My favorite little local Italian market in St. Louis! The quality of the ingredients they use is A+ and all of the cured meats are amazing. They also have a great selection of cheese as well, perfect for putting together a charcuterie board at home. All of their sandwiches are really good, and Dan (usually always there) is an awesome guy who is always so friendly and positive. Let me start by saying this place rocks and I'm a big fan to be only a couple miles north of it! I've been a number of times to either take some coppa home, salumi for later or to have sandwiches there. On that note, get the coppa rossa and thank me later - it's really some of the best coppa I've ever had. This is really more of a 4.5 rating for me however I'm just a touch let down by the price point. Let me start by saying I do expect to pay a premium for fine meats. However, looking around it seems like most everything is either $20 or $25/lb. I don't mind paying it for some of the sliced meats but have a tough time rationalizing for the salumi. Also, I think the sandwiches are too steep at $10 or $11 for the portion size. Great sandwiches but pricey! We had two sandwiches and an extra sauce and it was $25! Yikes! This is no jimmy johns and you won't find a sandwich like this one for a long, long ways... So savor it. Let me start by saying that this review is *mostly* for the service I received...or didn't receive...the last time I visited Salume Beddu. I was really excited about being in the store for the first time, but my hopes were dashed as soon as the door swung open. I was the only person in the place, and even the owners seemed to have disappeared. When someone finally surfaced from the back of the store, I told him that I had never been there before and was new to the whole process (The Hubs was the one who went in last time). He basically pulled out a paper menu, told me to let him know if I had any questions, and disappeared into the back again. Hmph. I did, in fact, have questions, and I wanted to try a few things that looked/sounded good, because most of you Yelpers suggested that was the way things were done. Unfortunately, I sampled nothing, and when I did ask a question about one of the selections, he told me they didn't have anything with cinnamon in it...even though I just read that ingredient on his little flimsy menu. Very annoying. In the end, I only bought a few things and left feeling a little miffed because he made me feel like I was inconveniencing him. I will say that the selections I purchased were second to none, but the service left MUCH to be desired. Guess I'll just send The Hubs in from now on. read more

Having relocated to STL from Brooklyn, well, I don't find many places that meet my expectations. What can I say I'm a food snob! Having lived in Italy for many years I never even try eating Italian not even in NY. Those are my standards. When I found Salume Beddu, I knew I struck gold. This is the best charcuterie ever, better than anything I have found in NY in fact, just tops. Most of the bad reviews below have to do with the smallness of the place. From the beginning I forgave that because if you have any brains you can see the story: super talented guy with maybe not alot of money but alot of vision, needs to find a little low rent place to begin his dream. YEAH, hello he picks a strip mall. I can imagine how low the rent is here which allows him to concentrate on his passion and focus on his product and not worry about overhead, OK ? DO NOT go for a "nice lunch date with the wife"....its not that kind of place. There are barely room for tables, yeah. Lunch was probably the furthest thing from Ben's mind (maybe) when he set up shop here, but I was o so happy when he started serving a little light lunch thing. (don't worry I think they will probably expand in the future with the amazing product they have that now shows up in our local grocers. Special things about Beddu: homemade sausages to die for. Cotichino at Christmas time. A selection of excellent midwestern cheeses from super small creameries: yeah sometimes they run out of stuff. Small selection of nice imported pastas. Super great legumes for our own plains states. Sometimes also: mission fig tapenade, their own make perserved lemons: I go here each year now for gift packs to take home and send to friends. This place is amazing. I've already expressed my love for their sausage but that was many months ago. Now for an update: this place has some of the best cheese in town. They have a small selection- but what they offer is phenomenal. Also, every Saturday they bake bread. Usually focaccia, occasionally baguettes. Definitely worth stopping in. Fair warning: if you pop in on Saturday there will most likely be a line. It's worth the wait though. read more

If you love cured meats than look no further. I personally don't care for it, but this place has made me a believer. Upon arrival the store front doesn't look like much, in fact from the outside I would just drive right on by. Once we stepped inside the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The place was cozy and cute. The menu for sandwiches is quite small but why do they need variety when the few they have taste so delicious. I ordered soppressata (not sure of the spelling) and it was fantastic. It had warm meat, crunchy bread, and a perfect layer of mustard. I could not have been happier that my husband convinced me to go. We also purchased some other meat while we were there that was a little expensive. I was not a huge fan of it but then again I'm not that into "tube meat" my husband loved it and said it was the best he had ever eaten and he ate it all in the car before we even got home. read more

Salume Beddu is a great alternative to the massive meat-piled sandwiches from the nearby Hill. (Please don't think I don't love those monster sandwiches, I do) It's a small shop with seating for maybe a dozen and a huge selection of Italian cheeses/meats. It would be a great place to pick up a gift for any glutton/foodie in your life. I ordered the special sandwich togo. It was slightly smoked pork topped with a creamy brussel sprout thingy. The pork was absolutely perfect-unctious and smoky. The baguette it was on was nice, too, chewy but manageable. And the brussel sprout creamy slaw mix was inspired and melded perfectly. I'd put it in the Top 10 sandwiches of all time list. The service was genuine and quick. The reason for 4/5 was the price-I paid 13.50 for the sandwich alone. It was completely worth it but still prohibits me from visiting more. read more

Salume Beddu is maybe THE best thing St. Louis has to offer to the world of food. This place isn't cheap but it's so much better than all the other charcuterie around that it's worth every cent (this is no criticism of the other providers in the city, this is just on another level). I think one of the best things that could be said about this place is that it would be a raging success in any city in the US. If you have eaten some cured meats at a local eatery that took your taste buds to heaven, chances are that it came from Salume Beddu. The coppa and the guanciale are favourites of mine. Well those, and the lardo. It's not for everyone, lots of people are put off by the fact that it's just flavoured fat, but it's near perfection as far as I'm concerned. They have great accompaniments too, the fig tapenade and mostardo transform even lesser ingredients. Went for the first time on the day before Thanksgiving. There was a long wait, but it was worth it! I bought bacon, salsicca, and prosciutto. All were amazing. The bacon and the salsicca were especially tasty. The bacon burst with smokiness, combining the perfect amount of salt with a hint of brown sugar or molasses flavor. It contained just the right amount of fat to create crispy strips that melted in my mouth. The salsicca was equally delicious. It was juicy and perfectly spiced. My whole family loved it. read more

The old adage: You get what you pay for. What you get here is awesome and full of flavor so it is not inexpensive. If you want good stuff though, go here. I got an assortment of meats and bacon here after trying their food at Iron Fork. All were delicious. This place is overrated and too expensive for what you get. I went here hoping to buy prosciutto and they didn't have any, so they sold me culatello which they said was better but didn't tell me it was $15 for a quarter pound! You would think they would have warned me before slicing the meat. The irony is that it wasn't better than prosciutto - I definitely prefer Volpi's prosciutto much more than this culatello. We ordered two sandwiches from here as well, a meatball and a Porchetta, and neither were that memorable. I want to give them two stars because of my experience overall, but I will leave it at three because I do think they offer quality food overall. Just not higher in my book. read more

Wow! GREAT meat, GREAT atmosphere, and GREAT selections. Salume Beddu is a great place for a local sandwich, or if you are in the mood for some delectable meats, pick some up here. We bought two different kinds of salami and they were both delicious. The price however is a little steep, but that is the price you pay for amazing meats. The sandwich menu looked great as well. We had a sauce magazine coupon to Salume Beddu and I wasn't really sure what to expect of this little store tucked away in an old strip mall. But once you walk in it is like being transported to Italy! The smell of delicious (free!) coffee welcomes you, along with a ton of free samples to try. We got bacon (wow, that was good) and some fresh sausage that we still need to try. Also some cheese and one of the salamis. I don't remember the exact names but everything we taste tested was really delish. The owner working the counter was super helpful about picking out items and even suggested a sausage to go with some fresh produce we had just picked up at the farmer's market. Beddu.....may be a Beddon't......How bad do you want sausage?? Step one: Pack a lunch...or at least a flask! Step two: Don't say Volpi....(oops, we didn't know!) Step Three: Get someone to wrap the meat and put a sticker on it to keep the line moving. The cashier, who is in the pic, was an absolute DOLL! However, she was the most pleasant thing about the experience. We went in today, Saturday, early afternoon. I had wished based on the look of the spike haired guy with the Italian accent that I wasn't still in my sweats, but upon talking to him...kind of a jerk. We didn't get the interaction, sampling, etc. we had hoped for based on the bitches in front of us who took a good 20 min sampling and chatting...beat it. Beating your Salami takes on new meaning....lol. They need, music, a drink sample perhaps, something to distract you from the super long line. It's very small in there, not conducive to a pleasant wait either. We enjoyed the crackers, meat, truffle cheese was awesome, however, it's all about customer service and i'd rather get my truffle cheese from Trader Joe's than feel ignorant about meat and not get doted over like the lovely cashier did. It was just kind of awkward. Maybe go on a random weekday and you may get more attention. G & W at least serves beer in line...I'm just sayin....who wants coffee on a Saturday at 2pm?? Not me. It is on the edge of pricy but the food is the goods. Everything is really high level. The sit down area to dine in seems like a bit of an afterthought but the food is so good you don't care at all.
