My friends and I enjoyed a memorable evening in this cool historic military spot that's full of character and local old world southern charm. The place looks like I'm walking into an old house with a foyer! We were hungry and got to order food immediately! Since it was the first time, we were not feeling too adventurous! The food arrived within 7 to 10 minutes, the Big Kahuna Tuna Sandwich was perfectly cooked and packed with flavor, the sweet potato fries with that sweet cinnamon dusting were absolutely addictive, the fish and chips were hot and crispy, and the garden quesadillas were fresh and satisfying. The wait staff were very friendly, attentive without hovering, and made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. I highly recommend this historic Lebanon gem to anyone looking for a relaxed, delicious meal in a place that still feels like "old school" hospitality done right. The ambiance is lovely, there is outdoor seating in a covered area, the inside is so appealing with tables artistically placed, plenty of light in the outer rooms of this military academy converted to restaurant. This is great for casual dining but I would even consider it for a celebration. The menu is extensive with many sections from expensive dinner options to burgers and wraps. This is the BEST salad bar I've seen in a long time. The servers were VERY attentive. We were a group in a private room so serving us was a bit of a challenge. On Monday's seniors get 25% discount, also on Mondays only starting at 4:00 Prime rib is served. I'll be back to enjoy dinner, and enjoy it as an upscale place for lunch. We did not have a very good experience at Sammy B's. We are there on northern day. The service wasn't very good and the food which may have been okay but it was cafeteria style and no one bothered to make sure the burners were on and the food was like luke warm to cold. Sammy's has a very friendly staff. The menu has an old school vibe, in a good way! If you live in Lebanon, you owe it to yourself to experience dining in this classic restaurant. I end up sitting in the bar area like 75% of the time I go there and I like it. Lots to see, closer to the salad bar, and comfy chairs! I always order a beef dish there...steak or prime rib and I'm always satisfied. My wife has had pork chop, fish, and last night tried a Sailor Wrap or something like that and enjoyed it. This was definitely a Father's Day Fail! It's really unfortunate, as I wanted to love this place. The restaurant revitalized an original military university club house, so the aesthetic is very nice. There is lots of space for different size parties, plus an outside patio. Sammy B's is definitely hidden and a little difficult to find. There is a parking lot behind the restaurant. We did not have a reservation and were able to get seated right away. That's important with 2 children. Sundays is an all-you-can-eat buffet for $25 an adult and $15 per child. We were ready to eat! Too bad no one told us ahead of time, there isn't much to eat. Defining this as a buffet is a STRETCH!!!! Sammy B's claim to fame is their salad bar, which is included in the buffet price. Thank goodness, otherwise we would have all gone hungry... no seriously! The buffet is not for kids and a complete waste of money. Everything was overcooked and I mean everything. Our kids would not even let me put the chicken fingers on their plates. Honestly, I cannot blame them. The kids' options looked nasty. The only breakfast item was French Toast Sticks that were so overly fried our daughter cried when she tried to eat one. She literally couldn't bite into it. The buffet had chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, eggs and ham. The ham was eatable, but the macaroni and cheese was nasty. Our son at least tried it. He turned to me after 1 bite saying "Momma, Don't try it". At this point, I'm wondering if it's just us.... The restaurant was not full, but there was steady traffic. There were toddlers to teens dining with their dads. The single common theme was none of these kids touched their buffet food. All (and I mean all) filled up on the fruit and yogurt from the salad bar, which meant we all had to re-feed our kids again when we arrived home. For $15 a child there better be bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles, must I go on! For adults there were a few more options: fish-in-chips, tasteless eggs, sausage & shrimp with grits, red potatoes no one bothered to even slice, and some weird bean dish. I'm generally excited to try a little bit of everything which I did! The sausage and shrimp was by far the only real eatable items on the buffet. Definitely skip the fried food. It was nasty. This is supposed to be a southern brunch. Sammy B's cannot be messing up chicken fingers and fried fish! I stood in the buffet area waiting and watching in line, until I realized Sammy B's has a really bad process for replacing the food on the buffet. The waiting staff runs the new food from the kitchen in bowls, then dumps it into the existing buffet platters. For those of us that are not aware, this means the old food gets mixed in with the new food. At some point, Sammy B's has no idea how long the food has been sitting on that buffet tray. I'm sure at some point, someone will have food poisoning. After all this, we were still trying to enjoy Father's day. That was until the last straw! Before we went to the buffet, we ordered coffee. The waitress brought half/half to the table, instead we asked for a little milk. When we received the bill, Sammy B's charged us $4 for a splash of milk in our coffee!!!!!! I can get an entire gallon of milk from Kroger for $3.29. We nicely questioned the charge, which the waitress was happy to ask her manager to adjust. The manager refused. No one ever told us there was a charge for milk with coffee. Furthermore, $4!!!! This is outrageous. We politely mentioned to the waitress to let her manager know this was the wrong decision and we would not be back. I would have normally had a conversation with the manager directly, but at this point I'm trying to salvage Father's Day brunch. My husband is sitting back in his chair, arms crossed, giving me the "Let's get out of here!" expression. For 2 adults and 2 children, we spent $104 dollars before tip. We did tip the waitress, as none of this was really her fault. She was the only positive of this whole experience. Sammy B's is a complete waste of money, especially if you have children. Adults looking to lose weight, this is the spot for you, as there is nothing worth eating. I'd rather personally starve. To the owners of Sammy B's, it's definitely time to fire your manager, replace your head chef, and revamp your entire menu. I'm a big fan of supporting locally owned businesses; however, you will be lucky not to be bankrupt within the year. I highly suggest using this review as a basis for improvement. I have gone here two times and the only saving grace is the salad bar. On my first visit, I tried the little appetizer steak sliders that were on these little biscuits, and that steak was so tough that I ended up with a blackeye and a bloody nose. You couldn't even chew through it. I don't know what kind of cut they're using or it was awful. Needless to say out of the three little sliders I had a very small chunk of meat that was actually edible and ended up with two pieces of Chewed up shoe leather on my plate. On my second visit, I had a tuna steak sandwich. And the tuna was completely overcooked. It was drier than the Sahara desert. It tasted like I was eating tuna out of a can. I'm not sure. I'll be back at this point , but either way not good at all. She is very picky about how shrimp is cooked ( not overdone ) and she thought it was good and cooked correctly. Our table order appetizers with the 3 dip option. We got the artichoke dip, Boursin dip, and the crabby dip. We thought all three were good. The only issue was that the appetizers came out after our lunch had been delivered. Brought someone to Sammy Bs bc I'd been there once and had a great experience. (The tab/2: $100.) This night we were sat in the managers station and our service could not have been worse. We were not greeted with a smile but a snarl and a swipe at me. Waters we requested were forgotten and brought out after we asked repeatedly. When asked about the specials we were asked don't you know the menu? I ordered crab cakes with asparagus and was actually given burnt spears that were inedible. When asked to return them, she snatched them from our table without an apology and brought back perfect ones after I'd finished the meal. Isn't she supposed to be quality control? Didn't offer a to go box or offer a dessert choice. The best part of the night was the excellent wine choices and table side banter delivered by the incomparable James the long suffering and dapper bartender. His eloquent story of a patrons' painting of him that hangs near the bar was a hoot and a holler as well as the Sr. Queen of Wilson County sitting at the next table in full regalia complete with a sky high crown and sash. Sammy B's is located in a building formerly part of the Castle Heights Military Academy. The historical feel of the building is definitely the coolest part of eating here. Everything in this building, from the staircase to the bar, seems like it has stories to tell. We were seated at a table in the enclosed porch with a view of the grounds. What a great local place. Seated right away but did wait 10 minutes before we got drinks. Another 35-40 min for our food. Full disclosure- our waitress was busy. Once the food came out, she was very attentive and apologized for the wait and offered us free dessert. Food was good and the staff were super friendly. There was an older gentleman working the bar. While we were eating, we were wondering who Sammy B was. I happened to look up behind the bar and there was a picture on the wall - Sammy B - who so happened to be the gentleman bartender! Our server was enthusiastic about the new menu, and I would agree. Can recommend appetizers of potato-corn fritters and squash sticks. Enjoyed entrees of chicken marsala, Heights Chicken "Sammich", Rattlesnake Chicken Pasta, Chicken Salad Wrap, Lobster Mac & Cheese, shrimp and chips, and Fisherman's Feast. Topped off with nicely chilled martini. There is a small selection of draught brewskies. History: The building previously was part of the Castle Heights Military School complex. A beautiful hidden gem in Lebanon. The location is not in plain sight but once you find it, you'll understand. The inside is beautifully decorated with an old charm. We were seated in less than 3 minutes outdoors by this very nice woman who moved things around to accommodate just the 2 of us. Our server was Jen (I think. You'll know her because she has beautiful eyes) who recommended a few things. We had some cocktails and crab dip to begin. Those cocktails were wonderfully made. The crab dip was my least favorite meal. It was a little runny and oniony. I personally like my crab dip thick and creamy. The star of the night was the steak salad. They make their dressings in house, so I will honestly say, that dressing was the best I've ever had. Also, the fried green tomato and bacon sandwich was delicious (ask for less sauce so the tomato flavor can come forward). Their sweet potato fries were crispy and perfect. They have a cherry mustard that is unique and we were dipping our fries in it. I can see that mustard on a turkey sandwich. Good people, good service, good food & great history! I grew up around this area and remember the actual Castle Heights Military Academy pretty well. I am so glad they've kept the buildings and found use for them. Sammie B's has been a locally known name for decades and anyone who was part of the music scene in Nashville in the 80s knows this place well. Fast forward a bit and the name continues. The atmosphere here is nostalgic. There's a small cozy bar when you first enter the dining area, seats around 7-8 people. There wasn't many customers when we went in the afternoon which was great for us. We had some drinks before the meal and the bartender, James, is serving some deliciously potent drinks. My kinda guy lol. Our food was cooked perfect and tasted wonderful. We had the 16th Ave sammich, Bacon-wrapped Filet, Prime Rib, & the 14oz KC steak. The meats were good cuts, perfect combo of tender meat/fat and cooked exactly as ordered. The sammich was impressive. It was grilled and had a good 2 inch thickness of ham/turkey/bacon and those skinny fries are absolute fire! Yah, it was all good and I'm glad we came here. The food was ok at best. The fried green tomatoes were fried in a batter which over powered the actual green tomato, therefore giving a fried fritter feel with a gooey middle and the batter wasn't all the way done on the inside adding to the goo. The best part about our meal was the wings. They were really good but my husband and I only enjoyed the wings. He ordered the steak and queso Mac n cheese and sweet potato fries. His steak was cooked to temped but that's it. No flavor at all. The sweet potato fries were good but all our food came out cold - like it had been siting in a breeze way for at minimum 10 minutes. The Mac and cheese center was cold and the cheese wasn't even melted in the center. I order the rattlesnake chicken pasta was just nasty. It was presented very well, but the flavors were not complimentary. If we could replace all we had with the wings and hot sweet potato fries I would. We had a $34 ribeye which was to rave about. The only thing I could talk about is how bad our experience is. The wings were good though- lol. The setting is nice, the chairs were very wobbly and made me feel like if I breathe to hard I'd hit the floor.
