My husband and I were seriously craving Hawaiian food on a Sunday morning and wanted something for lunch, but we didn't feel like going to Ono's or L&L for the usual picks. We decided to try something local and came across Big Island Hawaiian BBQ, which was a close enough drive from where we live so we figured, why not give this spot a try? Overall, we had a really great first experience. The quality of the food stood out right away as everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. We were honestly very impressed with how good everything tasted. Even though the portions aren't as packed as some other Hawaiian BBQ spots, the food absolutely hits all the Hawaiian flavors and cravings we love, and we left very satisfied. The pricing was decent (slightly cheaper than other Hawaiian food spots), the interior was clean and well-kept, and I appreciated the designated sauce station on top of having sauces at each table for convenience. To top it all off, the Pineapple Dole Whip was the perfect dessert as it was light, refreshing, and such a great finishing touch. Another big thing to note is that they offer Musubi Mondays, where you can get 50% off musubis. My husband immediately noticed the sign for it in the front of the store and was so excited. We thought how it was such a sweet deal that we are already considering coming back on a Monday just for that to stock up on musubis to eat at home. However, there is a max of 2 orders per customer for the Musubi Monday deal, but still totally worth it to try. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is purely because of portion size compared to other Hawaiian places. The spam musubis are also a bit small in size compared to other places that make spam musubi but the teriyaki sauce that goes with it makes it better! That said, the quality, taste, and overall experience definitely make up for it! They upcharge on plates if you order the kalbi ribs, but they are worth it! The meat is seasoned very well and it was so tender. We immediately dug in. Service is prompt and friendly. The place is in the same parking lot as Walmart, clean on the outside and inside, fast & great service, the macaroni salad was fire and last but not least the musubi......their musubi is super duper fire, it's wrapped up nice and pretty in the clear plastic wrap that always has the perfect amount of rice perfect slice of spam and the teriyaki sauce that brings it all together. It was super easy to park right out front, and, when I stopped by, there happened to be a very short wait time. It was busy enough to know it was good, but not busy enough to cause a long delay. (I think there were 5-6 people seated, and one person in front of me in line.) I ordered the Hawaiian BBQ Big Island Faves with BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, Kalbi Short ribs, rice, and macaroni salad. I paid an extra dollar to have two scoops of macaroni salad and one scoop of rice. I think my total came out to $16.99 before tax. The flavor was on point. I loved the flavor of every single item. No complaints there. Could not have been better. For the price I paid, the portions seemed very small. This was my fourth or fifth time ever ordering Hawaiian BBQ, and the first time I was able to eat it all in one setting. There's usually enough for two or three meals. Even though I paid so much extra for ribs, I ended up getting a very small serving of them. There were only three small ribs, total. I picked up an order to go a couple weeks ago. I ordered a regular size chicken katsu plate and a soda - it came out to $24 approx. Admittedly I was disappointed the portion was so small. It looked like a child's size portion that was being charged for the full size. The food was good and I enjoyed it. The service was nice but I didn't interact with them too much since I had already paid and was just there to pick up. The store was clean and there is a self service station for your sauces and soda. I have been wanting to try Big Island Hawaiian BBQ for a long time. I love how it is conveniently located in the heart of Folsom. I often visit Lembi park and the great food places around there have caught my eye, Big Island Hawaiian BBQ being one of them. I finally went in to be pleasantly surprised by the clean restaurant, delicious menu options and the aloha spirit the environment brings. I was disappointed that they were out of lumpia and spam musubi to try but I will be back and hopefully they will be stocked up! I tried the Island Fries with chicken katsu. My husband had the pick two plate with mac salad, rice and chicken katsu teriyaki beef. My friend got the pick two plate with chicken katsu with the ribs. A mid-tier lunch experience today. I saw some videos on Instagram so decided to swing by when I was in town. When I walked in I realized the interior of restaurant was more chain-like than I anticipated, but that's what I should have expected for Folsom. I'd rank this slightly more authentic than L&L but also slightly less tasty. The friendly woman at the register greeted us warmly. We ordered some appetizers and 2 combo plates, and of all the food the best items were the teriyaki chicken and spam Masubi, which I gave solo scores of 3.5/5. The other items were almost all 3's with the exception of the potstickers, lumpia, and fried shrimp, all of which I'd give 2/5. We dined on a Monday so they offered 2 spam Masubi for half price ($3 and some change) so that was actually a good deal and maybe my favorite overall. No beers were offered but they had a nice soda machine and good selection of Hawaiian Sun juices. read more
