My wife enjoyed a great lunch here and paid with a credit card. The server returned with the check to sign but the card was missing. Server came back for the check but wife refused the give the check until he returned the credit card. The server needs calibration, he looked around for a minute and then went back to serving food. Wife walked to the bar and repeated her request for the credit card. Sam Kendall himself started searching. Sam found the credit card in the trash can. He returned the card and was very pleasant. When wife got home and told me, I called the restaurant and spoke to Sam. I repeated the story and asked him to coach the server and to delete the generous tip from the credit card charge. Sam apologized for the servers actions and deleted the tip. We will continue to get customers at Sam Kendall's. read more

I was appalled at the lack of consideration for other patrons for mask wearing. After hearing your governor (not mandate) mask is absolutely abhorrent at this time. The restaurant as well should take charge of that and COULD. Bad form Sam Kendalls. HAD we known this lack of conscienceness we would have deferred our dining here. One Good Rib-Eye! This is a Camden Gem! Very nice atmosphere, very good service, and very good food! The Rib Eye steaks are as good as they get, perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked- medium rare, nice and juicy! This is worth the trip from Columbia, or the surrounding suburbia USA, to enjoy a great meal, in a nice casual environment. The building is a converted old bank- rustic exposed brick, tin ceiling, dim the lights and have a nice cocktail type of building... A nice place for a quiet, romantic dinner. PS: Take a big wad of cash with you, because the "good stuff" will cost you- it is a little on the pricey side. But, it is well worth it! PSS: The desserts are to die for!!! They have a chocolate cake that is one of the best I've ever had!! read more

A very disappointing experience. I ate there 5 years ago and was looking forward to going back. I called this afternoon right after 4 PM to make sure they were open and that they would allow my ESA to dine on their patio. I was assured that I could and that she would be on the lookout for me. I told her I was parked and walking from behind the building. I was out front at 4:18 where 2 tables were dining. An employee walked out to go to one of the tables. When she was headed back inside I stopped her to ask if a table I was standing next to was one of restaurant's. She assured me it was so I told her I'd like to sit there and dine. I was never spoken to again. I even moved over closer to the patio covered area when another couple came from inside the restaurant and sat out front. One of the other couples who had been there was closing out. The same server came back outside and brought their check. I was sitting within 2 feet and she never spoke or even welcomed me or even said " someone will be with you shortly." The bartender came out and brought drinks to the new couple who sat after I had been there almost 10 minutes. I was well within his eyeshot and I kept looking at him expecting him to hopefully say " have you been helped? " or " someone will be right with you." I was out in front of the restaurant for 20 minutes, after calling and making sure they were open and I could be served on the patio. I finally left and walked back down the street without anyone who worked at Sam Kendall's even speaking to me except the one girl, one time when I had to stop her and ask if the table was theirs and telling her I'd like to dine. I cannot review the food because I was never served or even offered a menu. read more

First time at SK. We had high hopes as it came very highly recommended, very cool vibe as you walk in. From the street (and price tag), we assumed this was pretty much the finest dining Camden had to offer. The food was really good--but it was really expensive for the environment, quality of food, and the service. Told the waitress I wanted to start with water while I looked at the wine list. It took 15-20 minutes to get her to come back to the table to order my wine, let alone our food. None of the staff, management included, cared if their masks didn't cover their nose OR mouth, let alone nose AND mouth. The guy making the salads didn't even have a mask anywhere near his face/around his neck. I'm aware that lots of people don't "believe" in this pandemic, but it's still a legal mandate (at the time of our visit) regardless of whether or not you believe COVID is real. You don't just get to pick and choose which health codes to believe in. read more

We were really looking forward to eating here. It was busy, but we were seated quickly. Unfortunately, no one acknowledged us or took our drink order for over 25 minutes. We saw another table of 6 get seated well after us and get their orders taken. A waitress asked us 2 times if anyone had come by. We watched her negotiating with another waitress on who was going to wait the larger table vs us. There were only 2 of us. She then came and said she had alerted our waitress who didn't know she was to wait on us, and if she didn't come soon, she would take our order. She then walked away. At 27 minutes we left. The larger tip was just too important to waste time on us apparently. read more

Was there this weekend as we were in town for The Cup. We arrived around 9 on Thursday night, for cold cocktail and lite fair.. Outstanding! Made resies for Friday night with friends who we share a tailgate with and who also own a business in Camden. Of course it was crazy, seated right away, while we waited for our guests to arrive cocktails were ordered. My only issue was the Filet, say to over seasoned which I {being in the business now a Publicist in the Industry} should have asked however I did not expect that amount of seasoning. I ate around the Filet, my Jack Russell enjoyed it. Yes we did mention it to our server. Guests and my Spouse's meal were spot on- of course we'll go back. Thanks Johnny read more

After being a waiter for almost 30 years the service there isn't what I personally think that it should be. The few times that I've been there the waiter left empty glasses on the table. He was over by the bar playing on his cell phone. When I complained the only answer that I got from the owner was sorry that you feel that way read more

We have been back twice in a month and we never get to go out, so that means a lot. The food is outstanding and a solid wine list. The people who ordered cocktails in our party were not impressed, but not disappointed to send them back. I would not order the spinach and artichoke dip again, but the stuffed mushrooms and shrimp appetizer was outstanding. We loved the crab cakes, salmon and shrimp, lobster and tomato bisque. We had a reservation that our realtor made for us, but they lost the reservation. They were able to still seat us. The hostess was very nice and told us about the specials. Our waitress came and was very helpful. Drinks were good. The spinach artichoke dip was really tasty. My wife ordered scallops and I had Grilled Mahi with a side of scallops. This place has the most exceptional service I've ever seen in little southern town like ours. They don't let your drinks run out, the wait staff is always polite and knowledgeable, your food tastes amazing and the steaks are NEVER tough or salty or have any fat on them. Quality of furnishings and surroundings not quite what do you expect in a rural southern town. Atmosphere itself is worth the price of the food. Service: Dylan took very good care of me at the bar. Not very crowded but had quick friendly service. Conversational without being too chatty. He is a good bartender. He knows his social cues. Not just some dude behind the bar serving drinks Food: I had the ribeye with salad and baked potato. I have had better ribeyes that were not as expensive. The steak was good but a bit disappointing for the price. Closing remarks: I will return here next time I am in town More for the service and the atmosphere than for the food. Simply awful. We were in Camden for 2 nights and had read the reviews for local restaurants. We selected Sam Kendall's for its varied menu. We didn't get fancy with our order but here were the results: House salad -- at least half of it was brown on the edges and unedible. After I picked out the brown pieces, there was only about half of the salad left, which was edible. Tomatoes were delicious. My husband ordered Fried Shrimp and they were overcooked and dried up; simply not fresh. I ordered appetizer crab cakes which tasted sour and I chose not to eat them fearing the crabmeat was bad. I didn't want to risk getting sick on our vacation. The bread served was delicious but the butter looked old. I think you need a new chef or kitchen manager who would approve every dish that leaves the kitchen, or empower the waitresses to refuse to take an order to a table if it is not up to standard. Our waitress agreed that she would not eat our salads, yet didn't choose to refuse them from the kitchen. You've got some work to do to make your restaurant as good as past reviews have been. This was a Saturday night, I assume your busiest and most important night of the week. read more

After reading a few Yelp dinner reviews, we decided to stop here for lunch. What a great find! I had the hickory burger and my husband had the Reuben. Both exceeded our expectations in quality and taste. Our service was prompt and very friendly and parking was easy. Bob, our server, was attentive and helpful when asked for recommendations. Excellent food, atmosphere in a beautiful historic town! Every course was delicious, cooked perfectly to the order and presented well. The special sold out, so we were offered complimentary dessert. My steak was seasoned and cooked to medium. They served Onion in lieu of chives for the potato. The grouper with crab was delicate and well seasoned. Calamari was tender and breaded lightly. Stopped in after the Carolina Cup on an early April Saturday afternoon. Crowd was sparse when we arrived but started picking up as more race fans made.their way from the track. Our server was superb - thoroughly reviewing the menu and options for changing sides, etc., and attentive throughout our visit. She was also casually chatty; not obtrusive, but friendly. While the menu price of the food was above average, the quality, flavor and portion sizes supported the price point. We'll definitely go back if we're in the area again. read more

We ate there on Valentines evening. It was bad from beginning to end. The bread was cold and the butter was frozen. The appetizer of spinach and artichoke dip was only okay. We both had the filets with lobster sauce on top. They were tepid, overcooked (we ordered medium rare) and tough. Even the cheesecake was not edible. Needless to say, we were not happy with this terrible, overpriced meal. Sam Kendall's has always been "hit and miss". We definitely hit an off night. Sam's was recommended to me by the lovely women who were working at the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site. What I found was great food and a nice atmosphere. I had the seafood pasta, which was sauteed shrimp, scallops, and lobster served with pasta in a white wine garlic sauce. The seafood tasted so fresh, not like it had spent more time frozen than alive. It was all very wonderful! All of the servers were pleasant and helpful.
