So I was just forwarding information for Sam Lagrassa's to a friend of mine and I noticed I never did a review. I could've sworn I did at least one review as I frequented here quite a lot over the years. With that said I just have to praise the corn beef sandwich, one of the last real ones around at least in the Boston area. All the other sandwiches are fantastic also. Pricey, yes but worth it definitely! I've been hitting this location since the 80s and never have had a bad sandwich. I would have to basically say, Sam Lagassa's is the king of sandwiches. Not that you would probably drive and park to go here but you might and there's a garage across the street. Other than that, it's located on Providence right behind the jewelers building. You can't miss it, Huge, big frontage. For the age of this location, it is basically kept spotless in great condition. Extremely well kept building in facility.. the staff is always nice and will answer all your questions about sandwiches and other items available or just generic Boston rhetoric. All the local merchants eat here.

Fantastic sandwiches - huge portions, lots of meat and full of flavor. Definitely among the best I've had in Boston. That said, for $25-30 per sandwich, these are also among the most expensive sandwiches I've ever had. Good for a special occasion!

Sam LaGrassa's is a Boston legend that's lost its way. As a local, I used to defend Sam LaGrassa's to anyone who called it a tourist gimmick. It was the gold standard for a real sandwich in the city. Sadly, the magic has faded. Between the soaring prices and the shrinking portions, the value just isn't there anymore. You can taste the "corner-cutting"--the flavors aren't as bold as they used to be, and the sandwiches feel noticeably smaller even though the cost has increased exponentially - I mean $30 for a sammy?! It should have gold in it! Even then, I'd keep coming once in awhile if the service was worth it. but honestly - the staff seems burnt out even bright early in the morning. It's hard to justify the premium price for a shadow of what this place used to be.

Nothing beats an office lunch order from Sam LaGrassa's! The sandwiches are always perfect, the bread is fantastically baked, and my day is always improved after a Sam's sandwich. The sandwiches are a bit pricy, but once you try it, you'll know why.

This chipotle pastrami is $30 and it is the most expensive sandwich I ever had! I don't normally eat pastrami so this is my first impression. This was a big sandwich with lots of flavors and the pastrami to cole slaw ratio is a very good balance. I also really liked the Chipotle sauce with it. The service was great. I ordered in person and got it to go. They were very nice and got my order in a timely manner. There is lots of seating inside but it is super busy and there were no seating. Very casual and bustling place, they are popular for sure!

The only thing I regret about coming here is stopping by on my last day in town. Had I known how good the sandwiches were, then I would have ate here a few more times. I came upon opening on a weekday and quite a few people followed. It must get busy here on weekends because this weekday opening was busy. They had a huge catering delivery the staff was feverishly working to load up as well. The staff moved pretty quickly and got us our order fast. Everything was really good. The seating area is midsized. I could see it filling up during peak hours, but lucky for us we had plenty of seating. I'll be stopping by here again when I come back to town.

Ok..10 out of 10 sandwich! I got the white tuna on Scala bread. Perfectly sized sandwich. And the way they package it makes it like a gift. Perfect to take to a park or a hidden spot to enjoy. Love their selection of drinks, especially Jarritos which are glass instead of plastic bottles. I got the mango. Now the drawback...the prices. I got the only sandwich I could afford on the menu. The other specialty sandwiches are all around $25. Maybe they are big enough to share? Anyway, despite th prices I did really enjoy it and would highly recommend coming here!

I finally tried a sandwich from Sam LaGrassa's (the Diablo Pastrami) and--wow. This beast is stacked with chipotle mayo, BBQ sauce, melted jack cheese, applewood smoked bacon, Bermuda onion, and hot cherry peppers, all packed between a round roll. It was smoky with just the right amount of heat from the chipotle mayo, balanced beautifully by the subtle sweetness of the cherry peppers. Everything is made better by adding bacon for a savory crunch, and the pastrami itself? Perfect, tender, and flavorful. I ordered it to go, and they handed it over in this surprisingly cool little box that opens up so you don't need a plate--nice touch for presentation and it keeps from adding to the pile of dishes in the sink. Now, as much as I enjoyed every bite, it came out to almost $30 with everything, which feels steep for a sandwich, even a great one. So was it delicious? Absolutely. Was it $30-good? Maybe once--for the experience.

While $25 for a sandwich is an incredibly steep price, I believe this sandwich is worth it. I usually find meat heavy sandwiches boring and not super yummy, but these sandwiches have changed my view completely. The meat is soo flavorful and tender! I came in a skeptic of their food but literally one bite in and my mind was changed. This is the first (and quite possibly the only) place that could make me rationalize spending close to 30 dollars for a single sandwich. The size of the sandwiches aren't huge though so those with big appetites might not be full at the end, but these sandwiches are worth it because of their quality, not quantity.

The juiciest and most flavorful pastrami sandwiches I ever had. I really liked the pastrami traveler and my boyfriend liked the pastrami reuben so you can't really go wrong. There was a bit of a line and wait but it was worth it. There is a good amount of seating inside and there was a couple tables available even though there was a lot of people. I think it was because most people were taking it to go.

Certainly the best pastrami sandwich I've had in ages, maybe ever. I ordered the chipotle pastrami, which is medium sliced pastrami, Cole slaw, honey mustard, some cheese, other spices, eg chipotle, served on a grilled roll. Perfect ratio of meat to other ingredients. I'm comparing this in my mind with pastrami's at Carnegie deli in NYC and smoked meat venues in Montreal. Hands down this was superior. Truly one of the best experiences on my Boston trip. Downtown there is a small sandwich shop that on busy days has a line. Hate lines but this is worth it. Small shop with seating inside and great service! Quick and to the point. But it's the combination of flavors and bread I love. Pastrami and corned beef! With slaw and dressing! Oh yes please. The cuban was also about perfect! Chips? Yes. Soda and other drinks? Yes!! Just go!!!

As the name "Mercato" implies, it's not a restaurant, so no place to eat, no place to "do your business" after, and if you've made it to the north end, you already know there's no place to park. -- Italian Sandwich: Long, soft bread, kinda like the kind you had in your school cafeteria, only a million times softer, a million times more crackly, and a million times better. Setting the base are oil, balsamic vinegar, lettuce, tomato, pickles, hots, and provolone. Italian sandwiches usually come flat-stacked or in a C-shape. Here, it's a fluffy stack, with the VERY-thin-sliced-to-order meats-- prosciutto, mortadella, salami-- piled generously but delicately, like tissue paper. More oil and balsamic on the other side seals the deal. It's a glorious sandwich that'll fill you up with the first half, but you'll want to keep eating the second half, because it's so good. The deep flavors of the meats comes through, and that's soft, crunchy bread is a delight. Pro tip #1: Get it with a small side of pesto. Have some bites with, some bites without. Pro tip #2 (in more ways than one): Plan your restroom visit at the nearby Boston Public Market. Pro tip #3: Plan your eating near the Paul Revere statue on Hanover Street, at the basketball court down Stillman Street, or on the Greenway down Hanover Street.

As of August 2026, the website lists the burrito as $14, but the price on the in-person menu was $16. I would give the burrito 4 out of 5 stars because of the way it was wrapped - about a third of the burrito was just egg and cheese and the toppings (avocado, red onion, hash browns, salsa verde, crema) were crammed on the other side of the burrito. If there was a way for the burrito to be wrapped so all the ingredients were more evenly distributed - this would easily be a 5/5 breakfast burrito. One random detail that stuck out to me was that their drinks in their refrigerator were very cold - no lukewarm sodas here! I would come back here to try their signature "Fancy" sandwich. Overall, this is a very solid breakfast spot in Boston!

Upon Entering there was already a line two people before me. 1 waiting for food and the other waiting to order. The workers were busy making subs. and it took about 5 min before the 1st guy got his food, the 2nd guy ended up leaving ordering nothing. After he got his food I waited another 11 minutes just standing there, every so often an employee would look at me and one finally said they would be right with me. over 10 minutes is too long. I thought maybe they have a lot of online orders? Another person came in after me and during my wait period to order he ended up leaving as well after 7 minutes. I used to actually own a sub shop in Plymouth a few decades ago that got very busy. If there is a long line of people coming in, take the order right away so they can just wait for the food. people dont tend to wait so long as I did and you lose money. This will keep them there. One issue I had was one of the workers a female was sweating profusely while making the food. dripping from her forehead down her nose and hitting the table. Her shirt had sweat all on it. I got a different employee that made my food thankfully , but I keep thinking about this and dont want to go back, this is a food safety issue. Its disgusting to be honest. This was my first time going there and I am a local.
