Salty Sow is one of the best options in Austin for a casual but DELICIOUS dinner that's extremely affordable for the portion size and food quality! NOTES: - Reservations: available through OpenTable - Parking: free lot next to the building - Online ordering: available on their website through ChowNow for pickup - Happy hour: every day from 4:00 to 6:00 pm - Daily specials updated on their website THE HIGHS: - Hostess and server (Omar) were extremely welcoming and friendly - Container of water on the table so you can refill as needed - Food came out quickly after ordering - Fantastic portion sizes for the price THE LOWS: - Reservation didn't specify inside or outside and it was hot in the patio area THE PRICE: Very reasonable for the portion size and quality of food - All butter biscuits ($7.50) - Whipped cow's milk ricotta ($15.00) - Housemade pastrami sandwich ($22.00 each) - Cheese grits (menu said $8 but were charged $7) The total was $79.56 after tax ($6.06) but before tip. BEST BITES: - Pastrami sandwich (one of the BEST pastrami sandwiches I've ever had... packed with meat, bread is toasted well, and the fries are super crispy) - Biscuits (crispy outside, soft inside, and lots of layers... the molasses chili butter is sweet and melts into the biscuits) THE VERDICT: I had visited Salty Sow 4 years ago but hadn't been back just because there are SO many great places to eat in Austin. After coming back, I think Salty Sow is incredibly underrated and slept on... I already can't wait to visit again and will definitely recommend it to others!
Got the deviled eggs and duck fat fries during happy hour and it was a super great meal for the price. The deviled eggs were rich and flavorful, and the duck fat fries were crispy, salty, and really easy to keep eating. The place has a nice, elegant aesthetic without feeling too stuffy, so it still feels comfortable for a casual happy hour. Service was great too, super friendly and smooth the whole time. Great food, great service, and great vibes.
This is an amazing restaurant. My wife and I recently went here to try their happy hour and had a great experience. First, the place has great ambiance and is huge. There's two different indoor areas for seating and an outdoor patio. We enjoyed the atmosphere at the venue. Secondly, the service is fantastic and the staff is extremely friendly. Lastly, the food is delicious. We tried the truffle deviled eggs, duck fat fries, whipped cows milk ricotta, crispy brussel sprout leaves, and the catfish tacos. The truffle deviled eggs, whipped cows milk ricotta and crispy Brussel sprout leaves were my personal favorite. They took well known dishes and added a twist to them to make them unique. Not only were the dishes tasty, but the happy hour prices are fantastic. This is definitely a spot worth trying. We plan to return again soon and try more menu options.
Austin mainstay and this place never ever disappoints. Huge fan. Remember years ago when I went with a close friend and we enjoyed fried bologna. Omg it's was a treat from my childhood. My favorite has always been the chicken thighs and toasted potatoes with neck bone gravy. It's to die for. Money was our server and she made everything so easy and great. Such a great kid. It's such a laid back place with a lot of pig photos. It reminded me of our piggy president. I kept asking people if I could take pictures of Trump and the died laughing. All kidding aside, I have always loved this place. It's a keeper for old Austin!
I've been here several times over the years and always enjoy the experience, especially access to a parking lot! I did a search for happy hours that end after 6:00 pm and this one showed up as ending at 6:30 pm, however apparently that was old news and it did end at 6:00 pm. Fortunately, I got there at 5:56 so they let us order the HH items under the wire. We sat in their back deck area that is air conditioned. Our waiter was good but distracted having to go back and forth from our area to the front I think. We may have been the last table seated in his back area. The food came out really fast and since there is a bar in the back our drinks came out soon after. It's a good option for HH but just know they are now sadly part of the end by 6:00 pm hard to get to because of Austin traffic HH list. Our waiter said it used to be 6:30 pm but that was a year or so ago but the internet search results haven't caught up yet despite AI. lol.
Sunday evening we stopped by Salty Sow for dinner before heading to a concert at Moody Center and it ended up being one of those meals where everything just hit. We ordered the Prime Rib Sunday special with the twice baked potato, the wagyu burger and fries, and the whipped ricotta with pecan pesto appetizer -- and every single dish was exceptional. The whipped ricotta was an amazing way to start the meal, and the prime rib special was absolutely worth ordering. The burger was also fantastic and cooked perfectly. The vibe inside was rustic but upscale, with warm wood-paneled walls that gave the restaurant a really inviting atmosphere. The service was friendly, attentive, and helped make the whole experience feel relaxed and fun before the concert. Honestly, the hardest part was looking at the rest of the menu knowing there are already several other things I want to come back and try ASAP. Only suggestion: definitely make a reservation. This place is popular for a reason.
Another five star experience at Salty Sow starting with the reservation process, which was done via OpenTable. After making the reservation, I messaged the restaurant to let them know that we would have a doggie with us and to make sure that we were able to sit on the patio to allow for said dog. The restaurant had prompt communication back stating they would note the reservation, which I really appreciate it. They were having a private event so part of the patio was taken however they still had ample space for other patrons to enjoy the outdoor area. Part of three our server I didn't catch their name was just OK. They ended up at one point accidentally pouring water into my wine glass for a refill and they did replace the partial glass of wine. Food wise though was on point. Got the whipped ricotta and bone marrow to start then pork shoulder, beef shoulder and fried chicken for the mains. All was delicious with healthy portions for left overs. The original order included Brussels sprouts as well but those didn't make it to the table nor on the ticket. Beverages were fine as well the area of improvement would be to ask if another round would be needed. As mentioned before the service was just ok as we didn't really get checked on often enough. Overall good experience and place to take friends and fur babies!
On a super rainy day, we walked in with reservations for three. We ordered the chicken, liver mousse, the truffle fries, and the Wagyu burger. I asked for the Wagyu burger cooked medium rare plus; however, they only cook burgers medium or medium well at the salty sow, so I asked if they could try to cook it with a little bit of pink in the middle. My favorite meal of the day was the chicken liver mousse, which was an appetizer. It was light and packed with flavor. As for the service, the weight staff was very friendly and helpful. I liked how clean the restaurant was, and I liked that there was ample free parking. I'm excited to save room for dessert next time because I heard the desserts there are pretty amazing from my nephew.
This is my second time dining at salty sow and once again the food did not disappoint. We sat outside on the patio with our pups and even though it was 99 degrees outside there were plenty of fans on the patio to keep us cool. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. To start, we had the chicken liver mousse and that was good but my favorite app so far is the bone marrow. I am obsessed with their chicken and bacon farm salad. Their house made dressing is so good and the portion size is massive. My husband had the fried chicken and collard greens and really enjoyed his meal. I will definitely be returning the next time I'm in Austin.
An excellent food establishment in Austin! I recommend making a reservation online for best service. Clean and well polished restaurant! Their foods was amazing! I have wanted to try this place for a while! It is an upscale gastropub vibe. The deviled eggs were some of the best I've had! The shrimp fried rice was just okay, I wanted to try it since it was on the daily special list. Our server was helpful. It was pretty good overall, I would go back for the deviled eggs!
4.5 Stars We had a girl's happy hour here on a Thursday. The menu consists of creative, animal-centric dishes. We were so impressed by the massive portions at happy hour prices (listed below): * Chicken Liver Mousse ($9) - rich and delicious * Honey Rosemary Fried Chicken ($13) - so tender, and fried to a crispy perfection * Catfish Tacos ($14) - I didn't try this one but it looked marvelous, with corn and guacamole on the side Drinks - * Rosemary's Piglet ($12) - a nice and refreshing complement The interior is cute and cozy - nice enough for a date night, but also un-pretentious enough for a casual meeting. There is also a large patio to sit at. The staff were very polite :)
I met up with a longtime family friend and her family for dinner at Salty Sow, and overall it was a nice night. Good company, good conversation, solid drinks, and a cozy vibe. I hadn't been back in years mostly because of the parking situation, but figured I'd give it another shot. The good stuff first. The duck fat fries were great. Super crispy, well seasoned, and actually hot when they hit the table. The drinks were really nice too, and I appreciated seeing Austin Eastciders on the menu for those of us who aren't beer drinkers. Our waiter was attentive without hovering and really helpful throughout the meal. Now the not so great parts. Parking is still wild. There's basically a tiny lot with one handicapped spot and not much nearby once it's full. Even though I live less than 2 miles away, rideshare honestly feels like the safest bet. Just not super convenient. The website also needs some love. I checked the menu ahead of time and didn't realize it was outdated. I went in planning to order the fish and shrimp beignets, but they weren't available. Then I tried for the short ribs and they were sold out. I ended up with the beef and mushrooms and it was just okay. Not bad, just underwhelming. We were seated right by the front door, and with the recent cold weather and the door constantly opening, I was freezing most of the meal. Not the most comfortable spot to sit but I wrapped my legs in my coat. All in, it was a mixed bag. Fun atmosphere, good drinks, great fries, but between the parking, menu inconsistencies, and an average main dish, it didn't totally wow me. I'd probably go back for apps and drinks, just with lower expectations and definitely not driving (or only go when they first open)

Great beef shoulder! Went here for dinner with a friend and overall enjoyed our experience. Highly recommend coming in with a reservation, as there doesn't seem to be much seating. Also recommend coming in for happy hour (from 4:30-6:30) for cheaper drinks and appetizers. For appetizers, we got the shrimp ceviche, duck fat fries, and a carnitas taco. Out of the three, I enjoyed the taco the most--it was pretty big for what you pay, and it comes topped with an egg. The pork is juicy and flavorful. The shrimp ceviche was good but simple in flavor; my favorite part was the guacamole it came with, but when has anyone ever had bad guac? It comes with 3 or 4 large chips, which I would've preferred being broken up in smaller pieces. The duck fat fries were good too, although small in portion and I did not find them that particularly unique to other fries I've enjoyed. For entrees, we enjoyed the beef shoulder and the candied pork belly. The beef shoulder was excellent; it was very tender and well seasoned, and came with a sauce as well as mashed potatoes and candied potatoes (which were AMAZING). Our waitress recommended eating this with a side of mushrooms which really did pair well with the dish. Definitely recommend the mushrooms, they taste lovely and come in a huge portion. The pork belly was cooked very well and I especially enjoyed the rub it came with. However, I am hesitant to call it candied as I was expecting it to come in a sweet glaze of some sort. Instead, it came soaking in a bowl of brown sauce with collard greens. I did not particularly enjoy the pairing of this sauce with the pork belly, and would have enjoyed it more without the sauce. Simply put...Go now. This cute award winning restaurant is a gift for your palette. Not far from downtown Austin, this restaurant has a great variety of fresh and delicious options to provide you with the yummy in your tummy kinda of satisfaction. We went for happy hour that had great drink and food options to try. We had the following: Bone Marrow = delicious and have set a new standard for this kind of entree. Duck Fat Fries = great balance of salty and savory Crispy Brussel Sprouts Leaves = yes and more yes to these! Blackened Rockfish (not hh) but highly recommend Our party of three from the DC area left within each a humm of ohhhs and ahhhs from savory ingredients which made our meal. This place is sexy grown and fun. Will be sure to come back again when in Austin. read more
Been in Austin for 8 years now and have seen this place pop up many times as somewhere to try. So glad I finally did and a little sad it took this long. Wasn't very busy at all, granted it is a Wednesday post "pandemic" but with limited places sitting people at capacity I expected it to be much busier. We were sat with no reservation promptly. Drink service took a little longer than it should have but other than that service was on point! We decided to try two appetizers, two entrees and two sides. The food was on point all but the deviled eggs. They were way overpowered with garlic. If not for that they'd have been perfect. The duck fat fry's were rich with a perfect cooked egg to add a creaminess to the dish. The pork belly was flavorful and the greens were amazing! The steak was some of the best I've ever had with perfectly sautéed mushrooms. The mashed potatoes were as creamy and decadent as any I've ever had. Last and certainly not least was the crispy and amazing Brussel sprouts. We will be back to try more of the menu and specials they over. Don't wait as long as I did to come here. read more

This was my first ever visit and now there will be multiple visits to follow cause my experience was yummers. My husband and I had a 5:45 pm reservation and were seated at a quaint inside table. Scott our waiter came buy and introduced himself after we were seated. He was very observant enough that he knew we had no time to look over the menu so he mentioned that and informed us that he was going to get our waters to give us more time. We were checking out the menu and realized we were there for Happy Hour! I loved that fact because that meant we could try more for less. For starters, I had a delicious Raspberry Mule and we ordered the Triple-Fried Duck Fat Fries which came with cold béarnaise as well as 110-min egg. Can I say that it was very good! Scott suggested the Tot-Chos which was on their daily specials and they hadn't had on the menu in over 3 months. With that said, we couldn't pass the opportunity and we are sooooooooooo glad we didn't cause they were bomb! It had home made bacon and cheddar tots, Carolina BBQ beef, beer cheese, pickled jalapeños and pickled radish pico, can I get a heck yea! Off the HH menu I also ordered a Pork Carnitas Taco, Catfish Taco and the Honey Rosemary Fried Chicken which turned out to be a lot of food for me but ended up taking the chicken home to make chicken and waffles in the morning which were superb if I say so myself, lol. Scott was even so very kind enough to write the name of the dish and the date which was so very nice and never had any waiter do that for me before. That alone deserves 5 stars. My husband really enjoyed the special Pekin Duck Breast dish. Overall we had a wonderful experience which included the food and the service. We can't wait to visit again. FYI, they do have a parking lot with about 30 or so spaces and lots of outdoor covered seating, not just indoors. You just have to go now! read more

The happy hour menu is fantastic! The brussel sprouts and banana beignet dessert were some of my favorite food items in Austin! The fried chicken and eggplant were also delicious. The parking is very tough, you may have to wait and be bold to snag a spot! read more

I booked a reservation here after having seen this restaurant pop up in a food blog and seen the rating on Yelp. I currently live in Dallas and had family visit Texas and wanted to make sure they got meal that highlighted meat and this seemed to fit the bill. We on the patio as the weather was good. The server and the service was good however the meat and meals were very underwhelming. I got the carnitas which were cooked correctly but it wasn't served with anything that complimented it. The hominy was near flavorless. They skimped on the guac (it was watery and amounted to less than a spoonful) which was an up charge. I think it needed more acidity and an introduction of other flavors to stand out. One family member ordered the petite bone-in filet cut of meat and thought it was a poor cut. The other ordered a burger and wasn't impressed. I was a bit let down and felt the need to share the review. read more
This place is a bit off of the beaten path but is absolutely freaking delicious. The flavoring on their food is remarkable and the overall layout of the restaurant was nicely done. They have a rather eclectic menu with an interesting offering of entrees and appetizers. My table sampled a bunch of the fare, but I will say that the pork belly was very very good, I mean delicious. It was flavored unlike any pork belly I have ever eaten, crispy where it needed to be and soft where it needed to be... Overall, this place's flavor game is on point and I'll likely be back each time I'm in Austin. I know this place is even more popular than before since the First Lady came to visit. I want to go on recorded I dined her BEFORE she visited. The second time around I had tons of questions on what it was like when she visited. This was my second trip to the Salty Sow and I will admit I liked it even more the second time around. We started with the salmon Followed by the chicken liver pate I asked if they had moscato of the menu and the staff pointed suggested one. It was not as sweet as I perfect but still extremely tasty. I finished off my meal with the Farm house salad. I had this salad the last time and I must admit it was even better this time. Keep in mind Happy hour is between 4:30 -6:30 pm. You will find 5 dollar wines, cocktails at a discount and many appetizers to accompany your alcoholic choices. read more

The food was delicious. I came here with a friend and split the following: Brussels Sprout Ceasar, cauliflower rice, Brussels sprout leaves, pork belly, and slow cooked beef shoulder. I highly recommend the pork belly and the crispy Brussels sprout leaves! The staff was a little slow, and maybe there were a lot of reservations due to valentines being the next day. We got there 30 min early and were told we could get drinks while we waited at a stand up table, but no one ever came by to help us. Our server was busy with other tables and wasn't very attentive when we finally got sat. I think we finally got drink deliver 15 min after we sat down. read more

I can't believe that I have been coming here for the longest time and have yet to leave a review. The Salty Sow might very well be my favorite Austin restaurant. There are a handful of places that I can probably say are better, but my children love this place which puts them on top of my list. The Sow'Rita (their version of a Cadillac Margarita) is by far the best drink on their menu. The Flying Pig (their version of a French 75) is a close second. If you go for happy hour I suggest you get one (or two) of everything on their menu depending on the size of your party. Also, do yourself a favor and order the chicken liver mousse. It doesn't matter if you don't like chicken liver... you will like it now. Other things you must order are the triple fried duck fat fries and the roasted bone marrow. The chocolate truffle cake is the one of the most decadent desserts I have ever tasted and even though I'm always way too full for dessert, I just can't say no. They take reservations, their service is superb, parking is convenient and they don't hate children. Salty Sow has an A+ in my book. read more

Happy hour here is amazing. It's the perfect example of how happy hour should be. Great drink and food deals with lots of options. I came at six o'clock on Friday evening and was afraid that we'd have to wait a long time for a table but they had a table available right away. Score! I had the blood orange margarita which was awesome and my friend had the sangria and loved it. We then decided to order an assortment of items from the happy hour menu. -Rosemary fried chicken is a must-order. Delicious seasoning with a heavenly biscuit. I could have had 10 more of those biscuits. -Truffled deviled eggs were good but not spectacular. -The duck fat fries were yummy with a fried egg on top and dipping sauce. Everything is better with a fried egg on top. -I was most surprised by the crispy brussels sprout leaves. Honestly, this didn't sound like something I'd like. Not a big fan of brussels sprouts or raisins but this was a really unique and memorable dish. In short, I loved this place. Going to go back for dinner and more delicious dishes. read more

"Serve no swine before its time." At least that's the slogan that came to mind when I broached the entryway of The Salty Sow, first having successfully passed the rusty pig sculpture standing as a sentinel against incognito vegetarians. After all, it couldn't afford to let offenders pass...seating is limited and reserved only for discerning carnivores with a taste for signature charcuterie boards, prime steaks, and some of Austin's best chops and seafood. The interior is charming, a cross between a library and barn, replete with paintings of porcine subjects. My party of four quickly got things started with the charcuterie board that featured an assortment of cheeses, pates and sausage. The best was the chicken liver pate with fresh cracked sea salt. Spread thick on a slice of freshly baked baguette, it set the stage for the next appetizer- duck fat fries. They were some of the crispiest I'd ever tasted. The waiter recommended the filets, and they didn't disappoint, the medium rare beef was complemented nicely by the wine reduction and the heaps of mushrooms on top. A side of collard greens rounded out the meal. Dessert was legendary - and I am not using that term loosely. Two words: Butterscotch Budino. The richest, thickest dulce de leche you could imagine, with its salted caramel and whipped cream had me forgiving instantly the two weak martinis I'd had with dinner. I a nutshell, the Salty Sow is a worthy meal and Austin experience. Besides the woeful martinis, the only other shortcomings were a few instances of slow service - requests for more bread came late, to the point they weren't needed anymore. I was so excited to try this place. I've heard so many good and positive things about Salty Sow. But wow, we were super disappointed. Everything was super SALTY. I mean I guess it goes perfectly with their name.... We got the Candied Pork Belly (most popular dish) and it was not good. The pork and the collard greens was basically drenched in soy sauce. The Truffle Deviled Eggs was just average, nothing special. The pork chop might have been the only good dish. The meat was tender and juicy. The Cauliflower & Wild Rice Casserole was interesting, but again.. it was salty. I love cheese but this was way too cheesy. I'm pretty sure I got more full from drinking so much water, rather than the food. Couldn't finish most of the food because of the sodium overload. In addition, the service was just so-so. It was really packed so I understand the longer wait and slower service. But honestly, I would only recommend this place for happy hour since the drinks are good. Anyways, if you want to wait long, spend lots of $$, be confused and unsatisfied, go for it. But if not, try a different restaurant. I mean the 1000+ reviews and 4.5 stars is very impressive but it might simply be an an unpleasant and mediocre experience. read more
tl;dr - AMAZING HAPPY HOUR!! Service- 5/5. It was great! My server was attentive and friendly. He made several rounds to make sure that my party was taken cared of. He was also very knowledgeable and made delicious recommendation of their happy hour menu. Drink- 5/5. Blanche ($6)- house blood orange frozen margarita. It was delicious and STRONG! I wish that I had better alcohol tolerance so I could try out other drinks! Food- 4/5. I read great reviews about their crispy brussels sprouts ($5), so I had to try it! Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan. Each time I took a bite, I didn't get the same flavor. Some bites tasted overcooked while other bites tasted ridiculously salty! Their honey rosemary dipped fried chicken ($6.50) was delightful! Crispy and juicy! I wasn't a fan of their homemade biscuit. It was too hard and dry for my liking. I will be coming back! It's a great place for a date night or just hanging out with friends. read more
Triple. Fried. Duck. Fat. Fries. I don't care if you're even on a Jain vegetarian diet, order this dish. Now! Salty Sow has a true passion for the culinary arts. Where else can you order a pigs head, a pigs head people! On a damn plate. What?! I would recommend making a reservation as they are always busy, and most times I just grab a drink along the window area waiting to be seated, since I never follow my own reservation advice, fail. Ordered the filet, charcuterie board and the duck fat fries this time around. The filet was cooked perfectly, and scrumptious.. The charcuterie board has a good selection on it, and I would say the star is the pastrami smoked salmon!! The duck fat fries are out of this world, and have actually been televised on many best fries of america episodes. Comes with a 110 minute egg on top... and cold Béarnaise sauce on the side for dipping. Ohh.. and the truffled deviled eggs have bacon and chives on them, very solid. Also suggest grabbing the roasted bone marrow! Damn, i'm hungry now.. I have always had excellent service when coming here, but do understand if some people have had sub-par service at times, it's always packed. It can become hectic at times (in a good way) but every visit has been on point for me. Love sitting at the long high top table in the back room, it also allows you to become a little closer face to face with your date during the dining experience, strategy gentlemen, strategy.. Oh my stars and garters do we now have a preshow ritual when going to Bass Concert Hall and that would be The Salty Sow. First off they do offer reservations and I strongly suggest you procure one prior to your visit. We did so and had maybe a 10min wait for the party before us to finish and our table to be ready. We were able to use this time to peruse the menu and decide what cocktails and items we were going to order (side note: they offer happy hour daily 4:30p-6:30p). Our waiter was incredible: he was attentive without being overbearing, knew the menu inside and out (more on that in a moment), and understood we were on a time schedule and made our evening incredibly perfect and stress free. Having dietary needs in our party, our waiter was able to offer suggestions/accommodations with ease thanks to his menu knowledge. I had a SALTY SOW'R to drink (ok, I had two) and they were strong and easy to sip on. Then came the meal: Chef's Vegetable Antipasto. This thing was absolutely incredible. Fresh, light, filling, and above all as tasty as can be. I can't describe how amazing this meal was. Beets, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, etc simply prepared and incredibly flavorful. There was no sauce or oils dripping from my meal/left in my plate, simply, perfectly prepared. I could go on and on and on but rather than that just take my (and the other 1100+ yelpers) word on it and come here. It is pricy but I guarantee it is worth every penny. read more

I've been here multiple times on most occasions I try to make it in for Happy Hour. It's from 4:30 to 6:30 Every day! the Happy Hour menu selection is great, there are a lot of food options and drink options. I would highly recommend the Happy Hour if possible, that way you can try a bit of both menus. I tend to try to make a reservation as well, it can get busy. It wasn't so busy when I arrived on this last time at 5:30, but it was also a rainy Monday. There is a parking lot attached to the business, it's right before you actually get to the building. It's fairly large for being downtown, but it does get full pretty quick and hard to park when it gets crowded. The atmosphere is outstanding, very Austin-ish. The food is unbelievable. There are so many things on the menu to choose from, that picking just one is the hardest part. So I didn't just pick one. I had a little bit of everything. The Triple Duck Fat Fries are outstanding and enough to share, the green chili grits and eggs were also delicious. The pork belly is so decadent that it is a smart idea to share that than to eat it all for a meal. The crispy chicken is so good as well. Everything is just fabulous, The service is great as well for being a Austin Hot Spot. The dessert is so good that you have to get at least one thing. There is no reason to go and not to share there. Loved the whole experience, nothing that I did not enjoy. I highly recommend going here with friends or on a cozy date. read more

Our reservation was easy to place and confirmed in a timely manner.We ordered the chicken liver mousse, bone marrow, HH deviled eggs, and salmon rillette with cocktails - they were all perfectly delicious and reasonably priced. The ambiance was upscale and relaxed. Our server Brad was super friendly, knowledgeable, and fast even though we arrived during happy hour. He went above and beyond to insure we had an amazing experience. Salty Sow is our favorite restaurant in Austin and we recommend it to all our friends! read more
Food was great - but our server was meh... We made a reservation online for 8:30pm and got there and realized the restaurant closed at 9pm. I'm guessing that's why the server wasn't exactly helpful or enthused to be serving us...the hostess was very nice and welcomed us for our reservation, so we were confused why we were able to make a reservation so late. We sat outside, we had our pups with us. My boyfriend and I always like to try out lord of different foods, so we ordered the Bone Marrow and Chicken Liver pate for appetizers, crispy chicken thighs and candied pork belly for entrees and then the bananas foster beignets for dessert. We racked up a good tab, and waited a good 25-30 min for the appetizer and entree to come out at nearly the same time...food tasted delicious and I honestly think anything is great on the menu, just sucked that our server had a poor attitude and the wait for food was long, even at the end of the night. read more

The Salty Sow serves delicious and creative American comfort food at a very reasonable price and is definitely a must-try. The menu offers interesting takes on a wide array of nicely prepared proteins, along with attractive appetizers and dessert options. You could definitely drop by for dinner on a weeknight and spend less than 20 dollars a person for a quality plate of food, or spend over 50 bucks trying out some of the great things they have on the menu and leave stuffed to the brim. My dinner was something in between those two extremes. We started out with the duck fat fries and the brussel sprouts. The duck fat fries were perfectly cooked and flavorful, served with sous vide runny-yolk eggs and a cold béarnaise sauce. Overall a very rich but tasty dish with a huge portion. It could have definitely benefited from some sort of spice or acid component, though. The brussel sprouts that people recommend trying are essentially deep fried individual brussel sprout leaves, and I was much less impressed with the portion for this plate. Overall a tasty dish and a unique appetizer to split, but somewhat greasy. For the main course I was able to try their pork belly and a beef cheek special they had on the menu. The pork belly was wonderfully crusted with a peppery seasoning and was juicy and tender. It was served over a bed of vinegary collard greens, which provided some much-needed acid to cut through the richness of the meaty but melty pork belly. My favorite dish was definitely the beef cheeks, though, which were fork-tender and served with mustard mashed potatoes. The plates are well-put together with lots of balanced flavor. The meal was a bit on the heavy end but the food was very tasty. Didn't get a chance to stay for dessert but the options looked interesting enough. Highly recommend this dinner spot for anyone looking for a hearty dinner in Austin. 5 stars. read more

It's been over a year since my first review of Salty Sow and I have to say that I am more in love with this spot than I was before. The staff is wonderful, the service and food impeccable, the cocktails are combinations of loveliness that will leave you wanting more and the experience is always memorable. Tamra truly cares about every customer's experience, always welcomes and appreciates feedback and is one of the best managers I've come across in Austin. The servers are knowledgeable, attentive and so friendly. I have menu favorites, of course, but everything they serve is just so wonderful. If you haven't yet tried Salty Sow, I highly suggest you do. The prices are more than reasonable for the all over experience and quality. read more
We got there for happy early right on time b/c then it gets full. So definitely come early Their drinks here are unique and wonderful. For that reason alone, you should come here. I got their blood orange margarita (Amazing) and strong- just the way i like it! I also got the Petey which was refreshing and tasty. My friend got the sangria which was also great ( but dont expect it to taste too much like Sangria) For food, we got the deviled eggs (BEST), brussel sprouts (good), zucchini fries (good but a little mushy). I also got the carnitas taco - really good but be careful not to make a mess when the egg seeps all over you. I would have rather have another one of those instead of the fish taco. Everything we ordered was great. We all really enjoyed our dishes, that we ordered to share. You'll see the food in the pictures. But what you won't see is the dessert. So let's talk about that.... banana fosters beignets O M G so damn good that I didn't even get a picture. If you love bananas, like me and beignets this right here is the one. I wish SO BADLY that I didn't overstuff my face at lunch the same day I had a dinner reservation at the Salty Sow. This place is legit. My friends and I all shared the charcuterie and cheese board and it was big and diverse, offering a little something for everyone. The chicken liver mousse was my favorite item on it, but I was mostly disappointed with the pastrami salmon. I wanted to try it so badly and at the end of the day, it simply tasted like salmon. No more, no less. Sigh. Anyway, because I was so stuffed, I shared two small plates with one of my friends. We had the crispy brussels sprouts leaves which were excellent, and the cauliflower and wild rice casserole, which is basically a cauliflower and rice mac n cheese. Yum! I took a bite of the blackened redfish and it was simple, clean, and excellent. Though I didn't get to try, the person who ordered the slow cooked pork shoulder was very happy with his pick. Sadly we were all so disgustingly stuffed by the end of our main course we couldn't entertain the idea of having dessert. However, the bananas foster beignets kept flying out of the kitchen and they looked BOMB. Next time, Salty Sow, next time. read more

I loved everything about this place except that my main course (the pork belly with collards dish) was too salty. I know it's in the name, but for the price I felt like it was too much. If I could give a 4.5 I would. Other than that the service was amazing, the atmosphere was perfect for a catch up session with a friend. The appetizers, which we were able to get for $5 during happy hour were great as well! Note, a friend ordered the antipasta and did not think it was too salty! read more
