As for the service, the weight staff was very friendly and helpful. I liked how clean the restaurant was, and I liked that there was ample free parking. I'm excited to save room for dessert next time because I heard the desserts there are pretty amazing from my nephew.

I have wanted to try this place for a while! It is an upscale gastropub vibe. The deviled eggs were some of the best I've had! The shrimp fried rice was just okay, I wanted to try it since it was on the daily special list. Our server was helpful. It was pretty good overall, I would go back for the deviled eggs!

An excellent food establishment in Austin! I recommend making a reservation online for best service. Clean and well polished restaurant! Their foods was amazing! Our order: - biscuits (so flaky and buttery!) - deviled eggs (very strong truffle! So if you don't fancy that keep that in mind) - rosemary fried chicken - pastrami sandwich

4.5 Stars We had a girl's happy hour here on a Thursday. The menu consists of creative, animal-centric dishes. We were so impressed by the massive portions at happy hour prices (listed below): * Chicken Liver Mousse ($9) - rich and delicious * Honey Rosemary Fried Chicken ($13) - so tender, and fried to a crispy perfection * Catfish Tacos ($14) - I didn't try this one but it looked marvelous, with corn and guacamole on the side Drinks - * Rosemary's Piglet ($12) - a nice and refreshing complement The interior is cute and cozy - nice enough for a date night, but also un-pretentious enough for a casual meeting. There is also a large patio to sit at. The staff were very polite :)

    Raspberry mule was nice.

I met up with a longtime family friend and her family for dinner at Salty Sow, and overall it was a nice night. Good company, good conversation, solid drinks, and a cozy vibe. I hadn't been back in years mostly because of the parking situation, but figured I'd give it another shot. The good stuff first. The duck fat fries were great. Super crispy, well seasoned, and actually hot when they hit the table. The drinks were really nice too, and I appreciated seeing Austin Eastciders on the menu for those of us who aren't beer drinkers. Our waiter was attentive without hovering and really helpful throughout the meal. Now the not so great parts. Parking is still wild. There's basically a tiny lot with one handicapped spot and not much nearby once it's full. Even though I live less than 2 miles away, rideshare honestly feels like the safest bet. Just not super convenient. The website also needs some love. I checked the menu ahead of time and didn't realize it was outdated. I went in planning to order the fish and shrimp beignets, but they weren't available. Then I tried for the short ribs and they were sold out. I ended up with the beef and mushrooms and it was just okay. Not bad, just underwhelming. We were seated right by the front door, and with the recent cold weather and the door constantly opening, I was freezing most of the meal. Not the most comfortable spot to sit but I wrapped my legs in my coat. All in, it was a mixed bag. Fun atmosphere, good drinks, great fries, but between the parking, menu inconsistencies, and an average main dish, it didn't totally wow me. I'd probably go back for apps and drinks, just with lower expectations and definitely not driving (or only go when they first open)

Everything was delicious and served quickly, even with the aforementioned dinner rush. 10/10 would order the same items again. I was so appreciative of the server splitting the entree over two plates without us asking. Did I mention the complimentary popcorn and cornbread? Twas a FEAST. We arrived and in a few minutes we were seated at a table and immediately given water in mason jars and asked for our drink order. I opted just got an Arnold Palmer but the drink menu had some cute cocktails and mocktails, as well as a nice selection of beer and wine. Instead of bread, our server brought us a basket of seasoned popcorn. The popcorn had almost like a Cajun flair, but it wasn't spicy. It reminded me of the Ground Round chain from when I was a little girl. We decided to try the corndog shrimp appetizer. I couldn't decide on an entree because everything looked so good, so I did the Parmesan chicken and my coworker did the steak salad. The shrimp arrived so quickly with four large pieces of shrimp on a stick wrapped in corn dog batter and fried to a golden brown, with a blueberry mustard dipping sauce. The shrimp were delicious and while I didn't get much of the blueberry in the mustard, I enjoyed the sweetness it provided. My Parmesan chicken was a crispy and juicy breaded chicken cutlet with a lemon cream, artichoke hearts, and what appeared to be prosciutto on top. It was served with a side of pesto couscous with grape tomatoes and cucumbers. I wish I had ordered mashed potatoes on the side, because I wanted something to soak up the lemon cream sauce, which was the highlight of the chicken. We also were served 3 mini cornbread muffins with honey butter. My coworker said the salad was just okay, and was a little on the small side. The desserts were definitely a MUST and if you visit Moonshine and don't save room for the Espresso Brownie or the Peanut Butter Pie, you're going to regret it. The brownie was so fudgey and warm and served with ice cream. It was decadent. The peanut butter pie was the biggest slab of PB pie I've ever had with a thick Oreo crust. I wish I had someone with me to share it, it was huge. Overall, if I lived in the area I would definitely be back to try other things.

The pork belly sliders were also good, balancing all flavors perfectly. The fettuccine was good, not great. The chips and their texture took a lot away from what else was going on in the dish. We celebrated my husband's surprise 60th birthday at Culinary Dropout on Saturday, September 19,…read morewith a party of about 25 people, and it was absolutely wonderful! From the very beginning, I worked with Tra, the event coordinator. He did an amazing job and was incredibly patient with me because I can be a little picky and indecisive! He listened to what I wanted, answered all my questions, and always guided me in the right direction. Everything came together beautifully. Heaven was the lead on the day of the party, and she was fantastic--warm, helpful, and always making sure everything ran smoothly. Everyone we encountered was so kind and welcoming. Cale was our server, and he truly went above and beyond. We kept him very busy with a party of 25, but he handled it all with a great attitude. He was hardworking, personable, and just an incredibly nice guy. The food and drinks were amazing. I only wish I had been able to eat more myself, but all of our guests raved about everything! Most importantly, my husband was genuinely surprised, and everyone had a wonderful time. Catarina, the general manager, followed up with me afterward to make sure I was happy with the service and how everything went. She was amazing as well, and I truly appreciated her taking the time to personally check in with me. The atmosphere was fun and lively, and the entire event was exactly what I had hoped for. I highly recommend Culinary Dropout for a private event--especially working with Tra, Heaven, Cale, and Catarina. We will definitely be back, although next time it may just be for a relaxed afternoon to watch a game, enjoy the food and drinks, take in the great atmosphere, and give Tra, Heaven, and Cale a much-needed break from my party-planning craziness! Thank you all again from the bottom of my heart for making my husband's 60th birthday so special.

The service and our waitress were great throughout our meal. The food was delicious across the board, though nothing awe-inspiring. We had the ribs, fried chicken, and fish and chips, and every dish was satisfying and well-prepared. Kind of the ilk of Lazy Dog I'd tire familiar. If you are looking for a lively patio, great service, and good comfort food while hanging out in The Domain, Culinary Dropout is a fun spot to spend an afternoon.

Really enjoyed Anthem's Happy Hour! (M-F open-7pm)…read more We split a variety of items off their HH menu: - banana daiquiri (sweet and tropical vibes) - Lychee Lowdown (floral and refreshing) - Salmon poke (full sized and fresh) - Itchy Salmon (warm and rich) - Brisket Rangoons (crispy and savory) - Miso Mac Daddy (loved their take on mac and cheese balls!) Service was excellent as there weren't too many patrons on the afternoon that we visited. The decor is cute yet casual. When we're back in Austin, we'll definitely come back!

Definitely has a kick, be prepared if you don't take spicy food well. Thai Hippie Tofu - Good flavor, although there was a little too much sauce and salty for my taste. Char-Buff Cauliflower - Good and flavorful. Hawaiian Shrimp Ceviche - Refreshing and a nice option. Itchy Salmon - Two tiny pieces of sushi, but they were good. Brisket Rangoons - Just okay for me. This was probably my least favorite dish of the night. Sweet Potato Waffle Fries - crispy with good flavor. A fun side to share. Smash Burger - We had it cut in half, which made it perfect for sharing. Good burger and a satisfying way to end the meal. Overall, a fun spot for happy hour if you want to order several different dishes and share. There was a good variety.

Perfect Birthday Celebration at Roaring Fork!…read more On Sunday I celebrated my birthday at Roaring Fork with my family, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The food was outstanding, and the view overlooking the quarry made the evening even more special. One of our favorite perks was that Happy Hour is available all day on Sundays. We started with a traditional margarita, a mango margarita, and a few mocktails, all of which were excellent. For appetizers, we shared the shrimp cocktail, fresh guacamole, and chicken flatbread. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and a great way to begin the meal. For our entrées, I ordered the cedar-planked salmon with miso soy glaze, and it was absolutely delicious. The salmon was perfectly cooked and practically melted in my mouth. My partner enjoyed the same dish and loved it as well. My youngest daughter ordered the New York strip steak with mashed potatoes, her boyfriend chose the ribeye steak with French fries (they definitely have expensive taste!), and my other daughter had the grilled rainbow trout. Every dish was beautifully prepared and thoroughly enjoyed. The red wine paired perfectly with our meal, and the staff graciously allowed us to bring a birthday cake, which made the celebration even more memorable. Between the exceptional food, beautiful atmosphere, great drinks, and attentive service, it was the perfect birthday celebration. I highly recommend Roaring Fork for a special occasion or a relaxing Sunday meal with family and friends.

More and more, going out to eat in the U.S. has been a disappointing, underwhelming experience. I…read moreunderstand that time is money and that waiters and waitresses are working for their tips, but it truly sucks that it has become so difficult to actually enjoy your time in a restaurant, to just sit and relax without feeling this underlying rush. It's something that seems perfectly possible in pretty much every other country but the U.S. The moment you sit down, the waiter asks what they can get for you. They handed you the menu three seconds ago. There was absolutely no time to glance through it, evaluate your options, or discuss them with whoever you're sharing the table with. This happened at Roaring Fork, but it also happens 95% of the time I go out to dinner. Then the food comes, you eat, say no to dessert, and voilà: the check is waiting for you! Again, you can't just sit back and relax, take your time deciding whether you want dessert, maybe order a coffee or another drink. They want you out of there ASAP, and somehow you're still expected to tip 20%, which is ludicrous, but this is another conversation. Now, specifically regarding Roaring Fork, I do wonder what actually constitutes a "fancy" place. What is it? The view of the lake isn't exactly impressive. The inside is cute. Does having a cute interior make a place fancy, is that it? Or is it the high-priced menu? There's no bread offered at the table, nothing particularly special. I am genuinely lost when it comes to what makes a place "nice" these days.
