Made reservations for same day and nowhere on the resy reservation page did it say they did not take same day reservations, but when we came for our reservation we were told otherwise. The host assumed we did not have reservations and told us that they're jammed pack. I quickly told them that I had reservations and then they looked around saying that there must have been a glitch in their system when they just seated a couple ahead of us. A hidden korean restaurant in Kips bay with an interesting take on korean fusion. The exterior isn't immediately obvious, but once you step inside, you're instantly taken to a classy korean bar/restaurant, similar to take31, osamil, and her name is han in ktown -- except that I would argue the food options here are even more interesting. We got the chicken katsu kimchi fried rice, the tomahawk galbi, and the rice cakes. The chicken katsu was amazing - one of the stars of the meal, but I definetly wish there was more egg on the side - there was so little. The tomahawk galbi was a tender medium rare that I really appreciated, and came with four dipping sauces. The servers were great at explaining each dish and what they were known for -- the only thing is I felt that they were rushing us out for no reason. We had a reservation and ate pretty early, and there were plenty of empty tables. However, before we finished each plate, the servers would try to take them away from us. Even as my friend was finishing the last two bites, the server had his hands on the plate and took it from him as he was bringing it from the dish to his plate. As we studied the menu outside of the restaurant, a few patrons on their way in highly recommended that we should go in and we would love it. We did and yes, we do! This is one of my new fav spots! The vibes were immaculate in terms of lighting, ambience, music, and layout of the restaurant/bar. We made a reservation for 7pm on a Thursday and the restaurant was relatively packed at the time. We were seated at a booth which I really liked bc the unique shape of the furniture felt extra private and also allowed us to easily sit next to each other. In general, I'd highly recommend this place for date night! We ordered the popular kimchi fried rice with chicken katsu and also tried the shrimp/scallop/caviar rice bowl. I feel like oftentimes the gochujang overpowers that unique fried rice aroma (idk how to explain this aroma but iykyk) but this one was a PERFECT balance. Chicken katsu was also perfectly crispy yet juicy and the egg they pour onto the stone plate went very well with bites of fried rice. I feel like this dish was also really great value given the portions for the price. There aren't many places where I actively crave a dish I had at the restaurant later on but this is one of them. I loved how flavorful the rice in the shrimp/scallop/caviar rice bowl was and the seafood was also fresh. Very glad we tried it but def not as filling as the kimchi fried rice/katsu dish. Next time I'd love to try the tomahawk galbi as it's one of their most popular. Service was also great! But what pushed it from good to great was finding out they're also on the Seated app, so my meal ended up being quite affordable! OMG... A friend recommended Sam Sunny for dinner the other night as we were planning on going to the area and it was incredible. As a group of 4, we split 5 dishes. We ordered the spicy rice cakes with fried squid and the scallion pancake to start. The fried squid had a great texture, a light crisp on the outside and tender inside, which paired well with the spicy rice cakes. The scallion pancake was different from others I had, almost looking like a "Korean pizza". Also delicious and unique. We ordered the kimchi fried rice with chicken katsu, tomahawk steak, and braised beef to all share for the entree. The tomahawk was incredible and paired well with all 4 dipping sauces. The fried rice had a nice savory flavor with the egg and the chicken katsu had a sweet&spicy sauce on it. The spicy beef was tender and cane with white rice to soak up the sauce. I really enjoyed the Departure, which was a fruity cocktail infused with nitro. We ordered a bottle of soju to split which was good as well. One thing to note is that all of the food came out at once, even though we asked for them to stagger it a bit. I give Sam Sunny a 4.5 but I'm rounding up for its potential and the fact that I want to come back again to try the rest of the menu. Stars of the show this time: korean fried chicken (SO TENDER), spicy rice cakes & fried squid (the fried squid is fried to perfection and light and crispy), japchae (savory, beautifully grilled vegetables, and glass noodles are always a fun texture). I'll definitely be back, given its quiet location away from Ktown and its cozy vibes. The menu at Sam Sunny is extensive, and even though we visited with a group of 7, we were only able to try a small portion of their offerings. Aside from the stars mentioned above, we also tried the mushroom rice bowl, which is great for mushroom lovers. The Kimchi shrimp scallop pancake (pajeon) was kind of small, and it wasn't better than seafood pajeon you can get at your neighborhood Korean spot. The spicy squid and bean sprout was good, and as a squid lover, I appreciated that the squid was not overcooked, but the dish didn't stand out enough to me. I didn't love the strong bbq sauce flavor of the chicken katsu in the kimchi fried rice, though I did love how beautifully the egg cooked before our eyes on the cast iron plate. I was also pretty excited to try the Departure cocktail, which is nitro-infused and promised a smooth velvety texture. This is a place with great ambiance and service! And if course the most important, great food. We ordered: Egg Souffle - This dish was so good. It was so flavorful and you can tell they made the egg with some sort of broth instead of water, which some places do, so it wasn't too eggy. It was also really fluffy and soft. Other places where I've had this dish usually make it so airy that it deflates easily and gives the egg a very spongy texture but that wasn't the case here at all. Kimchi Fried Rice w/ Chicken Katsu - This was the dish I saw online that made me want to come here so of course we ordered it! They pour the egg out in front of you which makes it perfect for taking pictures, but tip: once that egg starts cooking, you need to start mixing. We waited too long taking pictures and it ended up being a very smooth plasticy egg sheet because it's a very shallow area it's cooking in. Other than that, the dish itself wasn't especially special outside of just being good. The katsu was yummy and crispy but the rice itself was pretty average. Seafood Rice Bowl - Outside of the way it was served (it kind of looked like it was served in a dog bowl), this was probably my favorite dish. Usually rice bowls are good until you eat all the toppings and then you just have a plain rice left to finish. But the rice in this dish was fully seasoned itself and enjoyable on its own. There was also a lot of seafood inside so its not like you need to eat the rice by itself anyways. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the scallop was literally so tender, I couldn't get enough. Since we were a big party we were able to try sooo many dishes - one of the perks of a big group! My FAVORITES were: the Shrimp, Scallop, and Caviar Bowl - some thought the rice for this was too salty but I don't know that they realized there is some ikura in there, as well as some uni and nori crisps! I made a perfect bite with a bit of everything. This is sublime. The Fish Market - noodles with mussels, shrimp, and octopus. The sauce is so good. It was like slightly spicy and so flavorful. I also have to call out the seafood pancake. This was not doughy like other places and had a crisp to it which I love. The Tomahawk Galbi is definitely worth a try and also can be the perfect bite. You ever take a bite out of something so good that you don't know what to do except start laughing? Thats what me and my girlfriends did. Starting with the mandu, it was the juiciest umami bomb that I've encountered. The kimchi pork soup is solid - a signature Korean staple. The chicken katsu was perfectly cooked- crispy, and not dry at all. I loved mixing the egg on the stone plate and the kimchi fried rice was a solid staple as well. The tomahawk galbi was incredible. I loved the presentation and how it was perfectly cooked. It did not need ANY sauce or toppings really, but the ones provided also added and complimented the short rib well. It's nice to have a Korean restaurant on a strip filled with bars and pubs. The prices for bottled wine also seem to be reasonable. However, I had a not so great dining experience. The 25oz tomahawk "galbi" that I ordered visibly contains less pieces of meats and more thinly sliced pieces as compared to pictures posted by others (see picture). Service that night was also a hit or miss, I had to follow up several times to get a water refill. FYI I like hard chewy rice, but for those that prefer softer mushier rice, may probably not like the rice bowls here. - 'Galbi' Skewers: the one dish I would not recommend. We got seated at a booth, which gave us a nice view of the full bar. Staff were super friendly and attentive and gave us recommendations. Started off with cocktails- Sam Sunny Sour and Purple Jim Oh. Both were delicious and light. For food, the egg soufflé- was simple, light and fluffy. The spicy rice cake and fried squid wasn't overly spicy and was a good starter. We also ordered the seafood rice bowl- the shrimp and scallop were fresh, but it was a bit too saucy because they added a lot of oyster sauce. The bulgogi beef was a solid choice- it was still sizzling, cooked perfectly and had flavor. Would definitely come back for the vibes and try out their other cocktails. read more

We came here on a blustery fall night, and Sam Sunny greated us with a cozy atmosphere and very attentive staff. Everyone that we interacted with were attentive and polite, and they always kept an eye on the tables. Drinks getting low? They will ask if you want more. If you haven't picked up your utensils in a while, they will stop by to see if you need anything. We wanted to keep eating, but it was just so much food! (I love banchan) If Shu Mai and Soup Dumplings had a baby, it would be the "Galbi" Mandu. Style is like a Shu Mai, but the flavor is that of a soup dumpling, with a strong beefy flavor. Tofu soup? Yes please! Poured over rice, the scallops and shrimp with tofu was a rich, slightly spicy dish, and definitely meets my definition of comfort food. My friend mixed up the mushrooms with rice (rice, upon rice, upon rice!) and it was amazing. Rich, flavorful and filling, the sticky mushroom rice dish was a great option to pair with the tofu soup. I haven't been in the Sam Su NY for a while. I have noticed that the food has changed and so were the appetizers too. Now, the restaurant doesn't give out three appetizers and only one dish of Kim chi. Which has no taste . The salad was the delight to begin of the meal. I ordered a spicy beef noodle soup. The soup was warm and it is ok. My friend ordered a Bulgogi beef. He said the dish tasted nothing but sugar. We're are very disappointed it and this was one of our favorite restaurants. read more

Came here with my friends and the service was great, but the food was way too saucey/salty. I got the Seafood Rice Bowl but it was just too much of the oyster sauce/soy sauce that I barely finished the food.. Maybe I'll try a different dish when I come back.
