There's nothing like a classic hometown spot. For over 30 years, Salvatore's has served great Italian food. When we arrived, the Matre'd welcomed us, asked if we had a reservation, and offered to seat us. Although we usually prefer the bar, it was full. Sensing our preference, he said watch this and arranged with the guests so we could still enjoy our usual spot. His thoughtful gesture made us feel right at home. Choosing a dish is the hardest part. I ordered an Italian beer. Normally a Peroni, but tonight it was a Moretti. The house salad is simple and fresh. Italian dressing with blue cheese crumbles certainly hits the spot and is perfect for the main course. Tonight, I went with one of my favorites, Cavatelli Catania, and it is perfect. So hot that when you turn the pasta over, the steam rolls out. Just the way I like it. Extra cheese on top, and you are good to go. Not only now, but there is so much there is enough to take away and have another meal. I almost hate to comment on Salvatore's because more people will be coming there, and I won't be able to sit at the bar for dinner, a drink, and fun conversation. We were in the area since The Royals game got rained out, so we figured we'd finally check this place out--I've driven past it at least 100 times over the years and just never stopped in. After living in Chicago for 12 years, I legit felt like I'd been transported to Highwood's Old Town. What a hidden gem right here in Missouri! We had amazing service, and our sweet, helpful waitress recommended a fantastic Italian red blend and a calamari appetizer to start. The bread, Caesar, and house salads were all great--classic and fresh with homemade dressings. For dinner, my husband had the spaghetti and meatballs, I went with the Mostaccioli Victoria, and our daughter had the capellini with tomato basil. Everything was absolutely delicious and super generous in portion. The sauce had that sweet, mellow, authentic flavor we love, and the tomato basil was probably the table favorite. Prices were very reasonable for the amount and quality of food. I came to this beautiful Italian spot located on 40 highways as an attendee of a luncheon. There were around 65 women so I applaud the staff for their patience and professionalism. There were people ordering a verity of different types of drinks and were accommodated properly. When you walk in, the decor is beauuuuutiful. I didn't get a picture of it, but it's stunning. I didn't know what we were served, however my chicken was tender and juicy.. truly some of the best chicken I had in that regard. However, you could take vinegar in almost every dish, which has a pretty infamous taste for those who like it. That being said, I feel like the vinegar took away from the flavors of the dish. The initial atmosphere of the building was not the best. The interior was dated and the tables were cramped together. Despite this, the food definitely made up for it. I ordered the Pesto Alla Pesca and it was delicious, but I had to get extra pesto with it since the dish was light on it. Everyone at our table had good portion of sauce except the pesto dishes. My girlfriend ordered the Alfredo, which was a very thick sauce and we both agree didn't have much flavor, cooking it ourselves would've had a better taste. This is the worst food, the worse service that my husband and I have ever had in our lives. I ordered gnocchi, I received 4 on a sea of sauce on a bi plate. Now you know that gnocchi are small , made out of potatoes and flour, I've made them myself to freeze at home. Now mind you I was SERVED 4, you I even ran my fork over the sauce in case I was missing some. No I was not. The sauce was so salty, its as if someone emptied the whole salt in the sauce. I can not believe they would serve this to a customer! My husband ordered spaghetti, but could not eat it because it was only partially cooked. That was three years ago when we first moved to Independence. Needless to say we have never been back, nor will we ever go back or suggest this horrible place to anyone. I would think twice about giving it to my dogs, which I wouldn't anyway because of the tomato sauce. Everytime we go past this place we cant understand why on earth it is so busy. My girlfriend and I ordered lasagna and shrimp fettuccine. The red sauce on the lasagna was burnt and sour. The shrimp fettuccine Alfredo sauce was watered down the noodles were over cooked. The ceaser salad had no ceaser dressing on it. I had to ask for some dressing and I was told that it was on the salad??? Not... the bread was ok. We ate 2 bites and pushed the meals to the side of the table. Ugh ... Well we went home disappointed and hungry. We will not recommend this restaurant. read more

We have gone to Salvatore's numerous times for years. Have hosted parties and large dinner parties with wonderful experiences. Only one other time besides today was a complete waste of money! We ordered Italian Butter(absolutely bland) Shrimp Fettuccine (five dime size shrimp which tasted like frozen shrimp) Spiedini D'ablo (chicken was dry and sauce was not spicy) The manager was walking around but never spoke to anyone nor smiled. I have my favorites and I just can't seem to try new dishes because I love my favorites so much! You always receive bread and butter, but trust me, splurge and order the Italian butter and dip your bread. It's soooo good you'll want to use to spoon to eat it like soup, but your manners will tell you otherwise Another thing I love about Salvatore's is they don't short you on the sauce. (The food was great at the party!) When I entered this evening, I was greeted by the owner who sent me at a table. He was very friendly . Upon being seated a friendly waitress asked me if I wanted something to drink other than water and bread which she had already ordered for me. This place has a great ambience and everyone is super friendly. I witnessed the owner come and personally think some people as they were leaving and walk them to the door. I came here for the first time after Garozzo's left the LS area. I was missing a great stuffed artichoke! And, I hit another gem! This review is based off our second visit (first was just as good). They have a great wine and drink list. I'm not a bourbon drinker but their Sicilian Manhattan was super good!! Had the right amount of wizardry to make it delicious. We enjoyed the Italian butter appetizer. For those of you that love bread with butter, oil, cheese, and herbs, this is for you. It goes great with drinks! We also chose the Alla Sicilliano stuffed artichoke. As mentioned above, I LOVE THIS! On top of a regular artichoke dripping in oil goodness, you also have prosciutto game, shrimp, and provel cheese. I'm telling you, you can make a dinner off of this ball of awesomeness!! My husband and I both had the chicken and vegetable soup with our meal. It was the soup of the day. It was hearty, stuffed with veggies, and seasoned perfectly. For dinner, my husband got the veal saltimbocca. I always have to have a bite. Veal with prosciutto and a heavenly sauce. This time around, I had 2 blends of the spiedinis. I chose the Atkins, with Alfredo sauce and artichoke hearts, as well as the Pesto alla Pesca, with pesto cream sauce and spinach. Ohhhhhhh emmmm geee...such great goodness! Only two things I would offer up to improve. Bathrooms could use an update. And, offer freshly grated parm with your delectable food. I know there is some parm in a shaker on the table but doesn't beat fresh. Overall, we had wonderful service and a great experience. COVID-19 Reopening Update: First off, I still believe that they serve the best veal in town. Must be like riding a bicycle for them. Today was almost a stress test for them. Usually closed on Sunday, add that it was Mother's Day, and opening to almost full occupancy after months of playing the lock down game, it was heartening to see them come up to the task. By all appearances a good portion of their experienced staff have weathered the storm. But the sudden influx of Mother's Day diners had to be like drinking from a fire hose. Showing up for a 1:00 PM reservation I grabbed the only open parking space in their good sided lot, Adding to that their usual brisk carry out business had to put serious pressure on their kitchen and the rest of the staff. As expected, table service was first class. As a family owned (and operated) restaurant, fine dining is a thing of pride to them. The only concession I noticed to today's stress was that the kitchen appeared to be running a bit behind their historic promptness. But are you really wanting "fast food" for the family on Mother's Day? Most diners were concentrating on the social aspects of a holiday dinner. That said, our server gave us the impression that each customer was given his full attention. He kept us covered with refilling drinks and letting us know that he was making sure our orders would be coming out as soon as they were ready, and we were still his prime priority. That is something I appreciate about family restaurants, when done right you feel like you are a guest who has been invited into their home for dinner. Yes, the veal was wonderful, as was the eggplant, and pasta. Reminding us that they were still the Salvatore's we always looked forward to, desert was up to their long time reputation. Our server Chad gets alllll the stars, if not for him I would have put the dinner at 4, not that it was wasn't good or even great but the best KC Italian? It's up their for sure, but exemplary service, hands down the greatest in KC category. We had a fairly large party in for a birthday, grandmas, aunts, cousins and kids were definitely in the mix. Chad treated all requests like he was taking care of his own family. Brought all the kids ice cream, I snuck a bite, Strawberry, chocolate and pistachio, not a bite left. We all also marveled at how well behaved they all were. I think in part it's the natural effect the ambiance gives. Candle lighting, low lights, calm, relaxed, smiling laughing but not loud. Date night or family were equally enjoyed in the same space. Lasagna, chicken Spiedini, Alfredo, pasta, pasta and more pasta. Everything you want Italian comfort food to be, rich, cheeses, sauces, garlic tomatoes, fresh flavors. We ordered about 1 dish for every 2-3 people and than shared family style and we still walked out with left overs, portions are generous. Great Italian with all of your favorites including seafood, chicken, veal, and pastas. Of course they are famous for their Chicken Spiedini prepared about 5 or 6 different ways. You can't go wrong here. The traditional lasagna is delicious as well as the pollo Parmesan which comes with a generous covering of mozzarella cheese. The warm Italian bread comes out with real butter. Be sure to order a bowl of the bread sauce for dipping-good stuff! I like the Cesar Salad instead of the green house salad. They have a nice selection of wines. There is a nice bar area and the dining room is smaller, but intimate. The wait staff is very helpful and will make sure you have a wonderful experience. Went here tonight with another couple, we'd all been here before and enjoyed it. However this was not their night and not the server's night. My house salad had absolutely zero artichokes and hardly any dressing. I normally love this salad and make it at home sometimes. I ordered the Marsala (veal) and pointed to it on the menu for clarification because there are 3 variations of Marsala's on the menu: Marsala, Bistecca Marsala & Pollo Marsala. I was served the Pollo Marsala. I thought ok, not what I ordered but whatever. However it was very dry and I was not going to eat dry chicken when it wasn't even what I ordered. I told the server I had ordered the Marsala (which is the veal). She said there are 2 on the menu so she assumed I wanted chicken. If I'd wanted chicken I would have ordered the Pollo Marsala. (As I stated above there are actually 3 on the menu.) She took it away and I did receive the correct Marsala without having to wait very long. My spouse ordered the Hill Special with meat sauce. The server asked if he wanted meat sauce or a meatball. He clearly said meat sauce. He ended up with a meatball. The sauce had something in it because it was a bit spicy, not like a marinara sauce should be. Almost like there was some Diablo sauce mixed in with the marinara. My friend ordered the Gamberetti Angelina. The broccoli was old and bitter, all yellow in color. Her Coke had no carbonation. They brought her another which had carbonation. When they brought a refill, totally flat again. She tried a Dr. Pepper, still flat. My spouse had Diet Coke with no issues. Definitely issues with their syrup/carbonation mix. Our other friend's entree had no issues. He ordered the Gabriella Spiedini. I overheard our server apologizing to the table next to us. She said she had made an assumption based on the questions they were asking about the menu. She should really learn to listen and not assume. I'm giving 2 stars because once I got the entree I ordered it was good, the server did attempt to correct the beverage issue and the one meal had no issues. But, overall not the best experience. If we hadn't been here before we would never be back. We all decided to try again in a few months. If the next time isn't a good experience it will be our last. read more
