My husband and I were seriously craving Hawaiian food on a Sunday morning and wanted something for lunch, but we didn't feel like going to Ono's or L&L for the usual picks. We decided to try something local and came across Big Island Hawaiian BBQ, which was a close enough drive from where we live so we figured, why not give this spot a try? Overall, we had a really great first experience. The quality of the food stood out right away as everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. We were honestly very impressed with how good everything tasted. Even though the portions aren't as packed as some other Hawaiian BBQ spots, the food absolutely hits all the Hawaiian flavors and cravings we love, and we left very satisfied. The pricing was decent (slightly cheaper than other Hawaiian food spots), the interior was clean and well-kept, and I appreciated the designated sauce station on top of having sauces at each table for convenience. To top it all off, the Pineapple Dole Whip was the perfect dessert as it was light, refreshing, and such a great finishing touch. Another big thing to note is that they offer Musubi Mondays, where you can get 50% off musubis. My husband immediately noticed the sign for it in the front of the store and was so excited. We thought how it was such a sweet deal that we are already considering coming back on a Monday just for that to stock up on musubis to eat at home. However, there is a max of 2 orders per customer for the Musubi Monday deal, but still totally worth it to try. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is purely because of portion size compared to other Hawaiian places. The spam musubis are also a bit small in size compared to other places that make spam musubi but the teriyaki sauce that goes with it makes it better! That said, the quality, taste, and overall experience definitely make up for it! This is officially going to be our new go-to spot for Hawaiian food moving forward, and we're excited to come back again soon! read more

Fresh made to order musubi and Hawaiian bbq dish plates. I ordered a teriyaki beef, rice and Mac salad plate and was given so much beef it had to be in its own container! Also, a teriyaki chicken plate and it was delicious. I took some leftovers to work the next day and everyone commented how good my food smells when I went to reheat it so I had to brag where I got it. It made me realize that I want to re order again for tomorrow as well. Great environment for a quick eat in folsom with friendly staff. I'll be back soon! read more

I was craving Hawaiian BBQ and decided to grab takeout from here. I like that they offer a "mini meal" option, but I was a little disappointed with the portions. I ordered the Pick 2 plate for my husband expecting it to be packed (like Ono Hawaiian BBQ usually does), but it wasn't nearly as full. The "make it mini" was $11.99, and they charge an extra $2 just to have all mac salad, which felt a bit pricey. The BBQ chicken itself was pretty plain and dry, I ended up having to drench it in the teriyaki sauce on the side for flavor. The mac salad was solid, and the cabbage was a nice palate cleanser, but overall the meal fell flat. I wish the chicken had more flavor and was juicier because that's what really makes Hawaiian BBQ hit. Unfortunately, it just wasn't there for me, so I wouldn't come back. read more

My honey had a client in El Dorado Hills and picked up some food on the way back. I wanted baby backs but she found this place. We go to Hawaii frequently and have eaten at various luaus and local restaurants so I believe I have a good palate for this cuisine. Hawaiian BBQ Chicken BBQ Beef Kalbi Short Ribs Meat tender and full of flavor the short ribs are amazing. Mac Salad In general this dish is normally a mayo bomb anywhere in Hawaii. Here it is perfect. Rice Good. Kalua Pork It is ok. If ever in the area would like to try Loco Moco and Katsu Moco. For anyone reading this review the short ribs are a must!!! read more

The food here was honestly some of the best tasting Hawaiian food I've had so far. Everything was full of flavor and cooked perfectly. The inside of the restaurant was really nice and had a great vibe. Prices were about what you'd expect for Hawaii, so no surprises there. The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is the portion size -- a little more food would make it perfect. Still a great spot and definitely worth checking out. read more

The kalbi ribs here are so yummy and their mac salad is incredibly delicious! I always judge Hawaiian BBQ by the macaroni salad and Big Island delivered. We also ordered a mixed plate with chicken katsu, BBQ chicken, and BBQ beef. I'd say my favorites out of the four meats are kalbi and chicken katsu. They upcharge on plates if you order the kalbi ribs, but they are worth it! The meat is seasoned very well and it was so tender. We immediately dug in. Service is prompt and friendly. Our plates took a little longer to come out which tells me the meats are cooked to order, so I do not mind the extra wait! Definitely a great spot. I will be returning soon. The place is in the same parking lot as Walmart, clean on the outside and inside, fast & great service, the macaroni salad was fire and last but not least the musubi......their musubi is super duper fire, it's wrapped up nice and pretty in the clear plastic wrap that always has the perfect amount of rice perfect slice of spam and the teriyaki sauce that brings it all together. The musubi there gets 10/10 for sure. read more

Recently got the chance to try this new Hawaiian BBQ spot in the Folsom Wal-Mart parking lot, which has been on my "to-try" list for over a year now. It was super easy to park right out front, and, when I stopped by, there happened to be a very short wait time. It was busy enough to know it was good, but not busy enough to cause a long delay. (I think there were 5-6 people seated, and one person in front of me in line.) I ordered the Hawaiian BBQ Big Island Faves with BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, Kalbi Short ribs, rice, and macaroni salad. I paid an extra dollar to have two scoops of macaroni salad and one scoop of rice. I think my total came out to $16.99 before tax. The flavor was on point. I loved the flavor of every single item. No complaints there. Could not have been better. For the price I paid, the portions seemed very small. This was my fourth or fifth time ever ordering Hawaiian BBQ, and the first time I was able to eat it all in one setting. There's usually enough for two or three meals. Even though I paid so much extra for ribs, I ended up getting a very small serving of them. There were only three small ribs, total. Still, the flavor was so good that it almost made up for the smaller portion sizes, and I don't know of any better spots nearby. read more

Since our first visit, we've been coming back for more. The portion has improved greatly, esp. the meat portion was bigger. Our favorite is the chicken katsu & kalua pork. The chicken katsu was perfectly cooked: crispy coating with tender meat. The kalua pork was tender and tasted delicious. The chicken teriyaki has sweet flavor and tender meat. Food was decent, but portion sizes were unusually smaller than expected compared to other Hawaiian BBQ places for the same price. I calmly asked manager if I could get a bit more since I paid extra for the "3 entree plate" but was shut down and told no. Not coming back here. I picked up an order to go a couple weeks ago. I ordered a regular size chicken katsu plate and a soda - it came out to $24 approx. Admittedly I was disappointed the portion was so small. It looked like a child's size portion that was being charged for the full size. The food was good and I enjoyed it. The service was nice but I didn't interact with them too much since I had already paid and was just there to pick up. The store was clean and there is a self service station for your sauces and soda. I will try to go back again before doing a more in depth review to see if I get a small portion for the price again or if it was a fluke. read more

So so good. I mean soooo good! My son is obsessed with the Spam Musubi. Every thing I have had is tasty and delicious. We even used this restaurant to cater a team party and all the parents and kids were happy! Definitely get the dole whip. Chicken Katsu is crunchy and delicious. On our last visit, they had a sign saying they were adding burgers. I'm sure they will be delicious too. Customer service 10/10 read more

First visit for take-out , did not have much time to look over the menu just picked up a mix plate lunch bbq chicken/beef it was served with a scoop of mac salad and 2 scoops of rice nice portions. Good food. Great service with a quick turn around time. And clean restaurant. Very fun decorations. I didn't take a photo of the lobby as there were other patrons there. I got a 2 plate so I could try a couple different meats. I got the Kalua Pork and BBQ Chicken. Never had Kalua Pork before, so I'm not sure what it's like, but this one was a touch salty for me. But it is pork, which is prone to being salty. As a salt-holic, I didn't mind. But if you're sensitive to salt, maybe keep that in thought. The BBQ chicken was delightful, but didn't bring the "WOW!" I was hoping for. It was more subtle flavor. Good but on the gentle side. I like the flavor to knock me back into my seat. but that's just me. The cabbage was fresh and crunchy. Over all, good eats. Our table had sticky sauce, the girl that's wiping tables was around I asked her to wipe ours nicely but she rolled her eyes, I asked why you gotta roll your eyes just to ask you to do your job. She asked me with an attitude if there's anything's else she can do for me and I told her no just don't roll your eyes and she said I'm not your fucking maid. We decided to stop here on the way back from Apple Hill and I'm glad we did! It wasn't too busy, the food was amazing and staff were very friendly. I have been wanting to try Big Island Hawaiian BBQ for a long time. I love how it is conveniently located in the heart of Folsom. I often visit Lembi park and the great food places around there have caught my eye, Big Island Hawaiian BBQ being one of them. I finally went in to be pleasantly surprised by the clean restaurant, delicious menu options and the aloha spirit the environment brings. I was disappointed that they were out of lumpia and spam musubi to try but I will be back and hopefully they will be stocked up! I tried the Island Fries with chicken katsu. My husband had the pick two plate with mac salad, rice and chicken katsu teriyaki beef. My friend got the pick two plate with chicken katsu with the ribs. There are so many Hawaiian Island drinks in a can to choose from. I can't wait to dine here again especially when I am in the Folsom area. My hubby, our daughter and I decided to stop in for lunch after seeing this newly family-owned restaurant that opened just last year! I ordered the Kalua Pork Mini Meal. The pork is cooked to perfection, steamed rice nice and fluffy, mac salad freakin bomb, yes I said freakin! And not to mention the portion is generous! And of course you cannot order Hawaiian food without ordering Spam Musubis! They're amazing FYI, I loved the sauce and a great portion size as well! To drink a tropical Ice Tea. This tea is both sweet and delicious with a nice lemon flavor as well! I would recommend this locally owned restaurant. Options: $11.99 for 1 choice of meat $12.99 for 2 choices of meat Positive energy as we entered and were greeted with an Aloha. I knew I wanted the Kalua Pork because I have been craving shredded pork since my Hawaii trip. The staff recommended the Chicken Katsu so I decided to make it my second meat choice. The plates came with macaroni salad and 2 scoops of rice. The Kalua Pork was super juicy and flavorful. The Katsu was very crunchy and was pretty good when dipped into the Katsu sauce. I do wish I received more pork and macaroni salad. Our group had a lot of leftover rice which was unfortunate. I would have preferred another side of macaroni salad. All in all, the staff was friendly, the food wash delicious, and the restaurant was very clean and spacious. I will definitely be returning here on my next trip to Folsom. read more

Love that this is the only fast food Hawaiian place in Folsom.. it's about time. I used to have to drive to Rancho just to get my fix. They give good portions and prices are fair. The interior is quite cute and clean. There is one shared Bathroom which is also kept clean. I love that they have Monday to Thursday specials too! A mid-tier lunch experience today. I saw some videos on Instagram so decided to swing by when I was in town. When I walked in I realized the interior of restaurant was more chain-like than I anticipated, but that's what I should have expected for Folsom. I'd rank this slightly more authentic than L&L but also slightly less tasty. The friendly woman at the register greeted us warmly. We ordered some appetizers and 2 combo plates, and of all the food the best items were the teriyaki chicken and spam Masubi, which I gave solo scores of 3.5/5. The other items were almost all 3's with the exception of the potstickers, lumpia, and fried shrimp, all of which I'd give 2/5. We dined on a Monday so they offered 2 spam Masubi for half price ($3 and some change) so that was actually a good deal and maybe my favorite overall. No beers were offered but they had a nice soda machine and good selection of Hawaiian Sun juices. read more

I ordered a two meat meal and a mini short rib. I live five minutes away from this place. I got home and into my surprise. The portions were extremely small and the food was cold so it wasn't recently cooked and the Katsu was overcooked. Gross! read more

It had an excellent bark and reminded me of some of the best brisket I've had in Texas: simple salt and pepper seasoning done right. I also got my wife a beef rib and a side of collard greens to go. The customer service was outstanding. Everyone was friendly, accommodating, and made the experience even better. I'll definitely be back.
